  1. I made a spreadsheet which I think will serve to (1) clearly show which templates need a quote and (2) help keep track of ideas. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gkh8CndAzDrOkT9raNh7_LeAKvKq0bRBDOdyNye5A4E/edit#gid=0
  2. Definitely doesn't have to be green. Just would be nice if it was more distinct from all the other blue lines when burn rate is low. That's a neat idea! I'm not sure it fits with the book well, because I imagine the case where a coin pushed against the wall giving you a sudden jerk holds for pulling as well. If you pulled a coin and it got stuck at something along the way to you then you get a jerk. But in this case, it sounds like the magnitude of the force would drop? I don't follow. It's not velocity relative to the ground, but relative to one another. Relative velocity should be the same for both. Looks great! Might be nice to show the mass of an object that's in focus? This all looks really helpful, and it will be nice to see those force numbers.
  3. A few random comments. I tried out the gamepad and it worked pretty well, but I think it would be nice if you could control burn rate (or at least put a cap?) some other way. The triggers are too sensitive to get any control over that and it's practically impossible to see "blue targets". Also, I tend to think it would make more sense for Jump to be A or Y. X feels unintuitive. I imagine A, with X for coins, would work well. Even on mouse/keyboard, where you can set burn rate causing your target lines to highlight more, it's hard to make out the blue ones. Maybe it would be best to use green for selected targets? (alongside red) So blue for all non-selected targets and then green/red for things targeted. That would be a lot easier to distinguish I think. I played with the new velocity setting and it seemed about right to me, but I spent too much time getting used to the gamepad controls (and I'm still not very good regardless) so I don't have strong opinions concerning gameplay yet.

Hey @Casta mind if we use your art on Coppermind? And if so, do you have a website you'd like as the source, or do you just post here?
  5. Last month, we began a new initiative for the Coppermind. Lots of people want to help out with the wiki, but simply don't know where to start. So we offered up a list of specific objectives that we hoped to complete by the end of the month. The list included some larger projects, like updating Lirin, along with several smaller tasks, such as Rock's family members. The response was overwhelming, and we want to thank everyone involved! We had an incredibly productive month, and so many people contributed. We've got a few special mentions to make, but whether you wrote out a full article practically from scratch, or whether you did nothing beyond fixing a few spelling errors, we are so grateful for your contributions! There were many people who deserve a shout out, but we especially want to recognize the top our top contributors. These include Amanda (for work on Kaladin and Bridge Four), LadyLameness (for work on Lirin and more), Harveygreenfield (for work on Wax's history, going far beyond our objective), Rebeca (for work on a huge variety of things), and Jubilus (for work on Celebrant and other minor objectives). We're continuing the initiative this month, with a brand new set of objectives. As always, we're happy for any help we can get, so don't be shy. If you're new to editing the Coppermind, don't worry; we'll help you out with guides and plenty of assistance. You don't need experience, just the will to do help out! We'll also provide awards, because everyone loves fake internet points. So, here are our objectives for August. With a lot of Oathbringer content left to go, we're going to focus there again. If you find something you'd like to help with, claim it here, and let us know if you have any questions! (Please make sure if you sign up for a thing you say hi on Discord so we can touch base with you later this month! Our Coppermind Editor's Discord is here) Larger Projects 1. Kholinar Kholinar is a Dawncity, and an extensive sequence in Oathbringer shows it. Though there's a brief summary of what happened in Kholinar in Oathbringer, there's no reference to the riots that happened in Words of Radiance, the geography of the city, information on the windblades, and much more. This needs radical expansion. 2. Navani's History Here's a Kholin who needs some love. On top of her own credentials, she's connected to just about every important person on Roshar... But judging by her history section, you wouldn't know it! 3. Pattern's History Shallan's article might be the longest on Coppermind, but her poor Cryptic isn't getting the attention he deserves. This article needs work all around, but let's start with the History. 