  1. Not just me. Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's example that I was responding to was explicitly about two spanreeds being conjoined and the frame of reference being changed (without the user being aware) after the fact. I don't think I have any issue with the frame of reference being established and fixed at the time of conjoinment, in and of itself. I don't see how that solves any of the issues I have? Yes, it gives a framework to answer what would happen in these thought experiments. Those are only being introduced to conceptualize what's going on though. What you seem to be describing is precisely what this new fabrial does. Determine an arbitrary frame of reference, then conjoin them gems to lock that frame of reference. If they could already do this, why do they need a new aluminium-based fabrial for it? My problem is the fact that the frame of reference is so arbitrary. Adding the notion that it gets "locked" at conjoinment doesn't make it less arbitrary.
  2. This just doesn't work for me. I suggests the whole curtain thing isn't really even necessary, don't you think? Seems like you're arguing if they can just focus hard enough (?) then they have full mental control over their reference frame. I still feel very strongly that they would stop working like this if you saw them both at the same time because you wouldn't be able to rationalize that they're operating in separate reference frames. If you just need a bit of mental practice to exercise mental control over your own reference frame then that's totally unnecessary. No need to jump through hoops to create Reversers. Just take your Conjoined gems and say "well, forward for this one is now a different direction" and boom. It's a Reverser. And honestly, you get into even deeper trouble when you come to this new invention we see in chapter 19. Here they've invented a specific, revolutionary invention that allows them to redirect Conjoined gems. And it requires a somewhat elaborate fabrial. What you're saying seems to suggest to me that this whole thing was unnecessary. That they could have done the same thing by putting up curtains and turning one fabrial slowly (as a simple trick to help an operator mentally turn their reference frame). That all feels very problematic to me.

