  1. Kelsier smiled grimly as the coin hit the glass. Considering what those were intended to prevent, a mere coin was nothing. He flaired his bronze, focusing on the odd bronze pulses of the worldhoppers. “Across the street,” he ordered his crew. “On the roof. And be careful.” He knew they’d know what he meant. “I’ll keep in contact.” Trésor and Braiser nodded in unison, then headed toward the front door. The coinshot burned his steel as he cracked the door. Aiguilles and Foullet slipped out the side. Across the street, Roues pulled himself to the roof.
  2. Thaidakar prefers statues. Wit thinks himself best described as a surrealist abstraction created by throwing rotten fruit and... censored... matter at a silk canvas.
  3. And that was in the above answer. You are either in or out of the bubble. Not halfway.
  4. “Good question,” Kelsier said cheerfully. “Ask Insight.”
  5. “Trésor,” Kelsier said abruptly, “we’re about to get another visitor. Be ready to pick them up. Braiser, you’ll go with her. I don’t want anyone working alone until this is settled.”
  6. Kelsier leaned back, watching the kids carefully. It was up to them to work this out; he’d only step in if he had to. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to help, of course.
  7. We also have terrible roads and idiotic traffic laws. Not to mention bikers and pedestrians who never follow the laws and truck drivers who won’t use truck routes. Oh, and the DoT intentionally messes with the lights and keeps blocking emergency routes with concrete sidewalks or narrowing streets to the point that fire engines can’t turn. And there is NEVER enough parking. Between which you have to be A: a very good driver and B: a very aggressive one. Defensive driving in NYC means being aggressive and knowing when to take a risk and knowing when following the traffic law is stupid and WILL get you killed. (Cough... Gowanus to the Brooklyn Battery... cough) It also means learning to ignore curses and horns. Being non-aggressive is more likely to get you into an accident, honestly. Try driving the Jackie sometime. Two tiny, narrow lanes and multiple hairpin turns in succession. Or the aforementioned Gowanus, where it’s safer to enter long before its legal to do so! The problem tends to occur when we take this kind of driving elsewhere, where being aggressive isn’t safer or when tourists come to New York and fail to realize that aggressive = safe here.
  8. I’m aware. Things have been a bit crazy, but I’ll try and work on it tonight. Edit: because this will come up in the rap: Hoid tells Kelsier, “you did what I needed you to do,” at the Well. Kell brought down the TFE and his actions led to Rashek’s death - which opened the door for Ruin being freed. Hoid leaves the Well, which he calls “Ati’s prison.” He does not tell Vin or Saze about the Well. Later on he has an opportunity to tell Vin or Saze about the earring. He doesn’t. And we know that he wasn’t planning on telling her in Fadrex. We also know he wanted Kell out of the way. Which leads to a very interesting conclusion when you put it all together: Hoid could have stopped events with Ruin or prevented things from getting so bad. And he doesn’t. Why? That’s an interesting question someone should ask Brandon. (I will, if I ever get the chance.) Kelsier is assuming Hoid wanted Scadrial destroyed and Ruin free. He may well be wrong, but I figured I’d explain why he thinks that first. @Ghanderflaffle I wrote the roast, but I may put it up late. Edit: up now. Note: Brandon says Hoid is a favorite when asked. Unprompted he’s said that Kelsier is one of his favorites. He has also said that Hoid is his hardest character to write and the the character he finds most annoying. Characters Brandon has said are his favorite: Lightsong, Vin, Saze, Dalinar, Steris and Jasnah (female characters only). And yes, I spent a ridiculous amount of time going through WoB to find that out.
  9. Kelsier sighed internally, and soothed Faith’s disgust and horror, rioting her relief instead. It would be easier to keep the kids safe if they got along, and Faith’s seeming rejection - even if that wasn’t what it was - was not conducive to that end.
  10. Kelsier laughed. “Neither do I. I don’t know where most things are in your world. It’s the culture that tends to be more important than location for who people are.” He gently stroked Verity’s feathers, listening to the soft pulse of the bond between them.
  11. “Her name is Verity,” Kelsier told him. “And the United States is a federation of semi-autonomous Sovereign States unified under a Federal government. The States have their own Constitutions, their own armies, their own taxation and penal systems. Each has a government of its own, its own flag and its own bird. More importantly,” his eye narrowed, “each has its own unique culture. ”United States refers to the Nation as a whole, or the Federal government in particular. It’s not a country. It’s composed of fifty semi-autonomous countries. If you want to know who someone is, you want to know which specific country they came from as opposed to the federation as a whole.”
  12. “The best lies are true,” Kelsier said, scratching gently below Verity’s beak. “The person who shot her came from your world. Tennessee. He shot her as an experiment to see if she would become a Shadow.”
  13. Kelsier knocked rhythmically on the cellar door. A moment later Fouet opened the trap cautiously. “Master Thaidakar,” the tineye said, poorly disguising her relief. “The matter is done then?” Kelsier shook his head. “It’s just beginning.”
  14. Kelsier and Aiguilles followed Lilli into the house. Aiguilles sealed the door as Kelsier headed toward the cellar. “I think it’s safe for your friends to come out now. You’ll have dinner and then we can talk,”
  15. Kelsier nodded, flaring his steel and bronze. He wasn’t so much looking for where things were, but where they weren’t. Aluminum didn’t have steel lines, but everything else did. With practice you could learn to see the gaps. It was with some relief that he reached the house, nodding to Aiguilles. The tailor was standing at the door, eyes wary. Verity was with him, and she flew to Kelsier with a delighted cry. ”Any word from my brother?” Kelsier asked as he undid the door’s protections. ”I’m afraid not sir,” the tailor replied. Kelsier nodded. “Makes sense. He’ll likely meet me alone.” With a soft click the door opened, and the Survivor gestured to Lilliana. “After you.”
  16. A few minutes later they landed in a deserted alley near the guest house. “Stay close,” Kelsier warned, setting Lilli down and pulling on his gloves. “I don’t want to risk you being attacked again.”
  17. He grinned, then sent them both soaring into the air. Tapping speed, they flew back to Elendel.
  18. Kelsier shook his head. “Sorry, kid. But we’ll move a lot faster if I carry you.” He smirked. “Unless you’ve suddenly learned to fly faster than the speed of sound, of course.”
  19. Kelsier smiled reassuringly, before wading into the pool. He stood in the center for a moment, cradling Lilliana, and then - They were back in the Physical Realm.
  20. Kelsier sighed, lifting her in his arms like a child. “I’ll transition us. The first time, as your body’s restored, can be a bit... odd.” To say the least.
  21. He nodded, uncharacteristically somber. “You’re welcome.” Then he smiled brightly again. “Ready to swim in Saze’s pool?”
