Ditto, as a martial artist with a decade of training to fight with weapons other than my own body, Plate is infinitely more appealing, especially in the context of Roshar and fighting there. Near impervious armour that strengthens you to the point you can make ten feet vertical leaps and survive forty foot drops with near impunity? And allows one of your punches to toss a muscled human a good ten feet backwards? If you're confident and quick enough, and the armour not too restrictive/bulky to flexibility, a martial artist could turn themselves into the equivalent of a shardhammer, leaping a chasm and laying into enemies for a few minutes before making a tactical retreat, hit and run style over Chasms to avoid getting surrounded and pulled down. Of course redirection of blows would help preserve the armour somewhat, since Alethi Shardbearers from what we've seen are trained mainly in fighting with their swords, using the imperviousness of the Plate as essentially a full body sheild, taking hits on it that leave it cracked in order to trade a blow that takes out a whole group of attackers. So a martial art with a lot of redirection of blows like Jiu-Jutsu rather than a more block-happy one like Karate would also be a plus. With a Blade, as Vasher says, a sword is better in some situations, worse in others, and if someone knows what they're doing in fighting a sword bare handed, the (usual) single edge of the Blade and the sheer size of it would make it a liability if someone was able to dodge a swing and get inside of the reach. A Sprenblade, on the other hand, opens up a whole nother set of possibilities and would be by FAR preferable to either alternative if it could change forms. We've seen it can make spears, staffs, hammers, halberds, swords and shields in near enough any size and shape, and that is an absolute dream for a martial artist, since it helps with the inherant limitations of a specific weapon. An indestructable staff that can block Shardblades would be an absolute godsend for someone with my own training, hehe. So yeah, it basically depends on your own skills, and if you like fighting with a weapon more than your fists. I can use a plethora of different weapons, but my favourite one is my own body, so unless I had a weapon that can become any other weapon, something that enhances the most versatile one in my arsenal is definitely the one I'd pick. ^-^

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
ScarletSabre replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is one that's probably been asked before, but.... Would two Drabs having a child while without any Breaths affect the strength of the Breath of the baby? I doubt they would have a Drab baby, considering the Breath comes from Endowment, but I'm curious if it would have any effect. -
@randuir Haha, probably, I was just thinking of new ways for a Slider like Wayne to fight, and how the mechanics of an attack like that would work ^^
-
That's why my original idea was to have the stick be a spear or sword, just something with an edge at the end. If you can move with relative blinding speed and see your foe moving in slow motion, a swipe across the neck with a spear etc when they're in range should be pretty exploitable as an instakill.
-
This... this still bugs me with my question on swinging something out of a bubble. If I'm in a speedbubble, holding a stick so it's half out of the bubble, and swing it, what this implies is that one of two things will happen... A - The stick views itself as being inside the bubble, and will move with the relative blurring speed as the Slider inside. or B - The stick views itself as being outside of the bubble, and will move with the same slowness as those outside, no matter how hard the Slider tries to force it to move faster.

What is Rall Elorim?
ScarletSabre replied to Ted aka WinespringBrother's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm still curious about that too, especially given that we see when Shallan is in Shadesmar and the lights of life in the PR start to wink out, there's no Cognitive Shadows popping into existence around her.... Still such a pity Brandon has said explicitly that he's not gonna mention anything about Roshar's afterlife for a long while -3- -

Also don't forget, as far as we know and speculate he's And Kel has learned from Fuzz and his time in Secret History how dangerous secrets and powers like this can be. I'd imagine he doesn't want unscrupulous people *coughcoughThe Setcough* finding out that it's possible to do the kind of things he has and start harvesting people with spikes to experiment. It would probably remind him quite a bit of that nobleman's laboratory in The Eleventh Metal, for a start.... -
So, with the revelation from one of the new signings here that.... My mind has instantly raced, and something clicked, to let me come up with this quick little mini-theory about something we've been curious about for a while. Why Harmony hasn't done more to help the Southern Scadrians? He created the Basin for the North, but essentially left the South to freeze, and aside from - BOM spoilers has seemed to not do much for them in terms of development, from what we've seen. I could get into all kinds of rambling about Ruin and Preservation, that he's preserving the North while letting the South fall to ruin, him protecting Scadrial from the Red Haze, etc, but my current thought and random speculation is this. Harmony has been unable to actively help or influence the Southern Scadrians as much as the Nothern ones.... because he's been in the process of Investing his power in the South. The Well of Ascension was in the North, and we've seen that the Pits of Hathsin don't have any Atium, and therefore Ruin's Investiture/power in them. We've had WOBs before about the existence of Harmonium and Harmony's Shardpool, and I believe that if Sazed was actively trying to imbue his power into the South, or at least more south than the North to balance the distribution of it, he would be unable to overtly take action aside from sending the help I mentioned above. This would explain the abundance of Ettmetal, Harmonium, in the South, and why there's none of it in the North, because Harmony was already Connected/Invested there and helped them as much as he could with the Basin and books, and then moved his power to begin Investing/Connecting with the South to be able to help them. This naturally creates his Godmetal there. Thoughts? This is just a quick, off the top of my head connecting of dots so far.

