Discovered this site a few days ago and I really like it!
Rushu42 replied to SpiritualYogiNerd's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Welcome! Brandon Sanderson does not shrink from addressing complex moral issues, so you're in the right place. (I don't think that any of the below will really spoil anything, but I'm going to hide it anyway.) I'm excited to see you on the forums!- 1 reply

I think that this is a great theory. It's reinforced by the fact that the Command required to excise a bit of someone's spiritweb in such a way must be incredibly complex. The quote with Denth implies that he himself doesn't know them, which would make sense if taken with this theory. In fact, I think it's quite possible that Vasher is either one of the best or the very best Awakener in the Cosmere, which could mean that he's the only one who knows the Commands. It also makes me wonder if that's similar to how Cultivation removed Dalinar's memories...but that's a bit of a stretch. Anyway, I love this idea!

Aln stared at him for a moment. "Do I understand that you just surrounded me and threatened to kill me so that I would keep doing exactly what I had been?"

Aln shuddered, her breathing coming fast and unevenly. Her trembling hand went to her eye, reflexively trying to push the bug away, but the manacles on her wrists prevented the motion. She felt a scream welling up in her throat as bugs swarmed around her, but no sound came out. John's words scattered around the room, the letters distorted. The expression on his face when he reformed nearly made Aln scream again, but instead she swallowed. "I..." She stammered. "I don't..." Her fingers sought her face once more. "What are you doing to my eye?"

Aln closed her left eye, but kept the right firmly fixed in the Sleepless. "You're saying that you own me? I'm not sure I quite follow," she said calmly. "You are spending your merits to save my building. If this gives you the legal right to own that building once your PlasmaCore government has been established, that is unfortunate but acceptable. However, you claim that spending merits on my library gives you the legal right to own me? Are you therefore claiming that without your influence, your colleagues would kill me?"

Well, I think it depends on whether or not the Plate/Blade is living. Now, we haven't really seen any living Plate yet, so I don't know how that changes things, but a living Blade is extremely versatile (for example, Lift's Shardfork). Plus, Plate (the dead kind) must be put on piece by piece over several minutes, while Blade can be summoned in a few seconds. Not to mention that a living Shardblade is required to operate Oathgates. So I'm going to have to cast my vote in favor of Shardblades; although there are many times when Plate is more useful, I feel like Blades can be used for a wider variety of things. Unless they're dead.

By something special, do you mean that Rock's dad could be a Lightweaver? That's why Tien was fascinated with rocks, after all. To that, I reply that it's unlikely, but possible. Horneater names are poems, as Rock explained, and it seems more likely that this was an unrelated naming trend. As we see on page 329 of Oathbringer, he himself named two of his children after rocks. (Quote below) “Next son is Rock, but not same kind of Rock as me. This is … um … smaller Rock." Still, it's an interesting thought.

At what point does it stop being the present and start being the past?

So, I recently had a friend ask me for other books similar to Brandon Sanderson's (I had recommended him to her earlier). Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of ideas, and I've actually been asking the same question myself. Does anyone here have any books or authors that you think a Sanderfan would like?

Aln resisted the urge to sneeze. "You're from Roshar, then? You must have witnessed an incredible amount of history."

Aln exhaled. A Sleepless. She had read about them, of course, but to see one in person was incredibly rare. Restraining her excitement, she said, "Forgive my impertinence, but how old are you? I know that Sleepless live for thousands of years."

"I am indeed very thankful," Aln replied. "Please forgive me if my gratitude is somewhat tempered by the fact that your colleagues were the ones trying to burn it down in the first place. So, what can you tell me about your previous experience in the Bureau of Villiany?"

Aln pointedly ignored his exasperation; she just muttered something about "assumptions" and moved on. "Mr. Redleaf," she asked, "If you don't mind me asking, how high ranked in this organization are you? You seemed to be able to rescue my library without too much difficulty." Assuming, she added to herself, that you really did save it.

She drummed her fingers on the table, her manacles clinking. "Your plan really is to just kill anyone in your way, huh?" She absentmindedly flicked her spanpen on and off. "So why the buildup with the PlasmaCore building? Why not just start with an army, if that was your eventual plan anyway?"

Aln gave a reluctant smile. "Unfortunately, I have not. I spent far too much time travelling throughout the Cosmere, apparently, and not nearly enough here." She made a quick mark in her book. "Now, there's a point I was rather unclear on. Do you intend on killing all residents of the Alleycity, or just the ones that oppose you?"

Minor Characters you want to see promoted
Rushu42 replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I want to see more from the perspective of ardents, personally. Their concept intrigues me, and (as you can likely tell) ardents like Rushu are some of my favorite characters. The breakthroughs that we see them make, what with spren measurements and translating the dawnchant, could be vitally important to our main characters. I'd also like to see how an ardent would handle becoming a Radiant. Would they stay as ardents, or would they leave the devotaries and become lighteyes? It would be fascinating. -
Aln raised an eyebrow at this, and asked, "Boundless Worlds? Could you perhaps elaborate on that?"

I'd have to agree. I mean, I love his other books, but Stormlight really blows them out of the water.

Hello and welcome! We're glad you're here. Everything I said above about the forms applies. What's your favorite series?
-
Welcome to the Shard! I do the same thing as you; I mix up Warbreaker and Oathbringer. I mean, it would really make sense the other way, right? To reiterate what Furamirionind said, there are some really fun forum games and RPs, if that's what you like. My personal favorite is the Alleyverse. Of course, theory discussion is also really interesting, though often riddled with spoilers. I hope you enjoy whatever you choose to participate in!
