    The Wyrn's gaze hardened. "We cannot fight these creatures if we are fighting among ourselves." He gestured upwards. "This creature took out half of the team sent to eliminate it. And it is one of the weaker ones."

    "How can you be a Dark Lord if you can't remember anything?" asked Gerald.

    "Send it back?" said Wyrn. "No... the prison has been destroyed, you see. The prisoners scattered across the worlds. If we are to survive this creature and others - and believe me, there will be others - we will have to deal with them ourselves."

    Gerald doesn't. He knows about the idea of a Dark Lord, but not what that means in this instance. "What!!" exclaimed Gerald. "Do you know what he's talking about?"

    Gerald was shocked. "What do you mean?" he asked. "How can you be the Dark Lord?"

    "It is an escaped prisoner," said Wyrn. "From a prison of nightmares. And it is not the only one."

    "Yes, I have. He was working on things there when all communication was cut off..." Ashley looked concerned. "Do you know what happened to him?" The fox lifted up its head and roared silver flame. "It destroyed things," said the Wyrn. "And people. One hundred and thirty seven, to be exact- including four of the Myrkaal sent to take it down."

    "An image of an entity that appeared a day or so ago near a small village in the mountains." Above, the image moved slowly and gracefully, as though it were alive. It turned its head, passing alien eyes over the people at the table. "How recently?"

    The Wyrn sighed. "Watch," he said, gesturing upwards. "And see." Gradually, the room began to darken. And then - all of a sudden - a silver fox appeared in the air above the table. "Her father - Jeffery?"

    Ashley narrowed her eyes. "Where did you hear that name?" she asked harshly.

    "Perhaps," said the Wyrn. "So far, you have resisted any and all attempts at collaboration between us. But this supersedes personal preference."

    Gerald floated away from the magician. "If you're not the antagonist," he said with irritation, "why is everything setting you up to be?"
