Kelsier nodded. “And New York?” CR: Mystic smiled, and began laying out place settings at the table. She followed this up with a pitcher of chilled juice, another of milk, and a pot of coffee.

Kelsier smiled. “That wasn’t so hard, was it? Now, tell me about Tennessee.” CR: Mystic finished frying the eggs and sausages, laying them to the side. She sliced the toasted baguettes in half and slathered butter on each. She laid these slices on plates, then spooned on the eggs and sausages. From the icebox she took a head of lettuce, a yellow pepper, and some cucumbers, which she quickly turned into a salad. A drizzle of hollandaise completed the dish. ”Help me bring these to the table?” She asked Lilli.

Kelsier stroked her feathers gently, his face suddenly hard. “As I said, no masks, no deceptions. And no more games. Where are you from?” He raised his arm and Verity soared across the space between him and Charlie, settling on the other man’s shoulder. A soft rhythm beat against Kelsier, emanating from the bird. CR: Mystic headed over to the ice box, pulling out two baguettes. She walked to the cooking area, turning on the heating medallion. The sliced baguettes went face down on top, and she began scrambling an egg and cooking sausage. Rahasy pulled over a gemstone and a loop, making notations in Artisans’ script as he studied the cut and hue. Nearby, Arcane was transcribing symbols from a damaged stone cylinder. Across the room, Écho carefully disposed of her slide, before taking a petridish and working on creating a new one. Trésor smiled reassuringly at Hoblim, her attention focused on the door. A patterned knock indicated the arrival of Fouet and Braiser. Cautiously, Trésor allowed them in, then quickly sealed the door behind them.

Kelsier nodded sympathetically as Prière reentered the cellar. “We do what we have to, right? In service to the cause.” He raised his arm, glancing over at the priest. Priére gave a slight nod as Verity soared across the room, landing on Kelsier’s shoulder. She was a large bird with a golden head and black and gold banded wings. She settled as a heavy weight on his shoulder. Her bond, returned to him, immediately flared to life.

Kelsier sighed, then flicked his nose. “Hey! I’m just trying to have a friendly conversation while my man gets out of surgery. He took the bullets for the girl. She got off without a scratch. Why’d you want to kill her anyway?”

“Perhaps,” Kelsier said. “But I don’t think they have those anymore.” So there was a suicide plan. The question was whether or not it had been activated. He flared his steel, allowing him to watch the flow of blood through Charlie’s body. He seemed fine. Still, better to be safe. ”Priére,” Kelsier said, glancing over at the priest. “Go fetch Verity for me, will you?” And pick up the antidote kit while you’re at it. And the emergency aid kit. Fabriel? Priére sent. Kelsier considered, then sent his assent. In aluminum. We can’t afford to waste Stormlight. It’s too hard to transport. He turned back to Charlie as Priére left the cellar. “You don’t think your family would want you back?”

“I’m fairly certain psychology there has improved beyond that,” Kelsier said lightly. “So what happens if I force you to answer a question your boss forbade?”

Écho returned to her studies at the microscope as Mystic and Arcane entered the tent. “Chance hasn’t sent me anything,” she told Écho, who nodded without looking up. Arcane glanced briefly at Lilli, then turned away. A swirling white ribbon extended from a pouch on his belt, lifting a handful of files from a high shelf. The stream deposited the pile on a desk, then tugged open a drawer. It’s power spent, it fell like black ash into the open receptacle. For a brief moment, before Arcane slammed the drawer shut, a blue-violet glow shone bright.

“And did he ask you not to tell me about your home?” CR: Rahasy scowled, gathering up his papers. Écho shot Lilli a glare. “I said: Don’t TOUCH.”

Kelsier nodded understandingly. “You miss it.” CR: The papers were covered in multicolored dots. Rahasy glowered at Lilli. “Oranges girl! Have you no respect for privacy?”

