Perhaps it’s more like control building and platform ...I’ll have to think some more.

The alloy vs elemental metal issue on Scadrial makes it obvious that mixtures don’t have the same properties as their component ingredients. That doesn’t COMPLETELY negate the weirdness of aluminum showing up in so much of the important gems. (I mean, yeah, it really does, but whatever. It’s a fun, weird, coincidence.)
-
With all the discussion of Aluminum AND talking about how ruby and sapphire are corundum, how did you miss that corundum is Al2O3? And for that matter, topaz is Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, emerald and heliodor as beryl are Be3Al2(SiO3)6, and at least one form of garnet (almandine) is Fe3Al2Si3O12. So six of the important gems on Roshar include 2 Aluminum atoms...diamond, zircon, smokestone, and amythest don't, but...there's got to be more to that connection. Aluminum is weird and now it shows up in 60% of the gemstones.

Is the 17th Shard (in world) breaking their own strictures?
Juanaton posted a question in Cosmere Q&A
If the 17th Shard is supposed to be non-interventionist, like Frost, how do they justify trying to catch Hoid and make him stop intervening? Isn't that an example of them intervening? Also, am I correct in believing the 17th Shard to be non-interventionist? -
Except of course in their actual clergy. The Ardent's all do whichever things they feel like doing. The ONLY accommodation the female Ardent's make is to wear a glove on their safehand. There are female fighting Ardents, male scholar Ardents, etc. Absolutely no gender roles in the religion if you are in the clergy.

I don't think the Stormfather will ever serve as a Shardblade. He indicates that being bound in such a way to become a blade would make it possible for Dalinar to kill him and he isn't going to let that happen. Aside from their use as a weapon, we've seen that living Shardblades are the keys that allow operation of the Oathgates...which Dalinar did without forming a blade, although that disturbed the Stormfather too. I find it interesting that Brandon says Dalinar doesn't get armor. That kind of hurts the theory that the geometric shapes (around Dalinar in the vision with Venli and Jasnah at Thaylen Field) are proto-Shardplate since we wouldn't expect Dalinar to get them if they are proto-Plate and he doesn't get plate...

Thoughts, Questions, and Potential Novel Insights
Juanaton replied to Skryter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Which actually seems to fit the portion of the original question. Since we know Tanavast and Cultivation's Vessel (do we know her name?) were romantically involved, it would stand to reason that they would decide to be close together in the physical realm as well.- 6 replies

Why didn't Harmony help the Southern continent people
Juanaton replied to Solarserpent's topic in Mistborn
I'm pretty sure even now he's still Sazed. It bothers him immensely that he must restrain himself from preventing suffering, maiming, etc. His conversation with Wax in the carriage reveals that while he now recognizes the necessity of the possibility of murderers, etc. He, Sazed, doesn't LIKE having to let people murder. In short, he acknowledges the restrictions that being a Shard places on him, but that doesn't mean he likes those restrictions. -
I think there might be another piece of evidence towards this that you perhaps didn’t notice because of your focus only on the two versions of this one story. If you look at all the other stories Hoid tells, he doesn’t give any definitive answers to anything. He tells the story and the listener decides on the moral. In this one he makes a declaration and contradicts Shallan when she says “How should I know?” Hoid makes clear the girl was BOTH bold and foolish,

A Weapon Capable of Killing Adonalsium: The Dead Metal
Juanaton replied to Blightsong's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I’m not taking a side in this argument, but I would like to point out the WoB is that aluminum can cleanse UNWANTED effects of other investiture. Which seems to imply that the desired effects would remain and not be cleansed. Want to have a void spren trapped so you can keep a Regal form but don’t want to be opened up to Odium’s control? Cleanse yourself carefully with some aluminum. Possibly. -
I doubt it. Windyl tells Lift about how a bunch of the Cultivation spren decided together that he should bond Lift at least in part because she had previously visited the Mother (Cultivation). It didn’t happen simultaneously to her boon/curse from that visit (storm light from food instead of gems/partial existence in the Cognitive Realm), although it is apparently at least part of why she got the specific spren she did.

What does seeing the future is of the Voidbringers REALLY mean?
Juanaton replied to animalia's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was thinking about the significance of Renarin starting a blacked out portion in Odium’s expansion on the Diagram. I suspect it is something similar to (very minor mistborn spoiler) Basically a scry vs scry problem. Odium wouldn’t have so much of a problem with that (I think) if it was his investiture fueling Renarin’s future sight. But since Cultivation can also do that, and I think, at least in spirit, Renarin and Glys are far closer to Cultivation than to Odium, her power is blanking/blocking out Odium’s ability to read and predict things when Renarin is involved. -
This benefit is what cyclists are exploiting when they engage in "blood doping." They donate some of their own blood long enough before the race for their body to replenish its usual supply, then put that blood back into their body right before the race so that they can more efficiently supply oxygen to their muscles during the race. Gaspers would have a small but measurable advantage over nonGaspers in endurance races...less than A-pewter, but still an advantage.

Yeah...Era 1 was funky. The Northern Dominance isn't the northernmost dominance...that would be the Central Dominance. So as far as I can tell, Fadrex City is actually in the "far north" of the Western Dominance while whatever the unnamed town on the way to Tathingdwen is called is in the "far south" of the Western Dominance. Rust this polar coordinate system.

Yeah, I wasn’t clear (again). I had been thinking what I posted above and the WoB you posted confirmed my thinking that she must have regressed because giving a blade to a 1st ideal radiant didn’t make sense so I was appreciating that...

I’ve been thinking she had to be somewhere around truth 6 or 7 now since she had a freaking shardblade as a little kid and then started telling truths again. And yes, I know that would be too many. Unless Lightweavers get their blade after the Ideal of Radiance, there is no way Shallan has only completed truth 4...unless she regressed.

That’s why I included the part about doing himself permanent injury. Can he not even cause himself pain? That’s taking it further than I thought it went.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Juanaton replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, but while you can predict the future you are not granted the ability to know the future, so your predictions are really just guesses. I wish for the ability to know the curse associated with a potential wish and one additional wish. -
So I wonder How old is Lift Really

Did the Vessels know the intent of the Shard they chose before ascending to that Shard? IIRC, the intent of a Shard is not identical to the name of the Shard, though they are related.

Juanaton replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think it's in the Baxil interlude where they mention that visiting the Nightwatcher isn't a game, she doesn't trick you, so you can't "phrase your request perfectly." You ask for something, she gives you what SHE thinks you need and a curse to go with it. Lift may have asked to stay the same and never grow up (a la Peter Pan), but I don't think that was the boon granted. Also, I think she visited with Cultivation, not just the Nightwatcher, so I'm not convinced she actually has a curse. Dalinar believed his curse was not being able to remember Evie or even hear her name...but with the revelations in Oathbringer, that seems to be what allowed him to develop to the point where he could deal with what he had done in a healthier way than by crawling into a bottle and never coming out. With Lift, she gained the ability to metabolize food into stormlight and (perhaps this is linked) to exist physically part way in the cognitive realm and part way in the physical realm all the time. If she has a curse, I don't think we've seen it.- 20 replies

Can a nonSeeker differentiate between being Soothed and being Rioted?
Juanaton replied to Juanaton's question in Cosmere Q&A
But that’s my point...Breeze makes people feel brave, not by increasing their bravery, but by damping everything else so bravery is the thing they feel most strongly. Allriane achieves the same thing by actually increasing their feeling of bravery. In both cases it’s a relative difference that makes the person feel brave. If your base emotional level is 10, can you tell the difference between brave = 10, everything else = 5 and brave = 20, everything else = 10?