[Theory] The Highstorm is a mobile Perpendicularity
ScarletSabre replied to Yata's topic in Cosmere Discussion
To be fair, I think that being in different locations is kind of the definition of "mobile" XD But yeah, we need more confirmation on that. I think it's definitely an indication that mobile Perpendicularities are possible though!- 32 replies

[Theory] The Highstorm is a mobile Perpendicularity
ScarletSabre replied to Yata's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Actually, while we have never seen one, Khriss references what seem to be mobile, or at least sometimes non-existant Perpendicularities in Arcanum Unbound, in her essay on the Threnody system. The difficulty implies to me that the Perpendicularities are mobile, or perhaps sentient and therefore can only be accessed when their physical forms are awake etc.- 32 replies

Creatures affected by emotional allomancy
ScarletSabre replied to emailanimal's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would wonder about, since Windspren seem to have some level of sapience, given that they generally have a tendency oto play pranks and giggle. I wonder if they have the emotional range/capacity due to this level to be able to be affected by Rioting and Soothing... I'd say a more accurate (at least until we know more for sure) answer would be that personified Spren can be affected, but ones that don't seem to have any sapience, like Gloryspren or Intoxicationspren, can't be. Side note.... Would Emotional Allomancy DRAW the associated Spren? If you used Rioting to bring out someone's terror, would that draw Fearspren?- 11 replies

[Edgedancer Spoilers] Size Limitations
ScarletSabre replied to VoltCruelerz's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wouldn't a giant caltrop-style spiked Spren-cannonball be better? Hurl it from a catapult/trebuchet and have it plow through people. We've seen that the blades of Sprenblades and Shardblades can be over six feet long, so a few two foot long spikes on a ball shouldn't be too much trouble, and pierce straight through everyone on the battlefield without a boulder or Horneater to hide behind like a shield. -
Creatures affected by emotional allomancy
ScarletSabre replied to emailanimal's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm glad someone finally asked those questions, I posed them in the questions thread ages ago XD I'm still disappointed it got RAFO'd twice in the latest signings, but I think it's because being affected, and reacting, are two different things. It's the difference to a Spren like Syl being able to sense the effect of one of Rashek's Soothing Stations as she passes by, and being affected on a level similar to that of a Kandra by a Soother/Rioter. As sentient Investiture, I wonder if the same kind of control granted by Hemalurgy could be given to a sufficiently boosted/powerful Soother/Rioter... If it turns out that Spren can be affected by emotional Allomancy, I imagine (and theorise) that a Mistborn, or at least a Soother/Rioter boosted by Nicrosil, would be able to destabilise a Sprenblade (And possibly Shardplate if it's made of lesser Spren as the current prevailing theory states) through intense Emotional Allomancy. I wonder if Nightblood could be effected by Soothing and Rioting... Since he consumes Investiture, would she just "eat" the Allomantic pulses without being affected? If Spren CAN be affected, it also raises the question of if Emotional Allomancy effects living beings by causing their brains to pump hormones/chemicals through their systems, which is why Aluminuim over the head can block it, or if something without a Physical Form can be affected, implying it works on the Cognitive Realm...- 11 replies

Spoilers for AU reveals! -
I actually didn't think it was Hoid at first... he seemed too... subdued for Hoid. I've noticed that Hoid's cameos tend to have him, at least to me, speaking a bit more actively, with a more chipper tone of voice, only slipping into solemnity when big topics come up, like when he waxes to the six legged crab thing in WoR, and doesn't have to put on a facade of indifference, or when he speaks genuinely to Shallan inher flashbacks. I dunno, Hoid just seems to be very... animated, jovial and enthusiastic and chipper in his diguises, like when he's Wit. The only exceptions I can really think of are when he explains Nathalis' history for Siri, and his original beggar disguise with Kelsier.
-
So it's time once again to grab your aluminium lined bowler hats, for some random speculation off the top of my head, that has literally just occured to me! My current random thought is on our ever present cameo maker, Hoid. We don't know much about his backstory outside of the now (at least mostly) non-canon Liar of Partinel chapters, and WOBs have been few and far between, but from a few of them, I've pieced together a slight idea about Hoid's magic system, or at least one of them. SO. Spoilers ahead for here and there, for WOBs and Secret History at least! Read at your own peril, you rusting airsick lowlanders! (Sources for my points below will either be coming when I'm more free from work, or if you kind Sharders add them with your speculation and additions to my thoughts ^-^) We know that Hoid cannot harm living people, but can apparently beat up Cognitive Shadows, as of Secret History at least. Hoid also knows how to stop pain and damage from physical blows from harming him in the Cognitive Realm, again from Secret History. We know that Hoid has a form of Feruchemy, via WOB. We know that "What Hoid does heals the soul", via WOB. We know Hoid has Lerasium, a Godmetal that can change someone's Spirit Web, and may have used it for a purpose that we don't know of yet, to make a change we haven't seen in the Cosmere so far. We know via WOB that Hoid has time dialation techniques for moving forwards in time, possibly to permit travel between planets avoiding the Cognitive Realm (Which would explain him getting on and off of Sel with the Dor making it so storming difficult in the CR) We know that in the Spiritual Realm, all things are connected, and there are idealised versions of everything, an ideal concept of Fire, and time and space don't apply to the Spiritual Realm, despite it not being the Beyond. We know from recent WOBs - Here We know that Lift exists partly in the Cognitive Realm, moreso than most humans are, enabling all sorts of things for her, (like perhaps her cognition of her age affecting her physical age, but that's a theory for another ramblepost....) mainly her absorption and metabolism of Stormlight. This all leads me to believe that Hoid has a form of magic that can affect the Spiritual Realm, either drawing power from, or connecting directly to, the Spiritual Realm. Hoid is immortal, ageless, as defined by Brandon's tiers of immortality within the Cosmere, and from what we know about Lift, I suspect that Hoid may be able to pull himself partially into the Spiritual Realm, and exist mostly there. The idealised self there wouldn't age as time doesn't exist in the SR, and we can see that TLR's age trick using Feruchemy wouldn't work because of the overriding Spiritual age forcing itself onto his Physical body. Thi may also account for him being unable to hurt Physical, living beings, since the Spiritual Realm is filled with idealised versions and true selves of everything, so I can't imagine that someone in the SR would be able to actually do something negative to harm the Physical form of someone in the PR. If Hoid could manipulate the SR, at least for himself, he could also change the ideal version of himself there, perhaps through an overwriting method like Forging, and change his appearance more than just Lightweaving (Both KR and Yolish) and age-manipulating Feruchimey could, explaining his various disguises, and how he could change his height to be short when he first met Kelsier in The Final Empire. Considering Hoid's longevity lasting from before the Shattering and long after, I can't imagine that he gained my proposed SR Magic from Lerasium, but I suspect it could enhance it somehow, considering it's a Godmetal that can affect Spiritwebs after all. Sooooooo, thoughts? Additions? Rebukes? This is based almost entirely on the SR containing ideal versions of each individual human, rather than one for Rosharans, Scadrians, etc, but I think that that would be the case, especially considering the different races on each planet, and the fact everyone and everything exists on all three Realms, rather than just the ideal versions in the SR.

My only issue with that is Brandon's constant insistence and focus on Stormlight being a standalone epic as well as part of the Cosmere. I doubt he'd have the current big threat secretly powered by a magic system from elsewhere in the Cosmere... And curses! Twice RAFO'd on spren being affected by emotional allomancy.... there goes like three theories on fighting Surgebinders until we know more TT^TT -
Depending on the timeline and setting of Dark One, I'm wondering if Ambition relocates to the world it's set on, and is involved in the story. Becoming the prophesied evil destroyer sounds like something a warped, injured Ambition would have a hand in....