“Like yours?” He asked, allowing the longing to remain. “I’d love to see it.” That wasn’t a lie. He’d gotten a glimpse once, years before, when Brandon put him in that cage match and he had every intention of exploring it properly someday.

“But you can tell me about it.” He allowed a note of longing to slip in to his voice. “I’ve heard that they have towers hundreds of stories high, all made of steel. It sounds like a counshot’s dream.”

Kelsier sighed, then reached up and removed his glasses. “No masks,” he murmured. “No deceptions.” Then he smiled. “So, tell me about New York. I’ve heard quite a bit about it.”

“Here?” Kelsier asked, spinning the miniature spear. “Or Silverlight?” Lightly, he soothed the man’s resistance and encouraged his responsiveness. Écho nodded curtly. “Keep an eye on her,” she ordered Mystic. ”Yes, Babsk,” the woman replied.

What I meant was the mismatched pair didn’t seem to work very well.

“Ah,” Kelsier said lightly, looking bored. “So he’s an immigrant? Like you?” CR: Écho turned from her microscope, frowning at the newcomer. “Who is she?” “Master Thaidakar as led us to watch her,” Rahasy explained. “She’s being targeted.” Écho sighed. “Stay near me girl. And don’t touch anything.” Trésor shrugged. “Master Thaidakar didn’t say. And I’m assuming the latter is why he ran off. If your in danger then she needs to be returned here as quickly as possible - assuming she’s alive to return.”

“We will do our best to protect them,” Trésor assured her. “And you are here because you are in danger.” ”Not yours, I take it,” Kelsier said lazily. “New York?” CR: Mystic led her through the research camp, to the central building. Écho stood there, studying Sand under a microscope.

Trésor shut the basement door, pressing a series of symbols to seal it. “We should be safe here,” she assured the trio. “There’s plenty of food and water down here.” Kelsier smiled. “Charlie! Of course. You’re another one from Brandon’s world right? Utah?” CR: Mystic maneuvered the boat back to the canal. As Rahasy cut the engine, she expertly tied the boat to the pier. “Come,” she told Lilli. “You need to meet my babsk.”

Another Kandra’s blessing doesn’t really substitute. We see that in BoM. The Kandra tried it and it didn’t work.

“Take her to the base,” Kelsier ordered. “Someone’s already killed her once today; I’d rather they didn’t do it twice.” Rahasy nodded, starting the motor as Mystic turned the helm. Kelsier watched a moment longer, than entered the cellar. The aluminum would shield them from unwanted eyes. Sazed’s, for example. Priére bowed deeply as the Survivor dropped lightly in to the cellar. “My Lord.” Kelsier nodded, then turned his brilliant, dangerous smile on the Assassin. “So how do you like your accommodations? Priére treating you well? I have to compliment your shooting; the girl survived just fine, so no harm, no foul, right?” For a given definition of survival, anyway. He grinned, settling himself backward in a chair. “So just answer some questions and I’ll be happy to let you go Mr.... What did you say your name was again?”

“Your ride,” Kelsier said cheerfully. “I don’t only have people in the physical realm.” He smiled at the Ghostbloods. “Keep an eye on her, alright?” Mystic nodded. “Of course, Master Thaidakar.” Rahasy motioned to the bench in the center of the boat. “Get in. Colors girl, don’t dawdle. We don’t have all day.” Priére continued to ignore the assassin.

Trésor stood guard, drawing an aluminum revolver, as she waited for everyone to get to the basement. Elsewhere: Priére didn’t bother to answer. ”Pretty sure you’re not a day old,” Kelsier said, grinning. “And death has its benefits. You won’t be aging anymore. With practice you’ll be able to look however you want, too.” In the CR: Chance fluttered down to Mystic’s shoulder as she approached - “Master Thaidakar?” She asked, startled. Her master’s flame was distinct, glowing with the brilliant light of the Investiture suffusing his essence. ”Who’s the girl?” Rahasy wondered, as he turned off the motor, bringing the boat to a halt.
