  1. Aln coughed, fighting the urge to resist his grasp, and spit out the ruby. "There," she said. "I'm unarmed, I promise. And.." she hesitated. "I surrender. What happens now?"
  2. "What happens if I surrender?" Aln asked nervously. She could see the others fighting out of the corners of her eyes. Can I count on them winning? She asked herself. Maybe. Of course, I have no way to gauge the abilities of either side. My best hope is to stay out of the fighting. Disguising the motion as a cough, she slipped an infused ruby from her sleeve into her mouth.
  3. Aln raised her hands, stepping back. "Please let me leave. I have no part in this conflict. I'm just a scholar." Her conscience twisted at her for abandoning the others (or trying to), but she didn't know what else to do. She would be useless in a fight, and besides, she had sworn not to take sides. Still, as she watched the others prepare to fight, something within her wished that she could join them.
  4. "I'm not sure," Aln replied. "They're pretty far away, but we could get closer. I ask, because I suspect a connection between them and the Dark Phoenix."
  5. The preparations for war continued around her, but Aln's mind kept drifting back to what she had learned about the Phoenix. It's definitely Hemalurgic, then. And it has been affected by strong Rioting before. But if it wasn't Max, who was it? She pulled her mind back to the conversation at hand, but she knew that her knowledge would be of little use. She had no experience fighting a war. Instead, she looked at Kendul. "Kendul, what do you have in your copperminds that could pertain to this situation? Is there anything on monstrosities like the ones we see?" @Lord Furret
  6. Aln smiled. "I'm glad someone got the message. I'm not sure I can explain much more than you already know, but I'll do my best. When I arrived at the PlasmaCore building, it was under attack from a massive bird made of flames. It's been referred to as a phoenix, but I have been unable to determine the origins of the creature. I don't even know whether it's biological or mechanical, although I believe that it's powered by Hemalurgy. Regardless, it was intent on destroying the building, and was only stopped by a forcefield. There was a battle, between it and a shape-shifter, but it suddenly stopped in the midst of it all, and flew away. I thought that it had been controlled in some way, as it was acting quite oddly, but that appears to be false." She stopped and glanced at Max before continuing, "A second Phoenix, some dark parody of the first, eventually destroyed the building, and has been since waiting near the wreckage. However, this has not seemed to deter PlasmaCore, which has now sent an a large army of monstrosities to destroy and conquer the city. Several Guilds, I believe, are sending armies of their own. The... confrontation will be ugly." Aln sighed, looking concerned. "I don't believe that there's any way to prevent a battle, at this point, but perhaps my notes will be of some use."
  7. Aln seemed not to hear Kendul, but she saw his sand out of the corner of her eye, and turned around. She seemed startled. "Kendul? When did you get here?"
  8. Aln put a hand reflexively in her pocket, fingers seeking her spanreed. "I suppose," she replied. "I wonder-" She was cut off by the sudden transformation of a nearby bug. Aln jumped, staring toward the girl. Could that be... A Sleepless? She thought. I wouldn't even be surprised, at this point. Rather than give voice to her thoughts, though, she asked, "Something important? What do you mean? And, who are you?"
  9. Aln frowned at the Dark Phoenix. There was something that didn't quite fit. Why would the Dark Phoenix follow the example of the first? Why had the first left at all? I still don't know where either of them came from, Aln reminded herself. She turned back toward Althea and Max, intending to ask again about it, but realized that she had missed part of the conversation. "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" She asked, inwardly berating herself for looking away.
  10. I was rereading the start of The Way of Kings, and a sentence caught my eye. It was during the chapter from Cenn's perspective, when Kaladin and Dallet are discussing a lighted officer who had just come onto the battlefield. "Kaladin turned toward Dallet. 'That's one of Hallaw's officers. He might be the one.'" (Page 34.) Does anyone know what he meant by that? I think I'm missing something. I initially thought that he just meant that killing the brightlord would get his squad to the Shattered Plains, but that doesn't make sense with what comes next. "'You don't know that, sir.' 'Regardless, he's a battalionlord. If we kill an officer that high, we’re all but guaranteed to be in the next group sent to the Shattered Plains. We’re taking him.'" So what does he mean by "the one", then? What have I forgotten?
