  1. Some of the mixing can be explained in the way the Shards reflect each other. Dominating someone requires you to have their devotion, and devoting yourself to someone in a way allows them to dominate you. They're not direct opposites like Preservation and Ruin, but they do go hand in hand.
  2. AonDor works by channeling the Dor through symbols. Once the metal was carved off, no symbol, no more power. You'd have to infuse the Dor into the metal somehow, which I don't know if that's possible. And even then, you might have an identity issue when burning the metal. And then you'd have the Dor, raw uninstructed Dor, coursing through you. Maybe not healthy, but hard to say.
  3. Mistborn: Secret History sploilers Based on connections between characteristics in the cognitive realm and their respective magic systems, I've speculated that the Cosmere is divided into sections referred to as Astral Planes, with each one having unique characteristics and extending through both the physical and cognitive realms. With that in mind, I think magic systems are created by an interaction between the Shards and the Astral Planes, not the planets. But largely speculation. Read it before your edit, but I agree with it now.
  4. To clarify, I meant whether Brandon's decision to have Aluminium be a investiture sink/weirdness, happened before, during, or after Mistborn. I know aluminum was in the cosmere before Mistborn, but its unclear as to whether Brandon has intended during the creation of Mistborn for Aluminium to to be an investiture sink, or if it evolved into that afterwards.
  5. There is some wiggle room there. It is unclear if Brandon is talking in-world or narrative wise. In-world Aluminum was weird before the shattering, making it older than the metallic arts. But narrative wise, I'm not sure if Mistborn or aluminium-weirdness came first.
  6. Bad link. I think the location depends more on their location in space, or the astral plane, than the planet itself. Hard to be sure at this point, just speculation on my part.
  7. @Weltall The original question was in regards to how Odium splintered the other shards, which all held the power equally as long. So I was comparing his strength to their, not to the two duoshards(counting the Dor). Part of his ability is skill, but the other part is his not investing resulting in more useable power.
  8. Brandon has stated that the shard's started out the same size. He has also noted that Odium originally avoided investing anywhere so he would have more power available to him than the other shards. He has since be, possibly against his will/preference, invested in the Roshar system, although to what amount is unknown. That said, the Shards are not infinite. What Brandon answered in that question was whether the power can run out. The power a shard uses is not gone, its simply been put to purpose, and isn't available for immediate use. The power can be reclaimed, but the details on how this process works is not fully know. Example, when an Allomancer burns pewter, he uses Preservation's power, which turns into kinetic energy, and eventually somehow makes its way back to Preservation. But Secret History indicated that the power Ruin and Preservation used in building Scadrial could not readily be retrieved. So Odium was originally equal, and took steps to avoid investing in order to have more power available for use. But he is invested in Roshar, but its unknown how he would compare to other shards.
  9. Magic systems begin as a natural occurrence from the Shard's power and the world. But as shown by Preservation, the shards can actively change the powers, although it is unknown what degree they can do so to. In world, I think the astral plane Scadrial is located on is what allows Aluminum to be so involved in the Metallic Arts. Narrative wise, I think Brandon came up with an awesome magic system before deciding aluminum does what it does.
  10. It is very difficult to take spren off of Roshar. More likely, the Ire's device functions entirely from AonDor. That said, they could potentially function using similar mechanics.
  11. The Stormfather is the Hightstorm, always has been. Tanavast's cogntive shadow is what joined the SF after Honor's death. The SF changed after that, but he existed long before.
  12. I'm not sure that's a good comparison, just because we don't know exactly how the stormlight cycle works. Its not confirmed if both Culti and Honor are powering the highstorm, they're equally doing so or not, or if just one of them is. The influence in accessing stormlight through the surgbinding is influenced by both shards, but the original question asked which shard powered the systems.
  13. All magics on Sel are fueled by the Dor, which is equal parts Dominion and Devotion. Brandon has described all the magic systems on Sel as variations of the same system, in that they all use symbols to access and control the Dor. But some systems do show a deviation to either of the Shards. Notably, turning into an Elantrian appears to be driven by Devotion, as several of the Elantrians are described as being extremely devoted to something before and after their transformation. Dakhor on the other hand requires the domination of other in order to grant, and sometimes power, their abilities. Forgery on the other hand doesn't appear to be obviously aligned with either Intent. So long answer short, all the magic systems on Sel are powered by the Dor, both Devotion and Dominion. But the method of accessing the Dor can in some cases be aligned with one of the Shards.
