    Finally got to the end. Expectations are like fine pottery, @Chaos and @Overlord Jebus. I didn't feel like the ending of Skyward had THAT big of an avalanche, but the way the scale of the book is... I just didn't expect it to be that massive? It felt right to me, though I don't think I would gush over it as much as Eric did.

    Click "click to import." It will open up a new page and a script will automatically pull all of the meta data from Arcanum. Then the reference in the article will pull the info from this page. We haven't made importing these a huge priority because, as you noted, you can follow the link as is. Though it is work that needs doing, so that the references look nicer and give some helpful info. You probably need "editor rights" from @Joe ST to do this though if you don't already have them, since it involves creating a new page.

    @Personification Looking at audio files in Arcanum from other Skyward Tour stops, the whole thing has been lasting 4.5 hours. That's a 45-60 minute Q&A/lecture/reading and then about 3.5 hours of signing line. You'd obviously miss the first bit, though he's been sharing basically the same lecture/reading at other events so you can always listen to that audio on Arcanum if you want. You can absolutely get books signed though. The bookstore is giving out tickets to save yourself a spot in line. If you come at 6:30 you'd obviously end up at the back of a fairly long line. If I were you, I'd take my time and get some dinner first, then come a bit later. The line will likely still be going at 8:30, if not longer. You could probably call the bookstore to check in if you wanted as well.

    Avalanche means more than the literal definition. I think Brandon's "avalanches" often: (1) Cover more than the climax alone. (e.g. in Skyward I would say the climax is when the bomb detonates and she goes to space, but the "avalanche" began a few chapters before that.) (2) Are more about describing the nature of Brandon's climaxes. Particularly the "overwhelming" aspect, because of the way they tend to have some much packed into them. You could call it a climax, but you would describe the climax as an avalanche.

    We're back with another set of Coppermind objectives! We've made some terrific progress on all things Stormlight Archive since Oathbringer released nearly one year ago, and much of the thanks for this goes to all of you who chipped in on objectives--both big and small--over the last few months. Some highlights from the last batch includes an update on all of Shallan's guards, the magnificent Queen Fen, continued updates to Kaladin and Bridge Four, and a few of the more notable spren. There were many people who deserve a shout out, but we especially want to recognize those who completed the most objectives. These include Rebeca (too many things to list), SpaceGodPerson (several of Shallan's guards), Amanda (Kaladin and Bridge Four), and Ladymxdnight (for a few spren). We're continuing the initiative this month, with a brand new set of objectives. As always, we're happy for any help we can get, so don't be shy. If you're new to editing the Coppermind, don't worry; we'll help you out with guides and plenty of assistance. You don't need experience, just the will to help out! We'll also provide awards, because everyone loves fake internet points. If you haven't heard, this is a particularly special month: it's NaCoWriMo! You heard me, it's National Novel Coppermind Writing Month! That's a thing, right? Well, maybe you've got a friend participating in NaNoWriMo, but writing a 50 thousand word novel in a month isn't your thing. We're here for you! We think more in terms of bytes rather than words of course, so anyone who contributes 50 thousand bytes (roughly 5 thousand words) in the month of November will get a super special NaCoWriMo award! Without further ado, here are our objectives for November. If you find something you'd like to help with, claim it here, and let us know if you have any questions! If nothing in the list below catches your eye, there are leftover objectives from previous months up for grabs in the claim spreadsheet. If you sign up for something, please say hi on Discord so that we can offer support and touch base with you! Larger Projects Let's start with some larger projects. These objectives will definitely require some research and a good bit of writing. Anyone is welcome to take them--we just don't want you to feel like you've bitten off more than you can chew. 1. Vasher Vasher is one of the most interesting figures in the cosmere, and so there's naturally a LOT to say about him. His article particularly needs work done on the History section, though the whole thing needs a general facelift. This will require a lot of research! 2. Spook What better way to cap off your Halloween festivities than to work on the article for Spook?! His history section is short and the other major sections on his page are practically non-existent. Don't make the mistake of ignoring this guy! Spook deserves better! 3. Yeden If you thought Spook was the most overlooked member of Kelsier's crew, then you're probably forgetting about Yeden. Yeah, that guy was technically part of the crew too! Comes as no surprise that his article is mostly forgotten as well! The research on Yeden should be fairly straight forward, so this will mostly be a matter of fleshing out what's there. 4. Tindwyl This remarkable Terriswoman played a key role in Well of Ascension, and she deserves more credit for it than we're giving her. If you're a Tindwyl fan we could definitely use your help expanding her article. 5. VenDell This notable kandra doesn't make many appearances, but he plays an important role in Bands of Mourning and there's much more that needs to be said about him. If Era 2 Mistborn is more your speed then this character is a great option. 6. Pahn Kahl rebellion Let's change gears from Mistborn back to Warbreaker. The Pahn Kahl rebellion refers to the secret rebellion at the heart of Warbreaker's plot, and the article is… rough. We would really like to see a Bold individual Return to this article and write out the full narrative events of the rebellion. Smaller Tasks These are tasks that are much shorter and involve characters or topics that are minor. But, hey, minor things are important to have done too! Many of these articles are so short that they will not require separate sections. Research should be fairly straight forward. For short articles, include as much as you can possibly find about them. 1. Leshwi Sad to see so few Stormlight objectives? Here's your moment! Leshwi appears to be one of the more important Fused, especially for the ways she intersects with Moash, but she hasn't received much attention. We'd like to flesh her article out a bit more and get it out of stub status. 2. Gavinor This poor kid lost both of his parents and his throne in Oathbringer. Least we could do is give him a proper article, right? If you're the kind of person who feels like swears directed at Moash aren't good enough, this might be your next step. 3. Ien Ien didn't play a major role in Elantris, but there's more to say than the few lines we have. Raoden's faithful Seon deserves some more love. 4. Mare Mare is another Mistborn Era 1 character who hasn't seen much attention in far too long. We don't know a lot about her, but the article could definitely use some expansion. What's in it for me? We want to motivate people to help, so we will be giving out Coppermind awards for the users in November with the most edits, and we'll also give out awards if you contributed to one of these items. They'll be on your user page for all to see. This month there's also the esteemed NaCoWriMo award up for grabs! Here's a look at our top editors from the last two months! Most Contributions 1. LadyLameness - 37,592 bytes 2. Big Smooth - 34,905 bytes 3. Rebeca - 24,535 bytes 4. SpaceGodPerson - 20,961 bytes 5. SpaceGodPerson - 1 Major, 1 Minor 3. Ammcclain15 & Ladymxdnight - 0 Major, 2 Minor How do I to start? The most important thing is to be bold! Content is hard to write, but we can always format your stuff if it doesn't quite match conventions. MediaWiki notation may appear scary at first, but the best way to learn is through experience. If you're interested, we have lots of guides to help: Help:Contents. It does very much help to have ebooks so you can find instances of a specific word or person. (This is extremely helpful for minor characters). If you have physical books, ask us and we can help you determine this so you don't need to reread the whole text.     I realized the other day that identify with Eshonai quite a bit. The older-sibling mindset. Follows the rules. Takes responsibility. Emotionally stable. Loves maps and seeing the world. I'm not much of a warrior exactly, but then I'm also a non-warform human without Shardplate/blade... So maybe I'm basically male Eshonai in... nimbleform?

