This was a tough choice. Odium and Endowment came close, but I chose Honor (like most everyone else <boring>). There is a very specific reason why I chose Honor. One thing I cannot stand is when people lie to me. I never lie. One thing I hope is said about me when I die is that I was far from perfect, but at least was honest. Lying is one of the filthier sins, in my opinion. Also, I am lousy at, and am wary of, predicting the future. This fits what we know of Honor.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Xaladin replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you are on a team that works to prove theorems in mathematics, and you make the following observations: 1. I am way more chill when it comes to "normal" life than these other nerds. 2. I am way more up-tight than these other nerds when it comes to getting a proof just right. 3. I would make a good Hallandren priest. -
The Friendly Detective (yes, that's the name) will be a Tin Compounder and a Gold Compounder. Nothing will escape the senses of TFD, and TFD is practically invincible. TFD is a detective's best friend.

Stormlight Archive Reread [Updated: 02/27/2015]

No, actually Tvlakv is Shallan's "chauffeur" through the frostlands in Words of Radiance. As far as I know, he is still alive. -
The Shard of Underestimation. This Shard actually wouldn't be bad; actually, I think it would be pretty cool. So this is how it works: When you underestimate your opponent, you get access to the Shard's power. This triggers a chain reaction, since this now means that your opponent has underestimated you. So every fight is the kind where you keep one-upping each other. That would result in epic fights (the cliche kind, except there would be a legitimate explanation for it beyond plot device).

Rust and Ruin, how did you read my mind ... or did you instead plant that in my mind? Did you use Allomancy on me? My team found imbedding spiderwebs in glass to be too inefficient. Furthermore, the new Plastic technology is too weak, but it is better than just glass. Glass armor is a very bad idea because when your enemy breaks it, guess where the shards (pun intended) go... So we ran into this mistwraith and thought we would capture it for some experiments. The mistwraith didn't do anything with the glass we fed it, but it did do some interesting stuff to the Plastic. Imagine a material as hard as bone, but much less brittle. We have yet to make actual armor with this new Mistwraith-aided technology, but it may just turn out even better than the MondoLeather. We might even combine the two, though that could get awfully bulky... I will have to think about the wolfhound a little more. So these are pretty much like TenSoon with the Blessing of Potency, except even bigger and also with abilities in the Metalic Arts? Dogs already have good senses. What would Tin do? What if my Friend was a Tin Savant? Exactly how intelligent are these wolfhounds? Would they know how to use their allomancy and feruchemy efficiently, or would I have to train my Friend to burn Tin when I give a particular command (no pun intended here)? Because if they are smart enough to use these powers entirely on their own, they are more or less people (like TenSoon). I'll give it some more thought. Some more info would be nice too.

The technology hasn't developed very far yet, but I thought I'd try this vibrating lie detector. If you see me wearing my Hat improperly, it is because I want enemies to think I am vulnerable. Remember what Marsh taught Vin in the Final Empire. If you are always blocking every attack, you may never know what the attack even is, and that is dangerous. When my Hat is not on properly, it is so that if an enemy tries to use emotional allomancy on me, the lie detector (which is temperature sensitive: this is as far as the tech has gotten, but my team is doing some research ... ) should alert me so that I know and enemy is trying the manipulate me. Also, I have this suit of armor. I call it the MondoLeather Jacket. Not only if this stuff tough leather, but the geometry of how the leather is pieced together is to maximize difficulty of penetration. If an enemy tries to stab you when you wear this armor, the weapon may get past the first layer, and then slide along sideways over another layer of leather (it won't actually penetrate and hurt you). There is no metal in this armor. My team is researching how to make the suit even stronger by use of spiderwebs. We need metal detectors around the entrance to our hideout. I haven't made these yet, but I have some magnets. I will need to coat the magnets in aluminum in order to hide the metal detectors. The weakness of using magnets is that they won't detect aluminum, which could be used against us ... (more research necessary here) Any ideas for some anti-TinSavant equipment? Perhaps something to vibrate walls so the Savant gets false data?

