In the United Sates, the month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In Canada, May 7^th is National Child and Youth Mental Health Day.

Everyone has mental health. But, like all people are unique, where everyone’s mental health is at is unique. These designated days were made to encourage people to think about their own mental health. Self-reflection is an important part of maintaining a healthy mental state.

These days also serve another purpose. Mental illness is prevalent. Many people have difficult experiences. This month let’s go out of our way to encourage people who are struggling with their mental health, and to accept them for who they are. Just because someone has a mental illness doesn’t mean they aren’t a capable, admirable, worthy person.

One way of showing people you care is by displaying the colour green. Green has become associated with mental health awareness initiatives. That’s why I updated my profile picture the way I did. I encourage others to raise awareness and acceptance in their own way as well. Together, we can reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and encourage non-judgmental discussion about this important issue.