  4. Here's a discussion thread on RoW Chapter 19 You can read it here: https://www.tor.com/2020/11/10/read-rhythm-of-war-by-brandon-sanderson-chapter-nineteen/ This is the FINAL preview chapter! Rhythm of War comes next week!
  5. Dawnshard is HERE, and over on the Coppermind Wiki we are in crunch mode! The novella dropped at the end of last week, but only for those who backed the Way of Kings 10th Anniversary Kickstarter--so we have held off on allowing Dawnshard spoilers in the wiki until it is more widely available. That ends today, as most major ebook retailers now offer the book. Today, November 10th, a mere seven days before Rhythm of War arrives! Before the tidal wave of new Rhythm of War content engulfs us next week we are going to be doing everything we can to get Coppermind updated for Dawnshard, and we need your help! Veteran editors and newbies are all appreciated! Thankfully, a large amount of Dawnshard work is really fairly simple! Though there's certainly a few articles that will require more extensive effort, we've got a long list of newly-created, bite-sized articles to fill in and many existing articles that only need a few small additions! If you've never had the satisfaction of updating a Coppermind article to completion, you've missed out. And we've got a whole buffet of them just waiting for you! You're going to feel like Chiri-Chiri in the Thaylen Gemstone Reserve! Here's the plan: We're kicking off a 7-Day Dawnshard Blitz, in which we'll be trying to knock out as many updates as possible. That will start today, Tuesday November 10th and conclude at the end of Monday November 16th, right before the Rhythm of War release at midnight EST. You can find the list of objectives here. Put your username in the "Claimbed By" column to claim it. We ask that people only claim one article at a time! When you're finished make a note in the "Complete?" column and move on to another objective! Each objective has been assigned a point value based on how difficult we feel it will be. The goal for each article is to bring it fully to completion. Complete the objective and you get the full point value; partial credit will earn you one point. And the person with the most points at the end of the competition is the winner! The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive a one-time-only Chiri-Chiri Award to show off on their user page! And that's to say nothing of the self-satisfaction I can guarantee as well as the undying gratitude of countless Cosmere fans! Never edited Coppermind before? No problem! It's not hard and we've got plenty of resource to get you started. The most important thing you can do is join our Discord server, where you can get personal help at all hours. From there we can also recommend several guides and examples that will get you started. Just let us know that you're new and we'll give you a warm welcome! The competition begins NOW! Let's do this!
  6. One more timeline quirk: So Rysn says she was Vstim's apprentice for at least two years. ("hundreds" of days) Gavilar was murdered in late 1167. Szeth killed Gavilar about 2 years after being named Truthless, according to his TWoK-I-3 interlude. So he was Truthless in late 1165. Rysn's TWoK interlude was "nearly 7 years" after Vstim bought Szeth. So that interlude is late 1172 Rysn became his apprentice 5 months prior to the TWoK interlude, according to that interlude, so she became his apprentice in early 1172. Rysn's WoR interlude was about 2 years prior to Dawnshard, making it late 1172. So she was his apprentice for less than a year according to this timeline. Granted there's a lot of dates here which may not be precise... I can pull all of my exact numbers. But I'm having a hard time stretching it to 2 years. Just wanted to raise this issue in case it needs to be looked at further... Maybe Szeth's book 5 flashbacks will clear something up.
  7. Not a typo, but something I expect might bother Peter... There's two uses of "invigotrating"/"invigorated" in fairly close proximity. "Talking with them was exciting and invigorating." And the very next paragraph: "Their stories invigorated her..." The repetition just feels kind of clumsy to me. This bothered me as well. Jasnah and Shallan sailed from Kharbranth to the other side of the Frostlands in barely over 2 weeks, a distance that seems double what the Wandersail covers here in "a few weeks". Even with bad weather and delays (which I'd think would be notable enough for a mention) it feels like a stretch to me. And I have a similar issue with a line in chapter 7: So chapter 7/8/9 is just shy of the halfway point, somewhere off the coast of Tukar it seems. This is where Rysn suspects Nikli is the saboteur. Then in chapter 10 they spotted Aimia a few days ago, so they're on the final stretch. And this is where Rysn reveals Nikli, saying she's had "days" to think about it. So if chapter 5/6 was 2 weeks after they left in 4, (which is a generous interpretation of "a few") then 7/8/9 is at least 4 weeks out judging from the map (twice as far) and chapter 10 would be perhaps another 3 weeks after that. The TONE of the chapters reads to me like 10 is only a few days after 7. And it's weird to me that Nikli sat around for another several weeks without trying some other tactic to make them stop. Several weeks of Rysn suspecting Nikli but doing nothing about it? Just seems odd. I feel like chapter 7 should be put sometime after the halfway point (around Steen probably), with that line changed to "after they had reached the halfway point in their journey".
  8. I loved what Dawnshard gave us on all this, but it definitely didn't clear things up for me...
  9. I love the theory in general, but I do feel like the groupings need to be more... varied. The thing that irks me about something "symmetrical" like this is that it strips Adonalsium of personality I guess? If every aspect of Adonalsium has an opposite then it seems like they would be one giant can't-do-anything Sazed. It would seem like there's no life to the being. I wish I was more versed in mythology because I feel like their connection to the creation of life is important. The question I wonder is "what would a God consider important aspects of life?" If Adonalsium is creating life, what Commands would they give to make it be the kind of life they want it to be?
  10. Well put. I trust Brandon well enough at this point to be highly skeptical that he would ever do anything just to please fans or meet expectations. He's writing the story he wants to right. That doesn't mean he has every detail figured out from the start though. He has spoken plenty of times about how he outlines the plot carefully but let's the characters grow naturally. So, whatever may have been originally intended, when readers start to make observations about a character that he didn't consider, he owes it to himself and the character to explore that idea. Maybe that's where the character is going, despite the original intent. That's not caving to pressure; it's just the writing process. (especially if some of that feedback is coming from beta readers, who are picked to give impressions precisely because Brandon likes having additional perspectives on what he is doing. Sometimes people see things about your work that you didn't realize were there. I'm just glad he seems to have found a path for Jasnah that feels right to him. And I'm curious to see what it means for her character.

  14. Can you provide a description of what's happening in the feedback thread? Along with the other information requested in that first post. If you're on an Apple device, note that we're having some issues with Safari that we're working through now.
  15. Paleo, you may have seen it and I'm not sure what the solution is, but figured I'd record it here:

  22. Sorry, that was a mistake. It's back. Also, an actual Spanish speaker in the comments said that the translation is mostly decent, but made a few small adjustments of their own. (Didn't compare, so I'm not sure how extensively.) There are secrets that we have kept for a long time. Watchful. Sleepless. Eternal. And soon they will cease to be ours. The One that is Three seeks, unknowingly, the captured soul. The imprisoned spren, long forgotten. Can she free her own spirit in time to find the knowledge that condemns all the people of Roshar? The Fallen Soldier caresses and loves the spear, even as the weapon cleaves his own flesh. He always walks forward, always toward the darkness, without light. He can take none with him, save that which he alone can bring to life. The Broken Sister understands her mistakes and thinks that she herself is one. She seems so far away from her ancestors, but doesn't comprehend that they carry her on their shoulders. Towards victory, and towards that silence, the most important of all. And the Mother of Machines, the most crucial of all, dances with liars in a grand ball. She must unmask them, reach their hidden truths, and deliver them to the world. She has to recognize that the worst lies are those she tells herself. If they do, our secrets will finally become truths.
  23. Thanks for pointing out that error.
