Discuss the Stormlight 5 Prologue Here
cometaryorbit replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Hmm. I really didn't like that theory (I was on the "no Herald needed to break, the Everstorm was enough" team). -
I don't think so. Yes, you could do it in stages, but that still wouldn't be enough. There's probably a limit in how finely you can divide time intervals, otherwise you could make black holes even without Compounding (just store your weight for a second and then tap 10^30 times your weight for 10^-30 of a second). Also, there is confirmed to be a diminishing returns aspect to tapping at high multipliers - if you store 50% weight or strength for 5 hours, you don't get 1 hour at 250%, but less time, since some of the stored attribute is used up to 'power' the multiplication. That diminishing returns aspect might even be what prevents the super-high multiplier for super-short time thing as well... maybe there's a point at which the diminishing returns become so great you just can't tap at more than a certain rate (like, once you hit 1000x trying to go to higher rates uses up 100% of the extra energy...)

Khriss says something like this when talking to Kelsier in Secret History, referring to Leras/Preservation's slow death vs. more catastrophic Shard deaths in the past. When Leras actually finally dies, he says that Ruin will Splinter the power, though. So I think Ruin couldn't Splinter Preservation while the Shard was held, even by a 'shadow' like Leras had become, but after Leras' final death he could have if Kelsier hadn't picked it up and it had been left truly 'unattended'. There is a WoB that a Shard left without a Vessel could Splinter on its own (or it could develop its own consciousness, or something else).

I thought "the element" was Hoid's lerasium, and he protects it like his own skin because he ate it and it became part of him, making him a Mistborn? Honor refers to plural Dawnshards, implying they were available in the past but aren't now, so I think at least two must be or once have been on Roshar or in the Rosharan System at least. The inability to do violence or eat meat makes me think that Hoid's/Sigzil's Dawnshard is different from Change. Perhaps something like Protect or Persist, associated with the Shards of Preservation, Mercy, Valor? and maybe Autonomy?
-
Huh. That's an interesting thought. I had kind of thought that it had to do with the 'creativity' connection, in the same way that Dalinar was able to bind Nergaoul since he understood rage. But art as a broader magical thing... we see it on Nalthis too... *hmmm*.

Shard-Dawnshard Classification based on all known info
cometaryorbit replied to Havoc's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Honor has many definitions, but the Shard's Intent is the keeping promises/oaths/bonds one, not virtue or being honored by others. I see Honor as definitely a Bind or Connect Shard. I'd put the hypothetical Wisdom/Prudence Shard under Think instead. I still say Preservation should not be under Change. I'd put it under "Survive", which I might call Protect or Persist instead (Preservation, Valor, Mercy, and maybe Autonomy). That would probably push Odium into Change, which could work if its core intent is really conflict (the power of Odium liking disagreement even if Rayse the Vessel doesn't, in RoW). Making the Change "quadrant" Cultivation (Controlled/directed growth) Ambition (Unrestrained growth???) Ruin (Decay / entropy) Odium (Conflict) -
I am not sure the name itself is conclusive, if Iriali just means the inhabitants of Iri (the land/country) like American or British, then it would be natural for them to use the name once they lived in the land of Iri. But would Hoid then call them Iriali, telling a story about times before they used that name? Probably only if he were talking to a Rosharan... So yeah Lumar probably is post Roshar. But that has big implications on the timeline... ...or maybe it doesn't. This story is supposed to not have major cosmere connections. Perhaps Lumar is *really* isolated, so it can take place after Mistborn Era 4 without spoiler issues, since those events didn't really affect it. Especially if Aethers are non-Shardic, so the question of Adonalsium getting reunited or not doesn't have to be addressed.
-
Do we know for *sure* that the Iriali who are from off-world on Roshar are the same people who inhabited the Silver Kingdom of Iri? (As opposed to taking the name of the land they lived in, kind of like how the inhabitants of modern Britain aren't necessarily the original Celtic Britons - but the name remained. ) Centuries post Stormlight is probably the most natural interpretation of that, but honestly I was thinking we were closer to the end of the cosmere timeline than that... Scadrial now is early 20th century tech, so I was figuring Era 3 would be 70-80 years away and Era 4 a couple centuries after that. But if the Iriali lived on Lumar for a while after Roshar, and left 300 years ago, we must be beyond that. But would there be like a 500-1000 year gap between Era 3 and Era 4 Mistborn?

Brandon's announcement video tomorrow
cometaryorbit replied to Ixthos's topic in General Brandon Discussion
At this rate, it might actually hit 40 million! -
I dont think planet cracking/black hole levels of weight Compounding are achievable, or even anything remotely close to that. Compounding still uses up metal, and I don't think one could practically consume that much metal. That's probably like... eating a Mount Everest sized pile of iron. 50,000 tons moving faster than the speed of sound isn't even *close* to enough to create Shattered Plains level devastation, much less destroy a planet. 50,000 metric tons (50,000,000 kg) at even 1,000 meters per second (about 3 times the speed of sound) is 1/2 mv^2 = 0.5 X 5 x 10^7 X 5 X 10^5 = 1.25 X 10^13 joules. That's much smaller than something like the Meteor Crater, Arizona or Tunguska impacts, and the Shattered Plains are *way* larger than Meteor Crater.

