Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I wish I had time to do this the subtle way. Unfortunately I've had a busy evening and need to be up in about 8 and a half hours for an internship interview, so brute force it is. I'm the knight. I'd also like to point out that there's 8 players left alive. If all three of the original roles claim, that leaves a group of 5 people that contains both Sophie and the convert. Depending on who ends up claiming, this might narrow things down even more, allowing for the game to be solved. I'm not sure if a mass claim is a good idea at this point, but I do think it needs to be considered.- 268 replies

I don't think it's Devotary, though the reason is a bit IKYK. Most of us have said that Devotary is almost certainly not Sophie, which means most of us regarded him as cleared before the conversion. This means that Devotary is a very obvious choice for conversion, and therefore probably not the best choice.- 268 replies

I assume defenses are mentioned in the write-up if they are relevant (ie: blocked an attack)? If so, I think we can assume that Sophie decided to convert someone today.- 268 replies

If you go to their profile page, and click on the link to the post you want, you'll get an url linking to the specific post. Putting that in your post here will give you a clear link to that post. You shouldn't do this with posts in the current thread though, as those links break once the thread gets merged. I'll move my vote to Devotary. We've all been talking about how likely he is to not be sophie, so I'd prefer it if Sophie doesn't get the chance to convert him. tally Bort (3): Drought, Elenion, Devotary Elenion (1): Bort Drought (1): Randuir, Young Bard Randuir (1): Elandera, Orlok Crimsn (0): Len Young Bard(1): Elandara Devotary (1): Randuir- 268 replies

DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Just wanted to point out that untill about 10 minutes ago, the flow of the thread was going after me or Drought. If you've got the time, could you read through the arguments against the three of us and decide based on that who you'd rather vote on? @Elandera, sure, I'm willing to spread the votes around a bit more. Edit: I want to see if Crimsn decides to change her vote. Once she's made her choice, I'll move my vote to spread out the number of votes, if necessary.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
You're allowed to struggle to believe that, but me missing that is pretty much exactly what happened. The roles where the point of interest for me because they did something new (the progression to ever stronger roles), while I thought I knew most of the stuff about Sophie already (eliminator faction that can convert). When I started wondering about whether Sophie started alone I read through it again, but skipped over the line you're quoting here. If you look back to Lg43, I have a 'talent' for being quite aware about what some parts of the rules do, yet being either unaware or mistaken about what other parts to, despite the rules being quite clear on that front, and even very close to stuff I did get right. The thing that felt off was your mention of 'until you convince me otherwise'. This felt like too open ended for something that was apparently intended to be just a poke vote. Honestly, my perception of who is and isn't new might have been skewed somewhat (based on Eternum's comment I already dropped him from the 'new'list, while I think I just haven't played that many games with Crimsn). It might be that I'm reading too much into it, but we've had very little information, so I'll try to make use of anything I think could point us to Sophie. I also gave more detail on those reads in this post: As I said, you're allowed to believe that, but I think LG43 proved you wrong. That was a far more complicated game, of course, but it's the same kind of mistake as I made there. Voting is important for gaining information. As Elenion pointed out, we've only got a couple of cycles to lynch Sophie or a bot, and if we all just sit around hoping for information to come to us, nothing will happen. By voting you force the discussion to take place. tally Bort (3): Drought, Elenion, DevotaryElenion (1): BortDrought (2): Randuir, Young BardRanduir (2): Elandera, OrlokCrimsn (0): Len- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm going to retract my vote on Bort. I still think he's suspicious, but I was extremely suspicious of him in LG44 for pretty similar reasons, and I was wrong then. (I know LG44 is still ongoing, but Bort has already died there and his alignment has been revealed, so I assume mentioning this here is not an issue. My apologies if it is.) That leaves me with the question of who to vote for instead. After what Devotary pointed out about Elenion's logic I'm now fairly certain that he isn't Sophie, so I'm not joining that lynch. I can see a Sophie!Orlok, somewhat, but I'd also hate to lynch him on what is a rather tentative 'maybe' right now. Of those that I hadn't ruled out before I'm left with Drought, Young Bard, and eternum. Right now I'm not seeing a Sophie!eternum as he seems to have only properly joined the game this cycle, and I'm still gut-reading young bard as village..though he hasn't posted during this cycle yet ( @Young Bard). By process of elimination, this'd place my vote on Drought. So Drought, consider this a poke vote. please try to talk a bit more so that I can actually judge you on your own merits rather than ending up with you because various others drop off the list. Edit: also, this is likely my last post this cycle. I might be on just before turnover, but I won't guarantee that.- 268 replies

