  1. They definitely wouldn't have mistborn, none of their ancestors would have burned lerasium so they just wouldn't have the allomantic potential. They could have mistings, but they would be so exceedingly rare as to be non-existent (as it was during Classical Scadrial, only more so). I also doubt they would have feruchemists, that gene was exclusive to the terris population which is in the north. As Shardlet said we just don't know how the mechanical Metallic Arts work. Chaos has an exellent theory about this, which can be found here. It wouldn't work the way you describe however, since that is still accessing them though genetics, same as the Northerners. The Southerners access the Metallic Arts in a technological manner.
  2. We know that similar magics tend to work in the same way. All healing magics work in essentially the same way, all illusion magics (read Lightweaving) work in the same way. I don't really think that is what Brandon means by similarities. I get the impression that he is talking about "mechanical" similarities, that they don't just result in the same effects the produce them in the same/similiar ways as well. If that makes sense... We actually do know that they do the same thing, as I mention above they are both illusion magics. I just don't see the problem here so I'm probably really bad at explaining this. It makes perfect sense to me for them both to be called Lightweaving. I'm going to disagree with Shardlet on us not knowing whether it is called "Lightweaving" on Yolen. The working title for the sequel to The Liar of Partinel (Hoid's backstory book which takes place pre-Shattering on Yolen and so before Rosharan Lightweaving could exist) is/was The Lightweaver of Rens. This is kind of my fault, what I was trying to get across was that Hoid would have needed to ask for the "gene therapy" after Ruin and Preservation settled on Scadrial since it would not have been possible before then. We know he was on Scadrial during the the Classical period (before the Ascension of the Lord Ruler) because he was involved in some way with the Worldbringers (who were feruchemists) so it is possible. (But that is just a theory, and not even the one I espouse...) Edit: It is also called Lightweaving in the excerpt we have of Liar (I have not personally read it beyond a quick word search). (On a side note the Hoid that appears in that story is not the Hoid we are familiar with. Midius is that Hoid.)
  3. Wait... This was confirmed? How did I miss that? Last I checked it was still a theory.
  4. So Kurkistan already responded to a lot of this so I won't answer those sections. As Kurk said, Kelsier holding Preservation is only barely hinted at in the books. As for how he is able to stick around, we don't really know. I can say it isn't a result of him holding Preservation because he had already been dead for like two years by that point. The theory I ascribe to is that because he is essentially worshiped as a god by the Church of the Survivor has a strong tie to the Physical Realm helping him to stick around. We also don't know exactly how he took up the Shard since he was in the Cognitive Realm at the time (there is a lot about how things work in the Cognitive Realm we just don't know). If Scadrial was threatened, I don't doubt that he would take action. Well sharing the name makes perfect sense to me. Why wouldn't Honor/Cultivation call R-LW Lightweaving if it is essentially the same as what they are familiar with from Yolen. They would call it what it was, which is Lightweaving. I'm with Kurkistan on this though, what similarities do you see? That is how it works. And technically yes he could ask Preservation or Ruin to insert the genes for feruchemy, it is within their powers. Sazed does something similar when he turns Spook into a mistborn. As for the mechanical Metallic Arts, we know that from an interview, not Alloy of Law. I phrased this poorly, Awakening is not restricted to only native Nlathians, anyone can do it. Only Nalthians can detach their own Breath. If non-natives are given Breath they can Awaken Hoid's endgame is a mystery to us all... Here is a rough chronology. We don't know how Demoux is still alive, it is possible Sazed made him into an atium compounder though. As for the tech differences, different cultures develop at different rates. Scadrial also has had help in the form of the Words of Founding and such (the books and such that Sazed gave at the end of the trilogy). Yes that means space ships, Brandon has said that he designed the Metallic Arts in such a way to have FTL built into the system. I really would reccomend reading Alloy, it isn't my favorite cosmere book but it is still pretty good. It has a bit of a Western feel and the interaction between the modern setting (such as guns) and the magic systems is really interesting.
