  1. You did not remember wrong.
  2. The thing to keep in mind is that genre is almost entirely a marketing thing. Mistborn Era 1 was originally released as an Adult fantasy (and still is), it was later repackaged and re-released with new covers by Tor's teen imprint as a YA for a number of reasons, such as it having a teenaged girl protagonist. Mistborn Era 2 has only been released as an adult fantasy because it does not have the same YA-ness. Generally YA books are shelved together regardless of genre whereas Adult books are shelved by genre.
  3. Argel is right. Please keep discussion of the Stormlight 3 chapter within spoiler tags, which I've tried to add where I've noticed they are needed here, (unless there is a spoiler tag in the title of the thread) there are a few members of the forums that do not read pre-release material and we should respect their desire to remain spoiler-free.
  4. That was not him giving her Breath, that was something else that Brandon has refused to comment on up until now. The main theory is that she, with Vasher's guidance, used part of her own Breath to make herself forget what had just happened to her.
  5. You don't have to constantly be burning the metal, at that point in time he's just drawing from his reserves of Youth from when he did a bunch of Compounding at once. Theoretically maybe, though we still don't really understand whether the process to create unsealed metalminds is as simple of that. But also keep in mind that the Lord Ruler was a very secretive, and paranoid, person, the fewer people who knew about his exact nature the better. Koloss-blooded individuals are the result of a koloss breeding with another koloss. Spikes are still required to become a full koloss. It doesn't say. Vasher does not give any Breaths to the priest's daughter that I can recall. We do not know.
  6. The beast you are thinking of is a santhid (plural: santhidyn) which as far as we know is not a greatshell.
  7. I think you mean Rysn here, but regardless Lanceryn were native to Aimia, the Tai-na are a different species.
  8. I think "seems" is the operative word there. Yes, the Dor is effectively infinite, because it is incredibly unlikely that it could ever be "used up" at any one moment, but in reality there is still a finite amount of energy there (it's just an unimaginably large amount). Nalthis and Roshar also both have artificial limitations that just aren't a factor on Sel. Yes Breaths are limited by the number of people, but people are also continually being born and they are each getting a Breath from Endowment (and consequently if somebody dies with Breath, that Breath returns to Endowment). And yes the amount/size of gems is a limiting factor to the amount of Stormlight that can be used/stored (unless you are flying around in the middle of a highstorm) but there are ways of getting more gems. Basically let's view things this way (and I fully admit there are some... oddities with the following metaphor) : Invesiture is money, Shards are bank accounts. On Nalthis, when a person is born they get a single dollar which can be exchanged freely between people. People can use this money power stuff, and when they are done they get the money back. When a person dies any money they are holding returns to the Endowment-bank-account. On Roshar, periodically a bank teller goes around tossing money all over the place and people can get as much of it as their wallets can hold. Over time the money in their wallets decreases and returns to the Honor-and/or-Cultivation-bank account. People can also use this money to do stuff but when they do the money also returns to the bank account. On Sel people have debit cards linked directly to the Dor-bank-account. They get as much money as they need whenever they need it and it immediately returns to the bank account. Why are these planets different? They just are.
  9. The thing to remember is that the Dor is actually the Splintered remains of Devotion and Dominion, two Shards of Adonalsium. So your question is a little like asking why a river is so much better at turning a waterwheel than a cup of water is, it's because there's a lot more raw power involved. The Returned can heal people by expending their divine Breath, which is a Splinter of Endowment. While the divine Breaths are magnitudes more powerful than individual Breaths, they are still only a drop in the bucket when compared to Endowment herself. The Dor is roughly twice that. Awakening is an end-neutral magic system, the Investiture involved comes from the person using it in the form of Breath. AonDor is an end-positive magic system, so Investiture is coming from an outside source (the Dor). AonDor is more powerful than Awakening for the same reason that an electric mixer is more powerful than a person using a whisk. With Stormlight, there's a bit of a middle-man, in the form of the highstorms, which release a finite amount of Stormlight. But Stormlight, once used, will return to the Spiritual Realm where it will eventually be kicked out in another hightstorm. AonDor skips that middle-man, it taps directly into the Dor (which is located in the Cognitive Realm, a fact which may or may not be relevant to this discussion). And when that Investiture is expended it returns to the Dor. Why are all these things different? There really isn't a reason.