That's a list that covers almost half of the living players, and lines up with my estimate that Sohpie is one of the more experienced players, so I'd say that's a rather safe bet. This could be so, but your post on Elenion didn't say 'Guys, is this suspicious?', but rather 'Guys, take a look at how suspicious this is!', or that's how I read it at any rate. However, I don't think you're acting particularly different from last game in which I became very suspicious of you. I'll take a bit of time to re-evaluate my vote.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
The reason can best be summarized as 'just because'. I'll try to get future changes done between games though . Yeah, sorry about that. You just never really appeared on my radar, I think. Now that I'm thinking back on it we've definitely played more games together than I realized though, so I probably should put you back on the list of suspicions . Anyway, voting has been slow, and that's not been helping discussion much. As I mentioned before, I think Sophie is among the more experienced players based on the kill on Walin, so If I drop those that I'm sure are fairly new, and remove devotary as well because I think he likely isn't Sophie (and myself because I know I'm not Sophie, but feel free to form your own opinion), we're left with: DroughtBringer (Player List) Eternum (x/0) Elenion (TK421) Young Bard (Halting Algorithm) Bort (Black IC) Orlork Tsubodai (McAfee) Droughtbringer and Eternum have only two posts with real content between the two of them, so I don't have a read on them one way or another. I would like to note that Eternum's first post was this cycle, so there's a non-zero chance that eh wouldn't have been on to submit a kill if he was sophie. Elenion has posted a bit more. He started D1 with discussing the likely amount of cycles we've got before we need to have lynched an elim. That's a fairly safe bit of discussion, but at that point in D1 I don't think there really was anything else to talk about. I'm not really sure what to think of doing a CC lynch, but he started that in the last couple of hours of the cycle, so we didn't lose much (if any) discussion because of that. Overall, I don't really have a read on Len either. I'm very, very tentatively leaning village on young Bard right now. Gah, I checked back to Lg43, and I was right in thinking that his play-style seemed similar, but I misremembered his alignment that game. Still, the way he jumped on one of Devotary's comments seems to me to be the kind of discrepancies a village player would be quicker to spot than an elim. Neutral/very slight village gut-read Bort hasn't posted much either. He poked Crimsn during C1. However, the way he went after Elenion seems a bit odd. He didn't seem more aggressive than in previous games, but the way he was casting suspicion at Elenion I'm somewhat surprised he didn't back it up with a vote. Very slight Elim read. I'm unsure about Orlok, but that's because I'm always unsure about him. Elenion is right that the kill that happened would be typical for Orlok, but it's not just typical for him. I really don't like the suggestion for lynching the steward though, as that means we'll be throwing this lynch away with likely very little discussion, for a bit of gain that will not help us find sophie, only her converts, and if Sophie decides to hold off on converting it'll not really gain us anything. Neutral/very slight elim read. I'm going to vote on Bort for now, but that vote's not set in stone. I'd also like to encourage both Drought and Eternum to speak more.- 268 replies