4. Syl's History Pattern isn't the only important spren in need of an update. Or, well, most of them do. But Syl is one of the most loveable and important spren that we know. Her history, however, hasn't been touched since Kaladin swore his second Ideal in Way of Kings. 5. Nergaoul This twisted Splinter of Odium single handedly drives Oathbringer's most powerful story while stirring up several wars on the side just for fun, but his article currently consists of two, solitary sentences. If that doesn't fill you with the Thrill, I don't know what will. 6. The War of Reckoning This conflict might be old news on Roshar, but the article is missing a lot of history from Words of Radiance that needs to be filled in. 7. The Diagram This secret organization is pulling strings all over Roshar. We'd like your help filling in what they've been up to in the history section. 8. Azir Our Vorin bias is showing, I'm afraid. Azir is arguably the most influential nation on Roshar, but their article isn't great. Let's start with the history section, though the whole thing needs attention. 9. Thaylen City This ancient Dawncity plays a prominent role on Roshar and in the story of Oathbringer, but the article currently consists of little more than some basic layout descriptions. We could really use some help fleshing out every aspect of this important capital city. 10. Wayne's History Okay, here's one for somebody who needs a break from Stormlight. Last month we covered Waxilium's history. Now let's do the same for his partner in crime. Smaller Tasks These are tasks that are much shorter and involve characters or topics that are minor. But, hey, minor things are important to have done too! Many of these articles are so short that they will not require separate sections. Research should be fairly straight forward. For short articles, include as much as you can possibly find about them. 1. Notable Spren There are several important spren whom we get to know a bit better in Oathbringer that need some work: Glys, Ivory, Wyndle, Rua, and Spark 2. Gavinor This poor kid lost both of his parents and his throne in Oathbringer. Least we could do is give him a proper article, right? If you're the kind of person who feels like swears directed at Moash aren't good enough, this might be your next step. 3. Eshonai's History Eshonai's flashbacks will be here before we know it, so it's important for us to get her history in good shape. The Words of Radiance portion might take a bit of work, but at least the Oathbringer portion is mostly finished already… 4. Western Nations Oathbringer gave us some more details about several western nations which haven't featured prominently in the story yet: Iri, Rira, Marat, Tashikk, Tukar, and Liafor 5. Tarah Kaladin finally spared us an actual memory of his former sweetheart! 6. The Valley The Valley is no longer a complete mystery! Would somebody like to step up and record what we learned about the place in Oathbringer? 7. Diagram Members Several known members of the Diagram could use an update for Oathbringer: Adrotagia, Mrall, Dukar, Graves, Maben, and Malata 8. Sons of Honor The Diagram aren't the only ones up to no good. We could use some help keeping track of the Sons of Honor. We got to see some of their plans in action, and Mraize offered up some spicy details. 9. Kholinar Wall Guard Another Kaladin squad (Kaladin getting another squad? what's new?) from Part Three of Oathbringer. These are: Noromin, Alaward, Beard, Hid, Hadinar, Vaceslv, Vardinar, and Ved 10. Returned Another one for those of you coming up for breath (heh) after too much Stormlight. There are a few minor Returned who could use some polishing: Calmseer, Hopefinder, Lifeblesser, Stillmark, Truthcall, and Weatherlove Awards We want to motivate people to help, so we will be giving out Coppermind awards for the users in August with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd most edits, and we'll also give out awards if you contributed to one of these items. They'll be on your user page for all to see. How do I to start? The most important thing is to be bold! Content is hard to write, but we can always format your stuff if it doesn't quite match conventions. MediaWiki notation may appear scary at first, but the best way to learn is through experience. If you're interested, we have lots of guides to help: Help:Contents. It does very much help to have ebooks so you can find instances of a specific word or person. (This is extremely helpful for minor characters). If you have physical books, ask us and we can help you determine this so you don't need to reread the whole text. We can also direct you towards some good articles to use as a go-by. Come join us on the dedicated Coppermind Discord, or come chat in the #coppermind channel on the 17th Shard Discord. We are really happy to help!
  6. @desi_sparta We know they did not end up there naturally. They were placed, presumably by Adonalsium, long before humans arrived.
