Sorry I haven't done any critiquing. Although with all of the great folks on here I doubt you missed me I feel bad submitting when I haven't critiqued anything for a while, but if it's alright I have a few short scenes amounting to about 1,000 words that I'd love to submit this week.

I have a character in this story I'm working on who has a drinking problem. He has been drinking on a regular basis for so long that even after a few days without alcohol, he still can't remember certain events from his past (which is the reason he's drinking) I've never been drunk, or had any alcohol at all for that matter, so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to being drunk. Is this a possible effect of drinking for long enough? Or should I maybe make it a certain additive within the alcohol that causes this effect?

No @MacThorstenson, @recneps does most certainly not like cookies. And if he does, he should change his ways

Welcome, @Unwrittend! It's good to have you along! Don't accept @MacThorstenson's cookie. They tend to be hemalurgically spiked Now that that's out of the way have fun, and have an upvote!

I'm kinda new, so I'm not exactly sure who we've done. Have we done @Toaster Retribution yet? If not that's my vote

the virtual reality video
MistbornAlpaca replied to king of nowhere's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Ooooohh, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks! In that case, yes, it looks great and I am excited because it's definitely a step in the right direction -
I loove Elantris. It is probably my favorite Cosmere book after Stormlight. I would absolutely buy it, if I were you and you can't get it at your library. It's a wonderful story, even if the Brandon Avalanche at the end is a little overwhelming. I'm on the same page as @Ammanas, I loved the character of Hrathen and his arc. So yes, buy it, even if it's just the paperback or Kindle edition.

the virtual reality video
MistbornAlpaca replied to king of nowhere's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Is anyone not excited about this?? I for one, am not. I would much rather see a TV series or movie than a VR experience. No offense to the producers, and this looks great, but I'm not very excited for this. -
Is anyone interested in meeting up in Arizona
MistbornAlpaca replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in General Brandon Discussion
@MonsterMetroid, I would definitely meet up with you... if I lived in Arizona, which I don't, so just do what @podman36 said Although podman, I would like to mention that that's totally not how I read the title. I read it as "Hey I'm a Cosmere fan in Arizona, anyone live there and want to hang out" -
@Quiver I would second this reccomendation for FFG LCGs. I actually just purchased Netrunner about a week ago, and so far I'm very satisfied... although the initial buy in did make me cringe. I don't play MTG but I've thought about it a few times and so I did some research. If I were going to get started in MTG I would buy the Deck Builder`s toolkit for the most recent set. It has everything you need, and plenty of cards for limitless deckbuilding (probably not limitless) and it's $20'ish on Amazon. Oh, and all the cards are standard legal.

Thanks for both of your answers @Kureshi Ironclaw and @hoiditthroughthegrapevine! I think I've decided where to start it, but I'll give you a little bit of an outline and see if you have any more suggestions. I do most of my outlining in my head, but I'll try to put it into writing. The main characters are all criminals of various sorts, one's a deserter with a drinking problem, another's a top-notch hacker who got backstabbed and no longer trusts anyone and a few others, but those are the two I'm focusing on. Now the situation. A black hole/void of some sort has appeared in the orbit of a series of planets. As the planets become closer and closer to the void/black hole, the government decides to send a team in to investigate, but they don't want to send their scientists/military for obvious reasons (i.e not knowing what's on the other side), so they decide to send the prison population destined for execution into the void. It's a way to investigate that keeps the military and scientists safe, and if something goes wrong, the prison guys were destined for execution anyway, so what the heck, right?? So that's what's going on, tell me what you think, but here's what I'm planning on doing. I'm giving a chapter or scene to each of the characters I mentioned, and then go right into their approach to the void and what happens afterward. Hopefully, that's enough information for you guys to give me some suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Quick tip, if you narrow down your search by just topic titles, you can find what you're looking for a whole lot faster -
Do You Use All of Your Upvotes Everyday?
MistbornAlpaca replied to MistbornAlpaca's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
Speaking of which, I just maxed out Yes @podman36, I just figured out it was upped. Apparently, I should scale back my upvote usage -
You're starting the same way I did! I started with the WoK, and it will always hold a special place in my heart Warbreaker is very heavily interwoven with Stormlight, so it might enhance your Stormlight experience to read that. And like you mentioned, Edgedancer. It really helps establish some of the characters in OB. After that, I would suggest Mistborn, just because it's so STORMING AMAZING!!!!! Yes, I do know what you mean, and Kaladin will always be my favorite character. However!!! I love all the characters (at least at this moment I can't think of anyone I dislike) and I'm really looking forward to Szeth's book (book 5), and Jasnah's book, (one of the back 5). I don't think we'll turn back to "the crew" because they're all the crew. Dalinar, Kaladin, Shallan, Jasnah, Szeth, Eshonai, Venli, Lift, Renarin, Adolin, Shallash, they're all part of "the crew", so focusing on their individual characters and backstories won't necessarily turn the books away from "the crew" (Although I do understand that you mean the original POV characters from WoK, and yes, they're still my favorite)