    He's mentioned speaking with the showrunner two or three times, but I really don't get the sense he will ever be asked to be heavily involved--much less than he would want to. Just my opinion. I definitely agree 6-9 on my list is the roughest part. I've seen a lot of people talk about cutting Bowl of Winds, and have even argued in favor of doing that myself. But now I'm not so sure. It plays into the books so deeply that I think cutting it would require a lot of significant changes. At the very least you have to find a way for Nynaeve/Elayne to "grow up" more between becoming Aes Sedai and everything that happens after the Bowl plot. Mat needs a LOT filled in. And the whole climate change issue is one of the key ways that you know the Last Battle is coming, in the middle books. Oh! And the Kin are a huge part of the finale. So it would take a lot of structural changes to cut that out. Meanwhile, the only major reason it isn't liked (in my opinion) is that it takes way too long to resolve. It starts in one book, they spend another whole book bumbling around, and then it resolves in a third book. The solution, as I see it, isn't to cut the plot. They just need to resolve it in one season (my outline gave it 1.5) and keep it more focused. You're right that they WILL have to cut things though. That's fine. Some of it will be sad to see go, but that's just how it needs to be for TV. Will definitely take creativity.

    Wouldn't be surprised if he got it mixed up, but my interpretation was that he meant what he said. He hasn't done this in the previous books, but I don't think it would be weird for him to take this route. For Eshonai to be "the interlude character" and for all of those interludes to be set in the past. Honestly, it seems like the best way to give those flashbacks without disrupting the main story. Flashbacks feel relatively seamless when they're from the perspective of a main character anyways. I figure Eshonai flashbacks randomly scattered through the main story would feel awfully out of place. So this is a perfect solution for that problem.

    I figure they're looking at the LotR movies and GoT and speculating that there's actually a respectable market for quality fantasy movies/television. So they're taking a gamble and diving in completely. I imagine LotR is meant to be a solid place to start. If it fails they'll surely call this whole idea a failure and scrap future plans. But if it's successful, I guess they want to have something ready so that they can expand and take over the market further. So that's what WoT is for. Just my speculation.

