Straw stood in the crowd and watched Shard apologize for his actions. In Straw's opinion, they sounded quite funny. Those corrupt professors definitely deserved to have to deal with some pigs. Straw hadn't heard any music when he was reading books with Bryn, but they'd been pretty deep in the archives. Straw had never really had a good ear either, so it'd make sense that he hadn't heard it. As for talking to Nobles, the Nobles deserved every bit of backtalk. It didn't matter whether they were from Vint or Atur, they were scum either way. Earlier that day, some noble, Arael Solon, had complained about him for absolutely no reason. Straw hoped that Arael ended up getting in trouble for something. It'd serve him right. After Shard had stalked off, Straw sat for a bit and watched the people walking around the university. However, it started looking stormy, so Straw stood up and went back into the Archives to study. Maybe he'd run into Bryn again. Studying with her had been very enjoyable, particularly with how she seemed to dislike the nobles as well, what with her occasionally pretending to be one. Life in the university continued, but soon enough, tragedy was likely to strike again. Straw just hoped he wasn't involved.

More book opinions from Straw Altiora: "Striking Easily" - Straw tried some of the advice in this book on martial arts, which promised almost instantaneous results and a massive increase in combat ability. However, it turned out that martial arts were not appreciated in the Archives, and he was forced to stop trying to learn from the book. It'd be bad if this book happened to get into the wrong hands. "Devoted to Spontaneity" - This book was a biography of someone who had simply devoted their entire life to being as spontaneous as possible. While it may have been enjoyable for them, it did not end up working out well. They apparently had great difficulty finding any kind of long term employment due to their chaotic nature and habit of suddenly quitting their job. They also had difficulty with money, as they would spontaneously spend it on things. Overall, their lifestyle was quite interesting to study, but Straw had no desire to go down the same path. It sounded like quite a bother. "A Greater Power" - This book was simply filled with prayers and religious lessons. It didn't really have anything special inside it, and was a very normal book. In fact, it was so normal that it was almost abnormal, if that was even possible.

I was meaning that it doesn't give us any direct information. I know perfectly well that it causes discussion. In my opinion, the lynch seems to mechanically harm us, but helps us see connections between players. I'm curious if you can think of any ways to get discussion and see connections without actually having a lynch. I'd still like people to spread out votes if possible today, and we can always talk about actually lynching tomorrow.

Okay, that's reasonable. I haven't exactly been passive and going along with it. I have repeatedly shown why it is a good idea. I'm also confused as to why it is intrinsically better to argue rather than agreeing. If I think an idea is good, I'm hardly going to argue that it's bad, as that would be rather counterproductive. I'm curious as to what you think the village will gain from this, and I'd appreciate if you could offer your thoughts on why we should actively attempt to put players on the horns. In my opinion, it seems like the majority of university actions and Imre items are more beneficial to the village. Due to this, I would think we'd want to maximize the amount of money and field abilities that students can have.

The lynch doesn't actually reveal any information, so in my opinion it's best to try to spread out the consequences as much as possible. I also feel like the university abilities help the village far more than they help the elims. Due to this, I think it's preferable to keep students at the university if possible. I also feel like it is immensely unfair to try to lynch players at this point in the turn. If we're going to have a lynch, we should decide at the beginning so everyone can argue and defend themselves.

Would you mind explaining why you're so suspicious of me? EDIT: Also, why are you waiting until now to do this? We've already decided to spread out the votes. It's fine if you want to start going after people next turn, but now is not the time.

@Elandera would you mind placing your vote(s)? We're getting closer to the end of the turn and votes aren't fully spread out. Straw had found some more books in the library: "Crimes of the Scarred Librarian" - This book was about an ancient Master Archivist. They had apparently used their powers to learn dark abilities and then murdered several students when they were confronted. It was interesting that the university had been through dark times before and survived mostly intact. "A Practical Guide to Cats" - This book contained advice for owning and raising a cat. It also contained several tables that helped you identify your cat's breed. Straw thought it seemed useful enough, even if he wasn't much of a fan of cats. "Board Games for the Bored" - Straw wasn't particularly into board games, but he was bored, so he decided to read this book. It was filled with complex diagrams describing board game design and the history of board games in the Four Corners. Overall, Straw found it rather boring. "Burnt Spaghetti" - This cooking book was written by a fanatical chef with a unique style of cooking. They thought that burnt food was delicious and was particularly fond of burnt noodles. They claimed that the added crunchiness made the pasta several times better. Straw didn't really believe them, but he'd never had burnt spaghetti, so he couldn't really say for sure.

