Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Jondesu replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
My medical issues (discussed previously) have kept me out of work since January. Until the end of July, however, I was getting short term disability payments, which weren't completely covering our expenses, but we only ate up a bit of our savings. Then, the leave servicing company decided there wasn't sufficient medical information to confirm that I still needed to be out of work, so they bumped me onto unpaid medical leave. I don't know why that's okay, but not short term disability, but we're working on an appeal. In the meantime, though, our account balance dropped like a rock with nothing coming in and medical expenses plus normal stuff coming out. jW -
Looks like I've moved on to more creative and scientific endeavors as an Artifabrian. Maybe I can solve the Fabrial elevator trick. jW

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Jondesu replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
Our bank account has just dropped way too close to zero for my comfort. We've always maintained a healthy account and never lived month to month, but I haven't had a paycheck in a couple months now. Basically, this royally sucks. jW -
I read the original Ender's Game series, and then Ender's Shadow as well. I just found out about the prequels, though: Earth Unaware is the first one. I read that and I'm trying to get a copy of Earth Afire from one of the libraries near me. Those are really good so far too. They're about the First Formic War, which we knew hardly anything about from the original books. jW

Why Mistborn or Full Feruchemists did not have "mixing effects"?
Jondesu replied to Oversleep's question in Cosmere Q&A
In fact, we don't know that these effects exist in the way you describe, instead of just the ability to do otherwise impossible things by using the powers together. There's a significant lack of information so far to go on. jW -
So, I took over a gym today and figured why leave my best Pokémon to defend it? Did this instead. Little runt held the gym on his own for over an hour. jW

He also doesn't mention Shalash. He says "he" when referring to the Herald that will be included. Of course, like you said, this may have changed drastically, and I'd like to see a newer source mentioning the rest. jW

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!

Ooh, I almost forgot, I had a Nokia (not the 3310, but I don't remember the exact model) with exchangeable faceplates. I got myself one that slid down when you pushed a button on the side. Right after The Matrix came out. Yep, I felt cool for a while. I wasn't, but I felt like I was. (I did later have the venerable Motorola Razr, two different versions of it, in fact, including the one with a dragon tattoo etched into it.) EDIT: Perhaps we should stop derailing this thread and make one for cell phones? jW -
I had posted my own theory about the meaning of Dominion in the case of the Shard, going from a more Biblical definition (one you might not find in many dictionaries since it's not common usage now). Think of Genesis if you're familiar with it, and God giving Adam and Eve dominion over the land. It was territory/governance, yes, but also a responsibility to tend and tame it (I was going to say cultivate, but of course that's another Shard). I will say, though, that it's likely that the way magic is used on Sel changed dramatically with the shattering and the Dor being moved to the CR, unless it for some reason was already there in a more tame way. jW

True… but did we need to resurrect a 6 year old thread to point that out? EDIT: I didn't even know about the Cosmere or Brandon Sanderson 6 years ago. jW

I love that idea, and it helps explain why it wouldn't just be constantly draining their Stormlight (which would be a major issue). I'm not completely familiar with how a feedback loop works, though I understand the general concept (had to install a ground loop isolator for my car because of an audio hum ), so maybe someone else can weigh in on how likely it is that would be the way it would function, but I think you're probably on the right track. jW

I've got something better: jW -
Hoid definitely shows up in a lot of places before Mistborn, but he never makes reference to that (though we also simply never get a chance like we did with our Radiants). I wonder if his Feruchemical "luck" or whatever it happens to be is a recent addition, though, since he's disappearing from one place or another quite a bit in WoK and WoR, and says that it doesn't work as well as he'd like (implying to me that he's somewhat new at using that talent, at least in relative terms). He may have indeed gained Feruchemy and Allomancy both during or around the time of Mistborn (with or without the Lerasium, since we still don't know exactly what he did with that). Edit: Before that, I would imagine he had to do a lot more manual research and searching. If any of the Shards are friendly to him (Edgli maybe, or some we haven't met), they might have provided some help and information as well. jW

I think the biggest flaw in Awakening with Stormlight is that Stormlight doesn't carry a piece of your Cognitive, or its own Cognitive aspect, like Breath seems to. There's no inherent way to send a Command to an Awakened object with it, so there would need to be more of a hack involved simply to do that, beyond the fact that it's not sticky and leaks out. jW

I got my first cell phone in high school (don't remember exactly what year): the venerable Nokia 3310. I kept that for a while, and also had a few other phones in that time before the smartphone really put in an appearance. I'm a giant Apple nerd, so when the iPhone came out I was absolutely fascinated, but I didn't manage to get any type of smartphone for a long time after; I got an Android phone in 2012 I think, then switched to an iPhone not long after, by getting a used one from a friend. I didn't get my first new iPhone until two years ago. For reference, though, I'm 31, so it was a different scene when I was in high school. I was still one of the last of my friends to get a phone, though. jW -
Lol, that's crazy. Yeah, it makes sense that there would be some form of rotation, but it could even be a band stretching from pole to pole, all the way around the planet (that would be insanely weird, but hey, it's a magical storm). Lots of possibilities still. jW

Nightblood is indeed Awakened Steel (or perhaps some other metal, I don't know if we have confirmation), just using a different process that resulted in the Type IV entity. He's simply not a non-sentient awakened entity, which would be Type III as you said, but that doesn't change the fact that he's steel/metal, and Awakened. jW

It's surprisingly difficult to run a giveaway that can be legal in more than a few countries. Some countries even within the EU have contradictory laws, so the same giveaway pretty much can't be legal in both places. jW

I'm fairly sure it wasn't 100% confirmed that Vasher went to Roshar, just that he had seen a Shardblade and was trying to make something like it. jW

Do the highstorms rotate like a hurricane/typhoon, or does it have a different shape and movement pattern? Does the entire highstorm pass over the continent of Roshar, or does a small/large portion of it miss the continent entirely? (Credit to @Child of Hodor for the idea: Post from The Origin of Storms thread) jW
-
Thanks, looks like probably early 2014 based on the times of the ones before and after (both were March 2014 I think). Looks like just about that same time, a month after maybe, is when I can find the first references/confirmation that the continent is based on the Julia Set, so it's possible that's all he was talking about there. I still really like your theory. jW
-
I feel a need to point this out: Tolkien himself said Sam was the real hero of the story. He also got as much time as Frodo, and IIRC there wasn't really in-head perspectives for the most part, so they were honestly focused on just about equally I think. jW
-
@Child of Hodor, was that a recent signing? I know he's confirmed that the landmass on Roshar is shaped based on the Julia Set (something I don't actually understand, but smarter people do), but that doesn't mean we know why, as you said. The idea of the other side of Roshar basically being a huge stationary storm with arms that sweep out to wash over the continent is fascinating, and would explain at least in part the fact that Highstorms aren't precisely regular, and yet are predicatable: there's not multiple storms, but the multiple arms would seem like it to the people on Roshar, albeit predictable enough for the Stormwardens to track a pattern. I've been meaning to add to the list of questions for Brandon something like "do the Highstorms rotate like tropical cyclones here on Earth?" jW