  7. We just have very different measuring sticks for a successful marriage I guess. Or perhaps we interpret the characters very differently. Happy all the time? Absolutely not. But I honestly don't see the positives you're indicating. Evi worked to make the marriage work. She was committed. With a few rare exceptions, Dalinar did little beyond a few attempts to appease her. I'm really not sure where to begin. Would anybody in here consider their marriage acceptable for themselves? Not including the horrible ending of course. Just everything up to that point. If I let you choose between "that will be you" versus a 50:50 chance of successful or not in your own future... would you take the odds or settle with Dalinar-Evi's situation? Personally, I think their relationship is in serious need of counseling at every point along the road. Eh, but I don't know if it's worth going down that road. Getting off topic. Sorry.
  8. @ccstat Do you have those visibility calculations in any digital form? I was curious about looking into those myself. I feel pretty sure that what's described in the book just isn't logically possible, but I wanted to wrap my mind around the math. Calculating satellite visibility is not something I know how to do off the top of my head.
  9. You guys saw those flashbacks in a different light than I did, or maybe your only point is that it wasn't as bad as you expected. I'd say Dalinar and Evi's marriage was very much NOT a happy marriage. There was only one flashback I recall where their relationship seemed kind of okay. Dalinar wasn't physically abusive I guess, but that's a pretty low bar. In every other aspect of their relationship, Dalinar is a textbook Bad Husband most of the time, as far as I can tell. I tend to agree that Brandon has overdone the arranged marriage thing, but it doesn't really bother me so long as it's not some kind of weird commentary to suggest that arranged marriages are superior. I don't think we can assume he will diverge from the trope just because Stormlight is his magnum opus. You could just as easily argue that Stormlight is his opportunity to go all out with it. If this is a trope he likes to pull, then Stormlight is the chance to do it better than ever. He has explained that it's at least partly something he does for in-world cultural reasons. Perhaps Shallan-Adolin is Brandon's last hurrah with arranged marriages before the cosmere is culturally beyond them. Regardless, one reason I'm actually hopeful that Shallan-Adolin will stick is that we don't often get to see married people be married very often in fantasy. At least in my limited experience. Brandon did it a little bit with Vin-Elend I suppose, but their relationship was bland and static (to me) in the third book. I want to see some drama and growth. You could maybe do that with their marriage falling apart, but that's too bitter and tragic for my tastes. And I guess part of what I want to see is a couple "working through problems together"... Not just a couple having problems and failing to work through them.
  10. Huh... after playing around a bit. I think I do actually like the e^-r factor and no ANF a lot, but maybe that's just me. Feels good, though some of that may be just a matter of scale. Biggest downside of no ANF seems to be the lack of a sudden change when something becomes "anchored", as you said. I honestly feel like the e^-v factor might be a perfect addition. First, it would solve that issue with no ANF, as it's designed to basically. I'm wondering if it might coincidentally help you with the mass issues. I don't have a problem with the 16th root fix, but the velocity factor would effectively put a cap on velocity. You can only get moving so fast by pushing on a massive anchor before your force is minuscule. I suppose this alone isn't entirely true to the books, because without mass downplayed to some degree you'd still be experiencing ridiculous accelerations for that instant. The biggest concern would be how things work out where you have some relative velocity and still want to be able to Push/Pull effectively. For something like Pushing a coin away, it shouldn't be very noticeable. Soon it is moving so fast that lack of additional acceleration isn't remarkable. But I can imagine cases where it could maybe be an issue? Like if you're flying past a window and want to grab it and hang on. Depending how the balance works out, this might be hard to do. Difficult to say, though I'd love to see the results when you have a chance to try it out next week. Edit: Might be cool to put an optional info display. Things like current altitude and velocity. Target mass and distance, etc.
  11. Sounds awesome. And I finally got a chance to play around with this. It's a BLAST! Really well done so far. The controls aren't easy to grasp... but it's so much more intuitive than I would have guessed. Do the buildings have less friction or something? Seems like it's harder to jump from a Pushed coin on top of them. Also, is it possible to target more than one thing for a Push or Pull? Thought I saw that in one of the gifs, but I can only seem to do one for each.
