Drawing tiny Gaz-es always cheers me up. I thought i’d do a quick summary of his scenes in the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I really can’t explain why/how a character whose impact on the plot is so minor had such a strong effect on me. I guess that’s just the way i am.

I couldn’t find a good spren to represent a feeling of gained/lost hope, which i feel is a pretty important theme in this au so i made one up myself. Because Gaz is a piece of garbage, but a piece of garbage in a very difficult situation where he’s made to work a job that requires him to have no empathy for his soldiers, and where he’s constantly inches from demotion (which would result in death) That and he’s full of debts of a nebulous nature, and haunted by half of his world being in darkness. I don’t think you can live like this without taking the part of you that can still feel hope and crushing it under your boot. So finding yourself hoping again… is probably unpleasant.

I think the part of the comic i enjoyed drawing the most was Gaz swatting the awespren away. I don't think we see people interacting with spren phisically very often. Kaladin gets slapped in the face by Syl at one point but that's it. Gaz is really cute. I’m sorry, but if i don’t think+say it nobody else will. I love him enough for the whole cosmere fandom! ♥

Couple of comments: - I’m still kinda flip-flopping about the way i draw Gaz. In Words of Radiance, Shallan describes him as having a paunch, so i went and made him chubby. Rereading the Way of Kings it turned out he’s actually scrawny. But… I think the chub is really cute… What should i do? - We’re not given a description for Kaladin’s old spearmen squad i think. So i just went with whatever. - I’m really fond of the “yelling at someone for something you hate about yourself” trope. I’m going back to work tomorrow. But lately drawing all this SA fanart has been giving me something to look forward to at the end of the day, and furthermore an incentive to actually start separating my work and personal life (which is hard if you’re freelancing from home) which i’ve always struggled with. I sleep a lil less, but it’s worth it!

Any day where i can draw my favorite characters with a tiny bit of tongue out is a good day.

copypasted from my tumblr, as all these descriptions are... " So anyways lately i’ve been doing nothing but thinking about my Stormlight fanfic idea. It’s about Kaladin and Gaz becoming friends, based on altering 1 extremely minor, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in The Way Of Kings. (I have a crippling fear of rejection about these things, so sharing them is kind of hard.) when Kaladin tries to win over the bridge 4 crew with food n friendship, Gaz walks by to check in on them. Kaladin offers him a bowl of stew and he sorta sneers and walks off. So i’ve been thinking a lot about what would happen if he were to actually accept that offer. Not like, sit and hang with the bridge crew because that would just make everyone involved unhappy, but in the sense of a small act of spontaneous kindness that eventually leads to the two of them being able to actually talk and work things from there. I’ll probably write more about it because i’m a sucker for stories of unlikely friendships like that. "

Finished a sketch i made saturday. I feel like i’m being punished for my bad taste in characters, cos Gaz is explicitly banned from partecipating in the plot important thing halfway through Oathbringer. Kicked out of the plot. I’M NOT COMPLAINING, BUT STILL. Karma or something. So here’s a pic of him hanging out alone in Urithiru while Red and Vathah get to do cool stuff.

Red, Gaz and Vathah getting lunch. I read a post somewhere on here that joked about “kholinar fried chicken” and it’s just been HAUNTING me because the whole concept is so funny.

Red REALLY wants to learn how to stab things. I’m glad that Shallan’s guys get to be yknow, actual characters, even if it was kind of a running joke that she keeps forgetting about them.
