  1. The Almighty is Honor; the Stormfather is the one who bonds with Dalinar. The Almighty/Honor fought and was killed by Odium. The Stormfather is a large spren who has merged with the remnants of Honor (i.e. his Cognitive Shadow). This merger is what allows the Stormfather to sort of carry out Honor's final wishes, which are to find/bond a Bondsmith to fight Odium. If you want to know more, check out the Coppermind (basically our version of Wikipedia) and join us down the rabbit hole.
  2. I always figured that you'd still get a resonance just like normal, but apparently that's not the case. I would guess that the "warping" of your spiritweb caused by the spike interferes with the resonance.
  3. Different people have different reasons for liking Brandon's works (or any author) - there are not "true" reasons and "false" reasons for liking a particular story. Liking (or disliking) a story for its plot is not any more or less valid than liking it for its intricate magic system. There are plenty of people on this forum who, like you, don't care about the specifics of the various Cosmere magics and how they work together. However, there are tons of people who do and who have pried into almost every aspect of them (just look at any signing on Arcanum). The mechanics behind the Cosmere are so grounded in reality (with a few modifications, or course) and consistent that people on this forum (who are much smarter than me) are able to extrapolate from observations make in some books to correctly predict things in future books, just like real-life science does. Despite his heroic efforts to mesh his worlds with reality, there are going to be some situations where that's not possible. He always puts story first or, as his Zeroeth Law puts it "pick the more awesome choice."
  4. Khrissalla is an Innocent bystander. @Ookla the Phoenix - it's the Blue Team's turn.
  5. Gavilar first assumes that Thaidakar, a leader of the Ghostbloods, was behind his assassination:
  6. @Ookla the Mildly Warm How would you wield something that's miles long?
  7. Brandon tries really, really, really hard to ground his worlds in real-life science wherever possible, and only uses hand waving as a last resort. The only hand waving example I can think of is that he had to get rid of the red shift from speed bubbles to prevent radiating everyone.
  8. I definitely did that too when I first joined. It would be nice to have an "undo" button pop up after clicking.
  9. The Coppermind is great for questions like these: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Elhokar_Kholin
  10. Only the Phone Company has access to cytonics. That's actually a huge point in the novella: that the rest of humanity is resentful of the Phone Company and spies on its operatives to try to gain that knowledge. The hypocrisy of the aliens is that, while they claim to be pacifists, they're actually a totalitarian regime that brutally suppresses any dissent. In the real world, there's no gene for violence, so I highly doubt it'd work that way with aliens. Plus, we know that they can't have that much of an aversion to violence, given that they did fight a war and are still killing humans on Detritus. I like @ZenBossanova's idea that they were just treating us like a bunch of dissidents, and we fought back.
  11. The aliens have access to a super-advance technology that humans really, really want (FTL and cytonics). Plus they're basically defenseless against the humans weapons. I think that's a recipe for a war right there.
  12. Yes, absolutely. The Google Doc even has hyperlinks to the Coppermind articles.
  13. The Red Team's first clue is: Autonomy 3 @Ookla the Skeptical @Ookla the Waiting @Ookla the Inconceivable Link to the game board The turn will end on Dec 6 at 9am EST (1400 UTC) - Link to timer (Note on the timer: the website we have been using is down, so I'm linking to a new one. If someone can find a way to embed the timers, that'd be grand. If you'd prefer for me to list your timezone explicitly, you can PM/post which one it is.)
