  1. It has to do with how Preservation hid part of Ruin's power by binding into a Physical Realm Investiture Cycle to prevent it from returning to Ruin in the Spiritual Realm. By binding the power in such a way that it becomes tainted with naturally occuring Electrum to form (Era 1) Atium Geodes - he also caused it to no longer be "Pure Atium" and harder for Ati to locate should he become free. @Trusk'our is likely correct that Rashek moved the pits to their location, and likely caused them to be in chasm-caves (as another method of obfuscation) when he remade Scadrial to begin the Final Empire. WoBs: Hope that helps
  2. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info and tips. The primary RPG boards can be found here: Hope that helps
  3. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info and tips. Evi Kholin was Riran, not Iriali. Rira had some interbreeding with the Iriali and ther was Iriali heritgae in their ancestry. In the case of Iriali - yes it does. What it does not mean is a layer of elemental Gold over a layer of Skin. WoK I-5: WoR I-2 Both Hair and Skin are reflective metallics - like using the "metallic paint" from a hardware store. WoB: Hope that helps
  4. There simply is not enough information to determine correlation or causation (or both or neither). We know: Elantris City predates the Splintering of Devotion and Dominion AonDor was a discovered art, and that art was used for making Elantris City The Current Arelenes are immigrants (from the area now called Teod), and not the original inhabitants of that land and did not make Elantris City The Walls of Elantris City and the border cities (Aon Rao) are only one of the Fabrials that run "Elantris" What we do not know Was Devotion's pool there before she was Splintered? Did Devotion assist in the creation of Elantris? Did the Shaod predate Elantris City, or is it a function of the fabrials in city's construction? Alternately, was there some precursor to the current Shaod that was happening before Elantris City was built? WoBs and Annotations: Hope that helps
  5. WoB:
  6. To be specific, they collect water from a Fabrial that is explained as using condensation - which may or may not be the entire truth (unreliable narrator happens). But moisture in the air isn't a factor in Shadesmar weather, either. OB CH 99: Note that Air in Shadesmar is "leakage" from the Physical Realm, but does not have or require an oxygen cycle (Shadesmar plants don't do that) or other PR properties. WoB: Nope. The light in Shadesmar is omnipresent and non-directional. All sides of a person or object are "lit." Other sources of light create shadows that work like the physical realm. The Shadesmar "sun" is visible from all Subastrals, but not always in the space between planets. Nope - it is at least all Sapient beings, as Syl's shadow also points toward the Shadesmar Sun OB Ch 91: Hope that helps
  7. I think that would depend on what era of history since the recreance and what caste the person was (a "subtractor" - probably not, as they learn more in thier training; a farmer or merchant, possibly; etc.)

