Gavilar killed so Dalinar would succeed?
frozndevl replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Very good point about the soldiers with the gemstones in their beards. That is another point to the fact that the Parshendi know more than most about stormlight as they are able to recognize what Kaladin is doing enough that they can attempt to contain it. -
I see the situation of him not being able to relinquish his blade as more a part of his Oath than anything more. It has been posited that the sword plays some role in his being Truthless.

Gavilar killed so Dalinar would succeed?
frozndevl replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think you missed my point. The Parshendi aren't adapting or showing new tactics, they are just bringing more soldiers. Maybe if we are splitting hairs, this is an adaptation to superior numbers, but I wouldn't say new tactics. New Tactics would entail your opposition bringing 2x the soldiers, and you find a way to be competitive with your same size army, but utilize different techniques, strategy, armament, etc. -
Really, are we going to turn this thread into a discussion about how sex is only "okay" if the people are married? I may be new here and not know everyone that well, but this statement seems a bit off since sex works the same married or not, and can produce kids in both situations. If this was sarcasm, I missed it.

I'm not sure that I would say that the Parshendi are adapting their tactics. I seem to recall from mentions in the book that they know exactly how many soldiers to bring to any of the plateau battles, and bringing 2x as many since Dalinar and Sadeas brought both armies follows that statement. -
*boom* Sound of midn blowing up! Though, a simple explanation would of course be Hoid and since Dragonsteel is at least in part Hoid's story, that would explain the hidden epic part.

I think it's pretty great. I think that Whelan did a great job of channeling DKS in his rendition for the cover. I am curious as to where in the book this takes place because I am sure that Michael Whelan does as he always does, reads the book and finds a scene that captures the essence of the book and uses that.

The Emperor's Soul *Elantris Spoilers*
frozndevl replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Hasn't it been said that the magic present on a given world is in essence, a natural occurence based on the Shards on the world? Wouldn't this preclude (though of course things change or maybe my understanding is lacking) two Shards actively working together to create magic systems since magic just sort of "happens" when they are present? -
So, if Nightblood is drawn and fighting against a Shardblade, what would happen? 1) Would the Shardblade disintegrate? 2) Would Nightblood be cut in half because it is inanimate? 3) Would Nightblood lose it's Breath (being that Breath is from souls) and then become an inanimate object to be cut on the next slice?

Chapter 47 Annotation *Spoilers everywhere*
frozndevl replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Warbreaker
Sorry to thread necro, but I just read the book and am reading through the forums. I think that it would still take a signficant amount of Breath to create another Nightblood-esque object, even if they have become more efficient for two reasons. 1) Metal / stone are more difficult to Awaken anyway, (8th Heightening?). 2) A sword is nowhere near the form of a human, which requires more Breath. As the story goes, we see what Vasher does with his Breath and he uses up probably several hundred Breath just in making his super-suit (legs, arms, cape, etc). Vasher is one of the best Awakeneres ever, and he is still burdened by some what would be basic Awakenings taking so many Breath. -
So one question I had was about Denth and his sister. It isn't explicitly stated, but I would assume that all five of the scholars were Returned. So what made them special enough that they both died and were able to return?

A Memory of Light: Hopes and Expectations
frozndevl replied to .S.A.M.K.M's topic in The Wheel of Time
I haven't gone back and reread the books in some years, just read the latest as it has come out so my theory-fu is quite weak. However, I got the distinct impression that the Ogier were preparing to leave the world, probably via portal stones, in much the same way that they came to the world. I am vaguely remembering that the Ogier and the tree-folk (the last of which died in EotW) came from another plane of existence. What I am most looking forward to is how the plot points are twisted to still meet the dictates of prophecy, but in ways that we hadn't considered. I also don't think that any of the main characters will die, including Rand, since I can't recall any other major characters actually dying, just becoming under-powered or "sent to the farm". I don't count dead Forsaken as, well, they are evil and the bad guys do get killed. -
I think it is just be seen assaulting the King's chamber. Death by shard-blade is pretty obvious in-world so no one would need to actually see the death strike. There would be a correct assumption made by all parties that the assassin in white, that assaulted the king and was seen wielding a shard-blade, would be responsible for the king's death; Occam's Razor.

Man, I miss being able to devour the books as fast as I used to. However, I'll add to the chorus as someone who started out with WoT, and then found Brandon after he took the reins. Of all the books, the worst for me was probably Fires of Heaven, that was one hellaciously long, and for me, slow / dull book. It's also good to read from the beginning because although Brandon does a great job of continuing the voice of each character, it is a bit different. Reading from the beginning, you have the chance to read each of the characters as envisioned and written by their creator.

Since the thread was necro'd, I'll respond to this question. We have examples from AOL of Wayne moving about inside his bubble, and I believe some confirmation from on high that the bubble is fixed in some way to the planet. Whether by gravity or some other mechanism I can't be sure.

I don't have the ebook and my hardcover is at home, but knowing BS to be very careful in how he does things, does he capitazize the H in "honorspren"? And does he capitalize the first letter when describing a generic "firespren"? If he does capitalize the H, then I'm leaning towards Honorspren being a proper name for a group of different spren. So Syl may be a windspren, who through interaction with Kaladin gains her sentience through the exchange and then evolves into an HonorSpren. If this happens for other spren, this could be an example of concurrent evolution, just on a very immediate basis, and although she is now an HonorSpren, she retains the base of what she was, a windspren. Also, in early Christian culture, God was in the East, not up, if I remember correctly. Subsequently, maps were made to have East at the top instead of North. Also, the twist on the "where honor lies" bit relating to the Truthless is quite clever. I hope that turns into something.

Mistborn Adventure Game is Out + Contest!

Woot! -
From my recollection, Kaladin and Syl were near Adolin only a handful of times. The epic fight, where everyone was probably too busy to talk about the blade, the very end when Dalinar gives up his blade, and also in the market when Adolin saves the prostitute (I think). I can't remember the circumstances of the market incident, but I don't believe that Adolin summoned his blade at that time. Putting this together, there may have either been no opportunity to comment on Adolin's (the blade wasn't summoned), everyone was too busy (helping Kaladin be a badass), or the focus was on another particular blade (Dalinar's). Edit: Just read in another thread someone that does remember the shardblade being summoned in the market. Scratch my theory then.

So, brand new here since I just finished the book last night, which means I have thoughts / theories that have probably been previously debunked and I just haven't had a chance to find out yet. That being said, let's talk about Dalinar giving away his Shards. I seem to remember, although I did finish the book up late last night, that Dalinar felt a sort of relief / good feeling when he gave up the sword. If I am remember correctly, and we use Syl's reaction to a Shardblade as a guide, then perhaps Dalinar was feeling a bit of the bad mojo coming from the sword.
