I have read one of his dresden files books they aren't bad though I'm more partial to his codex of alera series. The secrets of the immortal nicholas flamel by michael scott takes beings of myth and history and blends them with magic and fantasy in the modern world. Highly recommended!

It is not hard for me to imagine things as @Calderis put it that they get frustrated dealing with mortals.Some shards like Autonomy can by intent be seen to purposely eschew or seek. While others like Ruin or Odium seek to destroy humanity and would not desire to be involved with them. While someone like Endowment would and does actively involve herself. Others such as Cultivation etc... are harder to get into the mind of. Though Harmony can indeed be ascribed to the conflict of the shards.

Brandon has revealed much in the form of his WoB on Arcanum and in his books though there is much we don't know. In short to summarize 16 individuals on the planet Yolen in the distant past splintered this thing known as Adonalsium. They each took a Shard/Portion of this thing and ascended in the same way that Vin does in HoA. Their minds become expanded and they become a source of infinite power. Odium whose vessel is Rayse is as has been indicated on a crusade to destroy the other Shards. When a vessel has splinters you sometimes get investiture fragments like spren. When the vessel is killed the power is released as happened in HoA. Hoid was present at the shattering though he did not take up a shard. As @StrikerEZ pointed out this is only a drop in the bucket.

Doubtful as we have a WoB that states that the vessel of Honor and Cultivation were in love.