Straw had spent a good deal of time studying in the library with Bryn. He had had quite a bit of fun reading all the books he could find! He also ended up finding a book about pranks that you could do with sympathy. Unfortunately, he couldn't do any of them. Perhaps some sympathist would be interested in it. Unfortunately, Straw spent so much time reading books that he never got around to doing his actual homework assignment. Oops! Due to this, Straw's master was less than pleased, and chose to not elevate him. Hopefully he wouldn't go insane while waiting for his master to finally let him be in the Arcanum. When Straw finally returned to his rooms, he found a note and a piece of candy for him! How nice of them. Hopefully it wasn't poisonous. That would be very bad and not fun at all. Straw had heard a rumor that one person hadn't gotten one. In his opinion, that was either a mistake or malicious action. It could maybe be that the person handing out the candies just didn't give themselves one, but why wouldn't you give yourself a candy? This month had been slightly less dramatic than the last one, thankfully. Someone had apparently gone insane, there was a random baby at the university, and one person was brought on the Horns, but other than that there wasn't much important stuff happening. Most of the university was focused on getting into the Arcanum, after all.

Most people will not have six EP, so here are the odds on five EP: One field: 1 - (10/15) = 33.33% Two fields: 1 - (10/12)*(10/13) = 35.90% Three fields: 1 - ((10/12)^2)*(10/11) = 36.87% Four fields: 1 - ((10/11)^3)*(10/12) = 37.39% Five fields: 1 - (10/11)^5 = 37.91%

It seemed like Seoras and Bryn had finally gotten the poor assistant librarian to show them what Bryn was looking for. Bryn was still keeping up the act, probably just for her own amusement. From what Straw could remember, Bryn seemed pretty chaotic, so he wouldn't put it past her to bother the man as much as she could. Eventually, Seoras came up to Straw and asked him if he needed any help. "Hey. Did you want me to ask where to find a thing, or do you reckon you heard enough to find what you were after?" Straw thought for a bit and eventually replied, "No thank you. I think I've heard enough to work out where to find the books I'm interested in. However, I think I'll stick around for a bit and see what happens. Those journals sound both interesting and useful. Personally, I have little desire to take a trip to the Crockery." Suddenly, Straw had a strange feeling that someone named Ugfal was complaining about him. However, it didn't seem malicious, so he was perfectly fine with it. He had been complained about before, and nothing had ever come from it. Then again, if he was suddenly having strange feelings and hearing voices, a complaint would probably be the least of his problems. Hopefully, Seoras and Bryn would be fine with him staying and taking a look at some of those journals. ( @Haelbarde @Burnt Spaghetti )

