  1. So you want a Type IV entity which understands what it means to be human more. Interesting. So first, I think Nightblood can remember that Shashara is dead, it just can't accept it as part of reality. In the annotations of Warbreaker, Brandon has stated that Nightblood has an intense recollection of the moment around its creation, to the point where anything which contradicts that reality cannot be accepted by Nightblood as real. This includes Shashara being dead and Denth being a non-friend. So hemalurgic spikes probably wouldn't change anything, as its inability to accept a reality where Shashara is dead is simply by nature beyond it. This passage from Chapter 29 shows it fairly well. Anyhow, back to the main point. I think sapience is in fact what should be improved in Nightblood. It has all the other needed cognitive qualities, but what it lacks is the ability to intelligently conceive, which is a fair part of sapience. The main issue I'm seeing about the idea of using hemalurgy to add the necessary cognitive to a Type IV entity is interference between the investitures. Yes, you want to deliberately drain the spikes of their hemalurgic charge, but at some point the spikes will be so drained that they won't produce an effect. At the same time, I'm thinking that enough charge to produce an effect will interfere with the awakening process, and limit the resulting power of the awakened object.
  2. Yeah, no problem. Like I said, I found it amusing that you guys would mention me for that reason, but since I know I do post nitpicks fairly often, it's not a problem. Paragraph 3 was something I thought about as a progression after completing paragraph 2. I mean, most of my posts are made up as I go, so nothing new there. However, as I said, my feelings are that Vasher made Nightblood primarily as a mimic of sprenblades. Whether the sentience was an unknown side effect or something they knew about and decided would be necessary for the process, I'm not sure about. I vaguely recall him thinking about the creation process of Nightblood a bit, but I don't have time to pull the passage so I could be wrong here.
  3. .... Thanks @Djarskublar and @The One Who Connects, you really make a guy feel like he posts nothing more than criticism. (Which isn't necessarily wrong of course or nothing, nor hurtful in any manner, just slightly amusing.) Anywho... my main nitpick is as The One Who Connects said, in that as far as we've been told, as far as we've seen, Type IV entities are simply defined as being sentient, not necessarily awakened steel or stone. 1000 breaths is definitely mutable in my opinion. I'm sure someone could create a Type IV entity that using less than 1000 breaths, since you probably wouldn't need to make it into a shardblade-class object to make it sentient. As such, a lesser effect while still providing sentience is more than likely possible, while in the same vein, a greater effect with sentient my be possible, though I feel that Nightblood is probably pushing the limits of awakening. Regarding the main topic. My main questions is, what do you mean when you say "more human Type IV entities"? In your first method, you talked about using hemalurgic spikes charges with the various human attributes. By this, I'm assuming you're talking about the attributes such as strength, senses, emotional stability and fortitude, intelligence and memory, along with other unknown ones. However, if we consider Nightblood, the only Type IV entity seen so far, it more or less has them already, at least the cognitive ones. It's got memory and intelligence, sense, and some sort of emotions. So I guess then what you mean is that you want to elevate the innate investiture of those specific attributes so they're more similar to the average amount in humans. Assuming of course it is a lesser amount, which is a fair assumption. So overall, the theory seems to be about methods raising the innate investiture of a Type IV entities to improve its cognitive, so it's more sapient. So once we've established that, the next question is somewhat, why would you be unable to manipulate the amounts through normal awakening? We already know it's possible to do so, since I'm assuming that's how Nightblood is sentient and somewhat sapient, by using some of the breath within it to generate a more refined cognitive aspect. I imagine it would be possible to allow for a greater amount of cognitive aspects, assuming you're willing to provide a bit more breath and probably lower the strength, by potentially not making it a shardblade-class object. As far as I can tell, the main reason why Nightblood has a low cognitive despite being sapient, which means it effectively higher than a lot of things, is because a lot of its investiture is being directed towards its weapon functions, which we see most directly when its drawn and it loses most of its personality. ... Anyhow, things to do now so I'll address the actual theorized methods later on. This should be enough to discuss for now. Edit: I saw that upvote you sneaky son of a chull. Edit 2: 2 people need better things to do than read my post and upvote them in less than 20 minutes after I post. (Hey, maybe I'll add an edit for every upvote.)
