  1. WOW! I would have to say that to make the statement above, you would have to stretch credulity beyond it's former breaking point. I see no parallels at all, except that they are oaths and breaking them have natural consequences. The details of those covenants do not align with Radiant orders. They are sacred to us and therefore we do not discuss them publicly, but they do not follow the Radiant oaths at all.
  2. In the original post there are several incorrect statements about how the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints understand the Godhead, and how kingdoms are governed, and a couple other misstatements. I am a lifelong member, and have studied our theology and other religions theology extensively, -and have taught ours extensively. It really appears that there was an intent of the original poster to make a discussion about those things by trolling them and then tying them very loosely to Brandon's writings. Brandon has clearly said he does not match any of his writings to his theological views. He admits he may be influenced by them. But there is no correlation as described by the OP. I don't know what the goal was, but sowing misinformation to start is a rotten way to get a discussion. I hope that wasn't the goal. I appreciate the way the community here has responded, as fans of the books. It is both kind and professional, but I did not want to have the OP statements taken at face value about our beliefs. You can go to several of many official sites, and have those subjects of our beliefs correctly explained..
  3. A series of thoughts that will lead you to the beginning of a theory I have been pondering: 1. The reflexive symmetry of the Voidbinding chart would work well showing a Surgebinding power, and a counter power (up to interpretation at this point). 2. If Voidbinding is a "cousin" of the Old Magic, and the old magic has a boon/bane reflexive symmetry, that would make sense. 3. If the Old Magic was old because it was prior to Cultivation and Honor's arrival, the system would be the most likely one Odium could corrupt to his purpose. If the Old Magic is related to Cultivation (and there is a strong argument for that), then corrupting both Cultivation and Honors' magic systems to be it's own unique would also make sense. Do the Listeners have different surges than the humans because the Humans have a newer, different reflective symmetry to their surges? Was Voidbinding originally the Surges they used until Honor and Ishar forced a new order on them? (That last one was a new thought to me, but not a well fleshed out one). Perhaps we look at the current chart as the uncorrupted one, and Voidbinding chart as corrupted, but we are wrong. Someone should as Brandon which came first, Surgebinding or Voidbinding. It would add additional insight to this.
  4. NOT beloved children. Lies. Used to turn people to his side. Old Listeners get the same story. How they want to see a god, but not what he is. It is a scam.
  5. In the interlude with the smoke Soulcaster (Kaza), the approach to the ancient Amian island and its city -that was previously known to Radiants (Akinah)- was protected by a large storm. It was there more than once, as the Captain had told the crew about it, and that it would end. It had a definite end when they approached the barriers. My thoughts include these: 1. There is no way the Stormfather does not know about this storm protecting Akinah. He may be more than silent about it, he may be very complicit in the mission. I suspect he could give Dalinar in incredible amount of information if asked directly. Not that he would...How was the old history of the Knights and Amians interconnected, (as the visiones showed they fought together), and how is the danger to "Worlds" not just Roshar? 2. Why would the storm stop in stead of driving ships into the barrier? Was this too good a writing dramatic moment for the soulcaster, or are you supposed to be able to pass into it when you passed the storm. 3. Amains must be in many ports and places to catch all the ships headed that direction. Are the specialized cremlings from this one trapped on the island? How do they ever get off again? 4. What the heck are they hiding? Old soulcasters came from here, and they work differently than the new ones. Some only do one element instead of all of them. Huge gemhearts abound, but the real secrets seem to lie in the city (referenced in the Urithiru archives and containing partially explored caverns UNDERNEATH them. Is that under water and a hint about Windrunner pressure bubbles?
