  1. Anything, anywhere, anytime because my manliness is boundless.

Seriously though, most likely anything that weights less than me and isn't an insect or lizard type thingie, because FEAR. Obviously I wouldn't go against something poisonous and rather stay on land than go swimming.

  2. Read my first book(last half of it) in 2011. Rewatched Harry Potter movies as last part was coming out in a week or two, then watched them again, couldn't wait anymore and started reading. But HP isn't one that introduced me to fantasy. It introduced me to books, but mostly YA stuff like Percy Jackson and Mortal Instruments. I got bored with them soon and friend recommended me Name of the Wind. Then Mistborn happened, followed by Night Angel and that's how I got into fantasy novels. But I've been into fantasy/sci-fi(mostly sci-fi) stuff since I was 7-8, just too lazy to read...

  3. First Law does have some magic in it but mostly it's in background and no point of view characters have it. Trilogy had more of it because Bayaz but he used it once or twice per book. Don't remember any of it in standalones though. Basically there are two magicians in whole series who make appearance and do some magic and one that is simply mentioned but they aren't focus of the story. Also one fantasy species that could be described as magical creatures but they too are few and don't make much appearance. It has magic, but it could do without it and nothing would change really. Only reason for it's existence in those books is

to have two immortal dudes playing strategy game with real countries and lives, while main story focuses on pawns not even aware of their masters.

  4. Very good points, and I'm sure you're about to get a squeal out of Aether for the list.

I however, have a few points in to contradicting points in your list

1: Coins don't have pointy ends, thus less piercing power.

This is actually an advantage for the coin. You aren't going to pierce shardplate. Period. The only time we see that happening is when Szeth lashes himself down multiple times in succession and lands shardblade point down. This is partially why the arrows won't inflict damage, the smaller surface area is redirecting the force back into the arrow, instead of penetrating. If the Rosharan's would create a flat point arrow, it would be much more effective. The coins are able to push more of the energy from the shot into the shardplate because it will contact with more surface area.

2:Arrows are better designed for traveling through the air

Arrows are designed that way because of the need for flight stability. Allomantically propelled coins will have a much more stable flight path because of the nature of the continual push, unless the allomancer is moving. The way allomancy affects the coin eliminates this as an advantage the arrow has.

Had to throw in some advantages for arrows :D Knew second one was useless, first one is why I'm bad at physics :D

  5. They mention a Lighteyed archer killing a Shardbearer, but that was only after a horde of Spearmen had given him a decent bashing. I was under the impression that he killed him through an already destroyed and open section of the Plate. And if pelting a Shardbearer with arrows was so effective, then why does the Parshendi never use their Archer companies against them? Instead of sicking a never-ending line of War-pair on them, wouldn't it be more effective to send only some to keep them occupied while you pelter them with arrows? I think we are over-estimating the effectiveness of arrows here, and we shouldn't thus use it as a basis to determine the effect of Coin volleys.

    Arrows aren't effective because:

    1. they need to be shot from a long distance so that Shardbearer doesn't gets to them before arrows even descend.

    2. Volley of arrows shot from a distance are easily distinguished therefore easily avoided by Shardbearers speed.

    3. They shouldn't glace off the armor, otherwise they will be as useless as they were against Bridge Four's bone armor.

    4. Considering that Roshar is a windy place hitting a single target from a distance would be about pure luck, shooting volleys in a charging mass of Bridgerunners is easier though.

I will also add that we don't really know what kind of bows Parshendi are using and if Warform is supporting it. Maybe they have Archerform or something and they're actually really bad archers as they are so charging Shardbearers looks like a better option.

What about Shardbows? Do you think they could harm Shardplates?

No matter how you look at it arrows have more puncture power than any melee weapon. If a straight hit from a well aimed arrow can't harm Shardplate then I don't know what could. And we know that they get dented and even broken with close range weapons even if takes some time. So what I'm trying to say is that if it were possible to hit with arrows as easily as it is with melee weapons than arrows would do the job much faster.