  5. Yah, the discussion of unpublished books is indeed a no-go on the forums. You can discuss it over PM though.
  6. Not a problem This is a really tricky thing because everything "exists" in all three realms kinda sorta. But for all that we know about Shards there is still a lot that we don't understand. I myself do not know how to adequately explain this situation at this time. As for Kelsier, after his death instead of moving on to the cosmere afterlife he decides to stick around in the Cognitive Realm. He also takes over the power of Preservation between Leras' death and Vin's ascension. Don't worry, none of this has anything to do with the plot of Elantris or The Emperor's Soul. Splintering is, in many ways, and analogous process to the Shattering of Adonalsium. It breaks up the Shard's power into smaller pieces, often killing the holder of the Shard in the process. But again, there is a lot we just don't know. I can say that it isn't really the same as lerasium (which shouldn't be capitalized by the way) and atium, those are physical aspects of a Shard whereas Splinters tend to be more Spiritual/Cognitive. If there was no other way I'm sure he would but I think he would prefer for the inhabitants of each shardworld to be able to fix their own problems. (That sounds kind of harsh, what I mean is that he wouldn't want to fix people's problems for them, he would rather help them fix them.) I don't know that I would really call it "repeating one of his own magic systems". There are fundamental magical laws in the cosmere, and so similar magic systems work in essentially the same way. So all illusion magics work the same as "Lightweaving". There has been considerable discusion concerning the the various healing mechanisms and how they relate to this. That isn't to say that they are exactly the same. Rosharan-Lightweaving and Yolish-Lightweaving are powered in different ways R-LW, like all of Surgebinding, requires Stormlight whereas we don't know what Y-LW requires (if it requires anything). They also have different origins, R-LW was formed from the interactions between the investiture of Honor (and possibly Cultivation, we don't really know the specifics yet) and Roshar itself. Y-LW existed before the Shattering and so it was likely a product of Adonalsium. Shards "giving" the magic systems to the shardworlds is really the wrong way to look at it. Magic systems are a product of the interactions of the investiture of the shards invested in a shardworld and the shardworld itself (so if Ruin and Preservation had gone to a different shardworld it, presumably, would not have resulted in the Metallic Arts). Feruchemy is a balance system, it is a mix between Ruin and Preservation (whereas allomancy is entirely of Preservation and hemalurgy entirely of Ruin). The thing amount Awakening though is that all it requires is having Breath, as long as you have enough of it you can Awaken stuff. Hoid would not have needed to "obtain that ability on Yolen", I don't even think that would be possible as only native Nalthians are able to able to detach their natural Breath (i.e. everybody has a section of their soul/spiritweb/spritual aspect that is a "Breath" but only Nalthians can detach it, in the way some lizards can detach their tails). We don't really know how Hoid got his feruchemy, it is entirely possible he just asked either Preservation or Ruin to insert the necessary genes into his spiritweb (he did know them pre-Shattering after all). My personal theory however is that he is using the mechanical method of accessing feruchemy that is practiced on the Southern continent (before you ask, literally all we know is that they access the Metallic Arts in a mechanical/technological manner, but we don't really know what that means). Side note: Sel is the shardworld Elantris or The Emperor's Soul take place on. Keep in mind that The Way of Kings takes place roughly three hundred years after the first Mistborn Trilogy, that is plenty of time for his situation to change. There are other worldhoppers, Demoux's companion's in the Purelake interlude are two of them (one of them is from Elantris, the other an unpublished book) and there is a terriswoman somewhere in Warbreaker we don't know who she is though. He calls them "conflux" books. If I remember correctly Dragonsteel might have some of it. Probably the third Mistborn trilogy since they'll have FTL at that point and be exploring the cosmere.
  7. The Original Shardholders all lived on Yolen, which is where Adonalsium was Shattered. The exact circumstances are not known but the Shards were taken up by the holders and all, or most, left the planet. Shards can "will" themselves to another planet, although there are ramafications for doing so if they are invested in a planet. The Shards got to their planets because they decided to go there. I don't think it would be correct to say that the Shards existed in the Spiritual or Cognitive Realms (Shadesmar is a Rosharan word that means "Cognitive Realm") as they can be taken up by people in either the Physical Realm (as Vin and Sazed did) or the Cognitive Realm (as Kelsier did). The Selish Shards are Devotion and Dominion and they are "unclaimed" and currently Splintered so it would be difficult for anyone to take them up. The holder of Odium, Rayse, believes that Odium is perfect for him and so he doesn't want to change that by taking another Shard. As for Sazed, I don't think he will end up with the other Shards, he has a policy of non-interference and I don't think he would want to leave Scadrial. The "Hoid was the Holder of Adonalsium theory" is one that has been discussed but it hasn't gotten far because there is just so much we don't know. The physical planets did exist pre-Shattering but only some of them had life. Yolen was the first planet to have human-life. The Shards went to their various shardworlds and invested in them, creating life where necessary. As a side effect of their investing the magic systems were created. In regards to Hoid having Lightweaving, he has Yolish-Lightweaving not Rosharan-Lightweaving so he would not necessarily have other Surgebinding abilities and he doesn't get the ability from a spren bond. He does not need infused gems, presumably. Theoretically you can get any magic to work anywhere it is just very difficult for some. The Metallic Arts are the easiest to use off-world but the Selish magics, due to their being region-locked, are very difficult. It is entirely possible that Shallan and Jasnah could Worldhop if they knew it was possible. As for them obtaining other abilities, I doubt it. The Stormlight Archive won't be dealing with other shardworlds besides probably Braize. They wouldn't just stumble across a shard either, because that is not really how shards work.
  8. Actually, the question was "How do they use magic differently?" To which Brandon replied "...people have discovered how to harness the metallurgic arts in a more mechanical method." (emphasis mine) It is quite clear that Brandon is referring to more than just allomancy (the use of "metallurgic arts" instead of allomancy, the plurality of "arts").
  9. We already know that they use all of the metallic arts in a mechanical way.
  10. The supercontinent is in the southern hemisphere, the Reshi sea is to the north and has a tropical climate (as well as one of the northern oceans being named the "Steamwater") and the "Frostlands" is located in south Roshar.
  11. The southern ambassador is indeed a Derethi gyorn, Brandon has confirmed this. As for Dakhor using soulstamps? I'm not so sure, the strange symbols are made from reshaping the bones themselves using unknown methods. I guess it is possible but Brandon added Forgery/Bloodsealing and soulstamps to the world long after he worldbuilt AonDor and presumably Dakhor. Anyway, if I remember correctly aren't the bones twisted via chanting?
  12. There has been a lot of discussion about the Steel Alphabet on the forums, I think this thread is a good place to start. As for the allomantic/feruchemical meanings I would suggest the coppermind. The pages for the metals all have their associated symbols. (Note to self though, improve the actual Steel Alphabet page)
  13. I brought this issue to the attention of the shardmins a couple days ago in chat and they are working on a solution, we just need to be patient. (My suggestion was a "Minor Shardworlds" forum)
  14. Buy We will see it, but it will be in an Interlude.
  15. Sort of, Kaladin is on the path to becoming a Windrunner which means he can manipulate the Surges of Pressure and Gravity. While Szeth has the abilites of a Windrunner, he himself is not one. The fact that Jasnah and Shallan are different orders can be deduced from WoK, the names of their orders and their other Surges was revealed in interviews. Odium is going around killing and shattering the other Shards because he wants to be the most powerful being in the cosmere but I wouldn't say that is an intrinsic part of Odium. If someone besides Rayse had taken it up they would very likely act differently. Honor and Cultivation (who is female) came to Roshar together because they were romantically involved. They have to act according to their Intent, but they are able to interpret to a certain extent, meaning they can do whatever they want as long as they believe conforms to the Intent of their Shard.
  16. The "two shards" are Honor and Cultivation. Honor still counts even if it was splintered. The "there's a fourth shard on Roshar theory" is one that crops up every so often but there have only been three shards to exist on Roshar (as shards). The Nightwatcher is heavily implied to be Cultivation. Shards don't really have "duties" they are beings of incredible power, they can do whatever they want to. Theoretically some one could take up Honor, but it would take some effort in un-splintering it first. Dalinar is a popular choice for its new holder, if he survives his encounter with Szeth that is. Szeth's blade is a common theory for the "third kind of blade". But there is a segment of the fandom that believes it to actually be Jezrien's honorblade. Keep in mind that that list doesn't actually name the Heralds, those are numbers based on the names of the Heralds, i.e. Jezrien/Jezerezeh-Jes, Nalan-Nan, and so on. And no, only two orders are able to Soulcast via Surgebinding (by way of the Transformation Surge).
  17. I don't think the Oathpact was between the Heralds and the Almighty, it is implied to be between Honor, Odium, and possibly Cultivation. The Heralds were a part of the Pact yes, but they act on behalf of one of the members, namely Honor. We found out about Braize in this interview. I would recommend doing some reading in the Coppermind wiki, the Shard article would be a good start. Actually, what Shardlet was trying to say isn't that Honor died in the present, which we know to be false, but rather that he died in between the times depicted in Dalinar's visions. Brandon has said that we have seen three kinds of blade so far. We know the honorblades are one kind but we don't know what the distinction between the other two are. You are correct in saying we don't find out much about the magic systems in the book but we do have a wealth of knowledge about them that has been gleaned from interviews. Brandon has said that all of Heralds are either mentioned/named or appear on screen in WoK. A list can be found here. As for identifying them through their actions, we have been using the divine attributes ascribed to them/their orders in the Ars Arcanum (i.e. Jezrien/Windrunners - Leading/Protecting). Well Dalinar's honorableness is a more recent development in his life. Taravangian could well be operating under the assumption Dalinar is still the "Blackthorn". If so it would be prudent of him to eliminate him because a united Alethkar under the Blackthorn would not be good for Taravangian's plans for saving the world.
  18. I don't think the amount of Breath a person has affects the likelihood of them Returning. (Though Drabs do not Return.) If I remember correctly the Hallendren are not completely off-base when they say that a person has to die in a special/significant way in order to Return. Then Endowment shows them a vision of the future and gives them the option of Returning to help change it. Edit: Wow... Double Ninja'd...
  19. Just a side note but it is possible to grant sentience with more Ruin than Preservation. (My personal theory is that this is what happened when the koloss got turned into a true-breeding species, they have more Ruin than Preservation, and that is where at least part of the extra Ruin in Harmony is going.)
  20. Sell, The Reckoners takes place on an alt!Earth, Brandon has said definitely that Earth is not in the cosmere, reworking it so the Reckoners takes place would take massive rewrites of Steelheart, et. al., which would take time Brandon should spend on more important things. Cultivation will appear on screen within the first five-book arc.
  21. I think it is important that divine Breaths aren't just big/powerful Breaths. Normal Breaths are a part of a person's soul and/or innate investiture, whereas divine Breaths are Splinters. I'm not sure why a Returned would have to survive an average of 10 years? What are you trying to get at? Endowment, presumably, doesn't lose anything by creating Splinters except for a reduction in power equal to the strength of the Splinter. On a side note, we do not know Endowment's gender at this time.
  22. Yes, Endowment does it with the divine Breaths.
  23. In general yes, spoiler tags aren't necessary in the Cosmere Theories sub-forum, however there is a caveat there. They are not required for books that have been released for longer than six months. (Six months is the length of time the spoiler-sub-forum remains in existence) Outside of the Words of Radiance Spoiler Forum, Words of Radiance spoilers should be in spoiler tags. While yes it is publicly availiable, there are many who refrain from reading spoiler material and we should respect their wishes in not being spoiled.
  24. We don't really know. We think he/she is the person the Lord Ruler named Luthadel after. Elendel is named after Elend, so it would follow Luthadel was named after "Lutha" (or Luthad, but most people go with Lutha).