  4. And they said 18 was too difficult. Also, I should point out that Hippiemancy isn't a branch of magic. It's the collective group for Flower Power, Date-a-mancy, and Rhyme-o-mancy, I think. But you have 18 besdies that, so all good. Discord, Skype, Whatsapp, IRC, Raidcall WLIU: From the web serial Worm by Wildbow, name 12 characters who were part of Slaughterhouse 9 at some point, during the narrative or before it.
  5. So by this you mean that you think it is possible for aluminum feruchemy medallions to be made, unlike as the OP has theorized?
  6. True. I'll drop it down.
  7. This WoB sums up the general mechanics fairly well. Don't forget though that two of the other nine blades would give him a surgebinding ability he already possesses, so only seven would give him a third and fourth surgebinding ability. Also, honorblades cannot "refuse" anything. I'm fairly sure they are non-sapient, and even non-sentient.
  8. None of this says anything about whether he has actual realmatic knowledge, which was my point. Yes he knew about investiture, which is significant and I can't explain it, but still extremely slight. The fact that he knows about the Nahel Bond and the Parshendi forms of power isn't that amazing, it was known in the past and scraps of knowledge have likely persisted and been found in his library. Jasnah after searching figured they held power and he has had longer. In any case, the "bridge" is probably the Everstorm which would bring about the True Desolation. Whether he referring to Wit is unknown. Also, not too impressive, though fairly. If he did analytically predict the specific actions that could push Jah Keved, it's not untowards that he could've spotted the deviations in the mob mentality over the last few years and figured that there was someone acting with some sort of higher knowledge and guessed he was from another world potentially. However, if he did follow stories and deviations, then chances are that the theory that the wanderer is Mraize may be more likely, as I don't think Hoid has been on Roshar for long enough. In any case, since it appears we're all agreed on splinters being sentient and self-aware, but not necessarily intelligent, lets move the topic back towards the actual point of this topic, the Unmade. If you want to discuss the facets of the Diagram, as you seem to be, please make another topic.
  9. Yes, this is somewhat correct. Splinters are sentient, in that they are self-aware, in that they can react to their environment, even if they cannot all create a logical understanding of their surrounding as some, like Syl, can. Form what I understand, your block is the thought that intelligence is required for self-awareness and sentience, which is not the case. Sentience is just the capacity to be aware of your environment, and to react to it, like a cat going inside when it starts raining. Sapience is the state of being intelligence enough to form logical connections and, likely explicit conclusions. Also, I never called them intelligent, so I'm not sure why you're bringing up that point at the end. Last thought. Taravangian's opinion does not make for a good argument I think. I doubt his knowledge of realmatics is anywhere near profound, and I don't think he is even aware of the actual existence of shards and splinters. He just thinks the Unmade are more powerful spren than normal, not that they represent an extension of something greater than that. Also, his actual opinion on them is based from guesswork.
  10. 1. Oak 2. Cypress 3. Pine 4. Cedar 5. Maple 6. Spruce 7. Larch 8. Cherry 9. Coconut 10. Palm 11. Banana 12. Willow Not that hard since the streets near my house are named after trees. From the web series Erfworld, name 10 different branches of magic in Erfworld.
  11. Which is precisely the problem, because they may not know, so for all those who do not know, you could be spoiling the plot, which is why you use spoilers.
  12. I mean, you won because no one answered that question within 24 hours, so you post another question.
  13. Looks like @Slowswift wins. Guess we get a new question?
  14. [SA and Elantris spoilers] Also, please remember to spoiler when discussing another series in a series-specific subforum.
