  1. There has to be some seepage where Stormlight is concerned. We don't see much exposed vegetation outside of Shinovar. The crops we've seen are in the form of rockbuds. So those buds grow in darkness, covered by a rock shell that limits or prevents exposure to sunlight
  2. Sorry. Been a minute since I read HoA.
  3. I believe it was in Fadrex City
  4. I can't be the only one who was crushed when Elkohar died the way he did.
  5. I'm surprised Shallan only got one mention. She has gotten after a slow start infinitely more interesting as the story has progressed. I agree that Steris was a bit of a throwaway character up until the end of SOS. She absolutely rocked BOM though.
  6. It takes 2 spikes to create a kandra, but once created a kandra can operate with one. Their cognitive function is impaired but they will not disassociate. But even with one spike a shard can speak with a spiked entity. Do we have confirmation that once an entity is spiked, any Shard has a means to control that Spiked entity? Or proof of the opposite, that they become open only to the shard that creates them? If any shard can control a spiked entity then that guy is a tool for any shard with designs in the Cosmere. Making a tool like that would have a frightening tendency to turn in the hand of the shard when least expected. If only the creating shard can gain control of the spiked entity then it makes no sense for a competing shard to make a kandra with anything other than its own God Metal. But even if it does not confer control, wouldn't Autonomy know that another Shard was trying to use its Connection to Scadrial to produce Kandra for an agenda that may not allign with her own? And if so would she not take steps to prevent investiture coded to her from being used in ways she did not authorize? Just too convoluted when the simple answer is Autonomy as Trell has designs on Scadrial and is creating agents to thwart Harmony. No other shards necessary.
  7. It's my understanding that shards can only control the entities associated with them. Harmony can control his own kandra; they hold a part of the investiture keyed to him. He cannot control Bleeder. Speaking of Bleeder, it may not think it can be controlled but it has a spike; someone has its leash. If it gets out of line it can be yanked back. That's a weakness of Hemalurgy; the entity that is spiked becomes open to influence. The more spikes the more influence. How many spikes does Bleeder have?
  8. If the metal was a different God metal than Trellium and another shardic entity lied and called it Trellium, that would make some sense. If another shardic entity stole some Trellium and used it to make new kandra then that becomes problematic for that other shardic entity because that entity wouldn't be in control of the kandra they made. The entity that controls that kandra would be Trell aka Badvadin aka Autonomy. Why would a different shard use a spike from Autonomy's pantheon knowing that they would not be able to control the tool they made? The only way that could possibly work out is if this unknown shard and Trell had an alliance. And if they had an alliance then what does Trell get out of it? Trell doesn't need another entity to do what has been done. Unless you're proposing that yet another Shard invested in Scadrial besides Ruin, Preservation and Autonomy. YMMV but for me? I don't buy it.
  9. And I think 7 heartbeats is a sign that Maya is awakening. Adolin probably won't be able to hear her outside a Perpendiculary until and unless he goes Edgedancer, but I believe her healing has progressed enough to where he can summon her early.
  10. Undirected investiture is like the Highstorms of Roshar. They have some benefits; Rosharan people generally live longer and are more resistant to disease, but it doesn't really do anything unless wielded by a sapient mind ir 2 in Roshar's case. Maya couldn't have been healed by the Perpendiculary alone. The Perpendiculary only provides an environment conducive to healing; the healing itself must be at least partially directed. A connection with the spiritual realm may give a character clues on the method but that character must implement it.
  11. I think it's both. Adolin had a pre exiting gem bond with Mayalaren. He treats her and thinks of her in a similar fashion as our protagonists with living blades and has done so for years. That interaction begins an incomplete healing. Then the journey through Shadesmar happens and he is able to directly interact with Maya. Seeing her as she really is really brings home to Adolin that she's more than just a blade but a sentient entity who is currently stripped of most cognitive functions. That strengthens their bond and it's what allows her to defend him before the Perpendiculary opens. During the Dalinar MOA, the 3 Realms converge, giving Maya enough wattage to zero in on the pre existing bond and make herself heard. It's faint because she still isn't fully awake, but due to Adolin's treatment of her and his growing awareness of who and what she truly is, they are able to communicate in a limited fashion. The Perpendiculary acts as a signal boost; I do not expect him to be able to communicate with her under normal circumstances; more still needs to happen. I do expect him to be able to summon Maya without having to wait ten heartbeats like the rest of the dead blades. I believe something that helps the bond is that he already acts in a way that's compatible to the KR order she belongs to. Now that the Spren are returning, he likely would draw a Cultivation Spren already had he not possessed Maya. Now though, I'm of the assumption that both Maya and Adolin would reject intervention by another Spren. I agree with Calderis; one of the prerequisites for a full Awakening by Maya is for Adolin to progress to 3rd Oath status without guidance. Maybe Lyft can help.
  12. So you believe it's possible that one of the unknown Shards may be masquerading as Autonomy's avatar that we call Trell? I don't know if it makes narrative sense to introduce another Shard that we have had no clues to its existence. There have been indications of Autonomy's existence, even a book about one of her Shardworlds (2 if you count First of the Sun). Of course Brandon can do what he wants and we have to meet the other unknown Shards eventually, but we know that Autonomy deals in Avatars and that Trell is a known entity of Badvadin's pantheon. It'd be a hell of a way to introduce a new shard.
