Aln looked at him appraisingly for a moment, then took a slip of paper from her desk and handed it to him. "Sign this," she said. The paper read as follows: I, the undersigned, hereby pledge myself to the Guild of Scholars, and promise to strive to gather and spread knowledge throughout the Alleyverse and corresponding worlds. Signed, _______________

Aln nodded. "Our only mission is to find knowledge. We have no desire to get mixed up in any conflict." "Excellent," said Aln, turning to her. "Your senses should be sharpened now. Can you only hear things that are far away?"

Aln looked past Cyna at the man who had just entered, frowning as the door slammed into the wall. She spoke, slowly. "Yes, this is the Scholar's Guild. I believe that the Ghostbloods have headquarters nearby." She drew a map from her pocket and handed it to the man. "If I may ask, what's your name, and why do you seek the Ghostbloods?"

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Rushu42 replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, but your wish (the second one) cannot be granted. I wish to become extremely good at Quizbowl*. *Quizbowl is a trivia competition focusing on the mastery of knowledge. The format consists of long, paragraph-like questions called tossups and shorter sets of three questions called bonuses. You play in teams of four against other teams, usually from schools, mostly highschool. -

Granted. Your bane is that you now cannot find whatever device you wished to charge. I wish that I will get 100% on my math final. -
"I'm not asking you to do anything harmful. The issue merely intrigues me. When burning Pewter, for example, one's strength increases. However, so does one's agility, allowing them to control that strength. Could not Tin conceivably do the same?" She glanced toward a box on the shelf. "Would you please burn Tin for a moment? I have a small supply of my own that you may use."

Aln frowned. "But is that by nature of the Investiture, or rather induced by psychological instinct?" She paused. "I'll put it this way. Could the Investiture potentially permit you to hear all sounds at once, despite the overwhelming effects? My theory is that it is rather like trying to bite off your own finger; your jaw is perfectly strong enough to do so, but your instincts of self-preservation interfere. Otherwise there must be some feature of the Investiture that we have perhaps been misinterpreting." She lapsed into silence for a moment, still writing, then looked at Cyna. "Would you perhaps be willing to experiment?"

Aln scribbled something down. "Interesting," She mumbled. "It enhances your senses in a very specific way. Is that sort of effect universal to your other senses? For example, when tapping hearing, can you only hear things farther away? Or smell?"

"A compounder. Fascinating. I've never met a Tin compounder before. Tell me, if you compound sight, how far away can you see, usually?" Aln took out a leather notebook and a pen embedded with a gemstone, prepared to write.

I love M-Bot too! The world needs fewer warships and more mushroom observers. Which series is your favorite? (I like Stormlight best).
-
"I? I am from Roshar, where highstorms sweep the Earth and greatshells roam the plains. I am a Knight Radiant of the Truthwatcher order, and I have been blessed by the Nightwatcher." Aln breathed in deeply, inhaling Stormlight from the spheres in her pocket, and formed an image of the Shattered Plains in midair. Stormlight puffed from her mouth as she spoke. "And what Investiture can you access, coming from Scadrial? I assume you can do some, as others rarely find the Alleyverse."

A Stormlight Woodworking Project
Images added to a gallery album owned by Rushu42 in Stormlight Archive Art
I turned an assignment for school into a Sanderson reference, because why wouldn't you? Disclaimer: I have no woodworking experience outside of school. -
From the album: A Stormlight Woodworking Project
We had to make a bean-bag toss for Tech Ed class, so I figured I'd burn a Sanderson reference into mine. The Truthwatchers are my favorite order, as well as the one I'd probably fit into, although I could be a Skybreaker as well. -
I must've missed that, thanks. Are all Skybreaker spren that shy, do you know?

I don't know whether I missed some bit of lore or whatnot, but this question has been bothering me; why doesn't Szeth's have a spren? Prior to his death he was bound to the Honorblade, so a spren wasn't required, but what about after that? He's a Skybreaker now, after all. Is this because he was brought back from the dead? Do no Skybreakers have spren? Is it something to do with Nightblood? I would love for someone to clear this up for me, if anyone knows.

Did you cry: Responding to the saddest moments in the cosmere
Rushu42 replied to ShardShaper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I rarely cry visibly when reading, but I have my own list of heartwrenching Cosmere moments. -Every time Tien comes up. Every storming time. -When Jezrien died. I know he wasn't really a character, but he was described as the greatest man who ever lived, and his loss crushed me. -Hrathen deserves a mention. He was a great character. -Shallan's brokenness. I really liked the Shallan we first saw, and every time she sinks deeper it hurts. -Szeth's whole plotline. The fact that he was right all along, that he didn't even deserve his punishment, just made it even more poignant. -Not Cosmere -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Rushu42 replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted- you're expelled from your school, and are unable to complete your education or have a successful career. I wish to have my arachnaphobia erased. -
Aln frowned. "But how did you switch the spanreeds from atop a mountain? In, for that matter, what you described as an unsafe situation? If you're willing, I'd be happy to hear your whole story. Although," she added, glancing at Cyna, "If you prefer to converse more privately, we can talk in the back room."

Hmm. I don't know about that. I see Venli as more of the revolutionary who got in over her head than the tragic spurned lover. Her plot in WoR was about convincing her people to bond Voidspren and fight back against the Alethi. That doesn't really sound like either Éponine or Fantine. I mean, Venli was happily married (before her plan got her husband killed). And you can't say that the fate of Enjolras and friends wasn't tragic. They died for their beliefs, just like the Parshendi who were taken over by the Fused.

"Ah, that's a very good question. There are about a dozen known worlds that interact with the Alleyverse, each of them unique. They all collide here. There are a collection of planets that are very closely intertwined, in the manner of Investiture. These all follow specific rules of magic, and are affected by Shards. We call those 'the Cosmere'. The issue is, however, that there are worlds that don't follow these rules at all, whose magic systems completely contradict others in the Alleyverse. That makes it very difficult to establish an all-encompassing theory of Investiture. I do have several ideas.." Aln began to pull a notebook out of her pocket, then stopped and looked at Cyna. "Of course, that's not really what you asked." She thought for a moment. "I suppose what I'm getting at is that this is a very chaotic place, difficult to understand, and overwhelming at times. But it's also the gateway to a larger universe than any could previously imagine. Does that help?"

"Ah. You're from Scadrial, then. Well, this is the Alleyverse. I'm still unclear on the exact mechanics, but think of it as a pocket universe. A world between worlds." Aln pulled a folded map from her pocket. "I believe there's a gateway back to Luthadel somewhere near here."
