  1. Elantris suffers because there is not a whole lot out there for it. The other Cosmere novel similar to it, Warbreaker, has waaaay more connections in other Cosmere novels. The biggest connection Elantris has in another Cosmere piece is in Mistborn: Secret History and a small note in Way of the Kings. So right now, the biggest draw Elantris has is its mystery. We can identify the mysteries and try to get as many clues as we can from what little we have, but that's about it. Brandon seems determined to put off future installments to it until at least 2021, so until then we really won't have anything else.
  2. Just going to leave some reading riiiiiight.... here!
  3. @Stormrunner1730 Odium does have to remain a credible threat. I think he does not want to leave until Cultivation is dead and shattered. Since the first cycle seems to be focused on the rebuilding of the Knights Radiant, I do not think we will get a Cultivation shattering or even a true Desolation until the second cycle. This will give our current protagonists time to thwart Odium slightly, but only by postponing the final war for a couple of decades.
  4. I am going for something more sinister in my current form! It's a reference to the first book in R Scott Bakker's Second Apocalypse series that I'm reading right now. Once I am done with the books released so far, I'll change to something else!
  5. Silverlight would definitely go into new, exciting directions! Though I have to admit, another Threnody story sounds pretty good as well!
  6. He likes Jack Vance?! What a monster!
  7. A lot depends on how integral Odium is to the Cosmere at large. If it turns out he is the Big Bad, I can see him escaping during the first 5 book arc. Another possibility is that it could turn out that the Big Bad comes along in the second 5 book arc. If this were to be the case, then we could have a defeated Odium at the end of book 5, since a better, stronger villain would be present for the later books. As far as reforming the Shard of Honor? I honestly can not say. I would like for that to occur after another greater threat is introduced. Right now, shattering Shards is the coolest thing a villain in the Cosmere can do. Being able to reverse that threatens to take away that wow factor.
  8. I am reviving this thread to encourage me in my studies! Personal studies, ones where I don't get grades, I'm doing it for fun! I'll start out with some notations on the concept of "truth". An important thing to consider when you are trying to define truth is to determine what can be true (or what can have a truth value). This gives rise to some interesting results. Consider: let's say that only statements can have a truth value. We can then posit that a statement is true in so far as it agrees with facts. "The cat is on the mat" can be verified by looking at the fact of whether the cat is indeed on the map. The interesting thing in this case is that the statement "The cat is on the mat" can be true, but the fact of the cat being on the mat has no truth value (it's neither true or false) because it is the measurement by which we would determine if a statement is true! In other words, by my example, a statement can be true in so far as it agrees with facts. Facts can not be true or false, they are simply facts.
  9. I think it's interesting that some authors are known for one and only one book. Case in point: William Golding, Lord of the Flies. Thanks to our work, people on this forum can name a few of his other books, but out in the wilds of the real world, I imagine people would have little to no idea of any other book he wrote. As to what you are talking about: William Shakespeare with Romeo and Juliet. What's better? Just about everything not Romeo and Juliet.
  10. I feel Brandon would find that to be a little disrespectful to Robert Jordan's memory. Brandon does not mind squeezing all the monies out of his own properties, but he does seem to not apply that same zeal to non-original properties.
  11. The biggest issue I foresee is that movie production will overtake book production. Particularly with Stormlight. It's become apparent that Brandon can not write those fast enough, he actually has what would be considered a more normal writing pace with respect to Stormlight. Theoretically, they can adapt the first 5 Stormlight and then do the Mistborn movies, and that might be enough time to not make a movie on stuff to come. As far as making Stormlight first, that makes some sense. You want to appeal with a blockbuster storyline: so that's either Mistborn or Stormlight. Starting with Mistborn has one issue: it has a "Dark Lord". That means people who don't know better will start making comparisons to Lord of the Rings, which makes convincing people to give it a chance a bit more difficult. Stormlight has a more "original" vibe that can draw people in. Once they are brought onboard, a Mistborn movie will have a much better chance.
  12. This is correct. Jordan pitched the idea as a trilogy. His agent knew he tended to overwrite, so changed it to a more realistic seven or six book series. A Song of Ice and Fire was also originally envisioned as a trilogy
  13. Annnnd I've got another notch on my Cynicism Belt.

    1. Kaymyth

      Kaymyth

There must be more notches than belt by now.

I am very shocked that another notch could be made!

    3. Darkness Ascendant

      Darkness Ascendant

Y'know I can think of so many puns with the word "notch" but none of them apply here :/

  14. To be honest, it never occurred to me to call you "Rosie"! My uncle-aspect does wish to say something groan worthy like, "Hey, Rosemary! Where's Parsley, Sage and Thyme?" *You'll be happy to know my cat bit me for writing that*
  15. Yes. I mean, we don't stop buying books in a series and this is what we are dealing with: a Cosmere story serialized as comics. Though the real reason I will buy it is because if we can get some of the more minor stories of the Cosmere in comics form, that will free up time for Brandon to write the big stuff instead of working on getting prose versions out there. As a result, I want this to succeed. As a first outing in comics, it's not that bad, and with more experience subsequent stories should be structured better. I do wish that Dynamite was not doing it. They kinda suck with being timely. But, if we show there is demand, they are more likely to give it priority and, hopefully, will get subsequent volumes faster and with better editing. Or future Cosmere stories could be picked up by a better company, like Image. In either event, to get these results require sales!
  16. @Darkness Ascendant was right, it was long past due for a change in my Shard Identity!
  17. I view it like Moorcock's Elric series. Sure, you should be aware of it, but it isn't required reading.
  18. 1) Pincher Martin 2) Lord of the Flies 3) The Inheritors I have not read The Paper Man yet. To be sure, Pincher Martin and The Inheritors are waaay more difficult reads than Lord of the Flies, but they are worth it! Pincher Martin in particular left me breathless at the end.
  19. My collection of William Golding novels is almost complete! I am only missing the Double Tongue, which was published posthumously... so by some definitions, my collection is complete!
  20. Heh... we have a Lancaster in Ohio. Here, it's pronounced Lane-kiss-ter.
  21. @Ammanas I have wanted to read some Jack London for some time. Thanks for the suggestion!
  22. I have not gotten to The Spire yet, though I've heard plenty good about it. My favorite so far has been Pincher Martin. It's a nice little, dense cruel book... but that pretty much describes every William Golding novel! As far as the adaptation goes: it depends on how much they change and how good they are with actually writing. If the only thing that changes is that it is all girls instead of all boys, it will fail. If they can't convincingly write girl characters, it will fail miserably. Another way to look at it is to consider the Lion King. It's pretty much an adaptation of Hamlet, but with an African setting and African animals. But they also didn't blindly follow Hamlet, they just used it as a framework. Something similar needs to be done in order for the Lord of the Flies adaptation to succeed.
  23. My pet peeve today is that nobody is asking me what I think about the Lord of the Flies adaptation news! I mean, I'm the only person anybody knows that has read more than that one book by William Golding! Come on!
  24. @The Sovereign For creating Discount Adam Warlock
  25. You can't find the "original" version anymore, but Stephen King's The Stand.
