  1. It's the most wonderful time of year again, Brandon has just released a book and the fandom is buzzing. That's right, today Shadows of Self and the 10th Anniversary Edition of Elantris have finally released! Not only that but they are pretty storming awesome. I'm still reeling from a marathon reading session of Shadows of Self (that ending, oh Harmony). If you are still on the fence on whether you want to get either of them check out our spoiler free review of Shadows of Self and our coverage on the Anniversary Edition and its beautiful new maps. Really though, just go and get them now. Once you've read the books you can join in on the discussion in our reaction threads for Shadows of Self and Elantris. In other news Ben McSweeney is doing a reddit AMA over in /r/fantasy today, the question thread is already up here. Ben is a fantastic artist who has worked on a lot of Brandon-related projects. He's done the Shallan's Sketchbook pages for Stormlight, illustrations and covers for the Mistborn Adventure Game, and illustrations for the Rithmatist. Not to mention he worked on the broadsheets in Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self. Please go and give him some love by doing what we Brandon fans do best, ask questions. Brandon is also currently in the midst of a twitter chat with iBooks about Shadows of Self, check out his profile feed for his responses. Check out our forum topics here to discuss Ben's AMA, and here for the iBook twitter chat.
  2. Eh it takes place after, but not that long. When asked about it Brandon has said "It's not so long after that the technology level has change" and "It's not so long after that there aren't Elantris characters still around".
  3. So we've known for a while that Vin's father was a Tekiel and that House Tekiel is still around in Wax's time. As a result I've been wondering about the following question: So I ordered a copy of Shadows of Self and asked Brandon. Here's his answer: So, that's interesting. What do y'all think?
  4. @skaa That is a great idea, and frankly terrifying.
  5. The AMA thread is live! (He won't be answering questions until tonight though)
  6. Yeah it's a running joke, Brandon always describes Peter with an adjective that begins with "in-".
  7. Okay the List is up to date (with only 2 days to spare...).
  8. Perfect State does have a physical copy in the form of a flipback hardcover with Shadows for Silence. It was Brandon's con exclusive this year but it should go up in his store in the next couple months. Unless you mean a solo physical release, in which case it's probably too short for that to be feasible. If Brandon writes a sequel (which I hope he does) I could see him doing doing a physical omnibus then.
  9. So doing a little more digging and I found a few of the episode titles: this site has the following list: The schedule on the History Channel website however, has "Devils and Hell" listed for Oct 9, and "Cannibals and Killers" for Oct 16. Edit: @Morzathoth, somebody needs to photoshop Brandon's face onto a picture of the Aliens guy doing his thing.
  10. So I was just checking Brandon's twitter when I noticed something in his twitter bio: You can check out a 30 sec promo of the show here (though no Brandon there). I'll try to update with more information when possible but what do y'all think about this?
  11. Koloss-blooded individuals are human, so they can totally interbreed with "regular" humans. The koloss themselves are less a distinct species (like the kandra) and more just mutated humans. The Alloy of Law supplement for the MAG does touch on this briefly in the bio for Tarson, neither of his parents were koloss, but his father was koloss-blooded.
  12. So these editions are totally sold out, but the covers, by Tom Kidd, have been revealed on the Subterreanean Press website: So what do people think of them?
  13. Yeah Era 1 has a ton of foreshadowing, it's because Brandon was still early in his career so Tor would wait a few years before him submitting a book and releasing it. As a result he was able to write the entire trilogy and rewrite a lot of it before TFE was released.
  14. As several people have pointed out, a woman matching her description was there that night. Regardless of that however, something hinky was definitely going on with her what with her being "visited" by her dead brother. I'm willing to bet that that is involved with all of this, especially since the guard who shoots at the Governor was also whispering to someone/something. Eh, hehe. I think somehow I completely missed your post in that thread, which is incredibly shameful since I was the next poster... I think I was maybe distracted by the thing I wanted to respond to in Argent's post? Yeah that was another thing running through my mind as I thought of all this. I really hope that Sazed didn't just give a Splinter of Ruin to Kelsier, 'cause in my opinion that would just be a phenomenally stupid decision on Sazed's part. Sure, let's give the fragment of the power that wants to destroy everything to a guy that loves killing people.
  15. Just an FYI but I merged the thread you just started into this one, we really don't want duplicate threads.
  16. Okay to preference this, I do not want this to be true. I wish I could just set it aside and forget it but I just can't. A while back we learned that "something" was influencing Miles in Alloy of Law: (source) In the preview chapters of Shadows so far we've also seen people acting strangely. Idashwy killing a Winsting, the guard opening fire on the Governer. What do these have in common? They are all in opposition to a corrupt, largely Noble government. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Because to me that sounds an awful lot like Kelsier. A clinical psychopath, who loves killing, especially Nobles and worked to bring down the Final Empire and Noble rule. This even ties back into the Miles question, a svrakiss is kind of a half-demon/half spirit of the dead, and what is Kelsier? A Cognitive shadow, a dead guy who is sticking around in the three realms instead of passing into the final beyond. The how of this all is something I really don't know, and I'm kind of scared to go down that rabbit hole. Again I do not want this to be true, I really hope that Shadows/Bands prove me wrong, but I just had to write this up.
  17. And Brandon just confirmed that the altar in the background is THE altar.
  18. Oh wow that's a doozy of a chapter. I do wonder if there's a continuity there. It's mentioned that Sazed didn't include any mention of Hemalurgy in the Words of Founding, but weren't the HoA epigraphs supposed to be excerpts from the Words? Hemalurgy is definitely mentioned in the epigraphs.
  19. Shadows of Self is now only a week away! (Or well for most of us). Brandon in a recent blog post has mentioned that in the UK while Shadows is being released in ebook and audiobook form on Oct 8, two days after the US release, the official UK print release will not be until the 15th. On a happier note Tor.com has just posted the next preview chapter, and Harmony is it a doozy. Check it out here! Last Friday we reported that Tor.com posted the cover for Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians Book 5: The Dark Talent. Well earlier today the cover artist, Scott Brundage, posted the full wrap-around version of the art (without any obscuring text) on his twitter. It's pretty cool. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview and here to discuss the cover!
  20. Scott Brundage, the cover artist for the new Alcatraz covers just posted the full wraparound image on his twitter, and it's pretty awesome:
  21. I'm guessing that's actually Bastille's mother, since the blurb says that Bastille is in a coma.
  22. Okay update from Peter's twitter:
  23. Is this what you are looking for?
  24. Well given what happened at the end of Book 4 any sword he picks up is probably safe from that fate (for a little while at least). Also the tall guy in the top hat isn't Kaz, the guy holding the teddy bear is.
  25. Brandon mentioned that that was a potential title at one point during a signing line, but at the same time he also mentioned the Dark Talent as a potential title. The first "official" announcement of the title referred to it as the latter. I wouldn't call that them "changing" it, so much as just deciding on the title. To be frank I'm mostly inclined to think of the "Versus his own stupid self" was a kind of a joke title.