  12. Misunderstanding or not, it was interesting to read what you worked through! I assumed at first you were referring to Pagerunner's thing, where velocity is part of the equation, but this sounds different. Almost opposite? If you're looking at relative velocities I don't see why you need to keep track of where the velocity is coming from or whether one thing or the other. If I recall, I think my concept using his idea was that the equation would have an "e^-v" term since it works very similarly to distance. That way you get 100% force when the Allomancer and coin are stationary relative to one another. It diminishes as the coin accelerates away. Then it hits a wall, velocity is suddenly zeroed out, and force instantly jumps from some lower level back to 100%. Practically speaking, I don't know how computationally intense that would be... to keep track of the velocity of every metal object relative to the Allomancer. And I don't know that it would yield results that feel right. I can't put my finger on why ANF bothers me. I'll have to think about it. I haven't had a chance to test the game out, but I'm really itching too now. This is not the right thread to debate it, and I don't know that you want to go down that road. But I feel quite strongly that isn't how it works. Gravity, including sudden or rapid changes, can't be felt. The only case where you feel something with Lashing is with the air resistance produced. The simplest issue you deal with is that at terminal velocity under multiple Lashings (no sudden changes here) you feel the full weight of those Lashings by means of strong wind blowing against you. Lashed 5 times and currently at terminal velocity? It feels like wind is blowing against you so hard that you're being accelerated by 5Gs.
  13. Yeah, no technical issue with an actual r=0 case, but just the practical issue of very high values relative to some short distance away. I see you made use of that "16" factor again. Love it. Concerning center of mass... Yeah, I mostly agree. I think Brandon imagined something more like center of mass, but practically speaking that just doesn't make sense. You can't apply a point force on somebody in real life; you have to distribute it across... something. The biggest problem with the "gravity" approach is that characters describe whiplash. So I've kind of been working under the assumption that the "Allomantic charge" isn't evenly distributed throughout the body. Trying to tackle that in more detail is getting into the weeds perhaps. I don't really like the Allomantic Normal Force concept, but I guess if that's the clearest way to make the actions seem natural then it's the way to go. I'm curious though. Did things not work out as u/phantine predicted without ANF? His idea relied too much on force dropping off with distance faster? Seems like coins accelerating to 120 m/s in one frame should give a lot of recoil.
  14. @Artemos Did you give any thought to my e^-r concept for range? Assuming you saw it. It's probably unnecessarily complex for a game. I think Phantine felt it was unnecessarily complex for an equation. But it (1) avoids the issue of 1/r^2=infinity at r=0 (e^0=1) and (2) doesn't require a max range, which feels kind of clunky to me for "scientific" equation. Practically speaking, it can be made very similar to a linear relationship, depending on how you scale it. Just doesn't have a limit, and gives more weight to closer ranges. For example, something like e^(-r/20) gives you something practically similar to the 50-r that you're currently using... just a bit below the line until 40m and still at about 10% at 50m. Effectively 0 around 80m or so. I'd be curious to see how that feels versus the linear or inverse square relationships.
