  1. AKA "Hold the fate of the world on his arms syndrome."
  2. Woah, really? That is really really interesting. A nexus huh? Let me find it...
  3. Allright, this is what I think. Seons and Skaze are Splinters, pieces of the power of Dominion and Devotion that are non-human (check the definition of a Splinter here). caused by the death of the Shards, propogated by Odium. Whether they did this voluntarily so that some of their power could be salvaged, or whether this caused their Splintering, or was a natural result of the Splintering, remains to be seen. We tend to categorize Spren into a huge lump, like the people of Roshar do. I think this is false. I think there are normal Spren, caused by the death of Honor, and Nahel-Spren, Splinters created by Honor (and perhaps Cultivation). I think when Honor died, naturally his power broke into little pieces (Chips? Flakes?) that became the spren that appear wherever the Stormlight touches. Why? Because we know during Dalinar's visions, Honor is around, (because he mentions the fall of the Knight Radiants, the most current of the visions), and he doesn't see Spren. I think that's because normal Spren aren't around till after Honor dies. Now Nahel Spren. We know these exist before the death of Honor, because Nohaden mentions them. He talks about how the "Nahel Bond doesn't seem to make men any wiser", and mentions that "not all spren are as discerning as honorspren". (pg 849) I believe that these are purposeful Splinters of Honor (and Cultivation?) created so that men could fight the Desolations, eventually organized into the Knights Radiant. EDIT- I was thinking, and perhaps there should be a name for what happened to Honor, who broke into an incredible number of small objects (Chips) instead of a quantifiable number of Splinters(like Seons). I think Shattering should work, compared to Splintering for Devotion.
  4. I agree. It seems to make sense. However, I don't think that the Reod would've destroyed the planet. Just because the magic system is not currently functioning properly doesn't meant that the power of the shard (or its sentience) has been limited. Also, what's your take on Roshar? It seems pretty clear that without Honor and Cultivation, Odium would've (and may be in the process of) destroying the world. But what about Honor and Cultivation without Odium? Or even just Honor? Those seem productive environments . And it seems that Cultivation would work pretty well with Endowment. They both encourage growth, one by helping things grow, the other by sacrificing to give.
  5. In regards to the "return to men the Shards they once bore" I originally thought the same as you- and still do a little bit. There's a good chance of this having a double meaning. But keep in mind that Shards is also a name for Shardblades and Shardplate. So rather than talking about someone taking up Honor, it could just mean (and Dalinar will likely interpret it as) 'fixing' the Shardplate and Shardblade so that it glows, like it did with the Knights Radiant. This might be done by making oaths, as has been theorized about.
  6. That's not entirely true. At the Alloy Q&A the question was asked "Can Drabs Return", and the answer is "Drabs will not become Returned. There's something else that can happen there, but they will not become Returned." That is, if I remember that right. I wish someone had a recording of that interview so I could make a transcription....
  7. Farewell. I hope you serve an honorable mission. See you in 3 years! (I leave next year)

