Mid-Range Game 42: The Auction of Lord Winsting
StrikerEZ replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I don't understand why you think it's a terrible idea. I find it hard to believe that the village wouldn't have enough bodyguards to at least take turns covering Flogs for long enough for him to scan players for us for awhile to at least make up for the fact that Bleeder will be doing everything in their power to kill him. If Karnage survives this lynch, then we know for sure that he's actually Flogs. All of the village bartenders PM him, and he tells one of them to protect him, alternating who he tells each cycle. If Karnage doesn't survive the lynch, then we've caught an elim. -

Hmm. This is very interesting. I kind of agree with Pyro. At first, I thought it was odd that he voted on Karnage (I was about to recommend we lynch him or at the very least recommend someone kill him). His latest explanation kind of makes sense. If Karnage is Flogs, we'll find out for sure if we lynch him again. And if he isn't, then we call his bluff and either lynch an elim or Bleeder. If he is telling the truth, it shouldn't be too hard for the village bodyguards to go about trying to keep him alive. If he isn't telling the truth, then we lose nothing and gain the death of an elim/Bleeder. If Karnage isn't Flogs, the real Flogs should NOT come out and counter-claim. Karnage -

I was about to post a vote count myself, but it seems like Archivist has beaten me to it. I got the same vote count that he did, so that's probably accurate. @Furamirionind I explained my vote for Karnage earlier, but I'll summarize it real quick: I feel like Karnage isn't trying to vote on anyone he finds suspicious, just trying to vote on someone who he thinks will get lynched. While that's a valid strategy, it's usually best to back something like that up with suspicions, so you're not just blindly following the whims of bandwagons. I'm also not a fan of him linking Sart and Araris together so much. I don't really see the connections he sees between those two, and it seems like he's trying to set up the lynch on Sart to either frame or clear Araris (depending on how Sart flips). As for Emi and Pyro's votes, I don't like how they both hopped onto the bandwagon as soon as I voted for Karnage. At least Pyro's given some thoughts of his own about why he wants to lynch Karnage. @Emi Why do you want to lynch Karnage? Honestly, I'm amazed at how much activity we have going on right now. Over 200 posts in just the first cycle of this game. That's almost a third of the posts the LG I ran last summer had, and that game had a lot of activity. -

This is the post that set me off. Araris made it pretty clear that the reason he was "bandwagoning" was because of the 3 vote minimum for the lynch this cycle. While I don't necessarily agree with Araris's reasoning (I think it is possible to avoid needlessly bandwagoning, even despite the high vote minimum for a lynch), I think Araris did a pretty good job of explaining his reasons. What really set me off though was the fact that Karnage went through a whole two paragraphs of saying why he doesn't trust Araris and then decides to vote Sart because he can't get Araris lynched. First off all, I don't understand why he's linked Sart and Araris like he has, and also, why not vote where your suspicions are? Isn't voting for Sart also bandwagoning, like you claim Araris is doing? Voting on someone you're actually suspicious of, even if it doesn't seem like a lynch could form on them yet, is much better than voting on someone that you think is going to get lynched. To me, it just seems like Karnage was trying to throw shade at Araris, but didn't want to put a vote there because he'd rather guarantee a lynch somewhere else. -

I’m gonna go ahead and throw a vote on Karnage. The logic in his posts just feels weird to me. I don’t quite get why he ended up voting on Sart and seems so certain his alignment is linked with Araris’s alignment. In addition, I’m a fan of getting more people up to possibly be lynched. Gets people talking, either to defend someone or to jump on a bandwagon and get a villager lynched. -

So, I’ll probably come back later today once I’ve gone through and looked for actual suspicions and stuff, but I wanted to throw my hat in about something real quick. I think I agree with Straw about infolynching. Yes, lynching someone who has had many interactions with other players can provide info on those players. But, the moment we say that we’re lynching them solely for that information, we lose valuable information that could come after that. If the lynch train forms after the mention of the infolynch, many of the votes lose their value. I can understand wanting to lynch someone for info, but that being the sole reason to lynch someone defeats the purpose by decreasing the amount of info gained from someone’s lynch. -

Just popping in real quick to say I’m confused by this. Also confused by the suspicion on Straw. His posts haven’t read very elim-y to me. They read like Straw has been sounding in every game I’ve played with him in the last few months. Very analytical, trying to get reads out of people, tends not to back down much. Granted, I do think Straw is a good enough player to keep that same tone even as an elim, but I’m going to go with Occam’s razor here and say that if I think he’s a villager, the simplest solution is that he is one. (Also, other people could use the razor for themselves and decide he must be an elim; that’s perfectly valid). I don’t feel comfortable making a vote right now because I don’t really have any other reads on anyone else. Plus it’s almost 3 am and voting right now seems like a bad idea. -