  15. The positions don't seem to be SUPER precise, I seem to recall, so this doesn't particularly matter to your point I think... But there are 50 minutes per hour, so this would be just 4 minutes before 8. I don't think there's a connection here though, because this isn't when Mishim is up. There seems to be a disconnect between the clocks and the bell system. (or perhaps between what we see in the east versus whatever Axies is using) Mishim rises late in the night and sets around dawn, but Axies is pretty clear in that interlude that the sun is well above the horizon. Of course this gets into the whole issue of the moons rising at the same time everywhere... If they (realistically) didn't then we don't have a perfect idea of what time they would be up in Iri. (or we'd have to do some work and make some assumptions) So the timing wouldn't match what the "clock" shows. I tend to think we need to assume that they DO magically rise the same time everywhere (more or less), however. It appears that 7:46 is late in the morning, which suggests to me that this clock system uses 10=midnight/noon with sunrise/sunset roughly at 5 am/pm. That means this event happens a bit closer to noon than sunrise. This is clearly different than the bell system described in the east, where "first night bell" is at/near sunset. Other "bell" mentions suggest "first bell" is sunrise, "second bell" is breakfast, and "tenth" bell is dinner (an hour before sunset). Maybe those are all shifted an hour later, but it makes the spacing between breakfast/noon and noon/dinner kind of weird whereas they are equally spaced this way. Not really clear if the bells are just a practical system used alongside an official clock time, or if Axies is measuring time differently than the easterners would... In any case, it doesn't seem to match up with Mishim in any way. I am curious though... now that we know lines of longitude across Roshar, are there any other astronomical relationships with this point in time? None that I see off the top of my head. I was imagining like... maybe that's when Urithiru is directly beneath the sun or something, but no. Seems that the east coast is nearly at sunset (just eyeballing it) which means it's noon around Azir? The moons are... well the moons are in multiple places depending on your interpretation. Cusicesh does look towards the Origin. Maybe the location of the Origin (if such a thing exists) is at midnight at this moment. Who knows...
  16. Hmm... I tend to think they're some of both. Definitely a seed of truth in her personas. Or, a lot of it really. But I think there's some level of "lie" involved as well. Some embellishment or exaggeration on top of the truth?
  17. I'm totally on board with Zane and his "romance" with Vin being Most Terrible. But I have to take some shots at Elend, because I really don't care for him--especially in the first book. Too much whiny rich kid for me, in Final Empire. I get that he's not directly in a position of power, but he could at least be preparing for the day that his generation can make a difference in the world. Earning respect. Networking. Researching. Planning... But no, he prefers to spend his time finding new ways to annoy his father, or running a book club with his other rich buddies. These things are pretty much all he does. Plus there was that line to Kelsier in Secret History, "Try to keep up, kid." Never have I ever wanted to see Kelsier punch someone more than in that moment.
  18. In the spirit of Beefcast, I thought it would be fun to start a Cosmere Beefs thread. Thought it might be fun to rant about our biggest complaints. Preferably focus on your biggest beef(s) rather than just giving a list. And while it's fine to make some minor comments on what somebody said, I think it would be best to upvote if you agree or just let it go if you don't. No need to defend yourself or get into an argument with somebody. Just a safe space to share your beef.
  19. I'm tagging this for Oathbringer spoilers and moving it to the OB Spoiler board.
  20. This is good stuff OP. I've seen a few bits and pieces before. I've seen a comparison drawn between the Bondsmith spren and the moons. But this is the first thing I've seen which puts it all together in a nice way. I particularly like the notion that the Natan people (and/or the Aimians) are related to the decline of the Sibling. You pointed out the moons in the background of the Ishar painting. Even more interesting to me is the fact that the moons appear in Jezrien and Vedel's paintings. If you look at Jezrien's belt buckle and the stained glass window behind Vedel you'll see the 10 orders/essences represented. Look closer and you'll see 3 circles that are the color of the moons, and positioned roughly at the time they rise (if the greater circle were a clock). So they definitely represent the moons, and I think it's interesting that they are included in these icons associated with the Heralds and the Knights Radiant. I'm left frustrated by what we do with Salas and Mishim. I've seen someone propose that each Bondsmith spren is associated with a moon, which I don't really like. Other than the stretch that Mishim is green and mischievous (Nightwatcher-like), I just don't see strong evidence for this. After talking on Discord, I think I like the idea that all of the moons have a spren, and then Nomon's was sort of elevated due to Cognitive reasons (the way people/singers thought about it, etc.), Shardic intervention, and/or Spiritual reasons (Connection to Aimians/Natans, for example). Then its decline was just sort of a reverse of this change. The other moons have unique spren as well. They just never reached the same tier as Nomon.
