a doodle of Gaz, Red and Vathah because i love my good deserter boys

there was a time when i was like whaaat i can't post my weird shippy stuff on 17s, they'd disown me, it's too weird but then i went and did it anyway and now it's too late and you'll never get rid of me anyways, this is from at some point in the Redemption AU, and that's why they're both in uniform.

Last Bridge Standing, page 37! It’s been a couple of weeks after Kaladin's botched (kinda) execution... Kaladin and Gaz are dealing with the same exact problem, independently of each other. Well... One of them has a spren who can talk and at least one friend who knows a little about Radiant orders. The other has a spren that can’t communicate, and a tendency to jump to conclusions. As an aside, i was able to draw Gaz’s little tooth gap three times this page. That’s really nice.

Veil and her “parents”. Listen. Ok. Shallan clearly n obviously models Veil on Tyn. And the white hat is an integral part of her aesthetic. This makes these two technically her split personality’s parents. also another case of “every male character i draw turns into Gaz” i GUESS

" I just set out to draw an Uncomfortably Hot Gaz (because i aint pullin NO stops to make people love this boy) then this morning i woke up feeling bad so i drew this very upset Gaz and it actually led me to think about body headcanons… I’m thinking the first picture would probably be sometime back in the warcamps, maybe shortly before deserting because at that point he had very little to do and a lot of frustration to work out. besides, although Sadeas’ soldiers tend to be rowdy and lax with the rules, i’d guess they probably still keep their body in good shape on account of not wanting to die on the battlefield. (yes i know Gaz doesn’t go on the battlefield, STILL) Also regular meals, exercise, etc… All stuff very conductive to building up strong muscles. The second picture would be sometime after going from almost starving to death in the frostlands to having money and nothing to do all day but get drunk and gamble. He’d probably lose most of that muscle mass in a fairly short time, then gain the weight right back as fat. So i guess the second picture is Gaz having a “man i let myself go” moment after, i guess, having some shirt buttons pop from his gut. "

I drew these pages on stream, in another country (35 and 36) my first pages in a new country entirely... aa... (to clarify it's cos i moved to gran canaria)

I've been thinking about it lately, about how your bonded spren is supposed to be kinda guiding you through the process of becoming a radiant... Meaning a spren that can't talk would lend itself to serious misunderstandings.

Page 1 of the new section of the Gaz redemption AU comic / Last Bridge Standing! This chapter introduces Luka, Gaz’s cryptic. In this time period, Gaz and Kaladin are both figuring things out re: being a Radiant, except Kaladin’s experience is considerably difference… For starters, his spren can actually talk. The common depiction of Syl seems to be a more “fairy”/tinkerbell-esque figure, so i went a slightly different route. Luka’s speech bubbles/text effect are really hard to do, but i think the result’s worth it.

Thus concludes chapter 5 of the AU comic/Last Bridge Standing. Miscellaneous thoughts: - Everything about Gaz's backstory is, of course, a headcanon. To be honest, i don't think we'll ever get anything like that about him, because he's such a minor character, which is fine because it leaves me more room to experiment. - The most important part of this chapter for me was showing him genuinely happy and smiling as a cute child and then having that smile be taken away forever. - Luka started bonding with Gaz after he lost his eye. You can kinda see her there in page 29, chilling on his leg. I like hiding her in random places. - The black and white pages are sheer laziness, but i think they worked out well. - The red overlay on Kaladin is a symbolic depiction of the fact he's been gored by the storm and that i didn't want to draw that. - I love Gaz very much. It's kind of an obvious fact, but i haven't gone on about it for a while and i want to. He's a very important character to me for some bizarre reason. I love the concept of "cowardly, greedy, petty bully who's secretly desperate to feel useful". I wouldn't say it's relatable but damnation if it isn't oddly endearing.

penultimate page of the redemption au comic part 5! again the bubbles in this page aren't gloryspren, which haven't appeared yet in the comic (and are unlikely to for a long time) but "hopespren", which is why they're like bubbles and also purple. And also continuing with my stylistic choice to only depict Kaladin being basically skinned alive by the storm in a symbolic way with this red hue rather than getting graphic with it, which i feel wouldn't serve the narration very well.

Bye Red, bye Vathah… We won’t be seeing you again for A LONG TIME haah. I did put Red’s line in the first panel to sort of lessen the problem i noticed in the last few pages, which was having them sort of take advantage of Gaz’s gambling problem. The blood stain effect on Kaladin’s body is meant to be kinda symbolic- he’s basically been skinned alive by the highstorm, but i feel actually depicting it would’ve been so gross it’d shift the focus of the scene. The spren bubbling up in the last panel are “Hopespren”. We already saw them in the last page of part 1.

aka *presses fast forward on a lifetime of increasingly crippling problem gambling and debt to escape flashback land* side commentary: - sometime in the last couple of months i started stylizing his hair so much they stopped looking like greasy curls which is what they’re SUPPOSED to be and ended up looking like cute baby hair. We need… To go back. Put some more grease on this boy. - I had the hardest time figuring a good way to depict Gaz’s gambling problem. I read up on it a lot but it still doesn’t really help translate in a comic. I did my best tho. - On this subject: I feel kind of weird because so far i’ve depicted Red and Vathah as sort of beneficiaries of Gaz’s gambling problems - as this whole flashback is about, he’s REALLY unlucky and so they’re shown sort of making money over a crippling problem they’re aware of. And like, that feels really unfair to them… Kinda untrue too. In OB there’s a scene i thought was rly nice where Vathah puts his foot down and has them stop playing for real stakes despite Gaz’s insistence when he runs out of money. So that’s the type of guy he is. I will try to rectify in the next page.

Redemption AU/Last Bridge Standing page 29! This is one of the pages i really wanted to draw a lot… I’m happy i god to do this. Gaz really comes off to me as someone who’s been so thoroughly chewed up by life he stopped even thinking to fight back. His job is a dead-end, he’s probably going to end up a bridgeman anyways, he’s haunted by having lost his eye… Like at this point, he doesn’t think he could ever have anything good, and he takes this frustration out on the only people he has any power over.

gaz redemption au comic/last bridge standing page 28! RIP Gaz’s eye, which we only saw in one page where he was 6 because i wanted to do The Stylization. i really did want to draw it, but that second panel was making me very unhappy.

A Stormlight Archive AU where dungeons and dragons is a thing and that's what Veil is doing when she hangs out with her dudes. The hidden backstory of this picture is that Gaz rolled a character who's pretty much exactly Kaladin, and everyone except for him is uncomfortably aware of it.