  8. Alcrataz the Inevitable
  9. Indeed, from his last Europe tour, we have reference that it isn't genetic: Now this is an after-the-fact report, but I think that there is evidence here that your actions that you perform is what attracts Spren with Nahel Bond capabilities.
  10. Wasing the prize of having the hope. Reading the trueness of the eligibility. Wasing of the happiness of the self.
  11. Yes. It's called the Brandonothology. What are you referring to Peter? As in strict book revelations, like the Taravangian info here? Or all the behind the scenes info as well? Because in that case, it really will be the a lot of the Brandonothology. All the cosmere info, the magic explanations, the character explanations, and the worldbuilding explanations takes up a lot of room. EDIT- grammar I guess if we take a long hard look at a lot of the info he's given us, taking out the character explanations and wordbuilding inspirations, giving just the Taravangian-like info, as well as magic explanations, that would take out a lot of the information. I'll have to take a look at it too.
  12. I'm not so sure. I would actually say that Death is end-neutral. After all, Drabs can't become Returned. This seems to imply that the Breath stays with you- even if you can't give it to others at that point.
  13. I disagree with the alters- I think they would reflect the four Figures of Survivorism we see in the original Trilogy- Kelsier the Survivor of Hathsin, Vin the Lady Heir/Ascendant Warrior, Sazed the Holy Announcer, and Spook, the Survivor of the Flames/Lord Mistborn. Also, the Survivor does something else- He appears to his followers. Alloy of Law pg. 268 I assume that this is TenSoon, who still has Kelsier's bones, and who has a chance of listening to him, since he's still meddling.
  14. How "Allomantically inert" is Aluminum? We've seen that it has blocked Cognitve efforts in the forms of Rioting and Soothing, as well as Physical efforts of Pushing and Pulling. Does it work Spiritually as well? Or, in more specific terms: Would an Aluminum room double as a Coppercloud? Would an Aluminum hat keep you free from Feruchemist Connectors? Is Mister Suit/Ladrian a Chromium Ferring (Fortune)? Is that how he's so good at Betting at the Stables? EDIT- Why, by the Survivor's Deadly Name, do TenSoon and Marsh/Survivor and Ironeyes appear to a Mortician? Was it on purpose or on accident? RAFO Double EDIT- One of the early typo's that was mentioned in the Way of King ARC was the numbering (changing from three to 3) in the chapter-header-death-quotes. Peter said he and the editor saw that too, but then you explained something to them, and they understood why you did it. Why did you do it? 3x EDIT- At the Alloy release, you mentioned that Seons go crazy when their master goes through the Shaod, because the Shaod messes with the master spiritually, and so it messes a TON with the Seons. This seems to imply that there is some sort of bond with the Seons. Is this similar to the Nahel Bonds? Also, if Kelsier hadn't of taken up Preservation, what would've happened (ignoring Ruin)? Would there suddenly be objects throughout the land like Spren? (Only to be asked when he hasn't been asked a Cosemere question in a while) Any hints on specific dates for our timeline of the Cosmere? Like two numerical dates you can say happened at the same time? (Example TLR's ascension and the Reod) What is Nohaden's real name? 4x EDIT- In WoK, Ishik (the fish guy) talks about "how it's only safe to talk about these things in a holy grotto". Does this holy grotto happen to be lined with sparkling, glowing, spheres? Or something else? So do Returned eat their own Breath for the first week? Is that why Drab's can't return? Also, why do some Breaths flare right before death? Vasher mentions it. 5x- Where is Jezrien? You told that to Terez on her WoK. Is Jezrien the "Stormfather", or whoever Kaladin talks to? Or is he a character in the books? 6x- If two Drabs have a kid, will their child be a Drab? If Suseborn used his Breath, would he stay alive due to his massive amounts of Breath? Never mind, I figured out the answer. If you were to measure how much energy the Reod-Elantrians got from the Dor, would it be equivalent to a Breath a week? 7x In WoA, we have two strange "A voice seemed to come in his head" experiences. One with Sazed when Marsh attacks him. The other is with Elend, when he attacks the koloss. It gives him advice on how to fight with a dagger. Is this Kelsier? 8x Do Iron chemings/ferrings have a gravitational pull to them? If you had a Iron Twinborn, could they become a planet and have things orbiting around them? You've said that time bubbles are tied by spiritual gravitational bonds. Is this in real time, or at the creation point? And is it of the Allomancer, or of the bubble? I don't think it can be the bubble because it seems like the bubble doesn't have any mass. 9x Demoux, in WoA, says that the "normal world" prophecies that he preaches (yellow sun, green plants, blue sky) just seems to "fit". Is this because of Kelsier wispering to Demoux? After all, that's who Demoux has faith in. How exactly does faith allow Shards to communicate with humans? How is Nightblood able to talk with people? 10x I was rereading some of Mile's bits, where he's talking about how he was out to change the world, how he had to be more than a common thief, that with Mystery, power, a pinch of magic, he could work wonders for his cause. I was thinking about how that sort of worked for Kelsier in Mistborn. And then I realized- Vin "killed" herself and Ati, right? By immersing their minds together, which were so opposite? But Vin is still accessible to Sazed- still in the same place that Kelsier and Elend are. So then I was thinking- What if they weren't alone? If Vin's mind was able to be at that spot where Sazed could speak with her, then could Ati perhaps be there too? Since you'll be obscure and say "It's possible that Ati was there", I'll make my question more direct: "Is Ati's mind in the same space that Elend's and Vin's are at the end of Hero of Ages?" EDIT 11x- What color are Jezrien's eyes? And does he still have the same fashion sense he used to in terms of color? (Note to self- Is it the head of the Kobalt Gaurd?) Edit 12x- When ruin changes words, is he actually changing the written words, or is he changing what people see? (Note to self- Dragonsteel?) How long from the end of HoA was Elantris (about)? We have ties to all the other books in terms of HoA, it would be nice to tie Elantris down so we can start comparing histories in the books. Hoid was there when Adonalsium shattered correct? You told Miyabi that he was, but it would be nice to have it on tape. Is the beggar in the prologue of Way of Kings Hoid? (Or Jezrien? Terez's singed book said "Where's Jezrien?" Did Kaladin kill Shallan's brother? (Kaladin kills a Shardbearer Ghostblood when Amaram makes him a slave, and Shallan's family is deeply involved in Ghostbloods. Also, her oldest brother dies at about the same time as Kaladin kills the Shardbearer). Edit 13x- Honorspren- general name for Nahel Spren, or just Windrunner spren? And what is the name for the Symbolspren/Truthspren/Shallanspren/Symbolheads? Edit 14x- What happens to Nahel Bonds (what I believe is the bond between Syl and Kaladin, as well as probably Shallan and Truthspren) during the Time of Weeping? You know, the long dull storm that doesn't have any Stormlight? Edit 15x- (Yes, I'm still putting them here. At this point, I just want one place that I can look for My Questions. I suppose I could title this my own Book of Endless Pages. Or something similar) 5/23/12- I've got an interesting one. Does the knowledge of Hemalurgy come naturally to Ruin? Or is it something that was learned over time? I'm just wondering if Ruin knows everything there is to know about Hemalurgy.
  15. I had the same thing happen to me (about not understanding the topic you started) when I dared to dabble in Relativity here:

  16. Although Arsteel isn't Lightsong, he still does show up in Warbreaker. Look at one of Vasher's early viewpoints when he looks at Denth from a far. Or just check out the Brandonothology. It's in there somewhere....