  11. Aln sighed. It seemed that their solution was just a bloodbath. She didn't have any better ideas, though, so she let it pass. "What about the Dark Phoenix?" sha asked, gesturing at it. "What do we know about that?"
  12. Aln nodded. "I see. And what was your plan to stop it?" Then, to Eiran, "It's nice to meet you."
  13. "That would be very helpful, thank you. We can contact each other after PlasmaCore is dealt with." If it ever is, she added to herself. Aln looked back at Max. "You mentioned an army? Would you happen to know what exactly this army is trying to accomplish?"
  14. "You're telling me that it wasn't you?" She frowned, considering. "Then there are two options. Either someone else is controlling it, or it decided to leave on its own." She grimaced. "I'm not sure which option is better. I'm adamantly neutral, but I still don't want my home burned down." She wrote something in her notebook, then asked, "So what were you doing here, if not confronting the Phoenix?"
  15. Aln frowned. "Then how did you do it? I assumed that your Allomancy was enhanced."
  16. "I assume that the Phoenix was a hemalurgic construct, since your Allomancy could take hold of it. Do you know anything else about the origins of said construct?"
  17. Aln shook his hand, and her own head. "This place is more tumultuous than mid-revolution scadrial, sometimes. It's nice to meet you." She opened her notebook and pulled out her pen. "Would you mind if I asked you a few questions? I'm compiling a theory of Universal Investiture, as well as a history of the events here."
  18. "Of course," Aln replied. She stepped over to Max and placed her hand on his arm. Stormlight began to stream out of her into him. In a few moments, his injuries were gone, as was most of Aln's stormlight. She took a deep breath, removing her hand. "If I may ask, how was he hurt?"
  19. "I am Alanis Sheneth, leader of the Scholar's Guild. It's a pleasure to meet you." She glanced to the side, registering the presence of Tels, but made no comment. "I suppose, before you answer my questions, I should offer my services. Do any here need healing?"
  20. Aln ascended to the roof of the building where she had spotted the figures. She approached them, and asked "Did one of you just take control of the Phoenix?" @Sorana @I think I am here. @Truthless of ShinovarShinovarShinovarShShinovarShi @Silva
  21. Aln watched the Phoenix narrowly as it flew away. It left, she thought. Why? Perhaps something to do with the Alleystorm... She herself could still feel the power coursing within her, begging to be used. Could the Phoenix have been similarly affected? Perhaps, she answered herself, but that shouldn't have caused it to abandon its prey. Unless, however, the bird is a Hemalurgic construct, rather than a native species. She felt a small surge of excitement. Yes... The increased power of the storm could have allowed an emotional Allomancer to seize control. She turned from the sky and began scanning the buildings around her. The connection weakens with distance, so... There. She spotted a small group of figures on a roof some little ways away. After descending from the structure where Kumiko had dropped her, she began to walk towards them.
  22. Aln gasped as the Alleystorm hit. The spheres in her coat blazed to life, and power swelled within her. The urge to use her enhanced Investiture was almost overpowering, but instead she held her breath, trying to contain it. I don't know how long this will last, she reminded herself, and there will be those that need healing.
  23. Aln stumbled as she landed, then turned to look back at the battle above her. Storms, she thought. She saved me. If that costs her this battle... Aln began to write again.
  24. Despite the advice, Aln has not moved. She was once more scribbling furiously when the shockwave launched her backward. She slammed into the ground, and immediately began glowing with Stormlight. The notebook went flying from her fingers, and tumbled into the flames. She stumbled to her feet and pulled another, smaller packet of pages from an inner pocket. The motion dislodged several spheres, now dun, which scattered across the roof. Flipping her spanreed on, she sent a message to her guild. Then, gritting her teeth, she turned back toward the battle.