I checked that, but we hadn't really discussed the possibility of Sophie not being able to kill before Elenion made that post. Devotary was the first to really bring that up aftewards. I can imagine that if you haven't read the rules very well you'd just assume Sophie would have a kill. This doesn't clear Elenion, of course, but I can very easily see a village!elenion doing this.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, If she waits too long then all of those she might want to convert are protected by having roles. Converting early increases the chance that a role gets passed to your team. I now agree that Sophie probably has only two lives, because if she had three I see no reason for her to have killed instead of converted this cycle. As for reads, I think that crimsn-Wolf is likely village, as that was not the kind of stunt a Sophie with no converts would do. On the other hand, she said herself that she intended to hop on the Coop vote, which I something I could see Sophie doing... I tentatively agree with the rest of Elenion's reads, with the exception of his village read on Young Bard. I don't think there's anything inherently village on working with Devotary's plan. I expect our Sophie to be one of our more experienced players, btw. The Walin kill gave us very little information without clearing out a true inactive, while I'd expect a newer Sophie to have targeted an obvious threat (or a true inactive) instead. That only really rules out Elandera, Crimsn-wolf and maybe Eternum though.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Like Bort, I'll be signing off after finishing this post. I expect I'll be able to make it back before roll-over on other cycles, but I don't expect to wake up early enough this cycle. First, let me ping everyone that hasn't posted yet: @Droughtbringer, @Eternum, @Walin, @Coop772 Next, I'd like to quickly talk about my lack of suspicions. No one has really done anything that makes me lean elim on them, though very few people have done stuff that makes me lean village either. Orlok's vote on Elenion initially felt off to me, but I think Elim!Orlok would be more sneaky than this if they wanted Elenion lynched, so it's probably just village!Orlok trying to jump-start lynch discussion. So that's why i won't be voting this cycle. If I thought I could make it before roll-over I might have poked one of our inactives, but since I won't be around to retract my vote in case they turn up before the cycle is over I won't do that either.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I haven't mathed it out, but I'm not as certain as Elenion and Orlok that Sophie only has two lives. Three seems on the high end of things, but two seems to be a bit low. After all, she dies after the last conversion, so Sophie with only two lives translates to a 2-man elim team. Since the roles all start village and can't be converted, a small elim team can't be balanced by roles either. On the other hand, as the game progresses the chance of the elims getting an advanced role increases as well, so that might be a balancing factor. @Orlok Tsubodai, Is there a particular reason for your vote on Elenion, or was it just a poke vote? Asking someone to convince you that they're not evil on day one seems a bit of a tall order.- 268 replies

Quick Fix Game 31: <MISSING VARIABLE>
DeTess replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
This game has some interesting dynamics with the roles, with each role getting stronger whenever the previous holder of the role dies. Unfortunately there's no guarantee that the new, stronger role will be given to a villager. However, at the start of the game the three players with roles are confirmed good, which might be a very useful property if they manage to stay alive during most of the game, as it would allow for the game to be actually solved earlier than usual. Unfortunately Sophie's conversion ability does function as a pseudo-role-scan (since people holding roles can not be converted), so the chances of the original holders of the roles staying alive till the end of the game aren't that good. My recommendation to those of us who started the game with roles is to be very careful with role-claims in PM's, but if you're under serious threat of the lynch, claiming might save us all a lot of trouble later. Just don't false-claim if you're not an elim, as that'll just result in the real person with the role claiming and you getting lynched, which only helps the elims. On the subject of the lynch, turnover is at 9 Am for me, so I will probably be able to respond to a last minute lynch against me. I'd still prefer it if you guys didn't lynch me while I'm asleep though . @A Joe in the Bush, does Sophie start alone? On a completely unrelated note, looking at the player list reminds me of playing World of Warcraft back in the day, with the mix of 'in-character' names and jokes, references and general 'out of character' names.- 268 replies

