  1. Quintus followed Stick's arm and realized what was happening. Grateful for the excuse not to make further conversation, and for someone else to be potentially in trouble, he leaned back against the wall next to Stick (not so close as to appear forward or familiar with her, of course), and watched the scene play out. Sanis was normally sure on his feet, but seemed to struggle briefly with his robe, and Lumina appeared ready to capitalize on the situation. She was about to be the butt of the joke, however, and Quintus wasn't at all sure that wouldn't lead to a duel, so he considered stepping in and stopping the girl trying to place it. His usual desire to remain out of harm's way took over, though, and he remained where he was. This was a party, after all. Surely no one would actually duel during the party anyways. He was still standing there as Brown-Piercing strode confidently into the hall (very unusual name that was for a Gold, though there had been other unusual names around as well, such as, well, Stick). The man's reputation preceded him, and Quintus' interest was piqued as he strode familiarly up to Tiberius, ignoring the potential fall if Tiberius were inclined to shove him off. As Brown (the Gold) made his way down the steps, though, Quintus observed his cautious gaze sweeping over the crowd, as if searching. Quintus straightened up. Did Tiberius have suspicions about the Lancers at his own party? These were his most loyal and effective followers, for the most part. Surely someone like Stick, or Khazad, or Lumina, wouldn't be a danger to Tiberius, right? He didn't know everyone here, and of course someone like the Jackal was someone only trusted with caution, but he didn't know of anyone here who he was sure would pose a danger. He'd have to keep his own eyes open, for his own sake as well as his liege's.
  2. True, but the one interesting difference would be that only those who the town jailed could be brought back. Others would be dead for good. jW
  3. So this is a huge thread, and thus I apologize if this has been suggested before, but I had an idea I'd love to see tested. I saw there was a mention of a prisoner/jailer role mechanic, but it seemed to be merely an extra role in addition to the usual cycle of a mafia kill and a lunching each cycle. What if instead the lynching was completely replaced by a jailing or a similar RP mechanic? Townspeople placed in jail wouldn't be silenced, but they wouldn't cast votes. They could also be broken out of jail or set free by the lawmen, probably only once per game for each side. No one would be permanently eliminated by the town that way, just neutralized with a small chance of returning. You could even allow the town to choose to free a prisoner rather than jailing someone during each day cycle. jW
  4. Thirst and hunger eventually overcame Quintus' desire to remain unobtrusive, so he took the opportunity of a gap in the people milling around to slip through the crowd and grab a drink. Unfortunately, he then turned around and nearly spilled it all over a lancer's tunic. He peered nervously up into Stick's face, who he hadn't notice lurking in a corner (much as he himself had been doing), but seeing the familiar expression of resignation and determination to not let this be a complete waste of time on her face, he ventured an attempt at conversation despite his lisp. He couldn't always remain silent, of course. "Good evening, Lansther Sthick. How are you thisth fine day?" (Wow, I might should have chosen something other than a lisp, that's going to be weird to use in dialog.)
  5. Quintus slipped quietly into the hall, determined to avoid the gazes of as many other Lancers as possible, and conversation entirely if he could. Renewing his vows to Tiberius took all of his force of will in order to pronounce the words crisply and clearly; he had no leeway like Sanis, whose words had sent shudders through his spine. Around the room, he recognized several Lancers: Khazad was as unmistakable as always, though he seemed wary; Tenebrum and Lumina he had run into at times, albeit briefly. At least one person seemed completely out of place, openly wondering in a low voice what kind of place this was. Quintus frowned. Her hair wasn't pure gold, but it wasn't simply burnished or faded. It had some very unusual mix of colors, with some strands and patches in different shades, unlike anything he'd seen before. This stranger was no normal Gold, and would bear watching. Quietly from the periphery though, of course, where he could remain unchallenged and unseen by most.
  6. I'm enjoying it so far, though he emphasizes the words for things that don't exist in our language too much for my liking. I don't even know that I can describe it exactly, but in some books I feel pulled into the world by the descriptions, and in others I feel jarred every time they bring up a weird word because it feels forced. This one leans a bit towards the latter, but not enough to make the book unenjoyable. There's a reason I didn't finish it during the 3 week loan originally and had to borrow it again, though. It just wasn't quite engaging enough to make me pull it up instead of other books I was reading at the time. jW
  7. Agreed. It's a reread for me, and it wasn't spectacular, but I watched the show (on MTV, so you know it wasn't great either) and it reminded me of some of the more interesting world building elements, like being set in the future of the United States, even though none of them know what the world was really like before. jW
  8. Just finished Red Rising and I'm trying to borrow Golden Sun. Also have The Sword of Shannara and The Aeronaut's Windlass, open, while The Lies of Locke Lamora, Cloud Atlas, and several Star Wars books (Revan, The Last Jedi, Crosscurrent, Riptide) are on the Kindle ready for me. I also have the Suicide Squad volumes 4-5 to read (the "comics"). jW
  9. I finished Red Rising, but I'm still waiting for Golden Sun to be available to borrow from the library. In the meantime, here's my first attempt at some RP. Edit: Whoops, I just reread the original post and realized you asked us to not provide a house name. Shall I simply edit that out of these posts and go with simply "Quintus"? Quintus au Tribellius groaned and rolled out of his soft bed. Despite the comfortable sheets, his back ached and spasmed. Another perceived insult had lead to another beatdown, and had this time even led to a knife in his back. While it hadn't hit anything vital, and repairing the damage was easy, he'd had too many similar injuries to simply shrug it off. No one was offended enough to kill him, usually, but he wasn't physically fit enough to fight off the other Golds when they took offense to him; that was an all too common occurrence. Slipping out into the hallway from his modest rooms (he was still a Gold, albeit a very lowborn and dull Gold), he trudged out to find something to eat, perhaps some fun (no Pinks today, not with that back, except perhaps a massage), and nearly ran into several highborn Golds, including one he thought was one of the cousins of the Bellano family. He wasn't about to give them a reason to add to his pains, and spun down another corridor to take a different path. He sighed heavily, hoping that he wouldn't pass any haemanthus patches on the way. Golds shouldn't have to deal with things like allergies, but apparently he was the exception to the rule in more ways than one, and he didn't want his nose to swell up and turn red again. That was gory embarrassing.
