“And what do I plan to do with you?” He asked, returning his attention to the Inquisitor. His smile faded as he met her eyes. “I don’t intend to control you Marie. I’m not Harmony. I had to watch my brother suffer under Ruin’s Command and I couldn’t do a rusting thing! ”But I can do something here. ”I’m not offering you a chance to kill wantonly. Even I don’t, though I understand the urge.” He smiled darkly. “There’s something fun about murder, isn’t there? Holding the power of life and death, watching the light leave your enemies eyes. Seeing your foes suffer and knowing yourself the cause. Believe me, I know. ”But indulging in that doesn’t help my cause. So what I’m offering is a chance to cause Ruin to our enemies. There are other worlds out there, each with their own forms of Investiture. And some of those want nothing more than to see us destroyed. ”So that’s my offer. I’ll give you an objective and you’ll be free to carry it out as you choose. No mind control. No duralumin. And if you ever want to walk away, you can. If I ever think you’re endangering this world I’ll just have you killed. But if you work with me to Preserve it, I’ll help you. And so will my people.” He smiled again, warm and bright. “Think about it, alright?” Eryn sighed as Zola continued to whimper despite the vague sense of peace and calm permeating the room. The Sovereign was near then, but he was either distracted, wanted Eryn to deal with this on her own, or didn’t want to strangle the child’s emotions. It really didn’t matter. He was clearly not going to be of any further help. ”You had better have the chocolate,” Eryn mumbled, before beginning to hum again, gently stroking the child’s brow.

Eryn quickly stood up, settling herself beside the child. She began to him, stroking Zola’s brow. In the hall Kelsier frowned, glancing over at the room. Gently, he reached out soothing Zola’s fear.

He grinned mischievously at her. “Well, I could always ask. Or annoy Saze until he agrees. Or cause enough trouble elsewhere that I can sneak you past his range while he’s distracted. Admittedly the last would be the most fun and the first the easiest.” He shrugged. “Saze doesn’t actually like controlling you.”

The Soul, if it exists, is something of the Beyond and the God Beyond and has nothing whatsoever to do with Adonalsium and the Shards thereof.

So what is Taravangian's motivation now?
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Alich's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, my great-grandparents liked to look at us and say, “Hitler didn’t win,” which probably explains a bit. Hatred is definitely a factor, although there are many, many other elements too. I grew up with that implicit understanding that my very existence was a form of revenge and that some things could never be forgiven. It’s a very hard thing to describe if you don’t grow up with it. -
“Hello Marie,” the Survivor responded. “Thought about my offer?”

This is an in-world theory. There are others. Humans on Scadrial are sapient due to a piece of Preservation inside them. By your understanding Scadrian humans lack souls as their sapience is entirely due to Investiture, despite having physical bodies. While a valid theory, I would disagree with this. Personally, I think all sapient beings have souls. Anti-light kills people whose primary being is Cognitive, just like swords kill people whose primary being is Physical. Unless those people can find a way to anchor themselves as a pseudo-Cognitive being, of course, which I don’t think changes/removes/copies their soul. But that’s my theory.

So what is Taravangian's motivation now?
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Alich's topic in Stormlight Archive
There was nothing honorable about it though. If anything the closest thing I’ve seen in the Cosmere is Kelsier’s refusal to let TLR take his ability to smile away. It was THAT kind of hatred. A refusal to be broken by evil. To succeed if only so they could spit in the eye of their would be destroyer. To thrive in spite of their oppression. To smile despite the the darkness. Revenge born of living life to its fullest. Of surviving all attempts at their destruction. Of rebuilding from ash if only to prove that they had NOT been destroyed. That they lived! That they remembered! That they would never forget and never forgive! The best form of vengeance is the beat of my heart, the breath in my lungs, the blood in my veins and the life of my children and the names of the martyrs we carry. Their is nothing of Honor in that. Preservation, maybe, as the form of vengeance is directed at survival, remembrance, and endurance. But then you may as well ask why Odium’s form of hatred is so Ruinous? If it’s separated from the other attributes then why should it want to destroy at all? That’s Ruin, not Odium. So something else is going on. Hatred is just an emotion and can be used for good or bad. I think the issue may be that people perceive hatred/anger as bad and don’t see how it can be a good thing or used constructively. It’s associated with destruction, so maybe that shapes the manifestation of the Intent. -

Kingsdaughter613 replied to Alich's topic in Stormlight Archive
What’s interesting to me is that hatred should also include endurance, persistence, revolution and reconstruction. Hatred can be a great motivator for rebuilding when you have nothing left. It just has to be channeled right. So it feels odd to me that the constructive elements of hatred are absent. -
Very true. This is an entirely philosophical discussion.

Ah, okay. I think I’ve been misunderstanding the term. I assumed demi = half/lesser, like it usually does. Thanks for the clarification!

Brandon says she heteromantic. Being interested in people romantically doesn’t mean you’re interested in all people that way. Romantic attraction generally requires more than pants and/or a skirt. Either way, she’s certainly not aromantic.

“Sorry,” he shrugged. “Ganache only gave me enough for Zola. Annoying the chocolatier has consequences.” He grinned mischievously at Adilie. “We could always go up and ask her for more.”

I suggest you first go complain in any and all topics discussing Thaidakar, the Ghostbloods, Cognitive Shadows, Vessels, Shards and Connection. Because those are bringing up unspoilered secrets from Secret History, released in 2016. Also the meme thread, the fake spoilers thread, the reactions thread, and several dozen others... TFE, in contrast, was released in 2006. Complaining that I mentioned TFE here is a little ridiculous when many more recent books are being discussed sans spoilers.

“Several,” the Survivor told her. “Though Ene is the only one I keep with me regularly. The others get transferred among my crew.” He took the cup of hot milk and added the chocolate powder, stirring it in.

Eryn pressed a gentle kiss to Zola’s forehead. “Goodnight child.” She turned down the lamp to a dim glow, then settled herself in a nearby chair to await the Sovereign’s return.