Comparing coins to arrows is wrong, I agree as they're too different but that's closest thing we got to coins in Cosmere. So lets talk about coin vs arrow:

+Coins are smaller, therefore harder to spot.

+Coins don't need to be reloaded.

+Coins can be shot while moving at high speed.

+Coins are infinite as you can pull them to you afterwards.

-Coins don't have pointy ends thus less piercing power.

-Arrows also have better design for traveling through air.

(Kelsier also could stay 'just out of reach' and close enough to make avoiding coins impossible and being pushed from Dalinar would work in his hand)

Now it's obvious that arrows would deal much more damage to Shardplates than coins but coins are faster and defter(I could miss something here as I'm sleepy right now but point still stands: arrows = stronger/coins = faster), BUT there's one more point:

Coins keep getting pushed as they travel, while arrows only get momentum when they're shot and as they descend from the sky. It's a fact that Steelpush is stronger than gravity. I'm not that good at physics so I'm not sure about this whole thing but I believe coins do travel with same speed as arrows if not faster, and even though they don't have sharp points they would still be a serious problem for Shardplate.

Also, if I'm remembering correctly Wax pushed on bullets thus proving thus proving that it had enough power to affect force of bullet, which is obviously much stronger than any arrow or hammer could ever get.

I'm not saying that Kel would be able to pierce it with a single coin, or that he would be able to hit every time, or that it would be easy but he most likely would win. And there's no way he would lose. It's either tie or Kel's win. Why? Because there's no way Dalinar could stop him or bring him close to him if Kelsier didn't wish it and Kelsier was a smart guy.

  6. Nah, I don't know, if Shardplate gets dented by normal weapons and it does because Dalinar's plate was in a pretty bad shape when he fought on Tower and not only, then it can be dented and broken by coins. I'm not talking here single coin doing all the job but I'm pretty sure if someone could land several arrows in the exact same place perfectly than it would get dented and then broken after some more. Coins would have same effect, with less damage most likely but higher attack speed and accuracy as there is no need to reload it and it can be shot straight + Kelsier can keep moving while shooting and he would have 'infinite' amount of coins as he can pull them. Don't forget surprise attacks from behind with iron. Dalinar also would need to keep his eyes protected.

    Ketek
Fast enough to avoid how? Because he would need to run to Kelsier if he wanted to harm him. Even if he did some magic moves while charging Kelsier he wouldn't be able to avoid much as he's a big target AND he's not faster than arrows as far as I know. Did I mention that Kelsier wouldn't have to shoot coins one by one? He can keep shooting coins all over the place all the time.

  7. He doesn't need to push against Dalinar. Just give momentum to coins, one wouldn't do much, but in extended battle he would be able to get in tons of them while Dalinar would be running after him sweating. Kelsier has kept doing it for hours as far as we know and he has more endurance while burning Pewter than Dalinar in his Shards.

  8. Kelsier can stay in the air higher than Dalinar can jump and there will be nothing Dalinar could do to take him down. Kelsier wouldn't need to get too close to him and Duralumin-Pewter to break Shardplate, just close enough to shotgun him with coins and I don't think Shardplate would stand a chance against it if he used Duralumin. And yes, Kel wasn't too good with pewter + tin, but I think he could easily take out a simple Shardbearer just like Kaladin did it several times. Blackthorn isn't simple Shardbearer but throw in there iron and steel and there's no way Dalinar could stand against him, even without coins as long as there is enough metal around to stay in motion.

  9. Mistborn might be best place to start with Cosmere. Stormlight Archieve is Sanderson's best work so far and so on but Mistborn provides basic information about Cosmere that you won't find anywhere else simply because SA hasn't reached the point where those stuff will come into play and other books are mostly standalones at least. They have a lot of important information as well and there are references all over the place but third book in Mistborn series is what makes it apparent that there's more to the world than it seems imo. + It's finished and its awesome.

