  1. Maybe. How is that useful? Are we to assume that the Fused will not learn the secret or leave a perpendicularity unguarded? Just? That's thousands of kilometers. With a small child in tow.
  2. Exactly. But now look at it from the perspective of the common people of Alethkar or Herdaz. Sure, Retribution can have you crucified for shoplifting. Yes he can have you conscripted to fight some offworlders. Your local lord, however, can also have you executed for minor crimes. He could conscript you for fighting some other noble lord. At least Retribution cannot have you jailed on trumped up charges just to leave you to rot in prison waiting for a trial indefinitely postponed. Retribution does not tell you that the god all your ancestors believed in is dead. Retribution does not just give your enemy what he wants. Retribution does not fight for a year for a result he could have had then. Retribution did not lose the war. Retribution brings peace. Who is better?
  3. It was addressed. That very sequence addressed it. Fen put her own people first. She admitted it openly. Jasnah admitted it only in hindsight. By those standards what Adolin did was right. You protect your family. He just took the route through an eyeball into a brain. Neither of them was working to impress anybody but Fen. They are both practical people. They'll use the simplest way that'll work. Their approach showed their intelligence.
  4. The old Roshar is dead. The lighteyed lords have fallen. Your dahn is a meaningless vestige of a system that lost. That means its way of speaking has fallen to the sands of time as well. A world war is bound to change a lot of things, among them the way people speak. We are shown that. Compare prose from 1910 to prose from 1925.
  5. Outright tyranny? How? Retribution carries Honor around as a component. Certainly he will rule. And he will not brook expressions of dissent. But outright tyranny? Can he do such things as arbitrary arrests or just take away posessions? I doubt it. Too much honor.
  6. I guess that is so major a construct that it should be a major Shard World. We can start a process of elimination. Shards whose residency we are unsure about at the time of Wind and Truth: Virtuosity -> presumably already on Komashi Reason -> the Shard that hides itself Invention -> "The Grand Apparatus" Mercy ? Whimsy ? Valor ? By a gut feeling I'd say that he was talking about Valor's world.
  7. Before we are getting ahead of ourselves, how about we answer the most fundamental question: What are the goals of the Knights Radiant after the Stormfall? there will be no more Desolations Retribution rules according to a treaty. Do they really want to break it? the population of Roshar will not exactly love them after their leader losing them the war And, much worse Other Shards will see Roshar as Retribution's home system. They will fight Roshar as a whole.
  8. That in turn has consequences for the trapped residents of Urithiru once they break the shell. If they aid rebels or forment an uprising in the territories Retribution is holding by the contract, Retribution is free to act against them.
  9. In my personal experience a subset of the people with the most sophisticated intellectual resources do tend to neglect the basics.
  10. The part about making it specifically better needs to come from her personally or we'd have troube fitting Ruin to that Dawnshard. I need to point out that the difference between making something better and making something new basically depends on the scale you look at things. If you invent and add a new part to a machine then you have made something new and improved a machine. If you invent a machine used for a process, you have invented a machine and improved a process. Rinse and repeat.
  11. If you make something that didn't exist, you've changed the world, haven't you? The issue here is that ambition is also an emotion. An emotion not necessarily aimed at change. If you are already at the top your ambition is to stay there. You could make similar arguments about Endowment. The only Shard I could really not push into Change is Preservation and, though with a bit less conviction, Honor.
  12. Perhaps we should first collect points of agreement. Does anybody disagree with Ruin, Cultivation, Invention -> Change Preservation -> Exist
  13. Currently interstellar commerce is done with caravans. That limits your speed and cargo capacity to what a lifeless beast of burden can provide. Yet ordinary technology and magotech works in the Cognitive realm. I see no reason why you couldn't take the parts of a Malwish airship through a perpendicularity, build a base on the other side and assemble them there. Their range and speed suffice to take them at least to the next subastrals from Scadrial. It would still take days to weeks, but it would be orders of magnitude faster and comfortable than caravans. It seems to me that the Cosmere is on the verge of a major jump in interconnectivity no matter what happens. In fact the rockets the Scadrians already were working on could provide the next jump. A suborbital hop could bring a few people from Scadrial to another world in mere hours. The knowledge is also out there. If you set off a strategic nuke (or its equivalent) on somebody's door step they will wonder where it came from and what else is out there. However, in contrast to Earth's intercontinental trade, there is no equivalent of ships for cheap trade in bulk goods. The economics will look different. If you want a suit of awakened material on Scadrial, you can have it, if you are very rich. But no shipment of grain or ores in the quantities even the 19th century saw on Earth. A bit like the Earth in 1930 if the only means of travel were the Hindenburg.
  14. That charging likely requires Intent. That is, if you think that Retribution is an abominable tyrant, it won't work.
  15. Would you really want an Ars Arcanum on Surgebinding if only a few pages earlier you are told that the Knights no longer can use Surges due to a lack of Stormlight?
  16. The oldest promise. Shards are to leave each other alone.
  17. Exist: Preservation Virtuosity Whimsy Autonomy Change: Ruin Cultivation Ambition Invention 3rd Dawnshard - something like "Feel" Devotion Mercy Odium Valor 4th Dawnshard - something like "Believe" Honor Endowment Reason Dominion Not perfect, but this looks plausible to me. I must disagree. Virtuosity is about an inane ability, while Invention is about change by adding new stuff.
  18. I am very reluctant to ask this runining your fun, but why would he unleash his Blackthorn on Roshar? He already rules almost all of the planet and is by oath required to spare the areas he does not rule. At most he could use him in Shadesmar, but again, the Fused already rule there. It looked obvious to me that the new Blackthorn is intended to be a worldhopping warlord.
  19. This may be a bit odd, but what about the actors in the visions? They were sapient entities. Entering a vision creates them only for them to inevitably dissolve at the end of a vision. You are dissolving a sapient entity. Hence let me ask the ethical question: Is causing a vision mass murder?
  20. Or in his oppinion Kelsier could not have held onto Preservation anyway, so his decision affected only the timing.
  21. For what gain? What is left for her on Roshar?
  22. The human lands is not the humans. It is quite possible that he wants, at least for now, the Singers to rule by controlling Investiture they get by the Song of Prayer, if it is still working, and maybe cull the weaker parts of the human population.
  23. Is that true though? Did they look away? I find it suspicious that the weapon that killed the vessel of Odium was made on Nalthis and found its way into the hands of Cultivation just as the Everstorm developed. Now you certainly say that they acted selfishly by letting Honor and Cultivation pay the cost of containment. But that is not the same thing as doing nothing.
  24. A valid concern to an extent. But this far it is not clear to which extent Shards can learn. Honor even now has different aspects reflected in the different orders. It is possible that there are hard limits on the extent to which a Shard can change. That it can grow to an extent, however, was always clear. It is the reason Odium created the Dor.
  25. A chance? You think that Sja-Anat and other Voidspren will bet their lives on a chance?