    Welcome @Hordolur! Reading order is very flexible. For those main series, you don't necessarily have to read in that order. Some people prefer to start with Warbreaker or Mistborn as Elantris is generally not a favorite. Some people prefer to read both Mistborn Eras one after the other. The only very strong piece of advice I'd give you is to read Warbreaker before Stormlight, but even that isn't essential. For shorter stories... Emperor's Soul, Sixth of the Dusk, and Shadows for Silence may be read at any time. They don't have particularly strong connections with other stories. Emperor's Soul is often recommended as a good starting point for the Cosmere. Otherwise, I think most people tend to read these last--after they've read the main book/series. Hope of Elantris should be read after Elantris. Eleventh Metal can be read anytime, but better to read it after you've read the first Mistborn book. Allomancer Jak should be read after Mistborn Era 1. Probably best to at least read Alloy of Law first. Secret History should at least be read after Hero of Ages (after Mistborn Era 1). Most people would recommend reading it after Bands of Mourning. Edgedancer is a Stormlight novella. Read it after Words of Radiance and before Oathbringer. I think that's everything...

    Like Voidus says, we're dealing with two different "fuel" sources and two different (well, several different) powers. So it's all comparing apples to oranges. Like asking if a gasoline-fueled motorcycle has the same "burn rate" as an electric scooter. You could maybe set up a very specific test, to compare two specific powers. For example, Push a coin straight up and Lash a coin straight up, measure how much metal/Stormlight was used in each case, and compare the potential energy delivered to each coin? But even that isn't a great comparison. Part of the problem I suppose is that Allomancy tends to have a "normal" burn rate. You can flare your metals, but otherwise there's a natural burn rate that you fall into when using the power. So comparing burn rates between metals is just a matter of comparing how much mass is used when burning at this natural rate. Surgebinding isn't really like this. The power doesn't really have an off/on state, where you're using Stormlight at a normal rate or your not using it at all. On one hand, you use Stormlight in discrete amounts. (a Basic Lashing on this object uses X units of Stormlight, a Full Lashing on this object uses Y units of Stormlight) On the other hand, Stormlight is constantly leaking from you. Neither of these is really comparable to the burn rate you have with Allomancy. Also, this isn't a BIG spoiler, but I don't think it's revealed until sometime in Words of Radiance:

    OB chapter 62: "She’d managed to glimpse some hungerspren around a refugee on their way. Oddly, those didn’t look any different. Why?" OB chapter 72: "Hungerspren buzzed about the heads of the people, like black specks, or little flies of the type you could find sometimes on rotting plants." Seems like the hungerspren in Kholinar didn't look any different for whatever reason, and the description of flies matches in each case. So the only thing off is the color. There's a quote in Edgedancer that also calls them brown flies. It's possible that the color is an error, but it's possible that they're a dark enough brown that they simply look black at a distance?

    I agree that Rhythm of the Lost could work as the title of a NEW in-world book. If Venli were to sit down and write a book about her people, that would make a great title.

    Division My thinking was that Investiture supplies the activation energy. Probably not something you meant to convey with the metaphor though. Tension and Cohesion This is probably a difference in my technical background, but I want to just sweep the chemistry under the rug for these. With Division we're clearly supposed to be breaking chemical bonds, but the lack of energy being released here feels weird to me. Like you say, it would just be Division with more restrictions I guess? So I wave goodbye to the chemistry, turn off the electron microscopes, and just say we're directly playing with the forces between atoms. Making it so that their bonds (as they are) are more or less stiff than "normal". (so we're getting into this kind of complicated stuff) With Tension, from an engineer's perspective... we're playing with the stiffness tensor of a material. The Young's modulus (shear modulus, bulk modulus, etc.) We're changing the material's "spring constant" as used in Hooke's law. Steel normally has an elastic modulus of 29,000,000 psi, meaning if you want to stretch a 1 square inch rod by 1% then you need to apply 290,000 pounds of force. With Cohesion you could increase this, so that your steel beams sag less. Or you could increase it, so that you can easily bend and stretch it with your own hands. And Cohesion would be pretty similar. Instead of just increasing/decreasing those variables, you're playing with the shape of the stress-strain curve. Ultimately what that lets you do is adjust the point of elastic or plastic failure. This would let you take something as strong as steel and deform it (permanently) with very little force. Or you could take a rubber band and make it ridiculously strong; it would still stretch like a rubber band (stiffness control is Tension), but it would stretch a ridiculous amount before failing. All of that said... I'm skeptical that Brandon has these principles in his head, guiding how these Surges will work. Time will tell whether we can squint our eyes and say these are close enough... or whether those powers are too unrealistic/inconsistent to say this about them. Notably, I don't know how to reconcile this with Khriss's terminology of "Strong and Soft Axial Interconnections". I think Brandon has used similar terminology once or twice, though I skimmed the referenced WoBs again and didn't see it. Those terms are hard to speculate on because they don't have any readily apparent real-world meaning that I can see. And it wouldn't be the first time that I thought, "Khriss, are you sure this is the right term for this?" @Leuthie there's a comment from Peter that "axi" has a specific cosmere meaning, though it doesn't seem to be in Arcanum. I believe it's in the OB typo thread, because someone reported that the proper plural of "axis" is "axes", and Peter basically said, "Yes, but it's not that."

