Why are Stormlight books so expensive
Treamayne replied to ruler of the mists's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's becoming more common because kindle requires a ToC to be the last file of the ePub for that device to load it for navigation. -
Potential discrepancy Szeth (WaT Spoilers)
Treamayne replied to NGrams's topic in Stormlight Archive
Please keep in mind that the Spoiler Policy means no WaT Spoilers are allowed in the main boards until the New Release Spoiler Period ends. Please use the appropriate Spoiler Zone Board. I have reported this message so that an Admin can maybe move it for you. -
Why are Stormlight books so expensive
Treamayne replied to ruler of the mists's topic in Stormlight Archive
The ePub does have a ToC, but it's at the end. If you accidentally click on any chapter-header images, it will whisk you away quite unfairly (since those storming images, in landscape mode, practically fill the page). -
No worries. Have you considered the current prose version (non-Canon) then using one or more of the Comparison Threads and/or White Sand Summary and Ars Arcanum to identify the differences (mentioned in the previously-linked versions thread)? Slight Spoilers: Of course, it's your choice to wait - I only mention it because many who are "waiting" don't realize there are alternatives (hence the thread linked above). Hope that helps

I'm unsure what you may have read other than Stormlight Archive, but we have been compiling references here. Not quite done, but there may be references noted from Books 1-3 that you may not have read yet that could be a good idea to read before WaT. For example - Stormlight Archive books 2-5 all have repeated references from White Sand (which I know is a commonly skipped Cosmere title). Versions Comparison. I, personally, would not recommend Sunlit Man before SA5. I know they were published in that order, and that Brandon went out of his way to make sure TSM did not spoil WaT directly - but there is enough about TSM that is "murky" that reading it after SA5 would, I think, make the entire experience more pleasant.

Why are Stormlight books so expensive
Treamayne replied to ruler of the mists's topic in Stormlight Archive
Unfortunately, the size, artwork included and other factors all contrinute to a price for physical books that just keeps rising (Mass market books have nearly doubled in price just since 2020). Is eBook and option? Or maybe a gift wishlist (possibly a giftcard to a book store which may effectively split the cost)? Good luck to you. -
Nalthis and Sel are both great options - because in both cases we have seen very little of the world Idris and Halendren for Nalthis, when there are at least a dozen other nations that all interact with the setting very differently from those two Arelon and the Grands from Sel, with peeks at Teod and Fjordells (but not Fjorden) but almost nothing of the rest of the Rose Empire, Fjordell Empire or the mysterious third empire/continent. I just hope it's not "Worldhopper" until we have, at least, the core four settings.

General Books 1-4: The Way of Kings: Words of Radiance: Edgedancer: Oathbringer: I'll edit to add Rhythm of War later, hopefully tomorrow.

Reading The Stormlight Archive for the first time
Treamayne replied to AleStaar's topic in Stormlight Archive
Very Minor Spoilers: Interesting Factoid: Hope you enjoyed your start with Stormlight! -
Also, Sak's talent is more like A-Electrum than Atium, though they are similar because they base of the same Realmatic principals. WoBs: Hope that helps

Here are the WoBs (initial and follow-up): That's because it is a Splinter of Endowment, not BioChromatic Breath - which is why it behaves differently and cannot be used to Awaken - it exists in the SR (attached to the Spiritweb) rather than in the PR where it can be used and transferred. This is also tied into why the one (known) effect of expending a Divine Breath is healing - much like Stormlight or F-Gold, it is applying to the Spiritweb of the target to heal in all three realms and restore the person to their Ideal (which is also why Susebron could speak with a tongue he had never had before - the Divine Breath filled in the gaps since he already knoew the language and the words. . . ) Hope that helps

Yes, it is spelled correctly. intrinsic But Hemalurgy does use Ruin's investiture. Ruin's power is the "scalpel" that cuts off the Hemalurgic Charge from the spirit web. Ruin's nature is why there is an inherent loss of power from that charge - the end-negative nature of Ruin is a core part of Hemalurgy (even if the stored charge is not "Ruin" based. Sorry, I was editing to add this above when you replied - so I just moved it to a new post (accidental "enter" posted the first part of my reply before I was "done."

But that WoB is discussing Magic the Gathering Color combinations - not Cosmere Colors. There are many MtG Color Wobs for Cosmere: If you are unfamilair with MtG's Color philosophies, these WoBs will not make much sense, unfortunately. For example:

Right, because it was Hemalurgy (ruin's magic) corrupted by Autonomy. Still corrupted investiture, not a pure sample of Autonomy's Investiture. Personal Theory:

I'm more curious what makes you think this? TTBoMK, we have zero indications that Autonomy's color would be red. We see Red from Autonomy where she corrupts Scadrian Investiture, but that is because Corrupted Investiture is Red. Where did you see/hear this (or is it your own theory)?

Secret Projects are unlikely, because they are in the future of the Cosmere. As of Days 1-2, references include: Will update, as needed.

