not sure. definitely not first. i'd probably wait and read it last, not for spoiler related reasons - once you're a few books in, i don't think it holds much in the way of spoilers - more just to avoid breaking up the story flow by jumping backwards for an extended flashback right in the middle.

its useful, but the post I was replying to was specifically about pairing it with Duralumin to enhance it somehow, and I'm not certain its clear how that would work or if it would actually help at all. basically the transportation surge is useful on its own, for worldhoppers at least, but it isnt clear that pairing it with mistborn actually helps any.
-
you assume. barring something in the RoW preview chapters, which I wouldnt know about because i've been avoiding them, the only thing we actually seen that the surge of transportation can do is hop between cognitive and physical realms. presumably it can do more, but I'm not aware of any details.

Compounding with AonDor instead of Allomancy
Dunkum replied to Benkinsky's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Depending how it worked, that copper one could potentially be very useful, I suppose. If filtering it through a coppermind allows you to extract a memory without degarding the original in the coppermind itself, for instance. It depends of course, but my impression of AonDor is that an Aon written or formed from physical material is not expended when activated so pulling the investiture through a coppermind with specific memories stored in it could in theory do what is needed. -
Compounding with AonDor instead of Allomancy
Dunkum replied to Benkinsky's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It might work, either as you describe, or with some tweaking. if any system could make it work it would be AonDor, but I think you are overthinking this. part of the reason compounding is so useful is that it allows allomancy's power source to fuel ferruchemy in a way that is end positive instead of end neutral. But most of the reason this is useful is because Allomancy is limited in the scope of what it can do, and standard ferruchemy is limited in the power available to it, so mixing the two lets you overcome, to some extent, both of those issues, especially the latter. AonDor doesn't actually have these issues. If you wanted to use AonDor to produce a ton of health for instance, then you just need to know the right Aons, and the right sizes and such. you don't need to funnel the AonDor's power through a metalmind, it can already do what you want on its own. that's not to say there arent benefits to mixing Ferruchemy with AonDar, the connection thing you mention for instance, but it seems like in most cases it would probably be easier to just use the Aons to grant yourself whatever trait, and then store that power into the metalminds for later use unconstrained by location/connection. e.g. use Aon whatever to generate a bunch of spiritual connection to Arelon, store that into the duraluminmind for later use. no need to shape it or try to hack ferruchemy to use AonDor's power source directly. Maybe you'd have to use your method to fill the nicrosilmind that would allow you to tap duralumin in the first place, but even that might be possible to accomplish with just Aons if you were clever enough - though in that one case it might be easier to hack an existing metalmind than to try to cobble together the power from scratch. -
thats also not a particularly effective use of the surge, honestly. why make yourself weigh a ton when you can use a shardblade to cut a giant boulder and make that weight a ton. if you are worried about trajectory, you could ride it up to the last minute to make adjustments. plus chucking boulders at people has got to be less dangerous than smashing yourself into them.
-
I don't really see a whole lot of benefit here, it is probably easier to just lash yourself more or less than to mess about with filling/tapping an ironmind while in midair. at best it seems liek it'd be useful if you run out of stormlight and need to survive a fall of some distance.
-
If you were able to cobble together enough power to push through the massive amount of investiture, I'd guess probably. but its going to be functionally impossible I think

on my library's wait list for Battle Ground. got in earlier for that than I did for Peace Talks earlier this year, but i'm still expecting to wait for over a month unless the library increases the number of copies. for some reason, the people with holds seem to take close to their full 2 weeks on these books, even though they can reasonably finished in a day or two.
-
it was fine. I enjoyed it enough when I read it, but wasn't particularly interested in rereading it.
-
yea, possibly that could work, if it didnt just halt things entirely. i'm not sure of the precise mechanics of what would happen if you tried it. would probably help to stop a runaway train or something.

I wonder if an elantiran ferruchemist could store the effects of specific aons into nicrosilminds to be pulled out at will? it might not work that way, but it seems vaguely plausible. if so it would allow you to take the time to construct aons ahead of time, in Elantris for full effect, then unleash them later. it probably wouldn't work that way though. Elantrians have the most versatile set of abilities, so long as they are near elantris, but there are ways to get past that restriction, but it isn't clear how well they combine wiht other abilities. Surgebinders, especially 5th oath surgebinders, are pretty much the top for raw power after compounders, but they need a readily available investiture source, like stormlight (i wonder if they'd be able to absorb it from sunlight on Taldain or from the mists on Scadrial?). Allomancers and ferruchemists just need access to metal to use their abilities, but the abilities themselves are pretty constrained. I think allomancer (duralumin misting if I have to be that specific) will tend to pair well with suregbinding, provided they are careful. duralumin boosted lashings would be a good way to kill yourself once youve burned through all your stormlight and don't have the benefit of its healing anymore. on the other hand, duralumin boosted regrowth would probably outdo gold compounding in terms of raw burst of healing power. it even presents opportunities when paired with some unusual ones, like illumination (duralumin boost + noise could likley produce sounds loud enough to deafen or even outright kill, though the surgebinder themself might be caught up in it.), though I havent found a good use of it with abrasion yet.

right. I realized after I posted that that you might not know that where you are right now. or it might not have been confirmed or whatever. I think it has, or at least been hinted at strongly enough to be practically a confirmation

Be'lal was the one who was set up there as High Lord Samon (had to look that up to get the name), Moiraine kills him with Balefire. Ishamael shows up to fight Rand and Rand defeats him with Callandor.