I would recommend reading them in chronological order: Elantris, Warbreaker, Mistborn, SA + you can read Emperor's Soul after reading Elantris and Alloy of Law after reading Mistborn Trilogy.
BUT I don't think Elantris is best place to start with Sanderson as it's his first work and writing is not as good as in others(Don't get me wrong, its good, but it's not as good as his later works imo).
Warbreaker is a good read and most likely will make you read other books by BS but Elantris and Warbreaker never get 'aware' of Cosmere.

I would recommend reading them in this order:
    Mistborn trilogy
    Warbreaker or Elantris or both
    Stormlight Archive

You can skip Elantris and read it after Stormlight Archieve, but don't skip Warbreaker.

But again, BS wrote them so that people can start reading from any series they want and you could read them all and still miss that they're all interconnected so you can start wherever you want :)

  10. It looks like third trilogy gonna be too far away from current Cosmere timeline :( I like premise of second trilogy a lot, kinda serious version of Alloy.

WOW! REALLY!? THERE'S GOING TO BE A 3RD MISTBORN SERIES!? My life is complete. It sound even more awesome.

3 not counting Alloy trilogy :)

  11. Erm, how does Vin being eaten by Kandra mean her returning? Never meant that. anyways it wouldn't be 'her', but WalDo would have her appearance AND as far as we know it could be imitating Vin. That's more than enough for me as a Mistborn fan and an awesome cameo/easteregg without having to start reviving dead characters :)

  12. Quick note: The Spiritual Realm is NOT the afterlife.  The true afterlife exists beyond the Three Realms.

That's why I said Afterlife-Spiritual, but maybe people get new bodies in afterlife :D Conflicts in spiritual realm are obviously between shards.

Cosmere plot imo: Hoid is trying to recreate Adonalsium > 17th shard is against that > Hoid dies > Sazed gets all the shards.

Basically my theory is that to recreate pure Adonalsium you should bind all the shards together without any holders. Problem is that it will most likely destroy or harm already existing world. 17th shard wants to keep world safe and put all the parts together as well, because they don't need any uncontrolled shards with bad intents running around shattering other shards, bringing chaos and trying to destroy worlds. If you put all the shards together it becomes neutral just like Harmony, so that's the best way to get it under control. Hoid feels like its his fault that Adonalsium shattered because of him and he destroyed world more important than current one so he'll do anything to recreate Adonalsium. But there might be some other big bad, opposite of Adonalsium is as good a guess as any so Hoid, 17thshard and all the good guys unite to fight that dude. It's gonna be happy ending any way, world is saved but everyone dies kinda happy ending. Can't see Hoid alive after Cosmere plot is resolved...

  13. Lots of love for various Gundams in this thread.

My only exposure was Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, which I enjoyed a lot, at first. But somewhere in the middle, everyone started changing allegiances every few episodes. It got tedious real fast, and I couldn't make myself keep watching.

As previously mentioned, I have a weakness for giant robots and explosions. So, maybe there's a better Gundam out there? What would you recommend?

Haven't seen Gundam Wing but as far as I know changing allegiances is very popular in Mecha genre :D Gundam 00 had some of it too but not much if I remember correctly. Code Geass had a lot of it. I don't remember any in Break Blade. Gurren Lagann did it once(?) but it's kinda different. I haven't seen original series of Evangelion, only first two movies that retell the story with awesome animations but there wasn't any of that as well. But TTGL is the one that takes giant robots and explosions on another level :D

  14. The Final Empire because it's a standalone book and anyone can read and enjoy it without any prequels and sequels. SA books are bigger and BS has improved a lot and a lot of cool stuff happens there but for me nothing(what I care about) in these two books has topped TFE.

  15. I'm not a big fan but stuff I liked was Gundam 00, Gurren Laggan, Monster, Samuri 7, The Last Exile(prob my fav), Avatar TLA & Korra(both of these shows are great), Darker then Black. That's about the extent of my knowledge. I did watch Attack on Titan and in weekly waits this is a hard show to follow I rec to marathon that one.

I liked Gundam 00 too. Had month of Mecha in last year other good ones I remember:

Neon Genesis Evangelion - haven't seen original but movies are very good.