  13. All of Autonomy's avatars are still Autonomy. Basically Trell would be stealing investiture from herself. As far as another Shard taking it, wouldn't that Shard's native Investiture resist Autonomy's? I honestly don't know what happens when shards touch each other. Pres/Ruin were polar opposites so they repelled each other but we don't know about other shards. But even if it's possible for another Shard to steal Autonomy's Investiture and forge a Trellium spike, that spiked creature becomes open to Trell's influence, basically becoming Trell's agent regardless of the other Shard's intentions.
  14. Cognitive aspects are defined by sapient species, how they think about the world and the objects within. When I postulated about the elemental set, I was thinking in terms of each of these concepts are huge and monolithic in scope. When people think of the Sea, generally they are thinking of one entire entity, as opposed to thinking of land as many separate things (street, grass, sidewalk, mountain, plateau, ect.)
  15. Well we know that Brandon can and has changed his mind on the order of books. Remember that originally Stones Unhallowed, Szeth's book, was supposed to come 3rd in the sequence and now it's Book 5. There's hope that we'll get Jasnah sooner.
  16. I think Jasnah and her flashbacks get book 6 (although the order has changed before). Until we get her book all we'll get is some tantalizing hints.
  17. That would explain why Eshonai kept having to suppress the old rhythms despite being in Stormform.
  18. The problem with that is that the only form that shows interest is the one specialized to show it, Mateform. All I'm saying is that if singers are simply asexual outside of Mateform instead of neuter, then other genders should not exist. An asexual male is just a male uninterested in sex. That does not make him a different sex altogether. Gender is a biological designation not a frame of mind. If he/she has the parts and they work then that singer is a male/female. Uninterested is a frame of mind; one can be forced to comply regardless of interest. Brandon may want to backpedal on the asexual instead of neuter thing but he already established in the text that different genders exist. Hard to do without a ret con.
  19. Sounds to me like I need another reread is in order for me. I totally missed that. However I don't think it was ever indicated that Warform is malen/femalen but like I said, rereads are needed. I do believe there are forms that Singers can access that aren't Odium-based. Singers and spren pre-date Odium's arrival in-system after all. Problem is, it would have been a simple matter for Odium to excise knowledge of those older forms from the Singer consciousness either magically or by using mundane methods. I think part of Venli's eventual story arc will be to rediscover those ancient forms and spread that knowledge to the Singers. That way there won't be a repeat of Melishi's abomination.
  20. I can see a scenario where someone tries to get terribly pragmatic in regards to Kaladin and his growing power base. Nobles are funny in that way. They don't like new players in their great game; those are always seen with suspicion.
  21. Ok. Only 2 confirmed male/female. 0 confirmed malen/femalen. But now I'm confused. If most Listener forms are asexual instead of true neuters, then what need for different sexes to accommodate them? One can be asexual without being neuter; a large percentage of the fandom thinks Jasnah is asexual and there's no question of her femininity.
  22. The problem with saying a Singer has to adopt a form of power in order to form a Nahel bond is that those forms are acquired by bonding a Voidspren. Venli seems to be a special case to me; she wasn't the one Timbre originally ventured out of CR for. And just because we didn't see Timbre before Eshonai switched to Stormform doesn't mean she wasn't there. It's possible that I'm wrong, but if SzethIsBadAsHell is correct then any Spren that seeks to bond with a Regal-form Singer must subdue and trap the Voidspren that give him/her form before the bond allows a user to draw Stormlight. Not sure that many spren will have the skill on one hand or the inclination on the other to take the extra step involved in bonding to a Singer. There are forms that are asexual, but they haven't shown up in the narrative. We've never knowingly seen a malen/femalen on screen. Keep in mind that the Listener songs indicate that there are many forms, possibly hundreds of them. The Listeners only discovered 3, Warform, Nimbleform, and Workform (when they abandoned Odium's cause they were stripped down to Dullform and Mateform); none of those forms had the malen/femalen variant and so could reproduce. The other forms we've seen are forms of power, Stormform, Envoyform and Scholarform (looks like Nimbleform). There's more going on with Singers from different lands having the same customs as their former masters than just a blithe "well that's just what they observed". The Everstorm returned their Identity which allowed them to express Connection (connection in the Realmatic sense). Thaylen Singers know how to sail even though Thaylen sailors rarely employed Parsh slaves on their vessels. Aziran Singers know how to read and write well enough to write petitions for overdue wages; before the Everstorm they couldn't read at all, could barely speak. The way they reflect the culture they came from indicates more than just a mimicry of learned behavior. They weren't really able to observe anything in their previous form. Otherwise Sai would not have needed to be taught how to play a card game he observed being played hundreds of times when his mind was still shackled.
  23. Just thinking of possible places for a Vessel to stash extra power intentionally instead of letting it accumulate naturally in a Shardpool. BoM spoiler behind the tag.
  24. We already know humankind doesn't have a monopoly on Vessels. We know Ambition was a Sho Del (whatever that is) and we know from WOB that one of the Shards we haven't met yet is held by a dragon.
  25. Can someone sling me an excerpt? I don't remember Kaladin having any reflections on Jasnah's attractiveness in the narrative. I could have missed it.