So I've maxed out my upvotes a few times, and I'm wondering if anyone else does this? I can give 20 upvotes a day (not sure if it increases with reputation). I've only maxed out a few times, and so I started this poll to see how many upvotes everyone gives on an average day.

Hey guys! I had an idea for a sci-fi, space opera'ish ensemble novel a while back, and I've been working on it off and on, but I can't seem to find out where to start it. The members haven't been together before, so I can't start it at the finish of their last operation. Where do I start it? Do I give a chapter/scene to each character in turn before they meet? Or dive right into their first meeting and the start of the action? I can't decide, HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Welcome, @ElvisSpren! Good to have you along! So is Stormlight the only series of Brandon's you've read so far? Have an upvote, have fun, don't accept cookies, and happy reading!

[OB] Szeth or Eshonia
MistbornAlpaca replied to Lord Mistborn Bondbreaker's topic in Stormlight Archive
Sorry, I derailed this thread ... it looks like it's back on track though, so that's good Anyway, I'm with everyone else on this. If I could choose, I would go with Szeth, just because I want more Szeth, RIGHT NOW!!!!! But I do feel like Szeth could really grow in Book 4 in a way that colors his flashbacks differently when we finally get them, so I'm okay waiting for Book 5. -

Thanks! I didn't like it either, and I didn't expect it to live very long. Thanks for killing it, good riddance. -
[OB] Szeth or Eshonia
MistbornAlpaca replied to Lord Mistborn Bondbreaker's topic in Stormlight Archive
Gotcha. I always expected it would be one of the back 5 characters that were dead before their book. I assumed after OB that Venli would become the flashback character, but I have been proven wrong. Yes, I agree that that's what will probably happen... Thanks for the WOB's @RShara! ... I literally just thought of this, and I don't have anything to back it up, and it'll probably be proved false in about a minute, but what if Timbre is Eshonai? Yeah, that theory's not going to last long. -
This is totally my own headcanon, but based one of the covers for HoA, I always imagined the tallest towers being a couple hundred feet high, and Kredik Shaw meaning "the hill of a thousand spires", I always imagined about a thousand spires of varying heights shorter than the one on the cover, equally spaced over a hilltop. Not sure how big that would actually be

[OB] Szeth or Eshonia
MistbornAlpaca replied to Lord Mistborn Bondbreaker's topic in Stormlight Archive
Is this a recent confirmation? Because Eshonai is really and truly dead, and personally, I would rather see Venli as the flashback character for book 4 than Eshonai (although Szeth would obviously be my first pick, but he's confirmed for book 5, so we'll have to wait a little longer) -
Did Sazed cause the downfall of allomantic prowess?
MistbornAlpaca replied to GrumpyGuru's topic in Mistborn
I agree that it is definitely portrayed in the books as a natural dilution. But the Lord Ruler had ruled for hundreds of years right? (It's been a year or two since I last read HoA so I'm a little rusty) My first thought was that if TLR had ruled for hundreds of years (again, not sure exactly how long), shouldn't the effect have been the same? Meaning that in Era 1 there wouldn't be many Mistborn, BUT, I think the Era 2 dilution is natural, simply because there are way less Mistborn at the end of Era 1 then there were when TLR handed out Lerasium beads.