Belal and Ishamael.

Was it whitecloaks who told us he was dead? because I remember them being extremely unreliable about that. they tended to assume their enemies were much worse than they actually are. I think it was clear he was injured, btu not necessarily obvious he was dead, but Egwene and Perrin were in no condition to think about it at the time
-
fair enough. I don't recall ever particularly thinking he was dead. been a long while since my first read, but pretty sure I always sort of assumed he escaped from whenever it was we last saw him, the whitecloak attack in book 1 I think it was.

he shows up again eventually, but not til like book 7 or so i think. technically i suppoe thats a spoiler

The Legend of Korra Is Now Also On Netflix! (Avatar's Sequel)
Dunkum replied to Scout_Fox's topic in Entertainment Discussion
This is about where I stood on it back when it was originally airing. Season 3 is absolutely worth it. Season 4 is pretty good too, but has its own share of flaws. -
I'm just gonna second all of this. he was right about how bad season 2 is, though. and the fight in the season 2 climax is utter garbage. for that matter season 4 has a lot of bad fights too: That said, if you tried to compile a top 10 list of best fights across both Avatar series, I have to think that like 7 of them would be from Korra, mostly season 3. the one you reference in the spoiler box there is probably #1, for my money

Feruchemists & Allomacers using Shardplate?
Dunkum replied to Ironwill2112's topic in Cosmere Discussion
thats where I land on this too. burning metals will work fine, and the ones that affect the user specifically will work more or less as expected, but anything that has to corss the barrier that is the plate is going to break down. special case: for steelsight/ironsight, do you think those still work as normal? I'm inclined to say they would, though teh actual push/pull would not- 14 replies

Feruchemists & Allomacers using Shardplate?
Dunkum replied to Ironwill2112's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Hard to say. Shardplate, even the dead kind, is massively invested, and investiture tends to interfere with investiture, but the investiture is being directed outward in this case. teh way I see it we have 3 basic situations: 1. ferruchemy where the investiture is going to be entirely contained within the plate - i.e. both ferruchemist and metalmind are inside the plate, and the investiture being used is stored physically in the metalmind. I think this would work OK - we know the Knights Radiant can use at least some of their abilities while wearing live plate, which is likely more invested than the dead plate, but also probably more responsive to the user's will, but ultimately i don't think it will interfere too much here. for your pewter example, i doubt the plate would pop, but it would probably get very uncomfortable very fast if they got too big 2. internal allomancy - when burning an internal metal (or compounding by burning a metalmind) the allomancer affects themself with their investiture, and it seems unlikley that the plate would interfere with that since it doesnt need to cross the plate. pewter or tin enhancing physical abilities is an example of this. however, the source of that investiture is the spiritual realm, it isn't stored in the physical like a metalmind, so its plausible that the plate's investiture could interfere with the process of accessing the investiture in the first place. I doubt that it would be a problem personally, so I expect that internal metals would still generally work, but there is potentially a case to be made that they would fail. special case for Bronze: the investiture of the plate around you may be strong enough to wash out the pulses from external sources, like trying to hear a pin drop from the front row of a concert, on the other hand, I don't think the plate's investiture is kinetic, and Eshonai seems to be able to hear the rhythms while wearing plate, which we know is related, so maybe it wouldn't. 3. external allomancy - metals like steel or zinc that affect someone/thing outside of the allomancer. This is the case that I think will have a problem. using these metals would require pushing investiture past the shardplate's own investiture envelope, and I think that would cause a substantial amount of interference, probably enough to render external metals just about useless- 14 replies

for me I usually focus on one thing to the exclusion of all others until I burn out on it for a while. so i'll do a bunch of reading for a few months until I don't feel ike that anymore, then i'll start binge watching some TV show or playign a video game until I tire of that etc.

Honor's shard was splintered. basically broken into a bunhc of tiny pieces so that it would be nearly impossible to reform it into a whole. Strictly speaking "Honor" is the shard, and the guy holding it, Tanavast, is dead. Odium doesn't want to pick up any other shards because if he did, they would influence his personality, and he doesn't want that. instead he splinters them so that they are no longer a threat to him. edit to add: note that in mistborn, Ati and Leras, the shardholders for Ruin and Preservation respectively, both died, but the shards themselves remained intact, which is why Sazed was able to pick them up. What Odium has done to splinter Honor is an additional level of effort above and beyond just killing the shardholder.

Steel is plausibly the most useful in a fight, that or Gold, but lets be honest, how often do you get into fights? most useful in a fight does me just about no good. If we are assuming compounding then Gold is still a strong contender, even with the cost of Gold, i guarantee burning a couple goldminds is cheaper than health insurance and doctors, not to mention much faster than actual available treatments. Someone upthread mentioned Bronze, and not having to sleep would have some benefits. for one thing you essentially add several hours to every day; speaking personally i hate doing housework after regular work because it feels like a waste of my leisure hours - an issue that would all but vanish if i suddenly had 8 more leisure hours per day. just that extra time on its own probably puts this at 2nd place for me. the rest are mostly only more useful in very specific scenarios. you'll note that I didn't even mention the allomantic powers of these metals and thats because most of them are substantially less useful than their ferruchemic counterpart. bendalloy and the emotional metals might have some value day to day, pewter and tin too, but their ferruchemy is clsoe enough to their allomancy that its irrelevant
