  1. Welcome to the 17th Shard! I agree that if you liked the general tone of Rithmatist, the Reckoners series (Steelheart and Firefight) is also YA-themed and might appeal to you. If you really liked trying to figure out the magic of the Rithmatic world, though... all the defenses and chalkings and whatnot... then I'd recommend Elantris next, because the magic systems in that book are also writing-based and subject to elaborations, interpretations, etc. My overall recommended order, if you really want to dive into Sanderson's "Cosmere" world, is: - Elantris - Warbreaker - Mistborn series (4 books) - Stormlight Archive (Way of Kings and Words of Radiance) - All the other Cosmere novellas and short stories Finally, I really like a little sci-fi short story that doesn't get much play, probably because because it's free and is a standalone story not connected to anything else Sanderson has written: Defending Elysium. It's available for free on Brandon's website.
  2. D'wag was astonished that all the villagers seemed to be quite open about not only wandering around on the surface of Scadrial, but actually visiting other worlds, as well! Were they not hiding here like his family? He turned to Axies and Cleo. "Wait, so the two of you have actually left the Twinborn caves? How did you survive? I tried secretly spending the night above ground one time, but in the morning, I was waking up to ash and dust. I wiped my brow and I sweat my... Rust! It felt like I was breathing in some chemicals!" D'wag inhaled sharply, as if by reflex at his recall of the experience, then let out a long "Aaaaahhhhhhh." (Yes, I've been waiting to use that in a game set in the Mistborn world. Those lyrics always make me think of Scadrial. ) EDIT: minor grammar
  3. D'wag knew he had to join the campaign against the spiked twinborn. D'wag's family had always kept pretty much to themselves in Twinborn Village, preferring that no one learn the ancient, dangerous (or so his parents claimed) secret hidden in their bloodlines. The peril represented by agents of Ruin infiltrating his family, though, was far greater than that of the tiny hidden village learning of his genealogy. So, ignoring the gasps and excited whispers of the crowd as he stepped out of the shadows, he said loudly, "I volunteer!" I really don't get the point of trying to keep our secret, anyway, D'wag thought. I mean, the unusual names in our family make it obvious that something is different about us. So my family was exiled from the southern continent of Scadrial many generations ago. That's not some dark, dirty, shameful thing. After all, if there's one thing this life has taught me, it's that there's always another secret...
  4. Shoot, the entire Song of Ice and Fire would have been done a decade ago. We'd be onto the Song of Pools of Water and Smoldering Ash by now.

  9. Going by the rules of the game, the "no, they were only mostly dead" person would have to be Gamma, Luckat, or Smart Guy (the people who died in the last cycle).
  10. I wouldn't eat that cookie...
  11. I agree, Sirce. Specifically, I thought that... ... was masterfully handled by Brandon. If I wanted lots of graphic sex, violence, and swearing, I'd read the Song of Ice and Fire series. (Which I have read, so maybe I should say "the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series." Oh, wait... )
