Where Has Brandon Been? (A tour stop compilation)
StormingTexan replied to ccstat's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Wow that is a lot of traveling! Luckily I guess he can write on the plane rides. Thanks for doing this it is a cool visual. -
That's fair enough.
-
The second and third book are even better.

Wow forgot how much I like the Powder Mage books. Half way through Promise of Blood and picking up on so much more. This reminds me how much differently I enjoy a book the second go round. When I'm not busy wondering what will happen next I stop to smell the roses so to speak.

Read the first two books in the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson. If you like Military Sci-fi and humor these are great books. Starting a re-read of The Powder Mage books in preparation for his new book.
-
Oddly I liked TES more than Elantris. For sure finish it your already 1/3 of the way through!

@Mr. Staccato Ah ok this helps! Don't feel bad about being jaded. Brandon has severely spoiled us all or we wouldn't be here right. So by far the thing I liked about the books the most was the characters Hadrian and Royce. Of course I like the "heist" type of books like The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Final Empire so I had a predisposition to like these as well to an extent. I also found the world very interesting. I am scared to say much because I read all three books back to back and cannot remember what was reviled in which at the moment. I think I can safely say I found the different races and their interaction with each other very interesting. There is some mystery and intrigue but I will admit the reveals are no where near Sanderson quality. The fight scenes too but these actually get better in my opinion but again not Brandon's caliber. Brandon has a way of describing fight scenes that play out like a movie in my head. I have not found many authors that do it as well. All in all a good series especially if you like character driven stories.

I really liked the series. Not sure what it was that you didn't completely like about the first book. Maybe if you can elaborate a little I can tell you if your objections get resolved.

[Snapshot Spoilers] Snapshot Reactions Thread
StormingTexan replied to ccstat's topic in Other Stories
So I guess this will be a better movie? I always give Brandon's books the benefit of the doubt but man just could not get in to this one. I thought the overall premise was cool and it is probably just because it was so short but felt like a real missed opportunity to explore the world more. I admit Brandon himself has made me a super critic of world building. Another big problem was I could care less about the characters. When it was revealed Davis was going to kill Chaz I was like fine pull the trigger.. It should be noted I did like Perfect State so it is not that I just didn't like this type of dereliction from his norm I just couldn't get in to this one at all. No biggie though they cant all be home runs. -
Does this sound like a Sanderson Book...

Great glad to help! Btw its a good story. A little different than most of Brandon's work but I enjoyed it. -

Only thing I can think of that remotely starts like this is Sanderson's Perfect State but he moved around on a platform deal. Edit @bstud268 I read the first chapter of Perfect State again and it is very similar to what you are describing. -
If my math is correct it is roughly 450 hours of narration so 27,000 minutes at 15 minutes a day it will only take you 1,800 days to complete the series.

So I finished Blood Mirror and it was good but probably my least favorite so far. Mainly the ending but I guess that is to be expected since this appears to really be a "part 1" of the final book. Now I am eagerly the final (or is it) book! After Lightbringer thought I needed a break from Fantasy so I started Crusade by David Weber. So far really liking it.

Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
StormingTexan replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
So I loved this series! All the way up until Blood Mirror. It is really feeling a bit too meandering to me. -
Not sure either but I have wondered the same thing 100 times. I know its been mentioned Brandon does bring back the assumed dead sparingly of course he has already done it once with a major character in WoR. I'd like to think he is dead dead though of course it is plenty of plot goodness either way.

99% of mine are from this thread.

Yep and don't expect any kind of update. He caught heat for taking longer than he said he would releasing the second book and vowed to not update fans at all. I honestly do not see how he will wrap it up in one more book regardless so have little confidence the next book will be the last.
-
Or Elantrians? My vote is Scadrians too.

Finished The Broken Eye. Really really liking this series. Going to take me a little bit to digest the events at the ending. A little bit of a double edged blade because after The Blood Mirror I will be waiting for the last book just like everyone else. I almost wanted to wait to read The Blood Mirror for a little while but I don't have the WILLpower (see what I did there?) to wait.

Pondering State of Sanderson 2016
StormingTexan replied to The Quiet One's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I completely understand your sentiments Maxal. I am one of the ones that love the fact he has several series going at one time but I know it drives others crazy. Brandon has said numerous times he writes best when he can switch back and forth. Heck it may even take longer to get SA books if he abandoned what he has found to work best for him. I love Brandon's transparency personally. It is one of the things that makes me feel like Brandon really cares about his fans. It is frustrating for me though to never see a Nightblood status bar -
Pondering State of Sanderson 2016
StormingTexan replied to The Quiet One's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Brandon is 41 right now so if you just take the 7 remaining Stormlight books assuming he keeps the pace of a book every 3 years he is 63 before Stormlight is finished (assuming we start the clock when it is actually published he will be closer to 42 then) Now some of the other books will be written in between Stormlight we know this but we would still have 3 each of Dragonsteel and Mistborn Era 4 books after Stromlight. I think at best we can expect one of these books every 2 years which puts completion 2050 and Brandon around 75. I think Pagerunner's estimate is close but pretty optimistic to think he will be able to publish the last 6 books in 6 years. I know that was how Elantris, Mistborn E1, Warbreaker and WoK were produced but Brandon has mentioned this pace was misleading a lot of this was already written just published a year apart. That would be really quick now and this will be when he is a lot more advanced in years not to mention I would think wrapping up your life's work will be a little slower process than the preceding work. So best case I'd think around 2050 (75) worst cast 2055 (80). I do agree there is no reason he cannot keep writing into his 70s and even 80s. I was obviously exaggerating when I said we have to live to 100. It was meant to be tongue and cheek. -
I re-read them all (Edgedancer for the first time of course) and TES is still my favorite of Brandon's short works. I cheated too and read all the essays first. I mean how can you not! I'm a kindle guy both reading and listening to audio books so this was the first hardcover I've bought in years. Had to have a physical copy of the star maps. So finished The Blinding Knife. Just wow. Again kicking my self for passing this series over. I saw it compared a lot to Warbreakers magic (which is my favorite magic system) so I really should have read it sooner. Although I would say besides the use of colors they are not all that similar. A little more elloborate than Warbreaker but not as cool to me at least as awakening. Something morbidly fascinating to me also about the giving up of ones breath. Anyway what the heck I'm going on about Warbreaker now (the Cosmere red headed stepchild). Mr. Weeks is great with twist and keeping up the pace. I've actually noticed it slow down a bit which is allowing for more character development which is pleasant. Almost makes me want to go back and give the Night Angel books another shot. Already starting The Broken Eye.

Correct. I think it pretty much summed up the situation in the fewest amount of words possible. Lot's of good ones here!