    I figure that it's got to be either (1) some ancient listener song or (2) something new that Venli will write. I'm skeptical of the second, since we just did that with Oathbringer, and it's hard to speculate on the title of a book she might write. For listener songs, Song of Secrets seems mostly likely of those we know about. But there could be others. Venli's mother is probably still out there, and I think it would be cool if we got something from her. I'm not fond of the Dawnsong idea. It sounds on-point in terms of potential content, but it sounds too... soft? It sound like the title for a book about a girl and her horse. I agree that the "of" usage in titles is heavy, but I can't think of another way to title something after a listener song. We just had Oathbringer, and book 5 was going to be Stones Unhallowed, so maybe another "of" title wouldn't be so bad for book 4? My BIGGEST concern with Song of Secrets? We already have an SOS with Shadows of Self! This could get confusing...

    I like Alyssa's Nightblood the best by far. Michael's came across as almost goofy to me. Alyssa's is more childlike. But I'm confused by the Lightsong comment. Alyssa's Lightsong didn't have the surfer dude Lightsong. That was the other version of the audiobook, by some other guy, from what I understand.

    I think I figured it out somewhere in the middle. Or I guess it seemed pretty obvious the whole time, but I was relatively young and I didn't know how the main character could possibly be someone as awful as the Dragon was supposed to be? I definitely think the show would do well to make it more of a mystery until they reach the Eye. Packing the first two books into one season sounds like far too much would need to be cut and reworked, especially given how much groundwork you need to lay. Might be able to combine books 2 and 3 though. Game of Thrones got 8 seasons and this is based on far more content, so I'm going to assume we're working with 10 seasons. You could probably make 9 work well enough. Just 8 would be hard. Plot needs lots of re-shuffling mid-series so the book correlations at that point become more fuzzy. I lost steam around seasons 7/8/9. Some of what I said might need to be spread out more or generally reworked. Season 1 = Eye of the World This is pretty straightforward. Season 2 = Great Hunt This is pretty straightforward. Season 3 = Dragon Reborn This is pretty straightforward. Season 4 = Shadow Rising + Fires of Heaven Resolve time in the Waste sooner and get them back to the west. Spread out Two Rivers conflict over the season. Tower splits and the rebels form. Girls do their thing in Tanchico faster and reach Salidar. Season 5 = Lord of Chaos + Crown of Swords Rand lays plans against Sammael and takes care of business, less time-wasting with Min. LoC finale as some mid-season spice. Egwene and Mat go to Salidar. Bowl of Winds plot commences. Season 6 = Path of Daggers + Winter's Heart + Crossroads of Twilight Egwene gets the rebels moving to Tar Valon and is captured. Bowl of Winds resolves early. Elayne starts doing Andor stuff. Mat recovers and leaves with Tuon. Nynaeve and Rand fix saidin in the finale. Perrin sent for Masema, Faile captured. Season 7 = leftovers from previous + Knife of Dreams Mat and Tuon travel and reach the Band. Rand recovers, loses his hand, and starts getting dark. Perrin saves Faile in the finale. Egwene in the White Tower. Elayne becomes queen and deals with Black Ajah. Season 8 = Gathering Storms / Towers of Midnight Darth Rand, with Veins of Gold as the finale. Egwene becomes Amyrlin. Mat travels, Tuon leaves at some point. Perrin travels? Season 9 = Gathering Storms / Towers of Midnight Jesus Rand starts setting things up for the Last Battle. Mat does things in Caemlyn and rescues Moiraine in the finale. Perrin clashes with White Cloaks and becomes super-wolf. Egwene? Elayne? Season 10 = Memory of Light This is pretty straightforward.

    Message Joe ST your Coppermind username and ask for Editor rights. There are some things, like creating pages, that accounts can't do by default. (to prevent spam issues) You don't think the template is clear enough? I think we're trying to walk the line between "a clear explanation that something needs to be done" and "something that doesn't look super ugly". More explanation of what to do would probably start to look more sloppy. It says "Error: missing reference description, click to import." I can't think what else needs to be said beyond, "This is an error. Click here to fix it." I suppose it's confusing in your case, since it won't let you create the page.