Break(broken?) Blade - not as good as Evangelion but still.

Macross Frontier - stopped watching it halfway, but it had some good stuff in it too. Just not my thing.

Code Geass - mecha version of Death Note but I like it more simply because I hate second season of DN and it has more action/romance/comedy + better ending.

    Spoilers about TTGL/Mistborn

Kelsier = Kamina (inspires revolution and dies in first 1/3 of story)

Vin = Simon (becomes badass after his spiritual brother's death)

The Crew = Gurren Dan (Die a lot)

TLR = Lord Genome (Saving world by oppressing it)

    Elend = Nia (kinda)

    Allomancy = Manliness

Please tell me that I'm not only one :D :D

  16. We watched 3 episodes of Mushi-shi and found it incredibly boring and nonsensical. Definitely not for us.

We were able to watch the first episode of Gintama, and we won't be continuing. Far too random; it's trying too hard to be funny. For my humor shows I like something like Sgt. Frog. In the randomness direction I did like the couple episodes of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo that I saw a few years ago, but there's only so much of that type of thing I can take at a time.

It would be good to have a fun shounen to fill the void left by Bleach. Hunter X Hunter continues to be a smarter show than Bleach was, but Bleach had some better character interactions. Unfortunately Bleach also had some entirely forgettable stuff, though most of that was the filler arcs that we ultimately skipped.

I'll keep some of the other recommendations in mind.

If you're looking for some long anime series then it's either Naruto(if you aren't watching this already) or One Piece. I personally wouldn't recommend Naruto but it still fits what you're looking for. Haven't seen DBZ and Toriko so don't know much about those.

For shorter series Soul Eater and Shaman King. Love these even though they got some serious flaws. Around 50 episodes each if I'm remembering correctly. Soul Eater has as much nudity as Naruto. I don't remember any of that in SK.

If you're okay with Mecha genre then Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It's 26(27?) episodes and is most 'shounen' anime I've seen.

  17. Don't like this :( Vin looks too young, whole evil thing is okay on first book but it shouldn't be on second, that sword doesn't looks like Koloss sword at all and third one fails on so many levels... That Koloss doesn't looks good, he looks like Spy from Team Fortress 2, I don't understand how is this supposed to sell better than ones with original covers :(

Edit: I read Mistborn when I was 16 but I most likely would have skipped it back then if these covers were there.... You need to be 'cool' when doing stuff for teens and this is nowhere near cool.

  18. Am I only one here who thinks Brent Weeks might be doing his own hidden epic or something like that? It might be just my wishful thinking but Night Angel and Lightbringer have a lot in common, especially in magic.

There are seven known Ka'kari and even though some colors don't match ones used in Lightbringer it could still be explained somehow, not to mention that we still don't know 'everything' about it in neither series. Black is devouring one in both series too. For all we know Ka'kari could be made from luxin. Important thing there is that Black Ka'kari is called Black instead of Night Ka'kari, Dark Ka'kari, etc. He uses colors when he could easily use anything else describing those Ka'kari.

Then there's this 'collective magic thing'. Khalidorans pray to Khali when they inflict pain to create this huge magic reservoir and then they channel magic from there for fighting. Color Wight's creating their gods is same in a way, they have to do it collectively and it makes them stronger. Khali was Ka'kari user and a 'goddess'.

Colors in both series affect persons personality and if I'm remembering this correctly magicians in Night Angel are defined by their eye colors, while Drafters change their eyes according to their colors.

There's also a reference to Champion of Light in Night Angel trilogy that never happens there and is close to Lightbringer.

Of course it doesn't proves anything but I love stuff like this :| :|

  19. It would've been serious disappointment if she really died that way because that would've been worst death ever, at least from books I like. I didn't feel anything when she 'died' and one doesn't kill my favorite characters like that. My issue isn't with 'big reveal', but with the way Sanderson did it because her being alive at the end wasn't any kind of revelation for me at all. It was too obvious.