  15. This is incorrect. It has been defined for us by Brandon that in-Cosmere, splinters are pieces of Adonalsium's power which have achieved sentience or self-awareness. While it is true that splinters are bound by an intent as well, they do have to have a sentience which is by all accounts, independent of a human cognitive or other shardic influence. Relevant WoBs: [Intent], [Self-Awareness]
  16. It could be because of a shift in mentality. If the Stormfather was one of the spren who bonded to create Bondsmiths in the past, he may be unwilling to led the power necessary to form the shardblade or shardplates now, perhaps because doing so would cause greater damage if Dalinar betrayed his oath, damage that the Stormfather is trying to avoid taking again. Also, it could just be that the Stormfather is weaker at this point and is unwilling to weaken himself further by lending out his power. @Thinky Think cometaryorbit is not referring to Dalinar giving his shardplate away to Renarin, he's referring to when the Stormfather directly said to him that he would not be able to have a shardblade or shardplate. The fact that he won't be able to receive either of those as a part of being a KR is not because of his political choices, but because the spren he is bonded to is refusing to give him access to them.
  17. If I understand it correctly, investiture is like energy. Energy comes in different like themal, kinetic, etc. Investiture is the same. It comes in different forms but it's all essentially the same, no matter where it is from. As such, I don't think the form of the investiture would affect Nightblood.
  18. I find it quite amusing that an answer I came up with in 5 minutes is so well agreed with. In spirit of continuing the discussion though, I came up with another question regarding emotional allomancy. We've seen cases where emotional allomancy is targeted, where the soother or rioter is using their power on one or more people. Example include times such as when Breeze first meets Vin, or when Allrianne seduced Breeze. At the same time, we've seen cases where emotional allomancy is used in an area of effect, such as when TLR dampened the crowd during the executions, or when Breeze and his team were getting skaa to join the rebellion, as I'm assuming that they weren't targeting each one specifically. My question though, is where is the limit between complete non-targeted area of effect emotional allomancy and specific targeted individual emotional allomancy? For instance. Would it be possible to create an area of effect soothing which only targets individuals matching a set of criteria?
  19. Interesting chart. Just like to point out something. The feruchemical quadrant for Cadmium, Bendalloy, Gold and Electrum is called the hybrid quadrant, and is composed of metals which give fairly physical abilities, with the exception of electrum which moreso stores cognitively.
  20. Don't forget though that just because you can burn it, doesn't mean it won't be harmful. Alloy ratios that are too skewed from the allomantic alloy value can cause sickness and possible death. In WoA when Vin was trying to find a usable of alloy of aluminum, the incorrect alloys were making her sick, and IIRC, weren't yielding any noticeable effect other than the physical harm.
  21. My guess is that controlling which emotion to push or pull is done by cognitive translation of the soother's or rioter's intent. So the allomancer has the intent to push or pull and thinks of the emotion, and the investiture translate that intent into a specific effect on the intended emotion. So Breeze thinks about pushing on anger and the allomancy understands his intent cognitively and applies the investiture to cause the necessary mental changes on his target. This mainly stemming from the fact that from what we've seen of rioters and soothers, such as Vin, all they do is think about how they want to change them emotionally and the changes happen. The skill that Breeze has with soothing is due to lots of trial and error, pushing with specific strength and noting the effect, continually refining reading people and knowing how to more subtly affect. The actual vectors of the soothing and rioting are a lot more unclear. I'm guessing it probably has to do with just applying the specific electrical charges to the correct regions of the brain. These electrical impulses would trigger the release of relevant chemicals which normally occurs when the specific emotions are normally felt.
  22. It is supposed that the Divine Breaths are self-aware, hence why they are defined as splinters, and that it is in fact largely their cognitive and spiritual which are manifested in Returned.
  23. But then there was probably a reason why Jasnah started killing ghostbloods, so that would probably tie into their grey area actions.
  24. Don't forget that it seems Helaran was a Ghostblood before he sought the Skybreakers. At least, Amaram thought so and Mraize knew of him as well. The ghostbloods did kill Jasnah, so where exactly they are aligned is still a fairly grey area.
  25. No no no no no. You have to play the punishment game. Then we move on with your question. Also, Hasbro doesn't make video games.