  17. And we didn't notice Hoid until what, his fifth book? Anywho, welcome Deus es Biotica! We're glad you're here and contributing.
  18. Hello, and welcome to the first 17th Shard Newscast, brought to you this week by your friendly neighborhood Worldsinger, Zas678. So we'll cover three or so topics each week, and keep you up to date on any contests, signings, and other Brandon related news. We won't cover WoT stuff very often, so if you're interested in that, go check out theoryland.com, or follow terez27 on twitter. We'll try and keep non spoiler stuff for the first part of the post, but after the spoiler mark, we assume you've read all the books. First off the weekly stuff. Brandon has released his twitter posts (which includes the torchat where he answered some questions), a new chapter of Mythwalker, Writing Excuses, and also AWESOME garner bags from Inkwing (The illustrator for Brandon's maps). In Brandon Contests, there are currently two I'm aware of. Inkwing has another t-shirt contest, Gollancz is having a massive book giveaway- all the UK versions of the Cosmere books (Although it's only open to people in UK and Ireland.) Alloy of Law has been released! Brandon did pretty well with the release and got #7 on the NYT Bestseller's list, which is pretty awesome for a side project. If you haven't read it yet, go check out the preview chapters or the artwork and then go buy the book! It's not too long, it's intense and it's funny. As a result we are currently in the midst of signings (If you're in UK, go see if he's signing near you, or buy a book from a place he's already signed), which means that we have plenty of new Q&As, from the Twitter Q&A, to the London Q&A, to the Huntington Q&A, the NYC interview and don't forget the Release Q&A! For those of you who don't want to go through all those links, here is the pertinent information we've learned so far: *SPOILER MARK* Hemalurgy doesn't require death, Dominion is the name of Skai's shard, There is a connection between the breath that comes from a person attacked by a Shardblade and the corrupted Breath that comes from Nightblood, Drabs can't come back as Returned Male kandra and female kandra have different smells, so that's how they tell if others are male or female. They also know who they are attracted to. When someone with a Seon goes through the Reod, it "messes" with them spiritually. This "messing" transfers over to their Seons, who are much more deeply affected. We also have some answers from the Alloy of Law that have been answered. Hoid is the black beggar in Joshin and Mi'chelle's wedding. He's mostly there for a cameo appearance and apparently isn't doing anything important. Brettin (the police officer) at the end of the book was killed in a non-plot related incident, so TenSoon from the original trilogy took up his body post-morterm and gave Wax a little more power. It's why Wax notices he's a little off- TenSoon didn't have time to study him before his death. MeLaan is the kandra that gave Wax his earring Kelsier is still around and is still messing. He still doesn't do good at doing what he's told. Although Ironeyes could be a kandra, he's not. He really is Marsh. The earrings are melted down from old Inquisitor spikes, which is why Harmony is able to speak into people's minds. How he reads `mind is still completely a mystery. And of course the Ars Arcanum. When asked about it, he points to the name "Nazh" that appears on the map of Elendel. He also said that it is written by a member of either the Seventeenth Shard or Hoid. Well, thank you for joining us on the first weekly update! We hope you found it useful. If you have any input on ways we could improve it, leave a comment and let us know.

  20. Err... That's what I meant! Nice job. Hopefully you did awesome in the Math subject area.

  21. I agree with Green Mistborn Hoodie. It makes sense that spren are physical shadows of cognitive items, fueled by spiritual energy (Notice how there aren't any Spren in Shinovar?), and that the spheres we see in the Shadesmar is the cognitive shadow of the physical items. EDIT- And to reply to Featherwriter, maybe that's what the Nahel Bond does. It "binds" a mostly physical thing with a mostly cognitive thing, and we get things that are better at both. We see that Syl is able to pick up the leaves, and Kaladin is able to mimic Syl and gather energy from the Stormlight.
  22. Hey- how did you do on your GMAT?

  23. I think that a non-death spike will take a LOT more than a Breath does. A Breath won't kill you- it only takes a small portion of your spiritual (possibly cognitive) self. It makes you a little more grumpy, a little more irritable, and truly isn't that bad to go around for a week or so. On the other side, when Brandon was talking about a spike, it was in the order of "if you're careful, they *might* survive." And it seemed like it takes a lot more than a Breath, or at least is much more violent in the way it removes it. I guess you might make it look like an ice cube. When you take an ice cube and punch a whole through it, the ice is not likely to survive, unless you're really skilled and really careful. But then you still have a giant jagged hole in the middle of your ice cube, and it's much more fragile. Breath is more like two ice cubes that are generally together, but you can take one away and put it somewhere else if you want to, then bring it back with pretty much no change. Does that make sense? Spikes are removing something that isn't supposed to be removed, and so it tends to take (and Ruin) a bunch of the spiked person. Breath are easily removed, transferred, and then taken back again, so there isn't any loss involved.
