  1. Eeehhhhhh I'm probably trying to play Odium's Advocate a little to hard. I'm still not entirely convinced that there is no way round this, we don't know quite enough about focii or First of the Sun to make it inconceivable that there's another explanation that will make sense in hindsight. But as it is supporting my own belief, that metal is the only way to steal anything contained in a spirit web and pass it on, I'll stop trying to find holes
  2. I said it on the events thread, but this does not confirm that only metal can be used for hemalurgy. It confirms that IF you use metal for hemalurgy, more than one is required as you're stealing multiple powers. I firmly believe you can only use metal. But going to another planet could add a new focus. This community has railed against using WoBs as absolute authority if there's any doubt, and I don't see that reading from the wording. But is it another nail in the coffin of a theory I never liked? Definitely.
  3. Favourite movie is Lord of the Rings, easily. Not only is it the best adaptation ever made of fantasy (yes, I include ASoIaF), it is the thing that got me into fantasy, a condition from which I’ve never recovered. After seeing it, I read the books, then all the Tolkien books, then slowly migrated through Feist, Hobb, Weeks and others until discovering Brandon. All thanks to the first person to truly translate fantasy to the screen. Lasagne I’m fond of. I’m a vegetarian now though, so lasagne is a bit harder, but eggplant or textured soy protein still makes a good one Which Cosmere characater would fit it with my family? That’s a really interesting question. My family is full of honest, giving people with a lot of confidence but very little arrogance, and an outrageous sense of humour combined with a natural moderate religious conservatism. Lightsong would fit in very well, which is probably why he’s the character I enjoy to read the most. Hoid would definitely fit (but Brandon’s warnings that he does some pretty bad things means he would superficially fit in only). Wayne would fit nicely as well. Kaldin’s story and courage would fit in but not so much his personality. I’d say Lightsong the most. He may be a bit anti-religious, but then I feel that if a family member was actually a ‘god’ they would be instinctively against being worshipped
  4. This recent WoB from @Darkness' beautiful Sydney effort is the most compelling I know to establish that It was specific to hemalurgy but the last sentence indicates that (and that's always been my head-canon).
  5. Silmarillion by so far. Maybe the best story ever written. The most beautiful creation myth and so much glory, tragedy, heroism, suffering and epic scale for so few pages.
  6. I certainly never believed the focus changed, but I see the point (having woken up a bit more). If the focus changed surely it would on a different planet, or not at all. I still think there's an argument that a focus can be added rather than changed on a different planet, for those who believe the focus can change. But I get it, it's another, stronger, argument against that. Which I'm down with as it was always my belief. Still, I think there's some room to move for the changing-focus crowd.
  7. What am I missing here folks? The question is conditional and asks what type of metal. Brandon doesn't seem to say that only metals can be used. That's my firm belief anyway but I just don't see an explicit confirmation that ONLY a metal can be used. I love the question and the answer because of the confirmation of spiking both aviar and human, but I just don't see it being conclusive. Enlighten me
  8. Sweet, that's the next one of Chaos' awesome ranks I'm looking forward to (#thesestupidranks). Imma take you down. (in tarachin. not rep )
  9. I'm not gonna beat around the bush, PZ, idioms are a waste of time and should be avoided at all costs
  10. The awful little flying cremlings with creepy wings and echo-location. Like the Braizian offspring of a sky eel and a chicken after bonding with a voidspren. They unsettle me. OK one of my travel highlights was seeing a million or so fly out of a mountain in Cambodia. But up close - hideous.
  11. Here's a list of some pet peeves I can think of. Because I... would like this present topic of conversation to change. Ending sentences with prepositions Trying to end some sentences without a preposition without sounding archaic Bats Sticky labels that are too sticky The bus I'm on right now Mauve. Well, the word mauve. f. Like, the lower case letter f. Completely ridiculous looking letter. People asking how you can see traffic lights when you're red-green colorblind The word ambulatory. It doesn't mean what it sounds like it should mean Idioms There things to discuss other than the definition of race and racism
  12. Welcome more I'm glad you're feeling comfortable enough to actively post and try not to feel intimidated, it was others answering my questions that taught me! Don't be afraid to propose theories that may be wrong, that's part of the process
  13. It was Pagerunner's reddit connection, which is easy coz you can search for parts of words. Theoryland's search function sucks though, yeah. Always all about the right key word, which is the thing I tend to remember well.
  14. Hoid can hide his investiture, coz he's a realmatic ninja. @Calderis the magic word on that one is suppress
  15. @FiveLate I'm really sorry to see this. You put quite a bit of effort into your posts and you came up with some pretty unique ideas. I encourage you to think about the upvotes you netted rather than the downvotes you got, even if for some strange reason you got that many (and I honestly don't understand how) far more people thought it was good than bad. But I understand as well and I wish you the best with your own personal journey. I hope we'll see more of you soon.
  16. A Shard can be voluntarily dropped. So it's possible. But boy there would be some game theory in play. Who drops first...
  17. Ooooh pets. Than I must share Kitty! (Official name Toast, spirit name Midnight Essence). Definitely not as cute as that Pomeranian. But, well, the essence of a cat. What you'd get if an alchemist distilled a dozen cats, and when the crucible had cooled this was lying in the bottom: a cat in its pure form
  18. Krakow
  19. It probably isn't a planet but may be a Shard'world' - Silverlight
  20. Ha yeah, I always had a head meter canon but didn't realize that was the proper structure (with the third beat). I think the only one I ever got properly right was this piece of stupidity
  21. When you hate names that are also words ( eg Felt, Miles) because they're storming hard to search for references. Like, you hate them in real life. Go around insulting people with names like Cliff, yelling at them that they're unsearchable, muttering that they're probably worldhoppers.
  22. It counts as metal for allomantic purposes, but it's very hard. Investiture resists investiture and Shardblades are extremely invested. Sharplate a bit less so but still high. Here's a great description. Perhaps a duralumin push/pull would. But I have my doubts. Maybe TLR with duralumin or a lerasium mistborn with it.
  23. I've always been baffled at the anti - Lift sentiment. I absolutely love her. Lift forever!!! Boooo to all the Lift haters. BOOOO.
  24. Here's a few more mostly around linguistics but also some influences from Judaism and the kabbalah
  25. I only just vote Stormlight but Name of the Wind needs to be on there Well, Kingkiller Chronicles