Straw had been rather taken off guard by the rapid exchange between Bryn and Seoras. He never really got a chance to answer any of their questions, and before much time had passed he found himself being dragged along. Bryn and Seoras had spotted a shelver and had decided to put up an act for some reason. He was pretty sure that neither of them was noble, so it was probably just an attempt to manipulate the poor man. He decided to just stay in the back for now, and let the two of them short it out. Straw had no desire to end up getting in trouble for harassing a random worker, but perhaps Bryn's plan would yield some benefits. Either way, watching the interaction between the three of them should be entertaining at the very least. While Straw was waiting for Bryn and Seoras to continue their conversation, he turned his eyes to the books on the shelf nearby. "Traps: An Illustrated Guide" - Probably some sort of instructional guide. It didn't seem like it would be very useful here, since there wasn't much hunting going on in the university. "The Death of the Laughing Goat" - Straw really had no idea what this book was supposed to be about. It sounded like some kind of historical novel, but why would anyone care about a laughing goat? "Mermaids and Sirens" - Obviously a fanciful book, but with the rumors of Skindancers, perhaps it would be a good idea to start looking into other mythical creatures... I've been keeping my own activity count and got the same numbers. Do you mean Bard instead of Walin? I think Walin posted last turn. It's interesting that people's posting count varied so little based on social class. I would be very interested to see the differences in money earned per post, as some people have been doing quite a lot of RP. I agree about the activity! It's great to see so many people talking. Hopefully we can get just as much discussion as we did last turn. I'm still upset that game related discussion posts count for so little. I believe I've made nine so far (including this one), for a total of only five jots and five drabs off of my tuition. I'll try to RP a bit more later on today. I have about 50 words left in my RP post draft. For voting behavior this turn, I think we should probably just do the same thing as last turn, as that seems to have worked out decently well (sorry Coda ). Don't forget to complete the activity checklist this turn! Apparently the tuition reductions are per turn, not per term. This means that everyone should be able to get a 3.2 talent tuition reduction without that much effort. This should make things easier for Edema Ruh. Most Ruh will be paying ten talents of tuition and five jots for lodging for a total of 10.5 talents. With 3.2 talents from activity checks and a stipend of 5.87, this means that they have to raise 1.63 talents in order to break even. Straw Altiora had enjoyed his first month at the university, even though he hadn’t really socialized much with the other students. His studies had been somewhat enjoyable, even if they were occasionally boring. Unfortunately, this month had started out with a new student suddenly going insane, and several other students being punished for unknown offenses. There had been a flood of drama and minor complaints in the first month, but Straw hadn’t really seen any real animosity between students. It was probably just the masters getting revenge on the students who they disliked. Everyone knew the masters were corrupt, even if they had punished that one noble, Catalan. As Straw walked into the archives, ready to find some books for class, he noticed Bryn from his introductory class talking with some other student. Hopefully, they’d be able to help him find his way around the archives. Bryn was a bit too social for his liking, but she’d talked to so many other students that she probably knew more about the archives than he did. Eventually, Straw walked up to Bryn and greeted her, “Hello, I’m Straw Altiora. You can call me Straw, but please don’t try to shorten my name any further. It never sounds good. So, do either of you two know how to get around this place?” ( @Burnt Spaghetti @Haelbarde )

I'll vote on Elandera to spread the votes out again. I'm rather surprised that the eliminators targeted Hemalurgic Headshot. He was a noble, and therefore had a very good chance of staying at The Horse and Four, which has a 40% of blocking sabotages. I'm pretty surprised that someone actually got on the second level of the horns. I wonder if it's due to bad luck, or if there are a lot of players staying at the Golden Pony. I didn't realize that elevations are essentially delayed one turn. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I got elevated in my chosen field. One interesting thing about this game is that only one third of the players will be elevated per turn as this stand at the moment. This means that most players will have to wait a bit in order to be elevated. However, those who have to wait longer but keep investing in the same field will likely progress faster, as they'll have their leftover EP. Another thing that I just thought of is that most abilities that the Skindancers would want tend to cause insanity. Due to this, I think that Skindancers might go into Physicking so they can use the counseling ability on their fellow Skindancers. The roleblock and self-protect would also be useful for them.

There are some fairly brutal penalties for PMing too much. You can get up to four talents of tuition inflation. El and Wilson really don't like people PMing a lot I guess. BTW @Elbereth / @little wilson, is "participation" word count or post count? If it's the first, the PM limit should be fairly easy to handle, as you only start getting hit with penalties when 75% of your participation is in PMs. I believe that the activity is for several reasons. First of all, Fifth's game is just waiting for the aftermath, so nobody is playing any other game at the moment and can afford to only focus on this game. Secondly, the current pandemic means that a lot of us have significantly more free time on our hands, and can afford to spend more time on this game. Finally, there are tuition reductions for activity, which means that people want to be active so they can get more money. The ruleset is also quite long, so we have plenty of things to discuss at the moment. Another factor is that there are significantly more players in this game than there have been in the last few SE games. Yeah, that's my point. In my opinion, insanity is only a little bit worse than death, as for someone who knows less than five names, it'd take an average of 14 turns to break out.