Honestly, it’s worth a celebration when I don’t die in the first couple cycles of the game. Not that I mind dying early. I did at first, but I’ve kinda taken it as a badge of honor almost. It’s my thing. But @The Young Pyromancer, trying to change how you play to stop people from lynching you isn’t going to help. What’s going to help is just playing as you want and being as honest as you can be. Eventually people will be able to read you better. But constantly shifting your play style around to avoid suspicion isn’t really going to help much. -

First off, welcome to all the new players! It's awesome seeing so many new faces in the games! It's been a long time since I've played with so many people I didn't already know. Secondly, just want to ask @A Joe in the Bush something about the PMs. The one message we can send per turn, does that just mean we can only open one PM per turn, or we can literally only send one message? Lastly, time to get some thoughts about the game out. I was going to do something like what xino did, but I should've known he would've already done it by now. He basically had all the same kinds of thoughts I've had about the game. Just would like to say that I think we need to be very careful about when or if we disperse. I would not put it past Joe to put in something like 9 elims this game, just to throw us off since we're all probably assuming that there's 7-8 elims based on percentage alone. At that point, I would assume that the elims wouldn't have very many powerful roles. That would be more than made up by the extra elim though. I'm not sure how much I believe this theory, but I know I definitely would've considered that distribution if I were running this. Just to make it more likely that the constables would have a chance to win by getting the village to disperse when they believe they've found the last elim. -

All bartenders except for one person who isn't. -
Ah yes, maybe that’s where I got the idea from in the first place.

@Elbereth @little wilson and anyone else talking about the skindancer wincon problem. What if they don’t have to specifically sabotage the arcane fields and one other one, but any five fields they choose. Solves the problem of nine fields being too many fields to go into without forcing the elims to go into certain fields.

Trying to edit in a quote doesn’t really work. But, in the future @Dot, do try to avoid double posting. -
@Elbereth @little wilson Thank you guys so much for running this game! I had so much fun trying to plan out what I was going to do while I was still sane, and I loved the process of getting tuition reductions and stuff. @Young Bard I’m a bit sad that you guys sabotaged me the same turn that I got my Talent Pipes. I was just about to not have to worry about tuition anymore when it was all ripped away from me. I’m glad that I was right about me being the sabotage though. Also not surprised it was also a WGG. Overall, this was a really, really fun game. Even despite not knowing anything about the books themselves. I’m greatly looking forward to the next iteration of this game!

Okay, so an interesting conversation started up in the discord server earlier, and I felt like it'd be interesting to come here and let everyone give their thoughts about it. What do people think of players choosing to either completely ignore their GM PM or look at it and, if they're an elim, ignore the identities of their teammates?

You can play without giving a name! And if you do decide to give a name, it's just for a character that you're going to be role-playing as. You don't have to do that if you don't want to. -

Unless I misread the rules, PMs are 1 per cycle. And all the roles are not single-use, unless they specifically say so. Also, signing up as Variel. A man many people have only heard of, but not quite seen. He's kept quiet so far, though now might be the time for him to stick his neck on the line this time. You don't have to give a name. It's just for if you want to do Role-Play (RP). -
Don’t be sorry for your vote! I understand why you’re voting on me. I voted on Fura at not the best time. And I’ve kind of accepted that stuff like this happens. I take it as a badge of honor. So, I’m not too worried about dying. Normally I think I’d vote on Mist at this point, but I’m feeling reckless right now. I’m going to vote on TGK. I’m not super suspicious of him, but his tone has been giving me weird vibes. And I don’t particularly suspect any of the other people with just one vote on them.
-
Maybe I am?????? Hmmm. I guess I should probably reread things before posting about them based on faulty recollections of what was said.
-
Yeah, that’s a pretty fair analysis of my posting style. I’ve been kind of overdoing it this game, but I do tend to overuse quite a bit. It’s mostly just my way to show that “hey, I’m saying this thing I kinda believe, but mostly this is a joke.” Also, I’m not gonna try arguing with you about your vote on me because I think your reasoning behind it is perfectly valid. I did phrase things in that first post in away that could give people a false sense of security. I’m just gonna say, are you sure I’m the person you suspect the most? If that’s the case, then leave your vote. I don’t mind.
-
I was really only bringing it up again as a joke. If the at the end didn’t tip you off, sorry.
-
That makes sense. I’m not super glued to the idea of them being elims (and would find it very surprising if they both were elims), but I think it’s important to not clear people too early. Maybe I’m going too hard on the other side of the spectrum.
-
Really? Am I just being paranoid? I mean, I do think it’s more likely that Sart is village than not, but BR’s vote and the timing of her vote (when everyone still only had just one vote) are not enough to clear her in my opinion.
-
Definitely Sart, maybe. I’m a little less likely to clear BR for her vote. It very easily could’ve been a vote to distance herself from Rae. Especially with all the hedging she did about agreeing with her but also disagreeing. I think if we’re going to clear anyone for their votes, you’re probably the most cleared. I could see a world where Sart is an elim and chose to vote on Rae. It’s more likely if Kidpen is also an elim, but it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for me to imagine elim!Sart condemning Rae for the villager brownie points. @DrakeMarshall Welcome to the game!!