Hmm, now I'm thinking that Create probably shouldn't be one of the Dawnshards. Adonalsium is the Power of Creation, and the Dawnshards together were used to create the cosmere, I think. Maybe something like Imagine/Envision/Think- Bind/Enact - Remain/Be - Change. Used together, they would Imagine or Envision what should be created, Bind or Enact it into reality, and give the creation both persistent reality/stability and the ability to change/develop.

Could we guess the last Shard ?
cometaryorbit replied to Friendshipspren's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There is a WoB that they became more polarized due to Investing in the same planet and/or their conflict. Another WoB says not all Shards are paired. Dawnshard implies that Shards group into quartets instead. -
Given the "Dawnshard, known to bind all creatures voidish or mortal" from WoR epigraphs, I think something at least like Bind or Unite is pretty solidly one of the Dawnshards. Honor would obviously fit that. Devotion and Dominion are probably under that given the emphasis on unity of love vs unity imposed in Elantris' religions... otoh those Shards might have become more paired due to their current state as the Dor than they originally were. Dominion at least would be an Unite/Bind Shard though. Change is Rysn's Dawnshard, which surely includes Ruin and Cultivation. Create also fits well. And then something like Protect or Remain covering Preservation, Valor, Mercy and ??? I feel like that doesn't leave room for a mental/emotional group though.

Could we guess the last Shard ?
cometaryorbit replied to Friendshipspren's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I doubt Invention is the Wisdom/Prudence Shard. I think Invention is a counterpart to Virtuosity, being 'technological' creativity vs 'artistic' creativity. The Prudence one might be more of a counterpart to Honor. Honor is about keeping oaths, but not necessarily with regard to their content/value. I think the Prudence one might be more like judgment of values... perhaps the Intent could be Discernment? -
I don't think Splintering is an ability unique to Odium. (Mistborn: Secret History) So I think any Shard could do it to an "unattended" Shard, if Intent allowed (Preservation, and perhaps Mercy, probably couldn't).

35.5 million... and over 150,000 backers. Wow. -
SP4 - To quote TV Tropes, "Ambition is Evil"
cometaryorbit replied to Ixthos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Odium as primarily the Shard of opposition makes a lot of sense, given the line in RoW about how Rayse didn't like being contradicted but the power of Odium enjoyed it. Also would allow it to be a bit broader than just Hatred (incorporating rage, fear etc.) but not all emotion like Rayse claimed. -
future sight, possibilities, and free will
cometaryorbit replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think anything in the cosmere is long-term predetermined, longer term futuresight always shows branching possibilities. The only oddity is atium's second-or-two single shadow. But even with atium, we don't see exactly what Elend sees with duralumin + atium, but it's pretty clearly from Secret History and WoBs the full Spiritual Realm vision. The Spiritual Realm is kind-of timeless, but it shows branching future possibilities- we see that directly with Kelsier's Fuzz-assisted vision in Secret History, and Honor says so in Dalinar's visions. So no predetermination there. Adonalsium totally could have set up a long term plan, but I think that would work more on the same mechanisms as Preservation's plan in Mistborn. -
Same here, I think. All it really gives away for Stormlgiht 5 is that Sigzil doesn't die in it. This seems to be set far enough in the future that the implied events in his past (some kind of maybe partial oath breaking, holding a Dawnshard, saving Hoid/Wit from something) could be post Stormlight 10.
-
I am pretty sure Hoid's immortality is a side effect of being a former Dawnshard, like his inability to do harm (to the living) or eat meat.

Are Renarin’s fits autistic meltdowns?
cometaryorbit replied to Vin(Diesel)'s topic in Stormlight Archive
I think it was epilepsy too. What gets healed vs not is super weird imo. I can see depression counting as a core part of the self (even if I would totally want my own brain-chemistry-imbalance issues healed and wouldn't see myself as "less myself" for not having them), but Teft's addiction didn't get healed either, and surely that's damage acquired during life?- 24 replies

Sure. I just mean that some of them are not totally obvious from the name alone. Honor has several different meanings, and if we just had the name and not the Stormlight series I don't think we could be certain that it is the "keeping your word/oath you yourself have sworn" version vs the "acting so that one is 'honored' by others" or "following a broader socially imposed code" version. Something like Preservation is more straightforward -- things stay the same/are protected from change. And I think Whimsy is at least as open to interpretation as Honor. In general, I think the more emotional/personal shards like Honor and Devotion have more room for that than the more natural-principle shards like Ruin and Preservation.

Questions for Secret Project #3 Spoiler Stream

Where are the Spoiler stream videos? I see the project reveals on Brandon's website, but not these. -
future sight, possibilities, and free will
cometaryorbit replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's still information indirectly gained from future sight, through Vin watching Zane react to atium-gained information. I'm more wondering how atium can predict whether you'll dodge left or right if you haven't seen the attack coming yet and so haven't decided yet. Is the idea that quasi-reflexive "decisions" are basically subconsciously determined in a way fully willful ones aren't? (Which might make RL sense, actually.) -
