I admit that it's an imperfect analogy, since there isn't an effective way of creating gold (like there is with aluminum).
-
Honestly, I think this is generally how all of his magic systems work, at least to an extent. Here's another that's a bit better at explaining what I'm talking about: So yeah. I don't know if he's implied that the whole "magic has slight side effects to make using it easier" in any WoBs, but he's certainly talked about it with feruchemy, and I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume it was universal. EDIT: He actually totally confirms this in the WoB I just posted. I need to read more carefully.

Sounds almost like how gold has value in our world due to it's use in wiring!

[OB] Mechanics of Shardic projectile weapons
tmnsquirtle replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, it really is about the look of it, isn't it? I have to admit that the chakram absolutely would be the most practical. But who isn't captivated by the mental image of a ShardGun???- 17 replies

I think you may be overestimating the number of compounders in the populace. I imagine for world balance reasons, Brandon makes compounders extremely rare. The Terris people seem to be slightly more cloistered and secluded, making any twinborn very rare. Miles was probably one of (if not the only) natural-born compounder in-world at the time.

Nice find on that WoB. Magitech is really cool, so I've never been more excited to be wrong!

Why didn't Harmony help the Southern continent people
tmnsquirtle replied to Solarserpent's topic in Mistborn
Why do you think that, as opposed to something more mundane like changing the geography like he did in TFE? -
Brandon's strong suit is usually in his plotting and world building. His stories entertain the reader with new ideas and tantalizing secrets to be uncovered. They range from extremely entertaining to absolutely captivating. In The Emperor's Soul, he reminded us that he is still an artist. The novella is absolutely a work of art, and has more to say about the human condition, the existence of art, and the relationship between the two than any of his other novels. (In my opinion!)

[OB] Mechanics of Shardic projectile weapons
tmnsquirtle replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
So, just as a thought, why couldn't the spren just form itself into a large horizontal blade* sticking out of the casing immediately after firing? It would look pretty dumb, and might be too fast for the spren to actually change shapes, but it would probably work. * Imagine a metal rake, where the shape of the metal part is essentially a T with a very small perpindicular section, and switch out the tines for a massive blade.- 17 replies

To be honest, I don't know if we'll ever see the kind of widespread technological development on Roshar that we're seeing currently on Scadrial. When you have a planet whose society is all but wiped out every ~500 years (though the cycle might be permanently broken now - who knows how the desolations will work now?) it gets really hard to advance technology. Plus, if I understand correctly, Era 4 Mistborn will take place around the second arc of 5 SA books, which doesn't give them a ton of time to develop the steam engine.

What if Nightblood becomes the ultimate enemy?
tmnsquirtle replied to Ripheus23's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Interesting. I suppose that would imply that the meaning of the cosmere, so to speak, is essentially that magic is evil. To be honest, I highly doubt that Sanderson would go that direction with nightblood - it seems much more likely that he's just an extremely destructive tool. -
THEORY: "Trell" is Cultivation
tmnsquirtle replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is fantastic. Can't believe I've never seen this WoB before! Do we have any idea how many avatars autonomy has created at this point?- 39 replies

I agree. I think about this a lot, actually; one of the first questions I wanted to ask Sanderson is how the cognitive realm would be affected by a planet being settled directly between two currently occupied planets.

What if Nightblood becomes the ultimate enemy?
tmnsquirtle replied to Ripheus23's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Maybe the whole plot is that they lose his aluminum sheath, or something, and they can't find it to make him stop killing anyone that comes near. -
I wonder if there's a way to make hemalurgy permanent. Like a way to copy that little bit of spiritweb, so the spike can be removed or, god forbid, reused.

Well, we know that red means a shard is trying to impose their will on the investiture of another shard, right? So it seems more likely that there's another shard actively trying to attack Scadrial, no?
-
I suppose that based on that last sentence, I assumed that 'burning' lerasium and consuming it to become a mistborn were two fundamentally different actions.
-
Technically, you can't even burn those. Heavily implying that burning Lerasium and eating it to become a full mistborn are different things. Here's more solid evidence:

If you drank out of Ruin's shardpool, would that be like eating atium?
tmnsquirtle replied to tmnsquirtle's question in Cosmere Q&A
I have a hard time believing it would do nothing. Ingesting metal on Scadrial is important, and shardpool liquid is basically the same substance as metal atium. I guess it's possible that atium, and other godmetals, are injected into the world in a fundamentally different way than shardpools, which could change their effects... But still. Have to wonder. -
This reminds me a lot of what Jasnah does with soulcasting, actually, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a more fleshed-out ability of one of the other orders. On the other hand, I kind of expected truthwatchers to be the ones that could 'see' things, but I suppose we're going to have to wait for renarin's book to really see what he can do. Assuming he follows conventional truthwatcher rules.

tmnsquirtle posted a question in Cosmere Q&A
Sorry if the tags are weird - first time posting! -
My understanding is that moving to the cognitive realm means that your body disappears completely: either it enters the cognitive, or it becomes investiture, or something else. We don't really know. There was a discussion about this not too long ago (link below!) You would probably need some sort of power or ability or perpindicularity to actually 'see' between the realms.

Cosmere Names/Terms that you liked the sound of it
tmnsquirtle replied to goody153's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I remember reading a WoB that essentially said that all his fantasy names/titles were two words jammed together. Sky-breaker, Light-Weaver, Storm-Light, Tin-Eye, etc. It's honestly a really honest and cool way of naming things. Almost like how they would name things in-world. What would we call a massive thunderstorm that rages around the planet every week or so? High-Storm. The authenticity is the best part.- 11 replies

I'd like to point out that beings made of investiture don't think of death like we do. There's a point in WoK (or maybe WoR, I forgot) where syl says something along the lines of: "when spren die, they become shards of spren. Humans are weird because death is such a dramatic change instead of just a shattering." So I can only assume that Adolnasium would think similarly. Would shattering it be "killing" it? No. Shattering it wouldn't really mean anything drastic, as much as it would just constitute a re-structuring of the power. And since this being arose (presumably) from pure investiture, it's entirely possible that it could have been apathetic or even in favor of the process.