  10. The Highstorm is reaching Jacksonville. Not where I am, but I have family there. jW
  11. Just lost power. Still have data on my phone, intermittently, and no damage, so a lot better than I was afraid would happen. jW
  12. And, likely exacerbated by the stress of this oncoming storm, my head feels like someone stabbed a knife into the base of my skull. I can't lay all the way down, sleep is out of the question until this subsides. I took some Tylenol, but it often doesn't do much (it's just the only safe thing with my other meds), so I'm probably stuck like this until it goes away on its own. Should be a fun night... jW
  13. Trying not to get an ulcer worrying about the hurricane here. Nothing more we can change at this point except to ride it out, but I have this hard knot in my stomach/chest that isn't going away. Even this didn't help: Hello Hurricane by Switchfoot. Edit: Even Sam Adams isn't cheering me up like he usually does. jW
  14. By the 19th everything will be back to normal in that area, no worries. The coastlines will have the more long lasting impact. I have a good friend who's getting married next weekend, hoping everything is fine for her by then. I know there are/we're several weddings this weekend, though, and I can't help but think some might end up postponed. Edit: @The Honor Spren, I know why they're saying that. A lot of Floridians grab some water and a couple packs of beer or bottles of wine, and just don't take these seriously. This storm is a killer, both winds and storm surge, and they don't want anyone ignoring evacuation orders. jW
  15. I'm hunkering down for the storm now. Fortunate I'm inland unlike @The Honor Spren (glad you're not actually there, stay safe!), but we're still in the area expected to have hurricane force winds for quite a while. I had been fairly nonchalant about it until yesterday, but my stress level has been skyrocketing now, and I stayed awake until 5AM last night watching coverage and just stressing out. Too many pine trees too close to our house, a likelihood of power being out for multiple days (which for us means no running water since we're on a well with an electric pump). Some very scary possibilities. jW
  16. OOC: If I fail to respond promptly over the next few days, Hurricane Matthew may have killed my power. jW
  17. I'm pretty sure @maxal was saying Navani was the minor character, not Dalinar. She's "attached" to Dalinar's story like Adolin is attached to both Dalinar and Shallan's. jW
  18. Radiant Spren had to be around before the Recreance, though (since those are the ones bonded to the Radiants who betrayed their oaths in the Recreance) and they're intelligent spren. The number of intelligent spren has been stated or at least speculated to have increased after Honor was splintered (which is separate from the Recreance, though conceivably related in some way), but there were intelligent spren before that without a doubt. jW
  19. Cool. I'll probably manage to read Golden Sun before we get too far into the game. jW
  20. That's in fact exactly what I think happens. I think the same spren absolutely do bond with multiple generations of Radiants, and I think Syl was bonded at least once before, long ago, based on her statements about helping men kill before as @The One Who Connects said. I don't know how much they would normally lose in between bonds, but I would guess they lose most of their ability to think, but perhaps not as significantly since it wouldn't be as long normally, nor would they be held back by the Stormfather and forbidden to bond. We don't really know how intelligent spren like Syl would be in the Cognitive Realm unbonded, though, which would be another very interesting thing to find out. jW
  21. Quite interesting. Taking a bit to understand all the world building, but that's just normal learning curve. I'm enjoying it so far, and while I saw most of the plot points so far coming ahead of time, I feel like a lot of that is intentional. jW
  22. Having read part of the first book, I'm making a slight adjustment to my character. I'm now Quintus au Tribellius, a Bronze with a slight lisp, for which he is sneered at and is constantly in danger from a slip of the tongue and a misheard insult. jW
  23. Most of my gaming right now is Asphalt 8 Airborne, on my Apple TV. It's kinda cool how well it works there, though there's a controller delay that means if I switch to an iPad/iPad, I get really thrown off by how fast everything reacts (in addition to the nausea from moving the screen around). I just don't play it on anything else to avoid that issue, though. jW
  24. To be fair, that's better than actually butchering him. Oh, wait… jW