  14. I would like to propose another interpretation on the WoB, which is that Nightblood is better able to communicate with/influence them, as in they'll pay more heed to him, not that he can reach out to them any easier. In other words, the effort to reach them is the same, but once spoken to they are more easily influenced to to weaker minds. Not saying that interpretation is correct, that's just what came to mind when I read the annotations, without a pov from Nightblood it is hard to say any more. That said, Secret History showed that people with cracked souls, insane or otherwise, can hear things from the cognitive realm. Depending on how Nightbloods telepathy works, cognitive being my guess, it would be sense that NB would have an easier time making initial contact. As I'm typing, it occurs to me that I don't remember any instance where Nightblood was able to communicate with a person unless they had touched him first, the sole exception being the possibly insane fisher.
  15. Ah, I had forgotten about the bullet stunt. I hadn't expected spikes to be equal in the affect they had on the soul as most systems we see have some nuance to them, but the bullet makes a good case for it.
  16. @Calderis If the Set was shown to use different spikes(size, placement, or otherwise), then a blanket statement of 4 spikes would be fine. But we don't have enough details to show whether different spikes or spike placements have the same cracking effect on a soul.
  17. The original question was in regards to control, not influence, specifically from a human standpoint, not Harmony. My comment was in regards to the size of the spike, not the charge. From earrings to inquisitor spikes, the changes they make in the user are very different and may result in larger holes in the spiritweb.
  18. I would chalk this up to the English language having no gender neutral singular pronoun, and thus Brandon defaults to the use of 'he'.
  19. As stated before, its a bit more complicated than a simple threshold. Firstly, it depends on the change the spike creates. A simple earring allows harmony to interact with people, but produces no change in the wearer and likely no/tiny hole in the soul, so not controlling. For Kandra, their spikes produce a huge change in the subject. Also consider the size, the kandra has two spikes, the koloss has 4, but how do the spikes relate in size? Second it depends on the ability of the controlee to resist. Marsh resisted for a second with 22 spikes. The kandra pulled their spikes out due to mental conditioning. The koloss are noted as having a lowered mental capacity, further increasing the amount of control, while a kandra will actively fight. As soon as Vin stopped trying, she lost control over her kandra.
  20. Wax has taken down and potentially killed alot of people, but they're also bad guys so he's saving people as well. Harmony might view him as an agent of both Ruin and Preservation, allowing him to help Wax. Or he just likes Wax. Or both.
  21. The Lord Ruler can compound steel for superspeed and pewter for superstrength. Those two abilities alone make it a pretty one sided fight, unless Szeth has access to unlimited stormlight. Even then, peter mentioned that completely crushing a radiant's head will negate their healing and result in death. So LR for the win (Fullborn are op).
  22. It could depend on how the mandate affects the Shards. Would a shard of passion want to inspire passion, or be passion. I don't think Odium is passion, but his actions could be him consuming their passion for his own. But I like that line about hatred consuming a person hallow.
  23. @Calderis That's one possibility. I lean towards Nature(vague word)->Filter(The vessel's understanding what the Nature, maybe Adon's and the cosmere as a whole as well) ->Expression/Intent (A paragraph defining what the Nature means, what actions are in line, out of line, or against). By this definition, the only way Passion would be the nature of the shard is if Rayse truly believed that hatred is the only true passion. But I doubt that is the case, as he was once friends with Hoid, so I doubt he is the type of person that had only hatred in their lives(not impossible though). I actually think the core concept is Conflict. This would explain why sensual acts would be included, but not love, because one could be considered a hunt and the other is something quite different, but I digress. I also disagree with the Unity idea, but that's more do to a disagreement on what Honor means, which is the crux of the filter idea. I interpret Honor at is most base level to be the keeping of artificial/intelligent rules. I think Unity is a concept to far from Honor to work, as an honorable action may require you to go against others. But now that I think of it, this is an excellent example of the filter theory. The concept of Honor is a good example, because the concept of Honor is a rather fuzzy one that differs from person to person, and someone that believes any dividing action is unhonorable would express the shard different from a person that believed in standing up for an ideal even if it meant conflict with others. @Zellyia Feelings of doubt/guilt interfere with hatred/conflict, which would explain Odium's interest in inflicting those mental states on his followers.
  24. Working with Amaram would be more likely to associate them with the Sons of Honor, who we know little about. But the stormwarden formulas are noted to be available to people outside their numbers, notably Shallan's brother and I think Kal's father as well.
  25. @Ryder That depends on whether they're interrupting the painting via their Super Breath, or just remembering things from the time between death and resurrection.