My point was that I doubt Brandon would consider or reference just an Odium/Passion MoI as "dangerous" - it's far more likely this was the precipice of Odium trying to make Kaladin his Champion. The bond began, this happened, then the process was stopped by Dalinar's intervention and Kaladin swaering the Fourth Oath. Especially since it is only a few chapters before Odium is all huffy about "losing my champion again." The scene with the eyes is Ch 106 RoW Ch 113: There is not enough data to know for sure - but I find a new, non-foreshadowed, random MoI to be far less likely than an ongoing subplot that has been a part of the entire book. I'm sorry. Looks like you found it (titles can be edited while editing the first post). In case you need/want any other forum tips or how-to's, please check out the Sharder FAQ.

Please note that your thread title references Words of Radiance, not Rhythm of War. Amaram's army wasn't corrupted - Amaram was. The Army was just being influenced by Nergaoul into fighting blindly based on Amaram's direction. OB Ch 119: Do you mean Moash, not Teft? Except we know by WoB that it is something "very dangerous"

We can agree on that. True. Brandon has already mentioned the Time Dilation that Sel experiences, and how difficult it is to traverse Sel's Shadesmar. Odium also learned from this mistake, which is why he found a "better way" to deal with Honor. If so, I cannot find that. Fuzz mentions Ati three times total, and none of them match that descritption. Fuzz never uses the word Vessel either (Ruin, Khriss, Drifter, and the Ire do). You may be thinking of The Letter where Hoid laments how much Ati was subsummed by Ruin of the millennia, but even that would not indicate he was a bad choice of Vessel (especially if a different Vessel would have had less control earlier). M:SH Hope that helps

We just do not have these answers - but based on available evidence: He was not against the Shard's intent - he just was able to focus that intent. Because the Dor no longer has a SR connection - that was the whole point. At least, there are no indications of any level of Investiture (Shard, Splinter, Avatar) having a Vessel without the Power being in the SR first. From the Cognitive Realm bonds become possible, but that's not the same as a Vessel either. It's not just about Connection. The Orb Worked because an Elantrian on Scadrial would need Connection to take up the Shard. (it worked for Kelsier, because he also needed Connection) That's not the missing component for the Dor. I believe part of the equation is Intent. What is the Dor's actual Intent now that it is a forced mixture of Devotion and Dominion? I realize you really really want a Vessel for the Dor, but I doubt it can happen until the Dor returns to the SR (at least partially) - though Brandon has said that there are some Worldhopper Realmaticians who would define the Land's Connection to the Dor as a version of being a Vessel. Hope that helps

So, Vin had a scar on her face left from her encounter with shan elariel? none of the other descriptions about her mentions a scar, and none of the official artwork includes a scar either. yet, zane certainly wasn't working from a description there. perhaps the scar was healed well enough that you'd only notice it burning tin? i'm trying to solve the conflict between that piece of description, and canon art. Note that it says "wound" not scar - so it could just be that Vin feels as if the two wounds were similar, but on opposite cheeks. We also get this tidbit later (WoA Ch 50): Which implies that neither cut actually left a permanent scar (thanks to Pewter). Not definitive by any means - but the only scar mentioned in HoA is Demoux's (HoA Ch 8 ) Hope that helps

Elantris v Hope Audiobook Pronunciation
Treamayne replied to Heavystarfish21's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info. It is my understanding that the Elantris Audiobook was re-recorded for the 10th anniversary. When the first version was made, Brandon did not get to provide the Pronunciation Guide to the Artist. Hope of Elantris was then recorded the same way as far as I know. But when the Elantris 10th anniversary came, and had so many content changes, it needed to be re-recorded and this time the Pronunciation guide was available. Others may have more insight, because I, personally, have not listened to any Cosmere audiobooks (or really any at all - except one failed test that helped me decide that "audio is not for me" back in the mid 90s). Hope that helps. -
The Sharder FAQ has this info (Coppermind and Arcanum are the bottom of first post), and a bunch of other good stuff. The easiest though is to click the "copy" button on the top right of the WoB, which will store all of the information in your clipboard, then you can paste them in a spoiler tag. Is this the WoB you were referencing: Hope that helps

Ati was not a terrible match for Ruin. Ruin is not Evil - so Ati being a "good person" is not a factor. Ati took up Ruin, presumably, because he was one of the few who understood it enough to control and channel the Shard less destructively - focusing on Entropy (than other possible paths that Ruin could take). WoBs: Not just "Dor" but the Dor. As in the whole thing. Because the Dor is in the Cognitive Realm - that was Odium's whole point of doing what he did - to prevent the power from Seeking a Vessel or gaining Sapience. Now, if they could find a way to restore the Dor to the Spiritual Realm. . . Not to mention that the Ire Connection Orb was made of Dor, so I would not expect to be able to use Dor to hack Dor.

@Hoid_Slayer Please do not double post. If you need to add something and you are still the last post in the thread, then edit the post to add your new comment. If you are unsure how to do so, then please see the Sharder FAQ for lots of useful info - this included. I'm sorry, but you confused me here. I've read whole RoW in 2 days - who needs to sleep If I were you I would just finish RoW reading it at my normal pace and then start WaT - I can't stand not finishing reading a book before peaking a new one. If I have to delay reading WaT, so it be. I think it's half a year, so you have a loooot of time. Yes, the Spoiler Policy is six months to allow people to read at their own pace, as well as those waiting on later release dates (like foreign language editions) or non-purchase options (such as arriving t oyour local library collection). Spoiler policy at the link in-full; extract here: Hope that helps