  10. There have been quite a few threads on the subject of Iyatil's ancestry. Short answer, she is descended from individuals from Southern Scadrial, but she was not born there.
  11. Is Nauvoo more established? According to their website the company was founded in 2014 (compared to Crafty's 2005) and only seems to have released one game and an expansion.
  12. So we just recently found out that a company called Nauvoo Games is making a Reckoners themed board game. What does everyone think of this?
  13. There is WoB from Writing Excuses Season 9 Episode 23 (link to transcript)
  14. Correct, Rosharan days are 20 hours long. And their days and nights should be abouts the same as the planet lacks an axial tilt. There are also 3 moons.
  15. Minor correction here, as Rosharan years are only 1.1 the length of Earth years, but for a Rosharan the 50-60 age range would correspond to 55-66, so not quite to the seventies. Also keep in mind that he has kept himself in good shape, he hasn't "let himself go" so to speak, and it isn't that unusual for even Earth people to remain fit into that age range (I Have an uncle who biked across the US on a pennyfarthing bicycle a couple years ago, when he was right around 60 years old). He also has had Shardplate, which is part of the reason he's still in combat in WoK. There's even a part at the end where Dalinar comments that Adolin had given him a gauntlet to replace his that had been destroyed and Dalinar thinks: So obviously there has been some diminished in his ability while outside of Shardplate, he isn't as capable as he was when he was in his forties. Then as Yata pointed out Rosharans are generally healthier because of the Investiture going around.
  16. Hey there Sanderfans, those of us who are also fans of board games certainly have a lot to look forward to! Not only do we have Mistborn: House War (and Mistborn: The Siege of Luthadel) on the horizon but board game company Nauvoo Games just recently announced they will be creating and releasing a board game based on The Reckoners series. Here is their press release: I for one look forward to learning more. If anyone is going to be at GenCon this weekend go say hello! For Alcatraz fans the Tor/Forge blog has posted the first chapter of The Dark Talent (which is only a little over a month away from release)! Check it out here. Now those of you who subscribe to Brandon's newsletter will likely remember he shared this back in January 2015. So it is not new to everybody, but it is still a great chapter and I really can't wait to read the rest of the book. Back in March we reported that Tor Books was releasing special limited edition Stormlight Companion for Independent Bookstore Day. Well the Tor/Forge blog just recently announced that anyone that subscribes to their newsletter will receive a free digital copy of the Companion (people who are already subscribed need to sign up again though). There really isn't anything that fans like us don't already know, but it is a handy little reference book. Finally Stormlight 3 is over 2/3rds drafted! Woohoo!
  17. Moved this to the Stormlight forum and added a note in the title for Mistborn spoilers.
  18. Okay at this point, in order for this thread to remain on topic, any further discussion on the nature of Void binding and whether stormform is a Void bringer form should take place in its own thread.
  19. To quote myself there is a difference between "magic that is part of a formal magic system" and "magic that is part of nature". Yes, stormforms "use magic" but that magic is not part of a formal magic system, it is a natural ability of that form.

  21. I would argue that we should probably just get rid of the term Shardpool altogether, as I really don't see a meaningful distinction between Patji's Eye and the Well beyond the nature of the Investiture involved but that is just my personal thought. Here's how Leras describes the Well in Secret History: So the Well and Patji's Eye are both places where Investiture pools and collect, it's just that one is Shardic and the other isn't. (I'll also point out that we use the term "Shardworld" for worlds that don't have Shards, so it wouldn't be revolutionary to use Shardpool for Shardpools that don't have Shards)
  22. I think he's said that he has no current plans to go back and finish them. It just takes too much time away from writing. But YAY!
  23. Eh, "shardpool" isn't a canon term so doesn't really have a definition beyond what we, as fans, give it. Regardless Patji's Eye is the same thing as the Well of Ascension or the Lake in the mountains above Elantris, just much smaller in scope.
  24. Actually just remembered this but it's stated in chapter 89 of WoR that the stormform listeners are Voidbrigners:
