@AonEne Kelsier promptly pulled the coins back before they could get anywhere near the horse. “I told you: let him run. You can kill him when he gets to his destination - and whoever else is there too. Except Meens - he’s mine.” @Condensation Eryn began humming again as she fluffed up the pillows. “Wish to talk of dream? Or just sleep?”

Considering Khriss and Kell got along fairly well, I’m rather suspicious of her interest in Hemalurgy. I wonder who her study partner might be...

Kelsier smiled grimly. “Oh, believe me I want to. And I’m afraid you’ll have to share or I’ll just steal the whole. Coming?” The last was thrown over his shoulder as he pushed off the ground, following the horse and rider.

“Although not as well,” Kelsier noted. “You want to aim higher, try to reach the solar plexus.” ”Too easy?” He shrugged. “Besides, I seem to recall telling you that I’m not fond of forcing people to obey me. Particularly when they’re going to do what I want on their own.” ”That he will take care of fire,” Eryn told her.

He shrugged, then soared into the air Pushing on the trace metals. He could see the man fleeing on a horse now and ... was there a Connection there? He often tapped a general Connection to his followers and he could feel that now tying him to the people in the town - and the man fleeing it. So much the better. He stored the Connection, then compounded it. Like the string in the maze of Ishathon, it would lead him to where he needed to go. He landed beside Marie, pointing. “That way. But we shouldn’t get too close; we want the man he answers to.”

Kelsier emerged from the cellar, brushing stray bits of dirt from his blond hair. “Ene’s following the shooter,” he told Marie, stepping up behind her. “Hopefully he’ll lead us to his boss. The arsonist is already dead.” He paused, then added, “oh, and the fire’s out.”

Kelsier abruptly stiffened as his tin enhanced ears caught the sound of a bullet. A moment later Ene soared threw the window. “You saw it?” He asked. ”No,” the Seon said, “but it came from below.” ”Follow them,” he ordered. Ene bobbed in mimicry of a nod, then soared off. He nodded. “Ganache,” he said, speaking in her own language to avoid upsetting Zola further, “there’s smoke in the building. I’ll go take care of it, but be ready in case you need to leave.” Eryn nodded, abruptly alert. “I will be.” She turned to Zola. “Do not be afraid, child. Sovereign take care of fire. Drink chocolate, now.” The Survivor smiled before leaping out the window. “Good.” Then he burnt steel, landing lightly on the ground below. He switched to tapping, racing through the inn faster than the eye could see. He used his steelsight to find the hidden cellar, the one that shouldn’t have been in this building. Smugglers, he thought in amusement. He burnt Bendalloy, slid the hidden door open, and entered the basement, shutting the door firmly behind him. The fire was burning nicely he noted, as he entered the cellar, consuming the body of a man he assumed to be the arsonist. Fortunately, there were ways to put out fires and this cellar wasn’t essential for the building’s stability. Oh, and Scadrian soil had a lot of trace metals in it. He flaired pewter and tapped iron and Pulled, mist swirling up around him before dissolving in the heat of the fire. The walls buckled, then collapsed under the wait of the soil. The fire abruptly went out as it was smothered beneath the dirt. Kelsier grumbled under his breath as he Pushed the dirt away from him and off him in a wide circle. He kicked out a few flames that had managed to avoid the initial smothering, then Pushed most of the dirt back behind where the walls had been. Then he went looking for Ene. Zola had been in this building, along with many of his innocent followers. Well, relatively innocent. Either way, whoever this Meens was he was going to pay. Kelsier smiled and there was nothing joyous about it at all.

He smiled warmly at her. “Girl after my own heart.” He lowered his voice, leaning in to whisper conspiratorially. “Thievery is best form of flattery, you know. But don’t tell your Mom; she doesn’t believe me.” Eryn shook her head, bemused. “Believe. But could just ask.”