    "Sand" Mastery

I think he is simplifying for his (presumably Eelakin) audience. The fact is, he's not wrong - drip a little water and spores and they'll do "something" without any kind of bond at all. That does not preclude a skilled Sprouter from learning to use the Luhel Bond to affect more Control over how the Spores express themselves when activated. Hoid's just not explaining the entire truth. . .
  9. No offense intended, but that is why I linked the Wikipedia article the extract came from - so you can easily read more if you want. I find it unethical for me to copy an entire article (from any site, not just WikiMedia - who do great work and deserve our support) when it is easier to let the people who are interested read/skim the original page (which would allow them to link to related pages). My Apologies.
  10. 화랑도 (花郞道) - Hwarang-do Excerpt: Hope that helps
  11. TKD was the first martial art I studied back in 1983, but it didn't last long (for me or that school, the instructor had "issues" - purposeful injury as a motivational tool for children). . . Much later: I did one of my university Korean studies papers (연대 어학당) on the formation of Hwarang (화랑) during Korea's Three-Kingdoms period (신라, 백제, 고구려) and how that influenced modern Korean martial arts like TKD and Hwarang do.
  12. I do not think Physical Realm physics applies to Cognitive Realm geography/atmosphere. Shadesmar is a flat plane where geography only loosely correlates to the Physical Realm (sometimes) where Gravity does not cause curvature and shadows point toward the "sun" rather than away. I would be surprised if altitude (height or depth) caused any change in "pressure" until and unless the majority of Cosmere Sapients began believing it should work that way - and even then it would take a long time for such a change to occur. Hope that helps
  13. It's unlikely, not just because of the legacy of knowledge (or beleived knowledge) in Shinovar - but because that area wasn;t contested during the Desolations. It's where humans were supposed to stay, and did not. It's unlikely any Singers were in Shinovar at all when they became the Parsh. So while one here or there may have gone over the mountains over the centuries, it's not likely there was any significant number.
  14. Yep. Brandon's talked about it a few times - an example on how Scientific Discovery spurs Scientific Discovery. So, while Talkdain was accessing Silverlight and hosting Worldhoppers, their understanding was moving right along. Then Autonomy closed them off and they started stagnating for lack of cultural and knowledge exchange. Presumably, this is when Bavadin started "sharing" ideas to try helping them catch back up (Kelsier's Comment). If Taldain is open again (as of IED) then it may be that she realized the isolationism was causing more problems than it was fixing. . .
  15. It was the opposite - at least while Autonomy went full-isolationist. She interfered to boost tech for Taldain (giving Gunpowder to Darkside - as seen in White Sand and Secret History [Khriss' revolver]) and more we have not yet seen, but was hinted by Kelsier in TLM. Hope that helps
  16. Glad you seemed to enjoy it, so far. This improves as the series continues and reveals start happening. Hope you enjoy the remainder when you get around to them. You mention WoK. . . Minor Anticipatory Comparison/Spoiler:
  17. Likely referencing OB Ch 109: Which may imply a Proto-Plate (in the same way that Kaladin Commanded his following Windspren to divert the Storm when shielding the fleeing humans in Ch 31). However, we also know that Dalinar was using Tension and Adhesion in the Vision, so the effect could have come from the use of Surges in a Spiritual Realm Vision. Implication, not confirmation. Hope that helps.
  18. Tarson was a Pewter Savant, but as we know from Sazed - many Thugs rarely live through the process of becoming a Savant. Epigraph to HoA Ch 16: Hope that helps
  19. TSM shows that Nomad's armor is made up of Plate Spren for both Windrunners and Skybreakers. We know that his Wind Spren followed him off of Roshar, because they were pointed out in WaT when he was joining the Convoy and met Aux. It is implied that since the Plate Spren bond a Radiant (and follow them) - he kept his bonded WindSpren and gained some LuckSpren from his Skybreaker Oaths - resulting in a mixed set of Shardplate. Hope that helps

    Pure tones

We have no indications that any other perpendicularity broadcasts it's tone and rhythm the same way that the Well of Ascension did (which Leras specifically set-up to work that way on a 1024 year cycle). The Well was designed to choose a Vessel 16 years before it was Full, and to begin broadcasting it's Tone and Rhythm to lead the chosen to the Well. WoB: WaT Spoilers: It's likely that a Seeker would need a valid Connection to the Investiture in the Well to Seek it. It's possible that other Perpendicularities' tones and rhtyhm can be sensed, but we don't have enough data to know if that happens automatically, requires certain conditions, or has to be prevented when a Shard does not want it found (or some other circumstances). In Theory, a skilled enough Seeker, with the proper Intent should be able to sense a perpendicularity if it is Pulsing. Sorry there is not a definitive answer. Hope that helps anyway.
  21. It's fine to have more than one - and they are slightly different. Just pointing out the poll was there since you seemed interested in reading other opinions.
  22. See also - the most recent poll. There are many others if you search, but most of those were from before WaT.
  23. ^This^ But also, it has been repeatedly shown that knowledge and Intent are very important in the Cosmere. Patji trained the Trappers to have this skill in Seeking: Which, of course, also implies that a Seeker (or other sensing MoI) could learn to use their ability like this - once they know it is possible and understand the Intent of what they are trying to Sense. Hope that helps. PS: I really wish they had been called Wayfinders rather than Navigators. . .
  24. I think you are simply dividing the hemispheres incorrectly: But, also please keep in mind that Gloryspren are not confirmed for Bondsmiths - they were simply used on the card deck because they needed to use something. It is also possible that each Bondsmith would have a different one, if they get Plate at all. WoB: Hope that helps
  25. Here's the WoB: Out of Curiosity? Did you read TLM before reading the rest of Mistborn? Did you not expect spoilers by doing so? If not, then I am confused as to what you are trying to say. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info and tips. Hope that helps