  6. Would love to get a Lapel Pin, classy and wearable to replace my button style pin.
  7. @MistLord, there were several references to the book in flashbacks and rereads that showed what the words of the book represented to Dalinar. He was not using the book as a weapon (as evidenced by the quick destruction of it by Odium), but because of the meaning, value and inspiration it was to him. The books physical presence was there to enhance his resolve, and Odium understood that. It represented what he learned about getting up and taking the next step, the most important words a man can say, (as his brother told him to find), and his feelings of connection to Gavilar and the Stormfather and Honor were symbolized by the presence of the book. I am strongly religious, but oddly, the symbol I would take into the crisis is a blade. It took me decades to make and represents many things to me now. If I saw someone else bring one, I would judge them as a foolish showman. This one blade is different and does not represent the ability to destroy to me. So I think it is with Dalinar and his book.
  8. Please all, remember that each of the Silver Kingdomsand/or Dawncities has a patron Herald. The strengths of these heralds have been cultivated throughout the years to a skill set and penchant for greatness in that area. There should be a correlation between kingdoms/Dawncities, heralds and general superiority of skills. To me this was evident in several examples. Alethela- Taln- Warfare Karbranth/Palanium- Pailiah- Learning and Knowledge etc. There are many examples throughout the books of these connections to almost all the oathgate cities/ Silver Kingdoms. Look for Theylena and trade and stonework, The Pure Lake (Sela Tales), Ral Elorim, Sesamalex Dar in Tukar, and a few other softer references to cultural skills and cities. Amia and Shinovar are the most mysterious, but Natanatan and exploration and Reshi and their lifestyles suggest certain heralds as well.
  9. You would be one of many who think so. It seems appropriate timewise and by other WOBs.
  10. PG-13 for most of the Cosmere books.
  11. A wall, soaring mighty and stout- "Why is it here?" she would shout. "It just is", they all said. She, with face and scarf red, Learned it wasn't to keep monsters OUT!
  12. Wedding Pictures... (UUUghhhh!) I hate posed pictures, but I love impromptu shots capturing happiness. Less pictures, less posing, less touch-up, more LIVING! If you ask me to smile, I look terrible in pictures, if you catch me smiling, you might feel I was a guy you could get along with. Catch me living! @MiSyl-To your point about the quote, it is not just living in the moment. There is a very important "ensuring one's life would produce many future moments to anticipate". Live in such a way that your actions will bring more happiness later, not regret. Don't trade happiness now for misery later. PLAN and then you get one of life's best rewards... ANTICIPATION!
  13. I vote the same ear for the opposite reason. Her Mother pierced her ear and would have a hard time reaching across the child to pierce the right ear (forcing the head to the extreme side). If the mother was right handed, and statistically, she likely was, the child was almost certainly pierced in the left ear. There; decisive fact exposed
  14. These books are too good and to detailed to miss anything due to impairment.
  15. Very good logic. I agree with all of the conclusions except perhaps the 1st generation Kandra being full Feruchemists. Where did that assumption come from I did not read that in their histories.
  16. When you get over 45 you will see that longer eyebrows are NOT evolutionary, but a matter of aging. If I let them, mine would be over 4 inches long today. Gandalf and Tolkien, have got nothing on me! I could get seriously beastie if I let it go. Just a slight keratin increase could make growing eyebrows easier than you all seem to think. Ask barbers in the area, they trim some MIGHTY Long eyebrows on men in their old age.
  17. "I will ere on the side of charity"- first voiced by a Bishop I worked with in Alaska, proven good advice for 20 years. "I will not take offense, particularly when it IS intended"- Has kept me out of more trouble than you would believe. "I will prepare myself, my mind, and my resources for situations others do not"- I have spent a great deal of time and money preparing for things other people didn't think they could do anything about. If you don't prepare, that will almost always be true. This usually comes in the form of education or practice (I'm not a "prepper" or an apocalyptic bunker dweller). "I will not look for trouble"- You seem to bring the doom you seek. "I will trust first, and not regret the times I shouldn't have"- it is a better world assuming good in others. Period.
  18. How do you know we do not use dipthongs in private? Some of us are a little shy showing off our dipthongs publicly, but are quite comfortable using them at home.