I will change my vote from Lopen to Burnt Spaghetti. I'm doing this to further spread out the votes. @Haelbarde I believe your vote count is missing Coda's vote on Walin. Currently, we have a vote on every noble. We still need votes on these commoners: DeTess, Xinoehp, Lord Silberfarben, Zillah, Sart, Stink. Some thoughts on the Edema Ruh: Edema Ruh are in a lot of trouble. A few complaints and/or being taken on the horns can essentially cripple their ability to attend the university. If an Edema Ruh completes the basic activity checks and bunks in Mews, they’ll end up with a net loss of two talents, nine jots, and three drabs. In order to break even, an Edema Ruh would have to make six RP posts. A Ruh could theoretically make a lot of game discussion posts instead, but they’d have to make ten game discussion posts to equal just one RP post. Ruh also have better odds at the Loaded Dice, but they’re barely scraping by, so they probably won’t want to risk it. The best option for Ruh is to try for the talent pipes as soon as they think they can win them. Something that I just thought of is that for Edema Ruh (and commoners to some extent) who are planning on going into any field that causes insanity, the streets might actually be preferable to Mews. Without any field insanity bonus, the chance of going insane while staying in Mews is the same as the odds of getting killed on the streets. With the field insanity bonus, Mews starts getting more and more dangerous.

I am using a binomial probability calculator. I checked that it was what I wanted by plugging a few tests into a more limited calculator as well. I think that my probabilities make a lot more sense when you consider how things would look if they were distributed optimally. For example, in scenario #2, let's say that the masters give one DP to everyone at the golden pony, and then distribute the remaining 40 DP among the 21 players. This would mean that every noble and commoner would have exactly four DP, except for two, who would have three. As it is very unlikely that they would be so perfectly distributed, you end up with a fairly high probability that a player will end up on the horns.

Sorry for the double post, but I just noticed Devotary's point that Yllish commoners can also start at the Golden Pony. Here's my analysis of two voting scenarios (assuming that nobility and commoners are equally split between subclasses and starting locations are evenly chosen): Scenario #1 (one vote on all commoners and nobles): There are roughly five players starting at the golden pony. This means that DP is distributed between the sixteen remaining players. If a player is not at the Golden Pony, there is a 28.86% chance of them being taken on the first level of the horns, a 2.04% chance of them being taken on the second level, and a 0.04% chance of them being taken on a higher level of the horns. If a player is at the Golden Pony, there is a 0% chance of them being taken on the horns. Scenario #2 (two votes on all commoners and nobles): If a player is not at the Golden Pony, there is a 34.35% chance of them being taken on the first level of the horns, a 1.9% chance of them being taken on the second level, and a 0.02% chance of them being taken on a higher level of the horns. If a player is at the Golden Pony, there is a 16.03% chance of them being taken on the first level of the horns, a 0.51% chance of them being taken on the second level, and a 0.004% chance of them being taken on a higher level of the horns. Personally, I think that the first situation is preferable.

If you read what you quoted, I said that I just want all votes on nobles before voting on commoners, not that we only vote on nobles. In my opinion, the ideal situation would be to have two votes on every noble, one vote on every commoner, and no votes on every Ruh. Under this scenario, masters would have 21 targets for DP distribution. This would mean that for any noble not staying at the Golden Pony, they would have a 34.35% chance of being brought on the first level of the horns and 1.9% chance of them being brought on the second level of the horns. For commoners and nobles staying at the Golden Pony, there would be a 16.03% chance of being brought on the first level of the horns and a 0.51% of being brought on the second level of the horns. I did not include the odds for higher levels of the horns, as they begin to rapidly approach 0%. For example, the odds of a noble not staying at the Golden Pony being brought on a higher level of the horns are just 0.02%. I didn't take the time to calculate this, but these probabilities are not independent. If one student receives DP, it lowers the odds of other students being taken on the horns. I'll look into calculating this, but statistics is not my strong suit. To help distribute the votes further, I will move my vote from Karnage to Lopen. I don't think he has a vote on him yet. I'm a bit confused about your second point. Expelling nobles does not grant them any more power, as they are free to drop out at any time. I don't think that being expelled even grants you the ability to always be in Imre, as the Gray Man offers that ability to expelled students. This would mean that Vintish noblemen would be unable to be in Imre for both months, as they are forced to chose out of the two most expensive lodgings that they can afford.