  14. Hey everyone! Let's get started with Game 9! This time we're playing a variant suggested by @Ookla the Phoenix where all the agents are characters. We're also going to continue with the eightball variant. Should be a ton of fun! Teams: Ookla the Phoenix (Spymaster) Totally_Not_A_Worldhopper Ookla the boombox Ookla the Indefatigable Scion of the Mists (Spymaster) Ookla the Skeptical Ookla the Waiting Ookla the Inconceivable Rules: How to play - check out the initial post or the official rulebook Locking in guesses - Bold your guesses to lock them in. Only bolded guesses will count, and the Spymasters will consider them in the order they're listed. Passing turn - Your team's turn ends when one of four things happens: You've used all your guesses (number in clue + 1) You guess incorrectly (opposing agent or Innocent Bystander) The 48 hour time limit runs out Your team passes (at least half your team states pass turn in bold) Eightball variant - In order to win, your team not only has to find all your team's agents, but also the Assassin in White. Additionally, picking the Assassin in White does not immediately end the game with a loss. Instead, a sudden death mode is entered where the team has unlimited guesses (but no more clues from the Spymaster) to find all of their remaining agents. If they're successful, they win. Otherwise, they lose. Spymaster Info: Each clue must consist of a single word and a single number. The number is the number of your team's agents that relate to that clue. You can also use none or unlimited instead of a number. When posting your clue, remember to tag your teammates, create a 48 hour timer, and include a link to the game board. Other Players: Please feel free to join the game at any time. Post here or PM the Spymasters directly and we'll add you to a team. @Ookla the Phoenix @Scion of the Mists @Totally_Not_A_Worldhopper @Ookla the Skeptical @Ookla the boombox @Ookla the Waiting @Ookla the Indefatigable @Ookla the Inconceivable @Ashspren
  15. The general consensus is that Shardweapons have to be rigid metal (which rules out things like bowstrings). Even if you were able to make a 50ft long piece of razor sharp metal, you almost certainly wouldn't be able to wield it - its center of mass would be 25ft away from you, resulting in a ridiculous torque. Why are you specifying a Lightweaver? Is the idea to sneak up on people and then garrote them? I'm not sure what benefit that would have over just stabbing them.
  16. I think it's a really good question. I can't imagine that all full pilots are in on the massive secret/lie (it would be pretty impossible to keep it contained with that many people). I understand that extra protective measures would make the tape stand out more and make people curious, but I highly doubt that people aren't curious anyway. The Battle of Alta wasn't just notable for Chaser's cowardice/betrayal - it was the defining battle in the war against the Krell. It's when they finally took back the surface of their planet and when the DDF really came into existence.
  17. I don' think that people can will their Investiture resistance away. If I had metal inside my body, you wouldn't be able to suddenly Push on it just because I asked you to.
  18. I was misremembering since it's been a while since this topic was active. The big issue is that Selish magic is "region-locked." AonDor only works near Arelon, etc.
  19. I'd like to be an Editor. Hopefully I can help you make the Coppermind even better
  20. Storing Investiture in the Physical Realm is definitely something you could do (e.g. Taldain's sand, Roshars gems). You can even use aluminum to "steal" Investiture from a Shardpool. However: As you said, you'd have to hack the magic system to work with Investiture in the Physical Realm, rather than the Cognitive Realm. You'd also have to get the physical container to each of the teleportation Aons that are spread across the Cosmere, which means you'd need to teleport them there...
  21. All of those items combined would only amount to a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the power of a Shard, not enough for him to actually become a Shard.
  22. Are certain pages locked so they can't be edited? I found a typo on the cosmere page, but there's no button at the top that would let me edit the page. Instead of Read, Edit, History tabs, I'm seeing Read, View source, History.
  23. Thanks @RShara!
  24. The Ookla thing is in honor of Brandon's and Peter's (his assistant) birthdays. People change their name to Ookla of [something] as an homage. It's a pretty confusing month, especially for new members. Spoilers boxes can be inserted by clicking on the "eye" icon at the top of the text editor. See the Forum Rules for a detailed explanation, but basically try to keep spoilers in their own board (e.g. Mistborn book spoilers in the Mistborn board) or Cosmere Discussion. When posting a spoiler in a different work's board (e.g. Mistborn spoiler in a Stormlight thread), that's when you would use a spoiler box.
