  1. Not really. Kind of hard to when nobody posts for a week.
  2. Disclaimer: here, "cookie" is the code word for a hemalurgic spike. Only accept it if you're 100% that's what you want out of life.
  3. Welcome, welcome, Sean! It sounds like you're doing the exact same thing I did when I discovered how awesome Brandon's epic fantasy is. Make sure not to miss out on The Rithmatist, The Emperor's Soul, and the Alcatraz books. (If you didn't already have plans to read them, that is!) They are also awesome. (Of course they are; Brandon wrote them.) Some other Sharders will probably be in here shortly to bombard you with requests to join their guilds. Beware of the "cookies"; they're actually hemalurgic spikes.
  4. Dang. I won't be able to get out of work by 1 on Friday. Is your art posted in the gallery here?
  5. When you spend the majority of your evening waffling around on the 17th Shard instead of doing the absolutely essential homework that's due tomorrow.
  6. Hi Mark! Welcome to the forums Have you read any of Brandon's non-cosmere stuff? They are also awesome. (What else do you expect from Brandon, honestly?)
  7. What times and days will you be there? I'm going too and would love to see your stuff!
  8. "Come with me if you wanna not die!"
  9. Christina Perri's album "Head or Heart."
  10. I just finished Frozen Tides, the latest book in the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes. Sparks, it was awesome! But ARGH, cliffhanger ending. Again. Next I'm re-reading Firefight to prepare for the release of Calamity next week.
  11. I don't really know who I would cast as Abraham... Somebody suggested Nonso Anozie, and I like that idea. I haven't seen him in many things, but the roles I have seen him in were always gentlemanly, which seems to fit Abraham. I also like the previous suggestion of possibly Chris Pratt for Cody. He's a great comedian.
  12. Vampire octopuses love killing silly witches at gory everyday nuptials. Now you've put me in a mood for German words... SCHADENFREUDE
  13. I haven't even seen Snakes on a Plane, but it gets referenced enough that I understood that one. "In Chicago, you can't swing a cat without hitting an Irish goat (and angering the cat), but McAnally's place stands out from the crowd." "That's one small step for goat, one giant leap for goatkind."
  14. "I had heard of offices feeling like prisons, but in this case our prison felt, rather anticlimactically, like an office." - William Ritter, Jackaby "It makes me happy that an arm of the US government has, in some official capacity, issued an opinion on the subject of firing nuclear missiles at hurricanes." - Randall Munroe, What If? "No one takes you seriously when you're naked." - Kevin Hearne, Hunted "'Try no to look like that,' Ascher said under her breath, after we were in the elevator. 'Like what?' I asked. 'Like you're expecting ninjas to leap out of the trash cans. This is a party.' 'Everyone knows there's no such things as ninjas,' I scoffed. 'But it will be something. Count on it.'" - Jim Butcher, Skin Game
  15. I know Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Codex Alera have already been recommended, but I would also like to add that his newest novel, The Aeronaut's Windlass, is absolutely phenomenal--better than any of the Dresden Files, I would even say. I mean, just look at how beautiful the prose is: "The rapid winds and rising shrieks suddenly blended into a single harmonious tone. Lines in the rigging and the yards and the masts themselves quivered in time, and began giving off their own notes of music, in harmony with one another. As the speed increased, the chord rose and rose, and built and built, until it reached a crescendo of pure, eerie, inhuman fury. Grimm felt the music rise around him, felt the ship straining eagerly to her task, and his own heart raced in fierce exultation in time with her. Every line of the ship, every smudge upon her decks, every stain upon the leathers of his aeronauts leapt into his mind in vibrant detail. He could feel the ship's motion, forward and down, could feel the wind of her passage, could feel the rising terror of his crew. One of the men screamed--one of them always did--and then the entire crew joined in with Predator, shrieking their battle cries together with their ship's. The ship would not fail them--Grimm knew it; he felt it, the way he could feel sunlight on his face or the rake of wind in his hair." My full review of the book can be found here.
  16. Not to mention the plot twists in each book just get more and more mind-blowing. At the end of Skin Game, I seriously spent like a solid 5 minutes just grinning like a total lunatic and trying not to scream because it was so awesome. I also appreciate a good pun. That's why chemistry cat jokes crack me up--all those puns on element names.
  17. When you come across a short story titled "Upgrade" and immediately think of the Cybermen.
  18. "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse. Love that band.
  19. Rejiggering the Thingamajig and Other Stories by Eric James Stone. After I read his novel Unforgettable and thoroughly enjoyed it, I decided to go find more of his stuff. So far this collection of short stories is also very entertaining.
  20. I certainly recommend the Skulduggery Pleasant books, unless you're very sensitive to violence; they are rather gory. (I find it rather disturbing that the Orem library places them in the middle-grade section. o_O) I've read up through book 8 including the Maleficent Seven, so I think I've just got Armageddon Outta Here and The Dying of the Light left (both of which I have hardcopies sitting on my shelf). But as I said before, I really need to go back and just re-read the entire series so I actually know what's going on. I'm also with Kaymyth on her enthusiasm for the Dresden Files. I think some books are stronger than others, but overall the series is really good. The latest one, Skin Game, is easily my favorite, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Dead Beat.
  21. Kaz in Alcatraz vs the Shattered Lens (spoilered for largeness)
  22. When someone refers to Vin Diesel as "Vin" and you immediately think they're talking about the Mistborn books.
  23. "I'm so sure that a chasmfiend bookie would be toxic that I am confident I will not lose my big toe in this wager," Sunbird replies, flopping down on a beanbag to rest.
  24. I also think Liam Neeson would be a good pick for Prof. He has the ability to be the calm mentor-type character (see Star Wars Episode I), but he can also be totally intense. (See Taken.) However, I believe Jeremy Irons could also pull it off. I liked him as Brom in the Eragon movie (which IMO was ok as just a movie, but terrible as a book-to-movie adaptation), and I have this idea of Prof in my head that he's kind of tall and wiry like Jeremy Irons. As for David... I think Jay Baruchel would be perfect for the role. I know him best for his parts in The Sorcerer's Apprentice (alongside Nicolas Cage) and How to Train Your Dragon as Hiccup. He's really good at being endearingly awkward, so I think he would be a good match for David.
