How to defend against shard plate, shard blades, wind runners, ect.
Observer replied to RJWB0mb's topic in Stormlight Archive
So, it's back to gigantic crossbows in a smoky room, preferably unlit to make the windrunner stand out like a naked man at a funeral. Then we pound them. -
Can a soother/rioter push/pull there own emotions?
Observer replied to SirShemmington VI's topic in Mistborn
Like I said, even if you can't soothe pain, taking away exhastion and anything else will achieve a similar effect. the opposite is probably true..... So... Rioters can make you drowsy. That's bound to have some inteesting applications. -
I would like to announce the possible existance of a time-warp machine located somewhere in China. This machine warps and distorts time, making the break days hurtle by at an absurd speed as a way to retaliate for their own lack of breaks. Somehow the entire break has passed in under three days. I recommend a strike team to go take it out.

Not a bad attention-grabber, all things considered.

Another interesting fact is that the Alethi burn their dead to send them to the afterlife, so burning seems associated with the soul and its return to the spiritual realm.

Rayse and Odium are the same person. I find it amazingly unlikely that Honor gave his representatives and soldiers weapons of Odium. Shardblades would have had to have been corrupted or changed after the fact for that to work at all.

One of the better ideas I've heard yet. Add a fabrial to the walls and ceiling to get them stuck to it, and the find a way to blind them. Heck, even filling the room with steam would work well -

Point for the first two, thought overwelming happiness has a way of making pain feel secondary. -

I don't care how much of a fall you can survive, massive steel blocks landing on you is bound to do some heavy damage. If you were to cut the ceiling into layers an dkeep them seperate, and then have them fall a few seconds apart, you'd foil the soulcaster. If the windrunner knows what's coming they might be able to shoot out the door, so you'd need to seal them in long enough for it to work, though the ideal condition is for them not to see it coming at all. Crazy idea: Shardblade cannons. Put the blade in a crossbow or a cannon of some kind and fire it at the sucker. If he manages to dodge, will it out of existance and pull it back down. -

Torture isn't the only application. It saves you the trouble of punching somebody's lights out if you can just have them doubled over from a distance. And again I ask: Does pain even qualify as an emotion? -
I've always wondered why aluminum would protect from emotional allomancy. Does it set up some kind of cognitive blockage, like metal to the shards? Along the original lines, does it obscure the person's cognitive with its own, convincing your allomancy that their brain is a hat? (In Wayne's case, this may not be far from the truth) Or maybe aluminum follows its feruchemical use and messes with your identity? And now, the stupid question: Vin was spiked, therefore, if you hit her with an absurdly powerful duralumin-zinc-brass wave, could you perform a koloss-style mindcontrol? Answer: If a shard couldn't do it, probably not a big enough loophole to mean anything.

A chain of compoundingly explosive power hitting a tineye would probably burst the poor sucker's eardrums I imagine nicrosil would be able to stack and therefore have a more intense effect. It makes sense. The real question is whether or not extending the line means anything And as for the gnat thing, maybe you don't recognise the metal reserves for what they are. Maybe you think everyone can make themselves feel warmish at will. It's not like you'd actively eat aluminum beforehand, so the only way you'd know is by seeing the mists swirly in your brief moment of warmth /completelyworthlessandofftopicrant /me imagines conga-lining nicrobursts *

Interesting thoughts. As a matter of fact, it just occured to me that: AoL spoilers

I'm simply saying that if Mistborn and Rioters had the power to crush people with pain, their fights would involve a lot more telepathic agony and a lot less jumping. Nobles spent a thousand years figuring out the best ways to keep themselves alive and their enemies dead, and I'm pretty sure the allomancers perfected their art as well. Even if you chalk that up to TLR supressing technology, we still get the large time gap before AoL filled with people experimenting with allomancy presided over by an intellectual god. It just seems horribly unlikely that in so much time this ability has never been heard of. And as a side note, I think pain is "created" by a totally different process than emotions, making the two different. But what do I know? -

My personal anti-windrunner and shardbearer duo defense plan simply involves and falling ceiling. You have to touch it to lash it, and by then you're already flat as a pancake. In the event of a soulcaster I'd probably have to layer it to avoid the whole thing from turning to smoke. -
From what we've seen of the desolations and Radiant times, the monsters were all non-living. All SHardblades needed to do was cut innanimate material, and they'd eat up thunderclasts and midnight escence for breakfast. If I had to hazard a guess, Odium added on the killing bit and things worked out wonderfully

Just thought it might be interesting. To change the history of an entire realm is such an audacious and deadly move, it'd make the Reod look like spilled milk.

I'm saying that if soothers can dampen pain, rioters can enhance it, which would most liekly have been discovered in the 1,300+ years passed. We hear no mention of TLR torturing with it, and no mention of it at all in any of the 4 books, so I'm assuming it's impossible to do directly -
Two things: One: The Dor is pressurized, which is why it fights to free itself via the Aons. Going into the shadesmar would probably end with you getting ejected back out in an energetic backlash for your trouble. Two: Sel magic is base din geography, and in Shadesmar all geography is flipped, seriously screwing up the place. This in and of itself is enough to make worldhopping a pain.

Thanks to the instinctive nature of Scadrial's magic systems, I sorta pushed the piece of my identy that was.....Wayne-y into an aluminummind(Oh wow) and suddenly found myself less funny and less inclined towards hats. I then compounded that and gave myself and explosive burst fo Wayne-ness, then prompty stole and used his metalminds because the explosion of personality overshadowed all else. Sorry Wayne, but I hate being sick...

Sorry, I meant tapping nicrosil :/ The power needed to get through TLR copperclouds would have to be on an emotion-flattening level, to the point the Ruin's subtleness would fail completely. With copperclouds you need to hit them with a certain amount of force to get through, so once the cloud is up the only thing you can hit them with is a massive crushing wave of allomancy. It sounds so totally unlike the way ruin works, not even taking into account how weak he was back before WoA. Long story short, no. I don't think a coppercloud would stop Ruin in the slightest.

I'm pretty sure Brandon said that it did in fact burn itself away, but either way the nicrosil would target it (we assume the duralumin doesn't target itself for explosive power) and make it go boom. The only way to definitively tell you're a gnat is if you look for swirly mists
-
Yeah, I doub the was seventeenth the whole time, likely it was between HoA and AoL, so it's not unlikely that somebody else picked him up. It does seems rather like Brandon to let Pewterarms burn Pewter and Atium-Pewter to avoid crap, and then award the lucky Seers the powers of Atium-everything, but we can't say for sure. Hey, at least Aluminum mistings aren't useless anymore...

If you can soothe pain.... Rioters would be torture machines So no, I don't think you can directly soothe pain. You can remove weariness and other things that increase the pain to simulate it, but you can't actually get rid of the pain itself.