I brought my Anti-Tineye-Spy-Strobelights. Also a few copper bells to hide in convenient locations (windowpanes, etc), for alerting purposes, primarily against Lurchers and Coinshots. I also have this "foxtail" obsidian blade, which is hard to dislodge after entering a Bloodmaker/Thug body. The handle also has a trigger that releases the outer blade (there are five nested blades) after its job is done. If these work, I will see if I can make more... Can I have a Hat?

Stormlight Archive Reread [Updated: 02/27/2015]
Xaladin replied to Frosted Flakes's topic in Stormlight Archive
What if the Chasmfiends metamorphose into Santhids? We know Santhids are incredibly rare; perhaps it's because they are endangered by the hunting of the juveniles of their kind? ALSO, Shallan sees the same kind of Spren around the Chasmfiend as around the Santhid! -

This is why I am a happy person. It takes weeks for me to read one book the size of Words of Radiance. Of course, I psycho-analyze everything. This usually reduces the enjoyment of a fictional book, but Sanderson writes books that do not lose enjoyment with analysis. -
Risk to Syl in next book [Warbreaker Spoilers]
Xaladin replied to Saskshard's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, bear in mind that Nalan gave up (well temporarily anyway) when Lift was pardoned. not quite the same thing, but related. That said, one could argue (if one were a skybreaker) that no matter the law now, if something was illegal at the time it happened, then it deserves punishment, so even changing laws would only be protection if they were changed prior to the action About the quote feature: I couldn't use the quote button until I started using Firefox instead of IE for 17th shard. Anyway, this quote just made me remember: Nalan is insanely Awesomely powerful and totally not someone to cross, and he just got TOLD by a random 16 year old kid. The first time reading the interlude was way intense, but the reread of the ending was just hilarious.- 20 replies

the most useless uses for useful powers

Use Awakening to "grayscale" the family photos. Be sure to give a garbled Command to whatever you are Awakening (we wouldn't want any side effects, now would we?) -
Shard of Forgetfulness: Anyone can Invest, but they forget why they wanted to when they do, so the only people who Invest end up doing some random stuff with their powers. Shard of Randomness: This as an Intent is actually a paradox if you think about it.

What about Frost? Isn't he the one Hoid wrote the letter to (and he wrote Hoid back in WOR)? Didn't Brandon say he is the oldest person we have seen in the Cosmere so far? (I may add sources later as I find them)

The Shard of Unattractiveness. The Uglier you are, the more you can Invest. Oh, and Investiture makes you glow. I don't know what that will do to the attractiveness of someone Ugly.

The obvious reason for posting "bad idea" theories is to promote "good ideas." Maybe this crazy theory will trigger someone smart to make a better guess. We already know the Listeners can change their forms. Aimians are another "non-human" race on Roshar. We know Aimians can change their appearance (Axies' tattoos) at will and have other weird properties (shadow facing wrong way, etc.). Larkins come from Aimia. What was one doing way up in the Reshi Isles? And we know Axies was captive there. Perhaps there are more clues which stem from Vstim knowing when it was the right time to make a trade with the Reshi, and Rysn got something even better. Perhaps the original trade agreement would have involved taking Axies in his humanoid form as a slave, and getting him in Larkin form was an unexpected surprise?

Here's one from Shallan, but the quote may be a little off: I am glad to be in this chasm because I always wondered what it would be like for a chunk of meat to pass through an intestine.

Was this thread necro'd because of the following WOB from a couple of weeks ago? Fan: can you tell me anything about Kaladin's maternal grandparents? BWS: Let's just say that his mother (you're asking a very astute question) gave up more than most people gave up in that city to go be what she became. She's definitely fallen in social standing since her childhood. She took a hit. <copied verbatim from Wetlander's post on tor dot com Words of Radiance reread, chapter 23, post 122. The link feature really messes with my computer, sorry>

There are likely a lot of unknowns here. For one, I am 99% sure the person who got me to read them doesn't know that I read them. I actually tell people not to read works by Brandon Sanderson. My argument is something like the following: 1. If you read tWOK, you Will (not "should" or "will want to", but Will) read WOR. 2. tWOK and WOR are both over 1000 pages. 3. If you have life or are busy, you can't afford to read anything by Brandon Sanderson, as you will lose your life as you know it. However, this (reverse-psychological) argument actually makes people more likely, not less likely to start reading. After all, if it's addictive, I want in, right?
