This is page 1 of another "chapter" in the redemption AU! As you can see, it's a flashback chapter. I finally got to draw a chull and some actual plant life, some rockbuds and a twisted spine. and yknow, 6 years old Gaz being v. cute.

End of part 4 of the AU comic! Which i should really give an actual title to at this point. BIG THANKS TO WIRESEGAL on the 17th shard discord for EDITING in this chapter, and especially making the dialogue really pop. i didn’t wanna post these 2 pages separated because the dialogue moves from one page to the other. No idea what kind of gambling it is where you pool all your money at the start of a game since that seems pretty much like the opposite of gambling, but look. I really wanted to draw them putting a buncha glowing spheres in a bowl.

The more i think about it the more i think this is kind of a "canon story except Gaz and Kaladin are friends instead of enemies" rather than a true redemption...

Planning your desertion over a game of cards while your best friend’s getting literally skinned alive in a highstorm a few metres from you: the comic. I think this might be the bleakest page so far… But then again, this whole “chapter” started with an execution, so it was bound to be dark.

There we go. My boys are here. Also, i snuck Luka (Gaz's Cryptic) in at least 3 pages now i think. Cryptics just lend themselves to this sort of thing. >:3

I like the image that the front of a highstorm is just crawling with windspren. So that’s where these are going.

That’s what The Way Of Kings needed: a fancomic where a full page is just Gaz having a panic attack. The concept of how spren react to extreme emotion is really interesting to me. There’s at least one case where someone’s so furious that the blood-like angerspren bubbles straight through to the lower floor. I figure the sheer amount of fearspren attracted by a panic attack might be enough to cover the walls like this. Also i started giving Gaz more hair lately. Mostly because it’s in a more traditional balding pattern. I still have... trouble... drawing it, but it’s easier to reason around different angles.

Shallan and the (main named) deserters, inspired by the song "Would You Rather" by Crusher-P, which i would link here but won't because it auto-embeds and i do not know how to avoid that. We know that Red served highprince Vamah (whose color is orange, apparently) and of course Gaz served Sadeas, but i have no idea about Vathah. *shrugs*

Page 20. I kinda wanted to make the blood dripping down the hammer red, color splash style, but the page already has fearspren in it done color-splash style (and if i left them gray they’d look weird) also, “everything’s greyscale except for blood” is an overdone aesthetic. Speaking of fearspren - they’re very small, floating goop. But i wanted to make them bigger to emphasize them. Think of drops of mercury, mixing up and forming into bigger blobs. Since this and the next page are pretty much Gaz having a massive panic attack, i feel like very big fearspren works. Ah... I don't know if that's interesting to you, but i associate these pages with the song "Rain in Soho" by The Mountain Goats. Give it a listen, it's divy.