  19. ...was this Adonalsium's purpose in letting himself be splintered?
  20. Big question, bigger answer. I suggest you look and the Coppermind first. It can answer names and places best. Nicknames are somewhat fun, but off putting for those not in the joke. I agree that long hand works best for communication. Another more in-depth source is the new data base of the Words of Brandon (WoB) at all the events. You can search words and topics there to get definitive answers. Finally, direct questions get the best results on the forums. Ask them. People here are nice and remember when it was all new to them. Trust them with your questions and they are very patient and helpful with direct ones. The rest will likely require some research in the two sources I mentioned. They were painstakingly crafted for just such questions. Welcome to the Shard. Good luck. Journey Before Destination.
  21. I have always wondered if his goal in not so much to study, but to quantify. If he takes measurements and notes, does that bind each spren he studies? Can he limit their capacity in some way if he takes tatooed notes? Is this an attack and not an academic interest. Seems to me Amians have an ax to grind according to the coversheets about who used to have the surges... I could be wrong.
  22. She always puts her left shoe on before her right, and though it seems obviously backwards, she places her safehand in the sleeve BEFORE her other hand. This has to do with buttons and modesty. She loves reading, but not for pleasure; she loves the academic reparte' she has with the author and her/his approach to reason. Her favorite alcohol is NOT Horneater white, but a deep violet wine with fruity flavors added. She is an exceptionally difficult date and even worse when given too broad a choice for dinner selections, as she argues with herself and the date for inordinate amounts of time the pros and cons of the selection, often hoping to use this to draw out the personality of her date, but usually putting the dinner party in a poor mood prior to getting some food. Following battles in Thaylen City, she looks particularly "wrung out" and markedly unattractive. If you are a merchant who happens to do business with her, you usually walk away with a better deal than ever you have had, since her naivete and impatience always works in your favor. She loves lime sherbet, and is a sucker for any play that comes to town. She has no idea the value of aluminum and highly underestimates soulcasting. Not a good choice for caregiver of people of any age, and is now fully on the radar of Odium as a vulnerable foe. Don't ask me how I know these things, the answer is many times longer than this post, and is partially fiction. (actually...all of it is! Hmmm... Can a man's definition of fiction have levels?)
  23. Hello, and Welcome to the Shard! Have an upvote for friendly relations, and a well thought out first post. In the Way of Kings, the letter to and from Frost contained a section that stated that Rayse had " ... the Power of God's own hatred, without the context the other Intents gives it." (very close to that quote). Of all persons who would have knowledge of how the splintering of Adonalsium happened, I think Frost and Hoid are very believable sources. How is this passion? Frost could be mistaken about the Intent, because the personal context of the individuals who did the shattering determined how it broke. That could possibly mean that the Intent looked like Hatred to the other shards, and in reality might include more. But it seems to me that they would recognize passion in themselves, and thus be better judges than we of Rayse's remaining Intent. However, I don't have a reason to disbelieve Odium either, except for his desire to conquer the ones he was talking to. Maybe deceit is not needed when you are a Shard. Ruin didn't seem to hide his purposes. I think we need more information on Odium's end goal on Roshar to decide if we want to believe him or not.
  24. Thanks for using the word guess in your question, because that's all we can do on this topic. If odium really wants to diffuse the power of shards, he needs to have as much of his power consolidated to take on other shards (balance of power thing). That means that with some of his power in the unmade, the listeners, and anywhere else his investiture is being used, he will likely be that much less available for a face to face confrontation. Cultivation plans long and well. She is likely to be a gardener, and not invest in her creations as much as she allows them to grow with guidance (See Intent of Cultivation). I think she in not nearly as invested as Honor was, almost by definition, therefor Rayse fears her in a direct confrontation. He probably also fears her machinations while he has been so long in her planet system. I think Rayse fears and envies Cultivation, but I would need more backstory to infer more.
  25. Since when were these two mutually exclusive? Some blessed madnesses have created the greatest things in our world...
