  1. As well as it seeming a strange use of Hoid's time I feel there could be inconsistencies with his timing of appearing in the era 2 books. But while I'm sceptical, it could be possible I suppose? Oh and does the quote about being inside a greatshell imply it was by choice? I mean it's Hoid, he doesn't do much that he doesn't choose, but still.
  2. I think it's unlikely for this reason?
  3. I really like that you noticed this (I didn't) and I think that's a likely thing. On time period, I have no issue with it being pre-Recreance. There's no indication it was well known. This was Gavilar, the dude who found out about seriously obscure ancient lore, including the means by which Parshmen were created. He could be talking about shortly after the Oathpact was broken. I always expected the Shin to be a serious problem after those blades were left there and it would be surprising if, for 4000 years, they've managed to avoid any incidents of abuse. Something to add to my tentative head canon.
  4. Just to clarify @Calderis point, her heritage is Southern Scadrial (just coz culture can be appropriated), and she was born in Silverlight. So no dice unfortunately.
  5. @Oversleep, @The One Who Connects, it's here. Click on the messages/posts and it's one of the first.
  6. Nothing much to add except that's pretty much my head canon (with you adding a decent realmatic explanation for it). I like it, but I fear it will be a long time until we know more. My only qualification is that I'm not sure that just any old shade- transition will do it or I feel there'd be too many?
  7. Here's the very handy thread that @ZenBossanova started. This is my first time pre- reading a book as I avoided this site until I'd read every Sanderson book and that was post-BoM. I was active when AU came out but that was different. I hope I don't spoil anything for myself but even if I do there's no way I would have it in me to avoid it. Discussions on this site make me enjoy the books so much more, and this is my first chance to theorize
  8. I seem to be the only one who didn't imagine the Nightwatcher as anything but a person. I'm not the most imaginative though. And I'm glad to see my Oathvember ridiculousness has caught on (unless people were saying that way before me and this is an 'inventing the Internet' incident :D)
  9. Yeah I'm amazed at people's disgust towards Moash. He's absolutely no different to Kaladin except that Kaladin changed his mind at the very last moment. The assassination attempt was understandable (Kaladin was into it). The punch seemed to honestly horrify him. And his PoV had him feeling terrible and like he'd chosen the wrong side in the end. He probably chose the wrong side but so did Kaladin almost.
  10. My thoughts Firstly on the human issue. I agree that its about the spiritweb changing and the threshold is way below that of a Shard I think that is what the WoB is referring to On the issue of Preservation 'splintering' Ruin I see it this way. Firstly, it seems like most of the purpose of Ruin's prison was as a counter measure, providing a balanced reaction to every move Ruin made That counter - balancing itself is very Preservation. It's countering actions. What's the opposite of action? Inaction, starus quo, preservation. So the question is how did he split off part off Ruin in the first place? Even that could be preservationy, or more likely Leras did so before Preservation's Intent took over his ability to filter that Intent the way he wished. So I don't think Preservation's behavior is non-preservationy on its face. Otherwise the theory has some merit, but I think it more comes back to the idea that a Shard's intent operates externally not internally. Like Leras must Preserve other things but can sacrifice himself. Ruin must ruin things but can preserve himself. I'll have to think on more details, but they're my initial, post-wakeup thoughts.
  11. You like cats. I like people who like cats.
  12. Ooh nice @The One Who Connects. I hadn't seen that and Higgs field manipulation hadn't occurred to me. That's very cool confirmation. Is there no end to the fun of the Brandon Particle.
  13. @Calderis I don't think it's so easily wrapped up though. About the WoB specifically. I agree with the likely conclusions but they're not certain. Firstly, in terms of people without Breath, we don't know they could see Hoid's aura even without him suppressing it. There is a mix of factors. One of those could be the planet, or their lack of Breath. There is wiggle room there. Secondly, in terms of people with Breath, he's noted that in the general context of abilities that detect investiture, that doesn't indicate so much that an aura is visible to someone below the 1st heightening on Roshar, it's more about the general ability for investiture detection to recognize Hoid. By the wording at least. So I think that WoB helps but doesn't settle it. And I still want to know if a drab will see the aura of a person with many Breaths. Surely we know whether drabs see the aura around a Returned? It seems like a strange thing to not know so there must be a ready answer.
  14. Oh i just posted this on the other thread, but So sounds like it's actively suppressed by both of them but that it should otherwise still be visible on Roshar? Also it's possible that drabs can't see it but non-Nalthians without Breath can. I don't know the answer to either though. And I feel I should.
  15. Hmmm this is an interesting WoB So it should be visible on Roshar without it being suppressed. A number of reasons though.
  16. interesting @Calderis, that could be right. And feruchemically it's not shuttling abilities through time, it's converting your own mass into specifically attuned investiture when you store and converting out back when you tap.
  17. To respond to @Calderis spoiler
  18. Yeah it's one of the things that is playing the loosest with science, but it is mass (which of course the planet is irrelevant to). Here are some WoBs in chronological order.
  19. I think the effort at suppressing is almost subconscious but effort is required (From the annotations)
  20. The mechanics of suppressing divine breath are interesting. Here are another couple of hints And on finding WoBs, I seldom remember it exactly but usually once I've seen one, or particularly needed to find one, i remember the source. It gets easier once you do it a lot
  21. I'd like to hear from Spool for the same reason, but I'm a bandwagon kinda guy so I'll jump in with my man @Calderis. We competed for a while there but you've relegated me to perpetual bridesmaid on my best days, and we're a similar age and mindset, so may as well hear something about you
  22. Nice WoB gathering @The One Who Connects. Though I must admit I'm not at all confident that any of those WoBs establish that we have not seen a Dustbringer or proto-Dustbringer yet. To recap The first one doesn't say we don't see one, it says we won't know the Second Ideal until we get a main character. The second one says nothing but, at a stretch, could argue that the Dustbringers would accept him. The third one only says that we will have one of the Dustbringers as a viewpoint character and that we haven't seen that character yet, and that there's something uniquely complicated and weird about the Dustbringers. It does not imply that there is no other Dustbringer that we've seen. I don't think Adolin is or will be a Dustbringer. But I think those WoBs don't lend weight either way and there may be some (understandable) confirmation bias going down.
  23. That was one of the best scenes from one of the very best episodes @Weltall
  24. @Calderis I appreciate anyone with a non-dogmatic belief system. I also love the Aurelius quote. What I believe isn't very important, but my favorite belief system, what I'd like to believe in, is One. The idea that we're all fragments of One, born to have varying experiences that are eventually recombined into One, to better understand the universe. Your experience as a non-proselytizing atheist will be welcomed