  21. I put it in. Feel free to check that I got it all, or critique my paragraph placement. The Full Text section needs some wording changed. The epigraphs don't technically contain the full text, as some portions are not revealed in the epigraph. The re-read at the end has some things that aren't in the epigraphs just as the epigraphs had some things that aren't in Sazed's re-read.
  22. @WeiryWriter, I've added everything to your TWoK timeline that I believe is well-sourced. Review when you have a chance and see if you agree. If we're comfortable making some light assumptions, we might be able to throw in some more. Or maybe add some that have limited precision. (i.e. we know the week, just not the day.) A few specific comments I have that need your opinion: You had "Kaladin kills the Shardbearer and is made a slave" in 1173-10 based on his comment that 4-year enlistment (starting during Weeping) only has a few weeks left. Karen pinned down TWoK-2 to 1173-7-8-3 however, and 8 months prior to that would be 1172-9-8-3. Perhaps 8 months means more like 8.5 months, which would put the date in early 1173-10. But there's also a comment he makes in TWoK-11 suggesting that he was a slave for 9 months. Maybe he's rounding up, so say that's 8.5 months. TWoK-11 seems to be in 1173-8-2 at the latest, which would put the event even earlier, in 1172-9-7. So basically we have a range of things suggesting late month 9 through late month 10. With two sources suggesting late month 9 and "weeks" from the end of a 4-year enlistment being somewhat arbitrary, I lean towards thinking it was in month 9. I put ~9. Feel free to edit however you think is best. Based on this line from TWoK-46 ("It was Chachel, third day of the week. The slave markets would show new wares.") how comfortable are you in assuming Kaladin arrived in the Shattered Plains on Chachel? Karen put the Chasmfiend hunt (WoK-12/13/15) on 8-7-2. Two lines in WoK-18 say it was "last week", so ch18 is in 8-8. Two lines in WoK-22 say that WoK-18 was two days ago. But good old Elhokar says in the same chapter that the hunt was 3 days ago. So there's a bit of a contradiction here. I think I've reported this but never heard back. I thought about assuming Elhokar is wrong (maybe he's drunk) and assuming "last week" is exactly one week. But that would put the unexpected evening highstorm of ch18/19 on 8-8-2, which is right before the expected early morning highstorm of ch46 on 8-8-3. Which seems... unlikely. Not sure if you want to leave all of this out or make some reasonable guesses. I'm changing some of the reference names, so hopefully that's okay. Easier for me to look them up by the chapter reference. Just realized... Karen has Kaladin's TWoK-40 recovery on the same day as the Chasmfiend hunt, and this doesn't work well since Sadeas would be off on the hunt all day. I'm going to stick with it though, and I guess assume that Sadeas just isn't personally present for the bridge run. (Skimming the chapter, I don't think he is explicitly mentioned as being there.) This one is maybe a bit tricky to show... Here's what I've got: (a) 8-9-3 - Dalinar experiences Thrill sickness during a battle. (b) 8-9-4 - Dalinar decides to abdicate. (c) 8-10-4 - Feverstone Keep vision. (d) 8-10-5 - Sadeas clears Dalinar's name and agrees to do joint assaults. (e) 9-1-1 - First joint bridge assault. The dates for (a) and (e) are known and fixed. We know these events happen in this order, and we know that (c) is one week after (b). We don't know how much time passes between a/b, c/d, or d/e. But as you can see, they just barely fit unless one of those pairs happen on the same day. Are you comfortable assuming that, which would let us include (b), (c), and (d)? Or should we leave them out for now?
  23. @Joe ST Some thoughts on how I'd structure a database. Pretty straight forward should be easy to dump the spreadsheet in, with the small exception that I'd need to combine source texts with citations. The hard part is pulling the info out and presenting it. Edit: Oh, I spoke too soon. Also need a [categories] field, for filtering/sorting. You’d want to define those in another table and pick from there. And better to break out [chapter] into [book] and [chapter], separately.

    Lift

I really like this Lift! Thanks for sharing even though you weren't happy with it.
  25. Nice! I've updated my Glyphs topic with most of the JordanCon stuff.