Thanks for the summon! Just to note: “like the psychopathy-adjacent ability to detach from others’ pain enough to perform surgery” Not “like.” Many law-abiding psychopaths are excellent, high risk surgeons for EXACTLY that reason. In fact, it’s one of the more likely places to find a neurological psychopath. A neurological psychopath is not the same thing as a criminal one. Kelsier actually does pass the American PCL-R, meaning he would not be diagnosed as a psychopath. (The European cut off is lower and he’s right on the verge there.) Nor does he have ASPD. I would diagnose him as a clinical Narcissist though, although he’s not nearly as severe as some. He just happens to fit all the diagnostic criteria, lol! I love Kell. He’s a great person and a fascinating person. But he’s not a good one, not naturally. He wants to be though and I think he is - slowly - working on becoming one. Claiming he’s evil because he’s a psychopath is like claiming Steris is a ‘cold fish’ because she has Aspergers. Kelsier was born the way he is. Brandon has stated that it’s a difference in neurology, not a sociological development. He literally cannot change what he is - nor should he. Nothing stops a psychopath from being a decent person except their own choices. And they can always choose. There’s an ancient Jewish philosophical teaching that, interestingly, talks about exactly this. It discusses how nearly every attribute (with the exception of pride) can be utilized for good. The Rabbis describe a man who is born with a desire for blood shed. Such a man, they say, can become one of three things: a murderer, and animal slaughterer, or a Sandek. A murderer takes the desire for blood and turns it into a means of harming others. An animal slaughterer turns it into a career and a means of providing an important service to his community. A Sandek elevates the same desire for blood into the spiritual by performing circumcision and bringing the next generation into the community. (Please don’t debate the ethics of circumcision; the point is the Rabbis saw this as an important spiritual act.) So here we have something we instinctively see as bad: the desire to kill. And yet that desire can be turned into something beautiful and holy. And this is reflected in the real world. Some psychopaths becoming cruel criminals, genuinely evil men. Some become soldiers or cut throat business men, turning that same trait into a career. And some become surgeons, saving countless lives. Psychopathy is just a trait and can be used for good or ill. It’s up to the individual to channel it for good. And Kelsier, per Brandon, does try to channel himself at what he perceives as good causes. He doesn’t always succeed, but the fact that he’s trying is what’s important. It’s not how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up. He wants to be good and - as this is Kelsier - he’s not about to stop just because it’s hard. Rusts, that’s probably half the reason he’s trying! Here’s a sketch of our favorite Fullborn psychopath to finish this post. First card of the Minor Arcana, let’s give it up for our Mistborn of Spears!

“Ganache makes good chocolate,” Kelsier agreed. ”Best in South,” Eryn said calmly. “Is why he recruited me. To provide chocolate.” Kelsier chuckled. “Which you then deprive me of.” Eryn mock glared at her master. “Don’t have to give. You steal. Know; I count.”

“Hey, now.” Kelsier gently swiped away the tear. “Don’t cry. Here,” he offered her the mug, “your mom made you some chocolate.” Eryn rubbed soft circles on the child’s back. “Is alright child. Are safe now. Safe here.”

Eryn nodded. “Yes, child. I am here.” Outside, Kelsier raised a hand in farewell to Marie and entered the room. Briefly he compounded his brass, raising his temperature high enough to reheat the mug. He put it on the nightstand, then settled himself on Zola’s other side. “I’m here too, kid.” ”Are late,” Eryn noted. He shrugged. “I ran into Marie. She wanted to talk, so I figured I’d oblige. Not too many people left from the Final Empire these days.”

Mistborn Tarot (Critique and Discuss)
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Kingsdaughter613's topic in Sanderson Fan Works
The Cosmere (The World) This card has several names, but is usually called the Cosmere. It represents Accomplishment, Integration and Travel. A certain organization whose name shall not be mentioned has its own name for this card. This card is sometimes called ‘The Worldhopper’ by those in the know. The final trump card, it counts as a bout when playing tarot. If the player also has the first trump (the Sovereign) and the thirteenth (the Survivor) then the thirteenth trump counts as an additional bout. This is referred to as ‘The Survivor’s Hand.’ A player may call the hand for additional points at the beginning of play. The design of this card is based off of the Lord Mistborn’s personal playing deck. Most Scadrians do not know the meaning of the symbols and have created their own symbology around them. It seems evident that the Lord Mistborn did know the meanings, however. Some versions of this card display the Lord Mistborn instead of the Survivor/Sovereign. Some Sliverist owned decks show Ironeyes or the Lord Ruler. Prior to the fall of the Final Empire, the card displayed a random male or female figure or the Lord Ruler. Regardless of the deck used The Survivor’s Hand may be called.
