Other books like Alcatraz
Sunbird replied to Lazarus52980's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
Yes! Brandon Mull! His writing is less crazy than that of Alcatraz, but he is also really creative with his magic. Both the Fablehaven and Beyonders series were fantastic, and I've been enjoying his Five Kingdoms books as well. Actually, if you want something by Brandon Mull that's crazy, try The Candy Shop War and its sequel, The Arcade Catastrophe. Magic candy makes for a lot of funny situations. -
Sunbird's head whips around as she hears "Cotton Eye Joe" begin to play. "Fantastic!" she says, grinning. "This is one dance I actually know!" She then proceeds to completely exhaust herself performing the energetic line dance. At the end of the song, she manages to stumble over to Chasmfiend, clutching at his sleeve in an attempt to keep him from making it to the kitchen. "Don't bake chasmfiend bookies," she gasps. "I'd wager my big toe they'll poison you."

And I will be dressed as Prof. I just need to do a little repair work on my tensors. And I'll probably be wearing an orange drawstring bag on my back.

I have classes and work, so I'll only be able to make it for the later parts of the day Thursday and Friday, but I definitely plan to attend the "Sociopaths and Psychopaths" panel Saturday morning because Dan Wells will be on it. (I'm a little crazy about his John Cleaver books.) Other than that, I still need to figure out which panels sound the most interesting to me. A friend of mine, L. Palmer, is going to be on several panels, so I'll definitely be attending at least one of hers.

Maybe we could do Tuesday or Thursday, then? But if it's Thursday the 11th, I will have to choose between this and LTUE, so the week after Calamity's release would be better for me if we choose Thursday.

Welcome, James! Sounds like you are very well versed in the worlds of Sanderson. I, like Elbereth, recommend the Rithmatist and the Alcatraz books. If Alcatraz doesn't make you laugh, you have no soul. I found the Rithmatist awesome because I am weird and actually like geometry and thought seeing it turned into a magic system was totally epic.

The Reckoners upon first meeting David:
-
You can bet I'll be there! It's literally like 5 minutes from my house.
-
Do we have WoB or WoP on the Calamity release party date and time, then? I haven't been able to find anything when I've looked. The only Utah County event in the "Upcoming Events" section of brandonsanderson.com is LTUE. As for the 10th vs the 24th... I think the 24th would work better for me. The 10th is the day before LTUE, which I've planned to go to, and what with a bunch of other junk I have going on that week, it's going to be a busy one for me. I could do the 10th despite that, though.

I do recall Brandon saying at the Christmastime signing he did at the Orem B&N that he was going to come back to that same store for Calamity's release, so I think it's safe to say it won't be in Jordan Landing again. The question is whether it will be on release day, or the day before.
-
After going back and reading David's initial impression of Megan, I think Jennifer Lawrence is my favorite to play her. "A woman walked past Fortuity. Tall, lithe, and golden-haired, and perhaps twenty years old, she wore a thin red dress with a plunging neckline." I mean, can't you imagine her snagging Fortuity's attention in this dress?

Sunbird wants to join in the dancing, but doesn't really know how, so she shuffles from one foot to the other in a small circle with her hands on her hips.

A warm welcome to persimmon, whose name makes me think of a Japanese tongue twister my dad has tried several times to teach me, but which I can never remember. (It's something about "my neighbors are neighbors who eat persimmons"...) May I extend an invitation to join The Knights Awkward? We have bookies, which are far more delicious (and less dangerous) than the hemalurgic "cookies."
-
I have not been able to find anything on Brandon's website under "Upcoming Events", so I think they're still figuring things out. The re-release for Alcatraz books 1 and 2 is also that day, if Amazon is to be believed, so it'll be like a triple release party.

Okay. Will you please keep us updated via the thread, then?

Thanks for the info, wilson! Which week of the month and roughly what time of day do you usually meet? I should be able to make it to meetings if it's sometime in the afternoon or evening. I'd hate to miss this month just for lack of information.

Sunbird raises her half-eaten bookie in an imitation of a toast and joins the others in shouting, "Bridge Four!"

Sunbird brightens at the sight of a fresh batch of bookies. "Excellent!" she exclaims, claiming a Vin bookie from the tray and beginning to munch on it, fending off a hungry weasel with her other hand as it tries to claw its way up the side of her trousers to steal the bookie. "Go away, you thieving critter!" she mutters at it.

Yessss, another Dresden Files fan! I'd love to hear about your LARP. It sounds like you are into all sorts of awesome stuff. If you are super into the Cosmere, I believe there's a whole board for Cosmere theories somewhere around here that I think you'd enjoy. PS: if anyone offers you a "cookie," think twice about accepting; it's the code word for a hemalurgic spike. You may want to check out The Dark Alley to find out if you really want to accept.
-
Welcome, welcome! Reckoners is also one of my favorites of Brandon's works, though of course I love basically everything he writes. (Who here doesn't, right?) If you've already read Bands of Mourning, make sure you're aware of the board rules about spoilers. Also, here, have your first upvote just for joining. ^.^
-
Ah, ok. I did read those a few days ago, but obviously I forgot the "don't even discuss this with spoilers tags, outside the spoiler boards." Rather large image with bad metaphors from Firefight
-
Is it not okay to just put it under spoiler tags and label it as such?
-
Walked right into that one, I did.
-
Sunbird watches the bookie-stealing weasel with amusement. "Perhaps if someone could instruct me in the creation of these bookies, I could make a new batch for us to enjoy. I'm sure Kit would enjoy them." Turning to Kit, she continues, "Bookies are book-shaped desserts that contain attributes of Brandon's characters. They are far less nefarious than the 'cookies' I'm sure you've been offered by the inhabitants of The Dark Alley."

Seriously considering asking Brandon this next time I see him if nobody here knows the answer.