Long Game 44: Shadows of Elantris Redux
DeTess replied to Herowannabe's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Given that we've got pinch-hitters, I really don't see how this is helping anyone, HH. As for the Bort/Kidpen discussion, I can see a case for lynching Bort, but not so much for lynching Kidpen. Kidpen's opening was just weird, but it attracts attention in a way elims probably wouldn't enjoy. Why open with saying that you're an elim in the hope that people will just brush it off as a joke if you could also not do that, keeping you out of the spotlight? Elenion does seem to have a point about how Bort seemed too aggressive, but I'm still wary of him because of the way he phrased that initial accusation. I haven't seen any discussion about not worrying about Jeskeri. I have seen people discussing ways to counter the Derethi because that's just easier to discuss right now because of the mechanics involved. Actually, HH, Bort. Bort seems to be grasping for reasons and justification for why he did what he did, which just feels off. I do suspect HH, and if Bort flips elim HH will be my next suspicion, as his vote for Badger could have been intended to save a team-mate.- 1185 replies

Why do you feel the need to point this out, Elenion? You're right in that it would look somewhat bad, but your comment also seems very reasonable, so even if Bort was right, I doubt most people would give it more than a passing glance. But now that you took time to specifically call out that eventuality (and in doing so, I assume you're trying to protect yourself from any fallout), I'd be more suspicious of you if Bort ends up being right, not less. In most cases, the answer is yes. If this isn't the case, it's usually mentioned specifically in the rules. @Mraize, yes, you're allowed to RP during the night. Why wouldn't you be allowed to do so?- 1185 replies

.... a big post just got eaten by the site (and definitely not by my mistake of accidentally going a page back)... Okay, so in summary: Seon-holders can't make PM's with elantrians according to the rules. Announcing that you're going to protect the current lynch target with a pendant without providing reasons is going to get you lynched, and the Jeskeri will probably target converted people over non-converted people (if they know who is and isn't converted) with their kill if all else is equal as that increases the time before the Gyorn wins. Heh, I should lose posts more often, I can be a lot more concise if I'm slightly annoyed and unwilling to redo work.- 1185 replies

Are we certain the Gyorn is a 'convert' though? I checked the rules for that, and I couldn't find it stated one way or another (though I could have missed it, of course). Doing it either way would make sense. Also, the Gyorn belongs to the Shu-dereth faction, which is separate from being a convert, so a scan would catch him either way.- 1185 replies

waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait... Aman is playing again?!? Welcome back! I'd love to PM you, but unfortunate only people with Seons can make PM's. So if someone could give me a Seon, I'd appreciate that edit: I can see where you're coming from with regards to the converts, but I'm not sure it'll make a large difference in the long run. It would make picking an Odiv a bit more tricky for the Gyorn, but those reveals could be used for some manipulation as well.- 1185 replies

Long Game 44: Shadows of Elantris Redux

Alright, the game's on. Some comments on other posts: I don't really see why they wouldn't. It doesn't clear them of anything ( @Herowannabe, does the Gyorn count as a Shu-Dereth convert?), but it might help with finding the Odiv. We do have two pinch-hitters though, so killing inactives isn't really that useful. We've also only got one real scan-role, so it's not like we'll have a ton of scans going around. Personally, I think these pendants should just be used at their owners discretion, as throwing away a bunch of village-owned kills in the hope that it avoids a false positive seems like a waste. Though it is true that the pendants can't be used to kill a cultist, that just turns that kill into a pseudo-alignment scan (just don't use it unless you're quite certain the target is evil, as you'll know their alignment for certain afterwards, one way or another). This could work, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. The pendant does have a useful alternative power (very useful in the late game), so any elims won't throw theirs away in the way you suggested. I think any villagers holding these might as well keep them, as they can be used to, for example, break up a hammer attempt. If there was an actual faction conversion mechanic I'd agree, but there is only one faction conversion in the entire game, so I don't think the risk of a pendant ending with the odiv is that big. On the topic of the Odiv, unless all converts claim, I suspect the Odiv will be recruited this cycle as it doubles the Gyorn's factions amount of available converts per cycle.- 1185 replies
